MISSION STATEMENT Columbia Art Center is dedicated to providing artistic

experiences in the visual arts for all ages and interest levels and to connect with local arts organizations and community businesses in creating diverse offerings.

OVERVIEW Columbia Art Center offers year-round art classes, rotating gallery exhibitions, a gallery gift shop, summer art camp for children, art parties, studio

rentals, a Japanese Garden, art and life enhancement lectures and more! Columbia

Art Center is part of Columbia Association’s Community Services Division and has

been part of Columbia Association for 29 years. It has been a functioning arts school for more than 30 years and was formerly known as the Antioch Visual Arts College.

LOCATION Columbia Art Center is located in the Long Reach Village Center (next to Stonehouse Community Center) just minutes from Route 175 and Tamar Drive.

DIRECTIONS From Route 29, take 175 East towards Jessup. Follow 175 for several miles to the light at Tamar Drive. Turn left on Tamar and go one mile. Turn right on Cloudleap Court. Turn left into Long Reach Village Center parking lot. The Art Center is located in the courtyard (look for the large round window and fish sculpture). From I-95, take the MD-100 West exit (43B) towards Ellicott City. Take the Snowden River Exit (3). Enter the roundabout and take the second exit onto Snowden River Parkway. Turn right on Tamar Drive and drive .5 miles. Turn left at Cloudleap Court. Park in the Long Reach Village Center lot on the left. ManneqART: Sculpture on the Human Form Features three-dimensional artworks presented on life-size mannequins created by artists and reflecting the theme of Nature, Literature, Art and Architecture. Geraldine Butler: ColorScapes/Webs/Storms A solo exhibition featuring abstract works from the last three years. Inspired by elements in nature, Butler explores color as ColorScapes, ColorWebs and ColorStorms. Window Gallery

Julie Gross: Urban Landscapes Julie finds inspiration in the urban landscapes around her. Her work exaggerates color, mood, and perspective while simplifying distracting detail to bring out the true essence of the city. Reception for both shows: Sunday, November 15, 2-4pm

Erase Hate Through Art An examination of the phenomenon of bullying and hate crimes through the eyes of artists as a means of prevention. The show features the artworks of 28 artists and is sponsored by Erase Hate Through Art. Curated by Grant Meyers and Ed Higgins. Enjoy an evening of live music, delicious light fare, raffles, pottery wheel demonstrations and much more! Select a handcrafted, one-of-a-kind ceramic bowl to take home with you. Ticket and event proceeds will go to benefit Grassroots Crisis Intervention Center of Howard County. The evening event will be emceed by NPR radio announcer Terry Owens. All bowls showcased were made collectively by Columbia Art Center’s dedicated students, faculty and staff throughout the year during volunteer work sessions. TOURS Off the Beaten Path Gallery Tour Join tour facilitator Roberta Greenstein in touring local galleries and artists’ studios in the Baltimore, MD and Washington, DC areas, plus lunch at a local eatery — all in the comfort of door-to-door van service. Wulah Cooper’s Story: From War Zones to Refugee Camp to Columbia, MD Columbia resident, Wulah Cooper, will present his gripping story of how he came to immigrate to America in 2000 as an international student at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. He survived one of Africa’s most brutal civil wars — the Liberian Civil War — which lasted 14 years and took the lives of more than 250,000 Liberians. ➤ Monday,

RENTALS Columbia Art Center rentals are available in our art galleries, studio rooms and Japanese garden. Enjoy a unique setting filled with original art for your next event. Art displays change regularly. Our rooms accommodate bridal and baby showers, corporate meetings, art and craft group meetings, lectures, art project rentals, birthday parties and celebrations of all sorts, even small weddings. Columbia Art Center provides tables and chairs. Room setup and take down are responsibility of renter. Please allow set-up and take-down time in your rental timeframe. For an additional fee, Columbia Art Center can set up room. Catering is not provided by Columbia Art Center. OFFICE ART RESCUE

Columbia Art Center is the ideal venue for offices to hold fun team-building painting activities. These art workshops can be held at Columbia Art Center seven days a week based on availability. Columbia Art Center provides the canvas, easel, brushes, paints and smocks/aprons for your entire team. Catering is welcome or you can bring your own refreshments.

Types of Team Building Painting Activities Offered: Individual Paintings — Everyone in the class paints and personalizes their own painting with the help of the instructor’s step-by-step instructions. One-Step, Two-Step Painting — Paint one step, then move to a different seat to continue on to the next step. Collaborative Painting — Everyone in the group contributes to a large, three foot by four foot painting. One collaborative painting recommended for every 10 painters at the event. These are great to hang on the office wall after the event for use as a conversation piece. Mystery Masterpiece — Our instructor takes you through a painting step by step. The catch is no one knows what the finished painting looks like.

School’s Out Youth Visiting Artist Series for grades 5-8 Columbia Art Center is pleased to invite students ages 11-13 to participate in its Visiting Artist Series. The series is designed to encourage young artists to improve their technical skills while acquiring a sense of personal expression. The program provides an opportunity for students to connect with community artists and to cultivate a passion for the arts. Guest instructors will discuss their personal art and creative process while teaching a unique and challenging workshop. NOTE: Sessions can also be redeemed as part of School’s Out series sale. MOMMY AND ME ART PLAY For adult and child ages 2-5 with Laura Easter In class, toddlers will explore a variety of colors, shapes and textures using various age-appropriate tools and art supplies. Each class explores a new theme and experience for the child. Learn to mix colors, make new colors with various paint combinations and have fun creating art projects with textures using sand, cloth, ribbon, leaves, pine cones and more! Each class will include a short story time to give children the opportunity to learn how their masterpieces connect to the real world. Program is offered on the following Sundays, 1-2:30pm. CLASSES

Unless otherwise noted, supplies are included in the cost of tuition for youth classes. Because Columbia Art Center wants students to focus on the activity and not worry about getting messy, it is recommended that they wear old clothes or bring a smock for all activities.

YOUTH ARTISTIC MASTER CERTIFICATE PROGRAM For ages 6-17 NEW! Columbia Art Center’s Youth Artistic Masters Certificate Program offers students the chance to focus their studies as they hone their artistic abilities. Whether used as a means for creative self-expression or to prepare for further artistic endeavors, these classes and workshops will work to expand participants’ skill levels and stretch their creativity while building confidence and artistic sensibility. Who Should Take This Program: Students between the ages of six and 17 who take classes or workshops at Columbia Art Center during the Fall 2015 class session, Winter 2016 class session or Spring 2016 class session. Program Description: Students are asked to complete four classes which will enable them to receive a Level 1 Certificate that includes a free portfolio review and 25% discount on a future class or workshop. Participants who complete 8 classes will receive a Level 2 Certificate that includes a free portfolio review and 50% discount on a future class or workshop. Participants who complete 12 classes will receive a Level 3 Certificate which includes a free portfolio review and free class. Register for free for the Youth Artistic Master Certificate Program when you sign up and pay for your first class — classes taken during the Fall 2015, Winter 2016, and Spring 2016 sessions can apply to the Certificate Program.


ART THROUGH THE CURRICULUM FOR HOMESCHOOLERS For ages 5-8 with Emily Yeagley Designed for individuals and groups! Learn about general subjects through a visual lens and hands-on exploration. This art integration class will allow students to develop artistic skills and techniques while learning age-appropriate basics in subjects such as language, mathematics, history, science and health. An in-depth exploration of the individual subjects will be further explored in the following sessions. Provide your child with a new way of entering a subject while they have fun creating art. GUEST ARTIST WORKSHOP WATERCOLOR PAINTING VS. OIL PAINTING: CONCEPTS, DEMOS AND HANDS-ON

Steve Fleming You will love this unique workshop designed for watercolor artists and oil painters alike with some experience in either media. The same subject will be demonstrated in both mediums giving the negatives and positives of each medium. Steve will discuss composition, concept and focus of the painting as they apply to both mediums. Working from a photograph, Steve will do a quick demonstration in each medium in the morning on both Saturday and Sunday. PEN AND INK DRAWING with Carol Zika Beginners will be introduced to the use of pen strokes such as hatching, cross-hatching, stippling, contour lines and scumbling to create value and texture in ink drawings. This time-honored medium can be applied to finely detailed work, as well as to loose sketching. Continuing students will work from their own photographs or field sketches and can begin to combine ink drawings with watercolor. EXPERIMENTAL WATERCOLOR ON YUPO with Yolanda Koh Learn how to create a watercolor painting on Yupo®, a synthetic paper that gives unique, amazing results. Using negative shapes, monotypes and techniques for wiping off colors, create interesting images and textures on Yupo®. Various materials will be used to create unique textures, including mesh, bubble wrap, plastic wrap and a needlepoint panel. Bring your watercolors, brushes and imprint materials. Yupo® paper will be available to purchase from the instructor at the workshop at $2 per sheet. Beverages and desserts will be provided with a one-hour lunch break from 12-1pm. FIBER INTRODUCTION TO KNITTING OR CROCHET with Anna Tai For beginners and beyond! You have the choice of learning either knitting or crochet to learn in this fun basics workshop. In knitting, you will learn how to cast on, master the knit and purl stitches and how to cast off. In crochet, you will learn the chain stitch (for foundation chain), single crochet and double crochet stitches. A supplies list will be given to you at the time of your registration. DRAWING & PAINTING SAMPLING WORKSHOPS BASICS ZENTANGLE with Deanna Williford, CZT Explore this popular art form of drawing which is an easy-to-learn and relaxing method of drawing structured patterns. Anyone who thinks he or she is a non-artist can learn! Calligraphers, mixed media artists and journal enthusiasts enjoy adding some zing to your creations with Zentangle patterns as embellishments. This approach to drawing will help you to increase your focus and creativity. Children seven years or older are welcome to enroll if accompanied by an enrolled adult. A $5 supplies fee (for a mini Zentangle kit) will be collected at the beginning of the class by the teacher. This same kit may be used for any additional Zentangle workshops. Columbia Art Center rentals are available in our art galleries, studio rooms and Japanese garden. Enjoy a unique setting filled with original art for your next event. Art displays change regularly. Our rooms accommodate bridal and baby showers, corporate meetings, art and craft group meetings, lectures, art project rentals, birthday parties and celebrations of all sorts, even small weddings. Columbia Art Center provides tables and chairs. Room setup and take down are responsibility of renter. Please allow setup and take-down time in your rental timeframe. For an additional fee, Columbia Art Center can set up room. Catering is not provided by Columbia Art Center. Class Policies & Procedures INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY If Howard County public schools are closed due to inclement weather, the Columbia Art Center will not hold daytime adult classes or any youth classes. For information regarding adult afternoon and evening classes and all weekend classes, please call the Columbia Art Center at 410-730-0075.

DISCOUNTS Individuals who live or work full-time on Columbia Association assessed property pay the discounted “Resident “ tuition for classes. All others must pay the “Non-Resident “ tuition. Access to CA facilities and programs may be denied to a Columbia Resident (member or non-member) whose property is the subject of a covenant violation referred to the Architectural Resource Committee for Action.

SUPPLIES Adult students are responsible for purchasing their own materials for most classes. Refer to course description for clarification or call Columbia Art Center for additional information. A supply list for adult classes will be supplied upon registration.

CANCELLATION AND TUITION REFUNDS Columbia Art Center reserves the right to cancel any class for any reason. In the event the Art Center must cancel a class, refund of tuition is guaranteed. Tuition cannot be credited, prorated or refunded after the first day of class. No prorated tuitions will be given; full tuition is required. If you have any questions about the content or focus of the class, please contact Columbia Art Center before the class begins.

ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY Columbia Art Center has a zero tolerance policy for class disruption and aggression towards staff, instructors, students and visitors. Any type of aggressive behavior may be grounds for removal from Columbia Art Center. Columbia Art Center reserves the right to suspend or terminate class participation and usage of Columbia Art Center for inappropriate or abusive behavior or class disruption. No credits or refunds will be granted.

Release, Waiver of Liability and Indemnity Agreement In consideration for being allowed to use Columbia Association, Inc.’s ( “CA “) facilities and equipment, participate in any of CA’s classes and programs or avail myself of CA’s services (collectively, “CA activities “), I agree to abide by all rules established by CA. I hereby release CA, its officers, employees, instructors, trainers, agents or representatives (the “Releasees “) from all liability to the undersigned, my representatives, heirs and assigns, for any and all claims for any loss, damage, theft of personal property, personal injury, bodily injury or death, whether caused by the negligence of the Releasees or otherwise, arising as a result of CA activities.
