or visit ColumbiaArtCenter.org.

➤ Mon, Jan. 8, 7pm, free Young Adult Novels: Not Just for the Young at Heart With Laura Shovan

Young adult novels are aimed at teens, but many of these books have a loyal following among adults, too. Not only are books for teens well-written, but they also deal with classic literary themes, have the freedom to blend genres and tackle serious issues in a hopeful way. Join Laura Shovan and a panel of three authors as we examine the far-reaching appeal of young adult literature. Featured authors include Pintip Dunn, Karen Hattrup and C.P. Patrick.

➤ Sat, Feb. 10, 6pm, free Black Books Live: A Literary Podcast

Black Books Live is a podcast featuring literature by black authors. Writer, publisher and podcast creator Jason Harris and local authors will read new work and the work of classic authors such as James Baldwin, Zora Neale Hurston and Toni Morrison in honor of Black History Month.

➤ Mon, March 5, 7pm Seth Kibel and Sean Lane: The Birth of Bebop

The end of World War II also signified the end of the Swing Era, a period when jazz and popular music were basically synonymous. In the years that followed, a group of pioneering African-American musicians rebelled against the prevailing style and developed the next phase in jazz evolution — bebop. Initially cultivated in the after-hours jam sessions of Harlem, this new music found a home in the post-war years in the small nightclubs of 52nd Street in Manhattan. Seth and Sean will tell the stories and perform the music of such bebop pioneers as Charlie “Bird” Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk and more. Admission: $10 (purchase includes a past issue of Little Patuxent Review)

➤ Thu, April 5, 7pm Mike Giuliano and Marie Westhaver: Our Favorite Film Stars

Have a favorite actor? See if they make the list! Back by popular demand, this presentation marks the seventh time these fabulous HCC film professors have shared their film knowledge and expertise with our salon groups. About Encaustic Painting “What captivates me about encaustic painting is the surface. The painting seems more like a construction, a play of light, with a surface you want to touch. I use the encaustic painting to highlight my drawing. Added texture, luminosity, layers, and dimension aid in my construction or building of my artwork. I add, and take away, sometimes making the painting more of a sculptural form. The carving away is another form of drawing. You have to see it and touch it to understand. It is the back and forth nature of collage that lends itself well to encaustic painting. Collage elements add more texture, dimension and depth to the paintings.” --Marcie Wolf-Hubbard Short Bio Marcie Wolf-Hubbard received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland in studio art and studied fine art and illustration at the Maryland Institute College of Art. Her paintings have been shown in more than 70 exhibitions during the last 30 years, and she has illustrated for magazines and books as well as worked as a courtroom illustrator. Marcie is an instructor at Glen Echo Park, Yellow Barn Studios, and The Smithsonian and teaches art in her studio for children and adults.
