t’s common to think about the ways you can give back to your community around the holidays — and CA has some great ways to help. Two of those ways are the Volunteer Center Serving Howard County, which connects volunteers to organizations in need of help, and the Columbia Community Exchange (CCE) time bank, which turns tasks like weeding a garden, replacing a light switch or teaching crocheting into time dollars, which you can then spend to get assistance on a task you need help with. But it’s important to note that help is needed all year long — and both of these organizations can help you find a way to do that whether it’s November or mid-summer.

t Columbia Association’s (CA) Board of Directors meeting on Sept. 28, the board approved changes to the charter for the Office of Internal Audit and discussed the Assessment Share Work Group’s final report and recommendations. The work sessions on Oct. 12 and Oct. 19 were related to CA’s budget. The board meeting on Oct. 26 was after CA Monthly went to press. CA’s Board typically holds a work session on the second Thursday of each month and a meeting on the fourth Thursday. However, in November, both the work session and meeting will be held Nov. 9. The meeting can be seen at ColumbiaAssociation.org/livestream; work sessions are not recorded. For more information, please go to ColumbiaAssociation.org/board. 2 C A M O N T H LY

Letter from:

Howard County Office of Veterans and Military Families

Serving Howard County’s military community

M

ore than 20,000 veterans call Howard County home — about 1 in every 16 people who live here. To ensure the military community and their loved ones receive the support they deserve, the Howard County Office of Veterans and Military Families partners with local, state and federal agencies, nonprofits, and community and business partners to provide, advocate for, and sponsor important initiatives and programs. We work to serve the growing needs of Howard County veterans and their families, dependents and survivors, providing guidance, information and access to resources. We also promote activities for veterans of all ages — including educational and employment opportunities — and work with other service providers to address more complex issues. We can help connect our military families, as well as employers and educators of military family members, with resources in the areas of housing, recreation, wellness, legal, finance and mental health. Earlier this year, the annual Veterans Resource Fair hosted 49 organizations that support veteran services and programs, plus 12 businesses that specifically recruit veterans and military spouses for employment. Through the Reserved Veteran Parking Initiative, several local businesses — including The Mall in Columbia and Howard County General Hospital — have installed signs in their lots. We also partnered with the American Legion, VFW and the Boy Scouts to install an American flag retirement container at the Alpha Ridge landfill. Over the next two months, several events and programs are planned to mark Veterans Day while celebrating and honoring veterans. Please visit our website at howardcountymd.gov/veterans for the full schedule. If you would like to support veteran initiatives, the Howard County Commission on Veterans and Military Families meets the first Thursday of each month at 7pm at 6751 Columbia Gateway Drive. These meetings are open to the public. The commission recently created a Community Service/Recognition Award program to formally acknowledge individuals and organizations for their significant contributions to programs or initiatives that honor and serve military veterans and their families. The Howard County Veterans Foundation is seeking committee members and donations to support the veterans’ monument that will be installed at the Downtown Columbia Lakefront. A site dedication was held in June to kick off fundraising efforts. Learn more at howardcountyveterans.org. For more information about the Howard County Office on Veterans and Military Families, visit howardcountymd.gov/veterans. If you need assistance, please contact us at 410-313-6400 or veterans@howardcountymd.gov. Lisa B. Terry Manager, Howard County Office of Veterans and Military Families

Giving (from page 1)

Guided giving The Volunteer Center’s annual Guide to Giving came out this month, and it’s filled to the brim with volunteer opportunities ranging from clerical office work to helping stock food pantries — there’s a volunteer opportunity for everyone. In 2017, the Volunteer Center celebrated its 15th anniversary by launching the 50-50 Challenge. Community members were encouraged to pledge between 15 and 50 hours of service in honor of Columbia’s 50th Birthday. As of September, more than 30 volunteers had responded and collectively completed more than 1,200 hours of service. Twenty community organizations also elected to participate, pledging and offering approximately 940 hours of service opportunities to community members. Anyone who completes their pledge by Wednesday, Dec. 20 will be entered into a drawing for a $50 gift certificate. For more information on the challenge, visit VolunteerHoward.org/ 5050challenge. For more information, visit ColumbiaAssociation.org/volunteer.

Time banking offers a way to lend a hand, get help Need a little help around the house? Have skills to offer a neighbor? Then you’re the perfect candidate for the Columbia Community Exchange (CCE) time bank. CCE is a program offered by CA to help facilitate neighbors helping one another through a mutual exchange of services. Membership is free and follows a simple formula: one hour of helping a member earns a Time Dollar, which can be spent on an hour of help from another member. Skills and talents of all types can be put to use in the program. Some of the most common requests are for transportation and help around the house or in the yard, according to Patricia Dugan, manager of the Columbia Community Exchange. Education — like teaching someone how to use their new tablet or phone — is another oft-requested item. “Time banking values the time spent together rather than the specific skill exchanged,” Dugan said. “People offer and request services ranging from rides to the airport to genealogy lessons.” For more information, visit ColumbiaAssociation.org/timebank.
