GALLERY SHOP The Gallery Shop sells a variety of handcrafted and affordable art created by instructors and students. The shop’s selection of art is ideal for gift giving, home collections and practical use and includes pottery, jewelry, fiber, paintings, photographs, glass, cards and more!

Columbia Art Center

RENTALS Columbia Art Center rentals are available in our art galleries, studio rooms and Japanese garden. Enjoy a unique setting filled with original art for your next event. Art displays change regularly. Our rooms accommodate bridal and baby showers, corporate meetings, art and craft group meetings, lectures, art project rentals, birthday parties and celebrations of all sorts, even small weddings. Columbia Art Center provides tables and chairs. Room setup and take down are responsibility of renter. Please allow set-up and take-down time in your rental timeframe. For an additional fee, Columbia Art Center can set up room. Catering is not provided by Columbia Art Center. Art camp for kids! for grades 1-8 • Director, Korey Rosenbaum

Art Camp provides exciting avenues of creativity and discovery to every camper in a healthy and safe environment. Each week has a unique theme to promote diverse and entertaining projects for each camp session. Campers experiment with colors, textures and mediums through daily projects and lessons. Art specialists teach visual and performing arts processes, including printmaking, drawing and painting, 3-dimensional design, collage, clay, puppetry, skit creation and much more. The young artists are encouraged to explore their imaginations and develop their own style of artistic expression. Additional programming includes Zumba® dance class, daily outdoor recreation time, and swimming once a week. There will be a special collaborative camp project or show at the end of each one-week session. Campers are grouped together by age. Please note: Campers are not permitted to go to the village center at any time during camp or extended care.

School’s Out Program for grades 1-8 Make the last couple weeks of summer the best! The School’s Out program is as fun and imaginative as it is educational. Children experience unique opportunities to create amazing memories and develop lasting friendships. YOUTH &TEEN CLASSES

Unless otherwise noted, supplies are included in the cost of tuition for youth classes. Because Columbia Art Center wants students to focus on the activity and not worry about getting messy, it is recommended that they wear old clothes or bring a smock for all activities. YOUNG ARTIST MASTERERY PROGRAM For ages 6-17 Columbia Art Center’s Youth Artist Mastery Program offers students the chance to focus on their studies as they hone their artistic abilities. Whether used as a means for creative self-expression or to prepare for further artistic endeavors, these classes and workshops will work to expand participants’ skill levels and stretch their creativity while building confidence and artistic sensibility. Who Should Take This Program: Students ages 6-17 who took or will take classes or workshops at Columbia Art Center during the Fall 2015 through the present session. Program Description: Students are asked to complete four classes which will enable them to receive a Level 1 Certificate which includes a free portfolio review and a 25-percent discount on a future class or workshop. Participants who complete eight classes will receive a Level 2 Certificate that includes a free portfolio review and 50-percent discount on a future class or workshop. Participants who complete 12 classes will receive a Level 3 Certificate which includes a free portfolio review and a free class. Register for free for the Youth Artistic Master Certificate Program when you sign up and pay for your first class — classes taken during the Fall 2015, Winter 2016 and Spring 2016 sessions can apply to the Certificate Program.

EXPERIMENTS WITH SPLATTER PAINTING For ages 10-14 With Fidel Carey-Realmo Experience the blast and excitement of splatter painting expression as we explore and invent new techniques of putting paint onto canvas, cardboard, found objects and furniture. This is about creating freely and painting how and what you want. No experience necessary. EXPLORING SOUND IN FOUND OBJECT SCULPTURE For ages 10-17 With Adam Goode String Instruments Using basic physics of sound wave vibration, we’ll create objects that can be plucked, strummed or bowed to create a variety of pitches. Using found objects, we’ll drill and reshape them into working instruments. Tuesday, Aug. 23, 1-3pm (one session) $20 Columbia residents/$30 nonresidents Percussion Instruments Tubulums, drums, hands, mallets and sticks. Together, we will find the slap, tap and boom of common objects to create one of a kind sound sculptures. Wednesday, Aug. 24, 1-3pm (one session) $20 Columbia residents/$30 nonresidents Junkyard Sounds Using basic circuits, we’ll create electronic pickups to amplify the sounds around us. We’ll attach pickups to stringed, drummed or vibrated surfaces. BASIC ZENTANGLE® For ages 9-11 With Arlene Mindus, CZT NEW! Join Certified Zentangle Teacher Arlene Mindus in creating an animal, one stroke at a time, using the Zentangle Method. All the basics from clay preparation, throwing techniques and glazing will be taught, as well as opportunities for some hand-building. Students learn how to make vases, mugs, bowls and plates, plus other forms according to ability and desire. Clay, use of tools, glazing and firing are included in tuition. GIVE IT A SPIN With Joe Vitek Have you always wanted to try your hand at making something on the potter’s wheel? Well, join us and see what it’s all about. In this three-hour workshop participants will cover methods of centering clay and throwing bowl and cylinder forms. It’s a great way to spend an afternoon. Students will decorate finished pieces using commercial underglaze and slips. Please allow a minimum of two weeks for the drying and firing of finished work. LOW-FIRE LOW-FIRE: INDEPENDENT SEMINAR Designed as an independent study for continuing intermediate/advanced low-fire clay handbuilding and sculpture students to pursue ongoing independent projects. PLASTER MOLD MAKING With Kyle Bauer In this four-week class, participants will learn how to expand their unique voice in clay through the use of plaster molds. Students will explore the stages involved in plaster mold production. We will begin with lofting master forms, then discuss proper methods for casting a mold from found objects and finish with proper care/storage of plaster molds. Demonstrations will include proper plaster mixing, pouring and mold finishing techniques with press, hump and slump molds. Upon completion, each participant will take home their own set of plaster molds. Intermediate and advanced levels. GUEST ARTIST WORKSHOP

FUNDAMENTALS OF OIL PAINTING

Steve Fleming In this two-day workshop you will gain a basic understanding of how to start a painting and the excitement of beginning a wonderful relationship with the fabulous medium of oil paint. You will start by establishing dark and light shapes and mixing their correct values and approximate colors. The class also will focus on brushwork and the direct application of paint. Without a good start to an oil painting, every step in the process will be flawed. All levels of students are welcome. Steve will create a complete painting and demonstrate the process of turning the complicated into a focused and conceptbased painting. Students will do multiple paintings with Steve’s individual instruction and positive group critiques. The class will work from photographs in order to judge color and value interpretations. Supply list will be provided at time of registration. Steve Fleming is an artist who works in watercolor, acrylic and oil. He teaches for the Art League in Alexandria, Virginia, as well as workshops across the country and abroad. His style of teaching is lively and instructional. He is known for his expressive drawing style, creative use of color and the ability to break down the painting and drawing to very understandable and repeatable steps, making all students feel capable.

Class Policies & Procedures INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY If Howard County public schools are closed due to inclement weather, Columbia Art Center will not hold daytime adult classes or any youth classes. For information regarding adult afternoon and evening classes and all weekend classes, please call Columbia Art Center at 410-730-0075.

DISCOUNTS Individuals who live or work full-time on Columbia Association assessed property pay the discounted “Resident” tuition for classes. All others must pay the “Non-Resident” tuition. Access to CA facilities and programs may be denied to a Columbia Resident (member or non-member) whose property is the subject of a covenant violation referred to the Architectural Resource Committee for Action.

SUPPLIES Adult students are responsible for purchasing their own materials for most classes. Refer to course description for clarification or call Columbia Art Center for additional information. A supply list for adult classes will be supplied upon registration.

CANCELLATION AND TUITION REFUNDS Columbia Art Center reserves the right to cancel any class for any reason. In the event Columbia Art Center must cancel a class, refund of tuition is guaranteed.
