MISSION STATEMENT Columbia Art Center is dedicated to providing artistic experiences in the visual arts for all ages and interest levels and to join with local arts organizations and community businesses in creating diverse offerings. OVERVIEW Columbia Art Center offers year-round art classes, rotating gallery exhibitions, a gallery gift shop, summer art camp for children, art birthday parties, studio rentals, a Japanese Garden, art and life enhancement lectures and more! Columbia Art Center is part of Columbia Association’s Community Services Division. Under Columbia Association, Columbia Art Center is 26 years old. It has been a functioning arts school for more than 30 years and was formerly known as the Antioch Visual Arts College. LOCATION Columbia Art Center is located in the Long Reach Village Center (next to Stonehouse Community Center) just minutes from Route 175 and Tamar Drive. DIRECTIONS From Route 29, take 175 East towards Jessup. Follow 175 for several miles to the light at Tamar Drive. Turn left on Tamar and go one mile. Turn right on Cloudleap Court. Turn left into Long Reach Village Center parking lot. Art Center is located in the courtyard past the fountain (look for large round window). From I-95, take the MD 100 West exit (43B) towards Ellicott City. Take the Snowden River exit (3). Enter the roundabout and take the second exit onto Snowden River Parkway. Turn right on Tamar Drive and drive .5 miles. Turn left at Cloudleap Court. Park in the Long Reach Village Center lot on left. School’s Out Program for grades 1-5 When Howard County public schools are out, come to the Art Center for an amazing day of creative fun and go home with cool art projects. Registration can be taken until the day before the School’s Out date. The program lessons will be available to view a month before each date. School’s Out Youth Visiting Artist Series for grades 6-8 Columbia Art Center is pleased to invite students ages 11-13 to participate in its Visiting Artist Series. The series is designed to encourage young artists to improve their technical skills while acquiring a sense of personal expression. The program provides an opportunity for students to connect with community artists and to cultivate a passion for the arts. Guest instructors will discuss their personal art and creative process while teaching a unique and challenging workshop. Columbia Art Center rentals are available in our art galleries, studio rooms and Japanese garden. Enjoy a unique setting filled with original
art for your next event. Art displays change regularly. Our rooms accommodate bridal and baby showers, corporate meetings, art and craft group meetings, lectures, art project rentals, birthday parties and celebrations of all sorts, even small weddings. Columbia Art Center provides tables and chairs. Room setup and take down are responsibility of renter. Please allow set-up and takedown time in your rental timeframe. For an additional fee, Columbia Art Center can set up room. Catering is not provided by Columbia Art Center. In this drop-in class, toddlers will explore a variety of colors, shapes, and textures using various age-appropriate tools and art supplies. PAINTING EXPLORATION For ages 6-9 with Manique Buckmon Who said fun and learning couldn’t be done at the same time? In this 4-week session, children will learn the basics of painting. Explore color values, mixing, and other principles of design, while learning different techniques developed by famous painters. At the time of your registration, you will be given a supplies list. In a fun and relaxing atmosphere, have fun using basic techniques of handbuilding (coil, pinch, slab) to express individuality and creativity. Projects will be colorful and creative, relating to the seasons, literature, music and more. As a group, you will work on one painting together, exploring various ways to begin a composition. You will then choose your own subject matter for a painting. DRAWING FOR YOUTH For ages 9-12 with Carol Zika Continuing students are encouraged to try this class! Children love to draw and they do so freely and with great joy. Preadolescents reach a point where they want to achieve new levels of realism in their work. To do this, they must learn to “see” with an artist’s eye. This course introduces methods to help reach their goals in a fun and productive way! Students will be introduced to graphite, charcoal, pastel and colored pencils. Tuition includes supplies. Thursdays, April 24-June 12, 4:30-6pm (8 sessions) $90 Residents/$100 Non-Residents PORTRAIT DRAWING FOR TEENS For ages 11-17 with Jacob Thompson Draw from live models! Ideal for homeschoolers! Begin with classroom studies of basic proportion and careful observation to achieve likeness and form. Learn skills which address drawing accuracy and explore modern techniques that focus on expressiveness through a variety of media and approaches. Live models will be used in the final three sessions. A $20 modeling fee is to be paid directly to the teacher at the first class. Tuesdays, April 29-June 3, 4-6pm (6 sessions) $75 Residents/$85 Non-Residents TEEN WHEEL-THROWING For ages 12-17 with Joe Vitek For both total beginners and those with clay experience! This class is designed for students who wish to learn the fundamental skills involved with making pottery on the wheel. All the basics from clay preparation, throwing techniques, and glazing will be taught. You can expect to learn how to make vases, mugs, bowls, and plates, as well as other forms according to ability and desire. (Clay, use of tools, glazing and firing are included in tuition.) Thursdays, April 24-June 12, 4- 6pm (8 sessions) $120 Residents/$130 Non-Residents COMIC WORKSHOP FOR TEENS For ages 12-17 with Clinton White If you ever wondered how to create comics or how to draw in anime/“manga” style, this is the workshop for you! Using live drawing demonstrations, discover how to draw and design characters in both western and Japanese “manga” comic book styles. Explore techniques for creating engaging characters, costumes and expressions. Workshop includes discussion, demo of basic story creation and page layout. HOMESCHOOL HOMESCHOOLING 21ST CENTURY LEARNING WORKSHOPS For ages 5-14 NEW! Designed for homeschool groups! Columbia Art Center’s youth coordinator, Monica Herber, will help you create a customized workshop that will address any age appropriate general studies objective and art objective. This tactile teaching style develops creative critical thinking skills and a deeper comprehension of material. With collaborative efforts of the Art Center’s experienced art instructors, your group will leave with a new understanding of an art genre and core educational topics. ART THROUGH THE CURRICULUM For ages 6-10 with Becky Legg Designed for individuals and groups! Learn about general subjects through a visual lens and hands-on exploration. This art integration class will allow students to develop artistic skills and techniques while learning age-appropriate basics in subjects such as language, mathematics, history, science and health. COLLAGE THE THEORY AND THE PRACTICE OF ART with George Sakkal NEW! This workshop will present a comparison analysis of the theory of Paul Cezanne’s Modern art with Marcel Duchamp’s Postmodern art and will show how both theories differ. In this workshop, you will use a glass base, metal shapes, and lots of nail polish to make this faux enamel jewelry creation. Just fill in the spaces with a variety of colors, let them dry, and finish with a glaze. The result is really incredible. You will have time to make several pieces to use as pendants or a bracelet. This necklace is made by winding wire onto a ½ inch mandrel, securing with 26 gauge wire, and then opening the spiral to create a truly unusual necklace. Connect the spirals with wire wrapped beads of your choice, add some chain and a clasp, and you’ve got a terrific new accessory. Please be sure you can make a wrapped loop prior to class. Class Policies & Procedures DISCOUNTS Individuals who live or work full-time on Columbia Association assessed property pay the discounted “Resident” tuition for classes. All others must pay the “Non-Resident” tuition. Access to CA facilities and programs may be denied to a Columbia Resident (member or non-member) whose property is the subject of a covenant violation referred to the Architectural Resource Committee for Action.
SUPPLIES Adult students are responsible for purchasing their own materials for most classes. Refer to course description for clarification or call Columbia Art Center for additional information. A supply list for adult classes will be supplied upon registration.
CANCELLATION AND TUITION REFUNDS Columbia Art Center reserves the right to cancel any class for any reason. In the event the Art Center must cancel a class, refund of tuition is guaranteed. Tuition cannot be credited, prorated or refunded after the first day of class. No prorated tuitions will be given; full tuition is required. If you have any questions about the content or focus of the class, please contact Columbia Art Center before the class begins.
