MISSION STATEMENT Columbia Art Center is dedicated to providing artistic experiences in the visual arts for all ages and interest levels and to connect with local arts organizations and community businesses in creating diverse offerings. OVERVIEW Columbia Art Center offers year-round art classes, rotating gallery exhibitions, a gallery gift shop, summer art camp for children, art birthday parties, studio rentals, a Japanese Garden, art and life enhancement lectures and more! Columbia Art Center is part of Columbia Association’s Community Services Division and has been part of Columbia Association for 29 years. It has been a functioning arts school for more than 30 years and was formerly known as the Antioch Visual Arts College.

DIRECTIONS From Route 29, take 175 East towards Jessup. Follow 175 for several miles to the light at Tamar Drive. Turn left on Tamar and go one mile. Turn right on Cloudleap Court. Turn left into Long Reach Village Center parking lot. The Art Center is located in the courtyard (look for the large round window and fish sculpture). From I-95, take the MD-100 West exit (43B) towards Ellicott City. Take the Snowden River Exit (3). Enter the roundabout and take the second exit onto Snowden River Parkway. Turn right on Tamar Drive and drive .5 miles. Turn left at Cloudleap Court. Park in the Long Reach Village Center lot on the left.

ARTreach is a free festival and will be held during the second week of Columbia Festival of the Arts. Salon Series Seth Kibel, Musician: The Origins of Jazz Enjoy an evening of music and discussion which focuses on the early decades of music now called jazz. The discussion will start with New Orleans where multiple ethnicities and several musical traditions all converged to give birth to this uniquely American musical genre. You will then travel to Chicago in the 1920s and wind up in New York, which ultimately becomes the epicenter of jazz from the 1930s up until the present day. Genres examined will include dixie-land, stride piano, early swing and big band music. No reservations required. Open to all ages. 7pm • FREE

RENTALS New gallery rental opportunity for summer months! Attention artists: If you would like to showcase your art and hold your own reception in a professional gallery setting, then here is an opportunity for you. Columbia Art Center now provides gallery space for rent during July and August. For a reasonable rate, you are welcome to rent the Main Gallery for one to two weeks, install your own show and host your own reception. Invite family, friends, community members, press, and art collectors. Enjoy an evening of fun and art with your girlfriends. Feel free to bring your own snacks and beverages! Girls’ Night Out provides a great way to spend a Thursday or Friday evening with your friends. SLAB HAPPY with Janice Crum For ages 21 and up. Have you always wanted to try your hand at making something with clay? Join us and see what it’s all about. In this workshop participants will cover basic methods of slab hand-building with clay to construct creative unique decor projects. Projects will then be stamped, carved and painted with colorful underglazes. It’s a great way to spend a night with your friends. Feel free to bring your own snacks and beverages. Please allow a minimum of two weeks for the drying and firing of finished work. Art camp for kids! for grades 1-8 • Director, Thomas Janasek

Art Camp provides exciting avenues of creativity and discovery to every camper in a healthy and safe environment. Each week has a unique theme to promote diverse and entertaining projects for each camp session. Campers experiment with colors, textures, mediums and performance methods through daily projects and lessons. Art Specialists teach visual and performing arts processes, including printmaking, painting, three-dimensional design, collage, drawing, clay works, puppetry, skit creation and much more. The young artists are encouraged to explore their imaginations and develop their own style of artistic expression. Additional programming includes Zumba® dance class, daily outdoor recreation time, swimming once a week and other performance related activities. There will be a special collaborative camp project or showcase at the end of each 1-week session. MIXED MEDIA MANIA For ages 5-10 with Korey Rosenbaum Have fun learning about the principles and elements of design by creating cultural projects using a variety of media including paints, found objects, fabric, paper and more! Students in grades 4-8 and any artistic ability can learn this easy and fun method of drawing linear, abstract patterns. Certified Zentangle® Teacher Arlene Mindus will guide you in creating hand-drawn art, one stroke at a time. The Zentangle® Method develops focus, creativity, hand-eye coordination, following stepby-step directions and problem solving techniques. A mini Zentangle® kit is provided and may be used for additional workshops. Study the bold and vibrant works of Haring’s graffitilike paintings seen on the subways and city walls of New York City! Explore Haring’s drawing and painting techniques that reveal simple and playful forms that carry positive messages about community, peace and equality. Examine Johns’ popular paintings of everyday objects in America and his use of simple shapes and primary colors. Supplies list will be given at the time of registration. By focusing on the fundamentals of color, shape and composition, students will

create drawings, paintings and collages inspired by Matisse and Picasso. We’ll experiment with art making techniques like color blocking and printmaking to create graphic images inspired by media, comics and our own lives. DRAWING FROM OBSERVATION For ages 11-17 with Liron Fisch Learn technical drawing skills to assist you in observational drawing. Foundations such as light, shadow, line and composition will be the focus of the class. Drawings will be developed by carefully observing still life subject matters under light sources. You will use charcoal, pencils and pastel. Mondays, July 6-27, 5-7pm (Four sessions) $50 Residents/$60 Non-Residents/ $25 Summer 2015 Art Camp participants PORTRAIT DRAWING FOR TEENS For ages 13-17 with Korey Rosenbaum Draw from live models! Begin with classroom studies of basic proportion and careful observation to achieve likeness and form. Learn skills which address drawing accuracy and explore modern techniques that focus on expressiveness. Live models will be used in the final three sessions. A $20 modeling fee is to be paid directly to the teacher at the first meeting. Tuesdays, April 21-May 26, 5-7pm (6 sessions) $85 Residents/$95 Non-Residents TEEN WHEEL-THROWING For ages 12-17 with Joe Vitek For both beginners and those with clay experience! This class is designed for students who wish to learn the fundamental skills involved with making pottery on the wheel. TEEN PRINTMAKING ON CLAY MINI DAY WORKSHOP For ages 12-17 with Megan Trail This two-week daily ceramics teen camp is designed for students who wish to learn the fundamental skills involved with creating images on clay. All the basics from clay preparation, handbuilding techniques and glazing will be taught, as well as explorations in creating representational and abstract images to be transferred onto clay forms. Students can expect to learn how to make vases, bowls and plates, as well as other forms according to ability and desire. Monday-Friday, July 13-24 and Monday, July 27, 2-4pm (11 sessions) $155 Residents/$165 Non-Residents PIZZA & PORTFOLIOS For ages 16 and up with Thomas Engleman College students welcome! Are you thinking about applying to art school or to a juried exhibition or perhaps for an internship? This workshop is for you! Learn how to organize and present your artwork. Ideal for both teens and adults! This program will incorporate a pizza lunch and include an in-depth critique of your work. This workshop will be led by Professor Thomas Engleman who holds an MFA in printmaking from the University of Miami FL and is an instructor of art at Howard Community College and American University. FIGURE DRAWING FOR TEENS For ages 12-17 with Korey Rosenbaum Improve your portfolio and observational drawing skills! Draw from live clothed models! In this six-day workshop, students will get comfortable rendering the human form in charcoal, pencil and ink. GLASS FUSED GLASS SQUARE BOWL SAMPLING WORKSHOP with Chaya Schapiro Back by popular demand! Are you fascinated by the beauty and richness of fused glass? Have you always wanted to try your hand at it, but weren’t sure what it entailed? Learn basic fused glass techniques and create your own fused glass square bowl. Bring your friends for a fun creative morning! Light refreshments will be available. Your creation will be ready for pick-up within two weeks following the workshop. WIRE WRAPPED SEA GLASS with Carolyn Parsa Have fun with your findings from the sea! In this intermediate class, we will learn to use wire to turn sea glass into a pendant. MOSAICS MOSAIC MIRROR WORKSHOP with Christina McCleary Explore the basics of mosaic design! In this workshop, learn how to cut and position tiles and grout your design. Bring any beads, ceramics pieces, seashells, or other accents to decorate your work. You will be given a framed mirror to mosaic! Your creation will be ideal for home decorating or giving as a gift. PRINTMAKING LINOLEUM BLOCK PRINTMAKING with Thomas Engleman NEW! This workshop is designed for all artistic levels! Participants will explore the foundational, technical strategies and techniques needed to successfully create compositions using Linoleum block printmaking. Class Policies & Procedures INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY If Howard County public schools are closed due to inclement weather, the Columbia Art Center will not hold daytime adult classes or any youth classes. For information regarding adult afternoon and evening classes and all weekend classes, please call the Columbia Art Center at 410-730-0075.

DISCOUNTS Individuals who live or work full-time on Columbia Association assessed property pay the discounted “Resident “ tuition for classes. All others must pay the “Non-Resident “ tuition. Access to CA facilities and programs may be denied to a Columbia Resident (member or non-member) whose property is the subject of a covenant violation referred to the Architectural Resource Committee for Action.

SUPPLIES Adult students are responsible for purchasing their own materials for most classes. Refer to course description for clarification or call Columbia Art Center for additional information. A supply list for adult classes will be supplied upon registration.

CANCELLATION AND TUITION REFUNDS Columbia Art Center reserves the right to cancel any class for any reason. In the event the Art Center must cancel a class, refund of tuition is guaranteed. Tuition cannot be credited, prorated or refunded after the first day of class. No prorated tuitions will be given; full tuition is required. If you have any questions about the content or focus of the class, please contact Columbia Art Center before the class begins.

ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY Columbia Art Center has a zero tolerance policy for class disruption and aggression towards staff, instructors, students and visitors. Any type of aggressive behavior may be grounds for removal from Columbia Art Center. Columbia Art Center reserves the right to suspend or terminate class participation and usage of Columbia Art Center for inappropriate or abusive behavior or class disruption. No credits or refunds will be granted.

RENTALRATES Columbia Art Center rentals are available in our art galleries, studio rooms and Japanese garden. Enjoy a unique setting filled with original art for your next event. Art displays change regularly. Our rooms accommodate bridal and baby showers, corporate meetings, art and craft group meetings, lectures, art project rentals, birthday parties and celebrations of all sorts, even small weddings. Columbia Art Center provides tables and chairs. Room setup and take down are responsibility of renter. Please allow setup and take-down time in your rental timeframe. For an additional fee, Columbia Art Center can set up room. Catering is not provided by Columbia Art Center. Release, Waiver of Liability and Indemnity Agreement In consideration for being allowed to use Columbia Association, Inc.’s ( “CA “) facilities and equipment, participate in any of CA’s classes and programs or avail myself of CA’s services (collectively, “CA activities “), I agree to abide by all rules established by CA. I hereby release CA, its officers, employees, instructors, trainers, agents or representatives (the “Releasees “) from all liability to the undersigned, my representatives, heirs and assigns, for any and all claims for any loss, damage, theft of personal property, personal injury, bodily injury or death, whether caused by the negligence of the Releasees or otherwise, arising as a result of CA activities. I further waive and covenant not to sue Releasees for any such claims.
