MISSION STATEMENT Columbia Art Center is dedicated to providing artistic experiences in the visual arts for all ages and interest levels and to join with local arts organizations and community businesses in creating diverse offerings. OVERVIEW Columbia Art Center offers year-round art classes, rotating gallery exhibitions, a gallery gift shop, summer art camp for children, art birthday parties, studio rentals, a Japanese Garden, art and life enhancement lectures, and more! Columbia Art Center is part of Columbia Association’s Community Services Division. Under Columbia Association, Columbia Art Center is 28 years old. It has been a functioning arts school for more than 30 years and was formerly known as the Antioch Visual Arts College. LOCATION Columbia Art Center is located in the Long Reach Village Center (next to Stonehouse Community Center) just minutes from Route 175 and Tamar Drive. DIRECTIONS From Route 29, take 175 East towards Jessup. Follow 175 for several miles to the light at Tamar Drive. Turn left on Tamar and go one mile. Turn right on Cloudleap Court. Turn left into Long Reach Village Center parking lot. Art Center is located in the courtyard past the fountain (look for large round window). From I-95, take the MD 100 West exit (43B) towards Ellicott City. Take the Snowden River exit (3). Enter the roundabout and take the second exit onto Snowden River Parkway. Turn right on Tamar Drive and drive .5 miles. Turn left at Cloudleap Court. Park in the Long Reach Village Center lot on left. SUMMER art camp for Art camp provides exciting avenues of creativity to every camper (grades 1-8) in a healthy, safe environment. Each week has a unique theme to promote diverse and engaging projects. Campers experiment with colors, textures, mediums, and performance methods through daily projects. Art activities include print-making, painting, 3-dimensional design, collage, clay, puppetry, skit creation, and more! Art camp also includes Zumba速 dance class, daily outdoor recreation time, and swimming once-a-week!

GALLERY SHOP The Gallery Shop at Columbia Art Center has for sale a variety of one-of-a-kind handcrafted and affordable art created by instructors and students. The Gallery Shop offers a selection of art ideal for gift-giving, home collections, and practical use, and includes functional pottery, jewelry, fiber, paintings, photographs, glass works, cards and more! Columbia Art Center rentals are available in our art galleries, studio rooms and Japanese garden. Enjoy a unique setting filled with original

art for your next event. Art displays change regularly. Our rooms accommodate bridal and baby showers, corporate meetings, art and craft group meetings, lectures, art project rentals, birthday parties and celebrations of all sorts, even small weddings. Columbia Art Center provides tables and chairs. Room setup and take down are responsibility of renter. Please allow set-up and take-down time in your rental timeframe. For an additional fee, Columbia Art Center can set up room. Catering is not provided by Columbia Art Center. PRESCHOOL CLASSES MOMMY AND ME ART PLAY DROP-IN For adult and child ages 2-5 with Laura Easter Drop-in Program! Back by popular demand! In this drop-in class, toddlers will explore a variety of colors, shapes, and textures using various age-appropriate tools and art supplies. Each class explores a new theme and experience for the child. Learn to mix colors, make new colors with various paint combinations, and have fun creating art projects with textures using sand, cloth, ribbon, leaves, pine cones, and more! Each class will include a short story time to give children the opportunity to learn how their masterpieces connect to the real world. Learn to construct small ceramic works of art you can use to adorn your jackets, sweaters, and more. Projects will then be stamped, carved, and painted with colorful underglazes. Because the Columbia Art Center wants students to focus on the activity and not worry about getting messy, it is recommended that they wear old clothes or bring a smock for all activities. PAINTING EXPLORATION For ages 6-9 with Liron Fisch Who said fun and learning couldn’t be done at the same time? In this 4-week session children will learn the basics of painting. Explore color values, mixing, and other principles of design, while learning different techniques developed by famous painters. Mondays, June 30-July 21, 5:30pm-7pm (4 sessions) or Mondays, July 28-August 18, 5:30-7pm (4 sessions) $50 Residents/$60 Non-Residents MIXED MEDIA EXPLORATION For ages 6-10 with Jackie Serpico Explore a variety of art techniques and terminology as you create two- and three-dimensional art works. Each week, you will learn how to incorporate different media as you explore drawing, painting, collage, printmaking, book and card-making, assemblage and more! Thursdays, July 17- August 14, 5-6:30pm (5 sessions) $60 Residents/$70 Non-Residents KIDS AND CLAY: MORE THAN MUD PIES For ages 6-11 with Megan Trail For youth at any level of clay experience. In a fun and relaxing atmosphere, have fun using basic techniques of handbuilding (coil, pinch, slab) to express individuality and creativity. MIXED MEDIA CREATIONS For ages 11-14 with Jackie Serpico Learn a variety of art techniques and about the design process as you create two- and three-dimensional art works. Each week, you will combine different mediums, drawing, painting, collage, printmaking, assemblage, mosaics and more, to make unique and expressive artworks. Mondays, July 14- August 11, 5-6:30pm (5 sessions) $60 Residents/$70 Non-Residents FUN WITH FONDANT For ages 11-15 with Susan Keiffer Back by popular demand this summer! Susan Kieffer, a Wilton Method Instructor, will lead you every step of the way as you create amazing hand shaped flowers, and artful bows out of fondant. Course includes learning how to make a fondant mum, rose, carnation, calla lily, rosebud, daisy, and leaves. You will finish the course by showcasing your skills in the design and decoration of your own cake! The confidence you’ll gain as you decorate with gum paste and fondant will enable you to create cakes that will add excitement to your family celebrations for years to come. Supplies that will be provided are: a 33cm rolling pin, fondant cutter embosser tool, 8 piece fondant cutting tool set, fondant smoother. PORTRAIT DRAWING FOR TEENS For ages 11-17 with Jacob Thompson Draw from live models! Ideal for homeschoolers! Begin with classroom studies of basic proportion and careful observation to achieve likeness and form. Learn skills which address drawing accuracy and explore modern techniques that focus on expressiveness through a variety of media and approaches. Live models will be used in the final 3 sessions. READY SET PRINT For ages 12-17 with Megan Trail NEW! Imagine, Ink, and Print! Students will learn traditional screen printing and edition techniques. Enhance your drawing skills by exploring alternative mediums. Projects will focus on historical aspects of the print medium, as well as having collaborative components with fellow students. DRAWING FROM OBSERVATION For ages 12-17 with Jacob Thompson NEW! Build your portfolio! Learn technical drawing skills to assist you in observational drawing. Drawings will be developed by carefully observing still life subject matters under light sources. You will use charcoal, pencils, and pastel drawing mediums. Foundations such as light and shadow, line, and composition will be the focus of the class. Monday-Friday, July 14-July 25, 1-3pm (10 sessions) $145 Residents/$155 Non-Residents TEEN WHEEL-THROWING MINI DAY WORKSHOP For ages 12-17 with Joe Vitek This two-week daily ceramics teen camp is designed for students who wish to learn the fundamental skills involved with making pottery on the wheel. All the basics from clay preparation, throwing techniques, and glazing will be taught, as well as opportunities for some hand-building. Students can expect to learn how to make vases, mugs, bowls, and plates, as well as other forms according to ability and desire. Monday-Friday, July 7-July 18, and Monday, July 21, 2-4pm (11 sessions) $155 Residents/$165 Non-Residents

NEW! Columbia Art Center is excited to announce a class especially designed for children with different abilities. Art is all positive as there is no right or wrong way; it’s a form of selfexpression. Each class will provide a small group of children an opportunity to enjoy a multisensory experience, delving into various materials and creating art projects which they can take home. Create cards, ornaments, sculptures, and accessories using clay, fabric, paper, and recycled materials. Each class will be based on a story book or theme that will be tailored to the child’s special abilities. These classes will not only help participants create art, but will help them to learn life skills, social skills, problem-solving skills, motor skills, time management, and help them to build confidence. Come have fun, make new friends and learn with other children who love art. Seats are limited so enroll now! Prerequisites: Non-aggressive, enjoys working in groups and capable of independent work with close supervision. TEEN WHEEL-THROWING For ages 12-17 with Joe Vitek For both total beginners and those with clay experience! This class is designed for students who wish to learn the fundamental skills involved with making pottery on the wheel. All the basics from clay preparation, throwing techniques, and glazing will be taught, as well as opportunities for some hand-building. You can expect to learn how to make vases, mugs, bowls, and plates, as well as other forms according to ability and desire. (Clay, use of tools, glazing and firing are included in tuition.) Thursdays, July 24- August 28, 2-4pm (6 sessions) $120 Residents/$130 Non-Residents COMIC WORKSHOP FOR TEENS For ages 12-17 with Clinton White Have you ever wondered how to make amazing comics or how to draw in anime/manga style? Then this workshop is for you! Using live drawing demonstrations, students will discover how to draw and design their own characters in both Western and Japanese “Manga’ comic book styles. Explore techniques for creating engaging characters, costumes and expressions. Workshop includes discussion, basic story creation techniques and page layout. Have a great time creating your own unique comic book story. ADVANCED COMIC WORKSHOP For ages 12-17 with Clinton White Prerequisite: Comic Workshop for Teens (see previous entry). Continue developing your skills as a comic artist as you explore techniques for creating engaging characters, costumes and expressions. Workshop includes ideas and methods of how to publish your own comic book. Leave with printed comic book pages to show friends and family. Learn about and create many different types of graffiti by generating unique, original pieces that express you! Tag a piece of furniture or object! Using actual graffiti markers and paints, you will make individual as well as group pieces. No experience necessary! Just come and have fun! CALLIGRAPHY INTRODUCTION/CONTINUING CALLIGRAPHY with Sandy Olson Beginning and continuing students welcome! Learn broad pen lettering to create “Bookhand” or “Foundational” basic minuscule and capitals, perfect for poems, envelopes, signs, and writing books! Have fun working with “dip” pens and black ink, as well as watercolors and gouache. At the time of your registration, a supplies list will be provided to you. SPECIAL CERAMIC TOPICS SERIES THE ART OF SERVING with Megan Trail NEW! Create beautiful hand-built dessert dishes with texture, sgraffito, mishima and more. In this 4 week class you will learn about a variety of dessert dish forms while exploring cultural ceremonies throughout history. Discussions of how to marry form and purpose will be the point of departure for creating your set of dessert ware. Students will focus on shape, rims, handles and foot making techniques. In this four-week class participants will learn how to fabricate plaster molds to expand their unique voice in clay. Students will explore the stages involved in plaster mold production, beginning with the construction of a master model derived from a hand-sculpted master clay form. Participants will make and use plaster press, hump, and slump molds, using the “icing” plaster application method. Demonstrations will include methods for casting and techniques like lofting and sledging to construct master forms. Upon completion, each participant will take home their own set of plaster molds. Making a beautiful doll doesn’t have to be complicated. Learn the basics of creating a figure out of clay with movable parts. Whether you like quirky and fun or serious and surreal, each student will explore concepts of expressiveness and gesture to make their doll unique. This class will take students from the sketching and planning stage all the way through to construction and assembly of a simple doll. Sketchbooks are highly recommended for this class. This class will meet every other week to allow for students to have more working time. COLLAGE THE THEORY AND THE PRACTICE OF ART with George Sakkal This workshop will present a comparison analysis of the theory of Paul Cezanne’s Modern art with Marcel Duchamp’s Postmodern art and will show how both theories differ. Comparisons will be made in three distinct areas of their two theories: the unconscious mind versus the conscious mind, retinal vision versus conceptual vision, repetition versus the readymade. Learn about and explore Cognitive Unconscious Visualism known as CUVISM, a human creative capacity that George, himself, takes credit for having discovered. To understand the way in which CUVISM plays a hand in artistic creativity, you will engage in the methodology of creating a small collage during the workshop. Class Policies & Procedures INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY If Howard County public schools are closed due to inclement weather, the Columbia Art Center will not hold daytime adult classes or any youth classes. For information regarding adult afternoon and evening classes and all weekend classes, please call the Columbia Art Center at 410-730-0075.

DISCOUNTS Individuals who live or work full-time on Columbia Association assessed property pay the discounted “Resident” tuition for classes. All others must pay the “Non-Resident” tuition. Access to CA facilities and programs may be denied to a Columbia Resident (member or non-member) whose property is the subject of a covenant violation referred to the Architectural Resource Committee for Action.

SUPPLIES Adult students are responsible for purchasing their own materials for most classes. Refer to course description for clarification or call Columbia Art Center for additional information. A supply list for adult classes will be supplied upon registration.

CANCELLATION AND TUITION REFUNDS Columbia Art Center reserves the right to cancel any class for any reason. In the event the Art Center must cancel a class, refund of tuition is guaranteed. Admission is open to everyone. Advanced registration is required and early enrollment is advised to reserve a space in each class and to avoid possible cancellation. A class will be cancelled if minimum enrollment is not met three days prior to the class beginning. Several classes have pre-requisites. Please read course descriptions carefully. PAYMENT Full payment must accompany the registration form and is required to hold your space in class. Registration and payment may be done in person, by mail, by fax, or over the phone. Release, Waiver of Liability and Indemnity Agreement In consideration for being allowed to use The Columbia Association, Inc.’s (“CA”) facilities and equipment, participate in any of CA’s classes and programs or avail myself of CA’s services (collectively, “CA activities”), I agree to abide by all rules established by CA. I hereby release CA, its officers, employees, instructors, trainers, agents or representatives (the “Releasees”) from all liability to the undersigned, my representatives, heirs and assigns, for any and all claims for any loss, damage, theft of personal property, personal injury, bodily injury or death, whether caused by the negligence of the Releasees or otherwise, arising as a result of CA activities. I further waive and covenant not to sue Releasees for any such claims. I am voluntarily participating in CA activities with knowledge of the possible dangers involved, and hereby agree to accept any and all inherent risks of bodily injury, death or property damage. I further agree to indemnify and hold harmless the Releasees from any loss, liability, damage or cost, including attorneys’ fees, they may incur due to my CA activities, whether caused by the negligence of the Releasees or otherwise. I further agree that this Release and Indemnity Agreement is intended to be as broad and inclusive as permitted by the law of the State of Maryland and that if any portion hereof is held invalid, the remainder of the Agreement will continue in full legal force and effect. I affirm that I am of legal age, am freely signing this Agreement, and if the participant in CA activities is a minor, that I am the parent or legal guardian of that minor. I have read this Agreement and fully understand that I am giving up legal rights and remedies that I, and if applicable, my spouse, the minor, or a legal guardian for the minor might have now or in the future.
