You are the spectator. You are the artist. Fidel Carey-Realmo’s interactive INFINITE CREATOR installation is an homage to the great creator within. Colorful, decorative boxes of all sizes will be located on the gallery floor, open to the public for putting them into various designs and patterns. As a backdrop to this interactive installation, Fidel’s abstract and mixed media paintings will be displayed on the gallery walls. TEAM-BUILDING PAINTING ACTIVITIES Individual Paintings: Each participant paints their own painting with the help of the instructor’s step-by-step instruction. One-Step, Two-Step Painting: Paint one step, then move to a different seat to continue to the next step. Collaborative Painting: Everyone in the group contributes to a large painting (3 feet by 4 feet). One collaborative painting is recommended for every 10 painters at the event. These works of art are ideal for displaying in the office. Mystery Masterpiece: Our instructor takes you through the painting process step-by-step. The fun twist with this project is that no one knows what the painting will look like until it is completed.

GRANDPARENT AND GRANDCHILD CARICATURE DRAWING CLASS For adult and child ages 5 and older With Joseph Whittington Let the fun begin! This intergenerational caricature drawing class will include one grandparent and one grandchild. You and your partner will draw each other — using basic shapes and your imagination — and see how the face slowly comes together. Creative exercises will help you to develop your technique. No supplies are needed; everything will be provided. Participants will be able to take home their work of art. Seating will be limited, so please include both names when registering. ART THROUGH THE CURRICULUM FOR HOME-SCHOOLERS For ages 5-16 With Cassandra Welker Choose a specific scholastic topic to examine from an artistic perspective. This art integration workshop will allow your children to experiment with an art technique and artistic medium while learning about a chosen curriculum with all their senses. Unless otherwise noted, supplies are included in the tuition. It is highly recommended that students wear old clothes or bring a smock for all activities. YOUNG ARTIST MASTERY PROGRAM For ages 6-17 Columbia Art Center’s Young Artist Mastery Program offers students the chance to earn discounts* on future classes while honing their artistic abilities. Whether used as a means for creative self-expression or to prepare for further artistic endeavors, this program will work to expand students’ skill levels, stretch their creativity and build confidence. Who Should Take This Program: Students ages 6-17 who have taken or will take classes or workshops at Columbia Art Center, starting Fall 2015 through the present session. Program Description: Students who complete four classes within 15 months of enrollment will receive a Level 1 Certificate, which includes a free portfolio review and a 25% discount on a future class or workshop. Participants who complete eight classes within 30 months of enrollment will receive a Level 2 Certificate, which includes a free portfolio review and a 50% discount on a future class or workshop. Participants who complete 12 classes will receive a Level 3 Certificate, which includes a free portfolio review and a free class or workshop (up to a $100 value). *Qualifying classes must be fee-based and meet for three or more sessions in order for students to receive a discount; three fee-based workshops will qualify as one class. Camps and School’s Out programs do not count toward the program.

ADULTS Ages 17 and Older CERAMICS NOTE: All spring 2018 enrolled ceramics students can use the open studio to practice their skills for free. The studio is available when classes are not in session. See listing of available open studio hours posted in the Ceramics Studio. Ceramics classes include use of studio equipment, all bisque firings, glazes and glaze firings for up to 20-25 medium-sized pieces (approximately 200 cubic inches each) per session, e.g. 25 pieces for a 10-week session, 20 pieces for an eight-week session, etc. Students who wish to produce more than 25 medium pieces each session will be charged an additional firing fee per cubic inch. Individual pieces that exceed 1,500 cubic inches in size are charged a separate firing fee. Individual tools and clay are not included. No production work, please.
LOW-FIRE CLASSES DINNERWARE: HANDBUILT FUNCTIONAL POTTERY With Christina McCleary All levels of clay experience welcome. Explore handbuilding techniques to create traditional dinnerware, including dinner and luncheon plates, soup and cereal bowls, and cups and mugs. Serving accessories such as pitchers, serving spoons and casseroles will also be covered. Use paper and foam templates, bisque molds, stamps, underglazes and slips to create a personalized dinnerware set for four. PORTRAITS IN WATERCOLOR With guest artist Joanna Barnum Learn how to build layers of warm and cool washes over a preliminary drawing to create naturalistic skin tones and build the illusion of a three-dimensional form, creating lively and expressive portrait paintings in watercolor. This workshop includes step-by-step demonstrations and the opportunity to work on personally directed pieces with assistance and critique. Students will work from personal photo references. Her approach to watercolor embraces the fluidity and expressive potential of the medium while emphasizing careful observation of color, light and form. As an instructor, she believes in fostering the unique voice of each student. She teaches concepts and techniques that may be personalized to each individual’s interests and needs. She encourages students to banish fear and reticence with fluid media and to appreciate its unpredictable qualities. Joanna is a Signature Member of the National Watercolor Society, a Signature Member and board member of the Baltimore Watercolor Society, an accredited member of the Maryland Society of Portrait Painters, and holds a bachelor’s degree from the Maryland Institute College of Art.
PORTRAIT WORKSHOP FOR INTERMEDIATE PAINTERS With Kate Cavanaugh Have you always wanted to paint portraits but don’t know where to start? This workshop will give you the tools to paint portraits without extensive drawing experience by using a transfer technique. Consultation will be given to each student to choose the best photograph to use as the painting reference. Bring an 8x10 or 9x11 canvas to class and a few high-resolution photos you wish to paint. In this one-hour workshop, Natalie Grigorian Sigmund, a Doctor of Oriental Medicine candidate at Maryland University of Integrative Health, will provide an overview of Chinese Medicine. Learn how acupuncture and Chinese herbs are used to treat and prevent many health problems, including chronic or acute pain, gynecological issues, digestive issues, depression, breathing or respiratory problems, and more. DISCOUNTS Columbia Art Center programs are offered at two rates: one for those with CA memberships or Columbia Cards, and the other for non-members. Non-members who live on CA-assessed property may obtain a free Columbia Card to receive the member rate for Art Center programs. To obtain a card, visit the Customer and Member Service Center (6310 Hillside Court). Columbia Cardholders are also eligible for discounts at pools and other facilities. Access to CA facilities and programs may be denied to a Columbia resident (member or non-member) whose property is the subject of a covenant violation referred to the Architectural Resource Committee for action.
SUPPLIES Adult students are responsible for purchasing their own materials for most classes. Refer to course description for clarification or call Columbia Art Center for additional information. A supply list for adult classes will be supplied upon registration.
CANCELLATION AND TUITION REFUNDS Columbia Art Center reserves the right to cancel any class for any reason. In the event Columbia Art Center must cancel a class, refund of tuition is guaranteed. Columbia Art Center rentals are available in our art galleries, studio rooms and Japanese garden. Enjoy a unique setting filled with original art for your next event.
Art displays change regularly. All rental rates include use of kitchen and restrooms. Limited number of tables and chairs are available for use. Renters are required to set up and clean rented studios. Catering is not provided by Columbia Art Center.
