Fit for life CA offers classes and activities for residents of any age

By Tripp Laino

Columbia Association’s bevy of facilities and classes mean you can find the perfect fit for you — no matter what you like or how old you are. Elizabeth “Libby” Handy, 58, a CA member for the last three years, has been swimming for her entire life. She’s a frequent guest at Supreme Sports Club and said she loves the staff and the pool there. “They keep it cool, it’s always clean and there’s always lanes available,” she said. “It’s very well-run. The people are very nice; the people who work there, the members — everyone is very friendly.” Handy said she frequently uses the hot sauna available in the locker room, which helps with her arthritis, and likes that the pool isn’t too warm, which helps for swimming long distance (she swims about 21⁄2 miles during her workouts and said pools that are too warm make it hard to swim for distance).

Elizabeth “Libby” Handy swims at Supreme Sports Club several days a week.

Spotlight on Grassroots

G

Crisis Intervention and Homeless Shelter rassroots is a Columbia-based multiservice crisis intervention center started by college students in 1969 as a hotline to serve fellow students during a period of tragic drug overdoses by young people. Over the years, Grassroots has evolved to include multiple crisis intervention services requiring a professional staff and broader government and community FiLE Photo support. It is Howard County’s only 24/7 crisis Andrea Ingram intervention center and shelter for the homeless. Executive Director, Grassroots Today, Grassroots houses families and individuals in the Crisis Intervention Center 51-bed shelter on Freetown Road in Columbia, where over the course of the year about 150 people will reside while more stable living arrangements are sought for them. Another 100 people, half of them children, will spend time in the emergency shelter program in area motels when Grassroots is full and other accommodations aren’t immediately available. During the winter months, around 80 people will spend their nights at area faith communities as part of the Cold Weather Shelter we operate with outstanding volunteer assistance by faith community members. The 24-hour crisis intervention services Grassroots provides include walk-in crisis counseling, suicide prevention, outreach and education. Grassroots professionals met face-to-face with over 1,800 people and handled over 26,000 hotline calls last year. We also operate the Mobile Crisis Team, which responds to community emergencies such as traumatic death events, intense family conflict, psychiatric emergencies and risk of suicide. There were 825 responses last year. Another 904 people received services at the Grassroots Day Resource Center, where the chronically homeless often begin the process of reentering society. Grassroots is there when our friends and neighbors need help, and it provides that help without charge because of funding from Howard County Government, state and federal grants, United Way, and contributions from individuals, community groups, the faith community and local businesses. Private philanthropy is essential to Grassroots’ ability to give people a second chance. Columbia Association is one of the organizations upon which Grassroots relies for support. CA has collected food for the Grassroots Day Resource Center, and the Columbia Gym has been the site for two fundraising events, most recently “Glo for Grassroots,” a party for middle schoolers organized by student members of the Horizon Councils. Money has also been collected for the ChangeMatters campaign, a studentbased community service and philanthropy initiative that supports Grassroots. We are grateful for the support. Andrea Ingram Executive Director, Grassroots Crisis Intervention Center
