Bike Through History At the 11th Annual BikeAbout on May 14 ot a lot of people can say they know the history behind the city they live in. But in Columbia, residents have the opportunity to learn more about their city by attending Columbia Association’s BikeAbout event. CA will hold its 11th annual BikeAbout on Saturday, May 14 at the Downtown Columbia Lakefront. Bikers can begin their learning expedition across Columbia between 9:30 and 10:30am. BikeAbout also offers a walking tour that will begin at 10:30am. Created by CA’s Columbia Archives and Open Space Division, BikeAbout brings history, nature and bicyclists together in an event that celebrates Columbia. Every year, up to 300 bicyclists ride through Columbia’s pathways to learn about Columbia’s history. This year, the event will highlight areas like the BMX track in Harper’s Choice, Hobbit’s Glen Golf Course and the mid-20th century

N

contemporary architecture of the homes of the Birches section in Wild Lake. The walking tour allows non-bikers to be part of the fun. A new route has been added that takes walkers across the Route 29 pedestrian bridge and into Oakland Mills to explore a historic cemetery. “The goal of BikeAbout is twofold,” said Barbara Kellner, director of the Columbia Archives, “to enjoy the beautiful paths of Columbia that wind through woods, along stream beds and through neighborhoods and to learn the history of Columbia.” The event is free and open to all. Columbia is the ideal community for such a successful event because it has an attentive Open Space Division that keeps the pathways in great conditions and an archive that has treasured Columbia’s history for years, said Kellner. BikeAbout spreads not only history to Columbia residents, but the idea of alternate transportation as well.

Volunteers T Needed to staff a Volunteer Mobilization Center in times of disaster

“Bicycling is inexpensive, it burns lots of calories and it doesn't do anything to pollute the air. BikeAbout, in showing the connectivity of the paths and streets, hopefully informs people that you can get from point A to point B by bicycle,” said Kellner. So there you have it, if you are

looking for an all-day learning experience and a fun-in-the-sun activity, BikeAbout is where you want to be. After all, with gas prices so high, a day of biking might help you save a few dollars! For more information about BikeAbout, visit ColumbiaArchives.org or call 410715-3103.

Each year, residents ride their bikes along the Columbia pathways during BikeAbout to learn more about their city’s history.

he Volunteer Center Serving Howard County will be holding two training sessions this month for volunteers interested in helping staff a disaster Volunteer Mobilization Center (VMC) during times of disaster and recovery. The classroom training session will be held on Thursday, May 19, from 6:30-8:30pm at the Volunteer Center Serving Howard County (10221 Wincopin Circle). A simulation training session will be held on Saturday, May 21, from 11am-2pm at the Glenwood Library (2350 Rt. 97). Participants are encouraged to attend both training sessions. The purpose of the VMC is to coordinate community needs with spontaneous volunteers who come forward to help with tasks that include clean up or information distribution. In the event of a disaster, VMC volunteers will help harness the power of spontaneous

volunteers by registering and referring them to agencies that are requesting additional help. VMC volunteers will provide a variety of services including greeting, interviewing, making volunteer referrals, taking requests from agencies in need of assistance, conducting safety briefings and tracking data. VMC volunteers will not engage in any strenuous physical activity; they will help get other volunteers to the right place at the right time during a disaster. All disaster-trained VMC volunteers will be notified when a VMC is activated, they will not self-deploy. In Howard County, a VMC is deployed at the request of Howard County’s Department of Citizen Services. For more information or to register for the training sessions, e-mail Pam@VolunteerCenter.org or call 410-715-3179 prior to May 18.
