Winter weather
T
CA preps for snow By David Greisman
hey are ready from the earliest forecasts until the first flakes fall. And Columbia Association’s crews are then in action until snow problems become no problem. Depending on who you are, winter weather can either be inconvenient or convenient. Some enjoy staying at home, sipping on hot chocolate and binge-watching Netflix. But others come down with serious cases of cabin fever and want to get out as soon as they can. CA helps by digging out CA facilities and walkways throughout the community. “We want to help the community get “We want to help the back to normal,” said Sean Harbaugh, community get back to assistant director of CA’s Open Space normal. After a typical Management division. “After a typical winter storm, CA can winter storm, CA can have snow and ice have snow and ice removed within a day.” removed within a day.” That’s good for the kids who rely on Sean Harbaugh, CA’s pathways and sidewalks to get to assistant director of CA’s school, and also for the adults who use Open Space Management division them to travel around town. And that’s great for anyone who wants to work out, swim or skate at CA’s sport and fitness facilities or conduct business at any of the many village community association buildings and neighborhood centers once it becomes safe to do so. All of this is a sizable job. There are more than 40 buildings in all, many of which have their own parking lots. CA has about 95 miles of pathways. And like other property owners, CA is responsible for the sidewalks adjoining its land, which means there’s a total of 25 more miles to clear. That’s why a normal storm will bring in 50 people working in shifts from CA’s Open Space Management and Golf Course Maintenance divisions. Their first priority is taking care of the parking lots at CA’s facilities. After that come the sidewalks and plazas around the facilities and CA’s pathways and sidewalks. They have shovels, plows, salt spreaders and snow blowers — plus plenty of coffee to help keep them warm. Larger storms will of course take longer to handle, and major snowfall can mean the teams will be supplemented with assistance from contractors. “It can be a heavy task,” Harbaugh said. “There’s a lot of snow and ice to move and a lot of places to remove it.” And once they’re done, they dry off, warm up and get ready for the next one.
