ARTrospective Ceramics Exhibit: Celebrating Columbia's 50th Birthday This retrospective exhibition features a variety of ceramics works created by instructors and students of Columbia Art Center since its creation in the early 1970s.
FUN EVENING OUT! SIGN PAINTING NIGHT: EVERYTHING MARYLAND For ages 17 and older With Mark Russo Back by popular demand! Open to all levels of art experience. Come show off your Maryland pride through wood art! During this fun evening workshop, you will have the opportunity to express those Maryland colors through designs such as the black-eyed Susan, Maryland blue crab or even the state flag itself. Tuition includes an 18 inch by 24 inch wooden canvas made from locally reclaimed wood and all paint supplies needed to create your beautiful, one-of-a-kind masterpiece. OFFICE ART RESCUE
Columbia Art Center is the ideal venue for companies to hold creative team-building painting activities in a relaxing atmosphere. The workshops can be held any day of the week based on availability. A canvas, easel, brushes, paints and smocks/aprons are provided for your team. You are welcome to bring refreshments or use a catering service. TEAM-BUILDING PAINTING ACTIVITIES Individual Paintings: Each participant paints their own painting with the help of the instructor’s step-by-step instruction. One-Step, Two-Step Painting: Paint one step, then move to a different seat to continue to the next step. Collaborative Painting: Everyone in the group contributes to a large, 3-foot by 4-foot painting. One collaborative painting is recommended for every 10 painters at the event. These works of art are ideal for displaying in the office. Mystery Masterpiece: Our instructor takes you through the painting process step-by-step. The fun twist with this project is that no one knows what the painting will look like until it is completed.
FREE FAMILY ART FRENZY Enjoy a free, family-friendly art afternoon on the second Sunday of each month. Experiment with mixed media and have fun creating your own inspired creations. All ages welcome. EXPLORERS OF THE WORLD: UNDERSTANDING COMMUNITY AND CULTURE Grades 1-8 Director: Korey Rosenbaum Extended Care available at Columbia Art Center Please call CA Camps at 410-715-3165 for registration and pricing. Art Camp provides exciting avenues of creativity and discovery to every camper in a healthy and safe environment. Each week has a unique theme to promote diverse and entertaining projects for each camp session. Campers experiment with colors, textures and mediums through daily projects and lessons. Art specialists teach visual and performing arts processes, including printmaking, drawing and painting, 3-D design, collage, clay, puppetry, skit creation and much more. The young artists are encouraged to explore their imaginations and develop their own style of artistic expression. Additional programming includes Zumba® dance class, daily outdoor recreation time, and swimming once a week. There will be a special collaborative camp project or show at the end of each session. Campers are grouped together by age. Please note: Campers are not permitted to go to the village center at any time during camp or extended care. 1- and 2-week sessions June 19-23 • Transportation and Technology Campers will explore modes of transportation around the world and how phones, tablets and the internet have influenced the way people connect across the world.
July 17-21 • Weather and Location From under the sea to the summit of a mountaintop, campers will explore how weather changes depending on where you are in the world.
June 26-30 • Language and Communication Campers will learn about different languages around the globe and consider how humans communicate through written, spoken and visual language.
July 24-Aug. 4 • Identity and Style Campers will learn about the history of textile patterns from around the globe and how pop culture and past tradition influences modern identity.
July 3-7 • Music and Celebration Campers will explore music from different continents and how various cultures celebrate in their communities.
Aug. 7-18 • Adventures and Travel Campers will become world travelers, adventuring to distant lands where they will imagine what life is or was like for a nomad on Earth.
July 10-14 • Food and Tradition Campers will learn how agriculture around the globe influences the cuisine of a country and how people create tradition around the kitchen table.

FOR KIDS SUMMER ART FINALE FOR YOUTH AND TEENS For ages 6-14 Come to Columbia Art Center for an exciting day of creative fun and go home with cool art projects. MOMMY AND ME INTRO TO JEWELRY: MEMORY WIRE BRACELET AND EARRINGS For children ages 4-10 With Shawnda Smith Perfect for beginner jewelry enthusiasts. Choose from a large variety of beads and charms to adorn your memory wire bracelet so that it will keep its shape and dangle just right on your wrist. Create a specific pattern or add a variety of beads and charms that inspire you. Students will also create earrings. Pick a theme or match an outfit! GRANDPARENT/ GRANDCHILD GRANDPARENT AND GRANDCHILD CARICATURE DRAWING CLASS For adult and child ages 5 and older With Joseph Whittington NEW! Let the fun begin! This intergenerational caricature drawing class will include one grandparent and one grandchild. You and your partner will draw each other — using basic shapes and your imagination — and see how the face slowly comes together. Creative exercises will help you to develop your technique. No supplies are needed; everything will be provided. Participants will be able to take home their work of art. Seating will be limited, so please include both names when registering. YOUNG ARTIST MASTERY PROGRAM For ages 6-17 Columbia Art Center’s Young Artist Mastery Program offers students the chance to hone their artistic abilities. Whether used as a means for creative self-expression or to prepare for further artistic endeavors, this program will work to expand students’ skill levels, stretch their creativity, and build confidence. Who Should Take This Program: Students ages 6-17 who have taken or will take classes or workshops at Columbia Art Center starting Fall 2015 through the present session. Program Description: Students who complete four classes will receive a Level 1 Certificate, which includes a free portfolio review and a 25 percent discount on a future class or workshop. Participants who complete eight classes will receive a Level 2 Certificate, which includes a free portfolio review and a 50 percent discount on a future class or workshop. Participants who complete 12 classes will receive a Level 3 Certificate, which includes a free portfolio review and a free full-term class. Register for free for the Young Artist Mastery Program when you sign up and pay for your first class. You will receive a punch card to track classes taken.
ABSTRACTION AS A FIRST LANGUAGE For ages 5-9 With Robyn Gavigan NEW! Learn unique ways to create art. Instead of using a brush and pencil, students will try marble splatter painting, feather watercolor paintings and collage with watercolor and acrylic. Have fun experimenting through mixed media materials. DRAWING SERIES 203: DRAWING AND PAINTING FROM OBSERVATION For ages 11-14 With Liron Fisch Build your portfolio! Learn to use various drawing and painting materials such as charcoal, graphite, watercolor and acrylic in order to complete multiple observational drawing projects. TEEN WHEEL-THROWING MINI-DAY WORKSHOP For ages 12-17 With Joe Vitek This two-week daily ceramics teen camp is designed for students who wish to learn the fundamental skills involved with making pottery on the wheel. All the basics from clay preparation, throwing techniques and glazing will be taught, as well as opportunities for some handbuilding. Students can expect to learn how to make vases, mugs, bowls and plates, as well as other forms according to ability and desire. GIVE IT A SPIN With Joe Vitek Have you always wanted to try your hand at the potter’s wheel? Then this wheel-throwing workshop is for you. Learn methods for centering clay and throwing bowl and cylinder forms. Enjoy learning how to decorate finished pieces using commercial underglazes. This workshop provides a great way to spend an afternoon with your friends. Please allow two weeks for the drying and firing of finished work.
ADULTS CERAMICS NOTE: All summer 2017-enrolled ceramics students can use the open studio to practice their skills for free. The studio is available when classes are not in session. See listing of available open studio hours posted in the Ceramics Studio. Ceramics classes include use of studio equipment, all bisque firings, glazes and glaze firings for up to 20-25 medium-sized pieces (approximately 200 cubic inches each) per session, e.g. 25 pieces for a 10-week session, 20 pieces for an eight-week session, etc. Students who wish to produce more than 25 medium pieces each session will be charged an additional firing fee per cubic inch. Individual pieces that exceed 1,500 cubic inches in size are charged a separate firing fee. Individual tools and clay are not included. No production work, please.
LOW-FIRE CLASSES DINNERWARE: HANDBUILT FUNCTIONAL POTTERY With Christina McCleary All levels of clay experience welcome. Explore handbuilding techniques to create traditional dinnerware, including dinner and luncheon plates, soup and cereal bowls, and cups and mugs. Serving accessories such as pitchers, serving spoons and casseroles will also be covered. Use paper and foam templates, bisque molds, stamps, underglazes and slips to create a personalized dinnerware set for four. With the use of low-fire earthenware clay, you will discover a world of bright colors, surface decorations and forms unique to the low-fire process and materials.

This is a very quick, spontaneous art that doesn’t require any particular talent — it is a way of expressing yourself with a variety of art materials, along with traditional Asian tools and paints. Images combined with personal phrases or thoughts is the essence of etegami along with the slogan: “It’s okay to be awkward. Awkwardness has charm.” There is no right or wrong way; etegami is a very forgiving and encouraging form of art used as a greeting card of sorts. All materials and tools will be supplied. PAINTING WORKSHOP
With guest artist Desiree Holmes Scherini Paint from nature in the center’s beautiful Japanese garden. Learn plein air painting techniques for working quickly with shifting light and the colorist use of the palette for expressing the landscape. There will be short demos on technique and compositional details to strengthen the design of your painting. This class is appropriate for students with a basic understanding of their chosen medium; no plein air painting experience is required! All mediums are welcome. Bring a basic set of colors and brushes for the medium you are working in and two to three canvases or sheets. Columbia Art Center will supply easels and lap boards. Class Policies & Procedures SEVERE WEATHER POLICY If Howard County public schools are closed due to inclement weather, Columbia Art Center will not hold daytime adult classes or any youth classes. DISCOUNTS Individuals who live or work full-time on Columbia Association-assessed property pay the discounted “Resident” tuition for classes. All others must pay the “Nonresident” tuition. Access to CA facilities and programs may be denied to a Columbia resident (member or non-member) whose property is the subject of a covenant violation referred to the Architectural Resource Committee for action.
