Columbia Association (CA) offers recreational, cultural and community services for Columbia and Howard County, including the Maggie J. Brown Welcome Center, three fitness clubs, Columbia Art Center, free summer lakefront concerts and movies, Columbia Archives, the Volunteer Center Serving Howard County, international exchange and multicultural programs, the Columbia Community Exchange time bank, the Youth and Teen Center, Hobbit’s Glen and Fairway Hills golf clubs, four tennis clubs, 23 outdoor swimming pools (including two Mini-WaterParks), Columbia Swim Center and SplashDown, and a SportsPark with mini-golf, skating ramps, batting cages and more. In 2014, CA opened its newest facility, Haven on the Lake, a mind body wellness retreat, in Downtown Columbia. CA also maintains more than 3,600 acres of open space, lakes, parks, tot lots, basketball and tennis courts and more than 94 miles of walking, jogging and biking pathways. Create, Learn and Explore Columbia Art Center

Daytime art classes include Watercolor, Introduction to Wheel-Ceramics, Healing Arts and jewelry-making workshops. Columbia Art Center also offers a Salon Series with Little Patuxent Review, which includes free monthly presentations by musicians, artists, poets, writers, thespians and more! The best way to view art is in person: getting in front of a painting so you can see the actual texture of the paint; moving around a sculpture so you can view it from every angle; or even in a studio, watching the art as it being created. This series will bring you up close and personal with famous artworks and with brand new art! • Howard County Literary Reading Series Columbia Art Center presents a new and free literary reading series that features local poets and authors, as well as an open mic for

interested audience members. Sponsored by Howard County Poetry and Literary Society and coordinated by Laura Shovan, Ann Bracken, and Linda Joy Burke. Free of charge and no registration is necessary. Columbia Archives

Columbia Archives, a service of Columbia Association, collects and preserves the history of Columbia and makes it available to the public in a variety of ways, including research opportunities, special programs and events. The collection documents the planning, development and continuing physical, institutional, governmental and cultural growth of the community and the life of its founder, James Rouse. Columbia Archives is open Monday through Friday, from 9am-5pm, and welcomes visitors whether they are interested in accessing photographs, articles, maps, housing brochures or telephone books for a glance through history or delving deeper into the documents for detailed research and study. Appointments are encouraged. The helpful staff is ready to assist you in helping to know your community better! Throughout the year, Columbia Archives hosts special events that are fun for all ages. • BikeAbout: The free, self-paced bike ride through Columbia is offered annually. The route is designed to highlight the history of the area and offer new ways to navigate the path system. • WalkAlong: Occasional guided walking tours offer an opportunity to explore parts of

International Exchange and Multicultural Programs

Explore and learn about the world in your own backyard! The mission of CA’s International Exchange and Multicultural Programs is to foster international understanding and to celebrate the diverse cultures of Columbia/Howard County.

See the World with CA’s International Exchanges Experience a different culture and travel abroad! The International Exchange Program offers exchange opportunities for Columbia and Howard County residents with Columbia’s sister cities: Cergy-Pontoise, France; Tres Cantos, Spain; Tema, Ghana and Cap-Haitien, Haiti. Travel for one- or two- week trips organized by CA’s program manager for international exchanges based on community desires. Travel abroad and/or become a host for visitors from one of our sister cities. Youth exchanges are organized every summer for high school students. Occasional exchanges for adults have been organized for cuisine, art and music. The cost includes a program fee plus airfare. Multicultural Events

Culture Fests and other multicultural events are planned throughout the year for the entire community where residents of all ages can share their cultures, discover the diversity of Columbia, and promote international and cultural understanding. CA International Book Club

CA’s International Book Club explores multicultural and international themes in literature on the second Wednesday of the month at 7:30pm at CA Headquarters. All books are selected by International Book Club members and are in English. Through a partnership with Howard County Library, book selections are reserved each month at the Howard County East Columbia Branch Library. The book club is free and open to the public. World Languages Café CA’s monthly World Languages Café is a place to speak a language you know or practice one you are learning. World Language Cafés are held on the fourth Tuesday of the month, year-round, from 7-9pm at the 50+ Center of the East Columbia Library (6600 Cradlerock Way, Columbia). Come and join the language table of your choice. You can converse in a friendly atmosphere, meet new people who enjoy

learning about other cultures, increase your fluency by speaking and listening, pick up useful phrases to use when traveling and recall your childhood language. Languages include American Sign Language, Arabic, Chinese, Dutch, English, Farsi, French, German, Hebrew, Hindi, Irish Gaelic, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Turkish and Urdu. Language tables are hosted by a native or fluent speaker who facilitates conversation. Children under the age of 13 should be accompanied by an adult. Tea, coffee and water are available; vending machines with snacks are inside the library. People are welcome to bring in food and beverages and may share treats from their culture with their language table. Columbia Matters

Learn more about Columbia and CA with Columbia Matters! “Columbia Matters” is CA’s Telly Award-winning monthly television program that takes viewers on a journey through Columbia and Howard County and provides entertaining and resourceful information about local events and programs. Each month “Columbia Matters” takes an inside look at major projects, initiatives and events happening in Columbia. Columbia Community Exchange

Columbia Community Exchange is Howard County’s time banking program, which provides an opportunity for neighbors to help neighbors through the mutual exchange of everyday services. Membership is free and open to all who live or work in Howard County. Using Time Dollars as an exchange instead of money allows a member to earn a Time Dollar for every hour of service provided to a fellow member. Then you have a Time Dollar to get services from any member in the network. This concept weaves stronger communities, forges friendships and strengthens the daily fabric of life. International and Multicultural Advisory Committee (IMAC) The International and Multicultural Advisory Committee (IMAC) is the umbrella committee for the sister cities committees: • Cergy-Pontoise (France) Sister City Committee • Tres Cantos (Spain) Sister City Committee • Tema (Ghana) Sister City Committee • Cap-Haitien (Haiti) Sister City Committee • China Sister City Planning Committee (Liyang, Jiangsu Province) CA’s International and Multicultural Advisory Committee and the five sister city committees advise the program manager and develop ideas for programs and exchanges. Members assist with sister cities exchanges and also help plan and volunteer at multicultural events. The advisory committees are composed of residents who represent the diversity of Columbia and who wish to help develop new programs to promote international and cultural understanding throughout the community. People with overseas travel and work experience, as well as people representing other cultures, are encouraged to attend. New members are welcome. IMAC meets every other month in the evening; sister city committees meet monthly or bimonthly. CA offers a variety of memberships to both Columbia residents and nonresidents. Income-qualified and senior discounts are also available to CA residents. Columbia Card

The Columbia Card allows Columbia residents who do not have a CA membership to pay as you go for occasional visits to CA’s facilities and pools. The Columbia Card is free and is reserved for residents who live on CA-assessed property. To obtain a Columbia Card, please visit CA’s Customer and Member Service Center at 6310 Hillside Court. Columbia Optimal Health

This eight-week program was designed by physicians, psychologists, registered dietitians and fitness professionals. The program focuses on nutrition education, exercise and lifestyle changes with a special emphasis on weight loss and reshaping your body for optimal health. CA members and non-members are welcome to participate with doctor approval. Participants have been able to decrease or stop medications, slow down the progression of diabetes, lose weight, lose inches, gain strength and stamina and have less stress on their joints. When If Not Now (WINN)

Designed for adults 50 and older, WINN is an eight-week program that provides special coaching, information, personal attention, physical exercise and fun. WINN participants receive eight weeks of CA membership. You are also assigned a personal coach who will help design a personalized program from many of CA’s ongoing activities, including group fitness classes, Yoga, Ai Chi and Aqua Arthritis in the hot water therapy pool and more. Fitness Classes

CA offers a large variety of weekly group fitness classes for all ages and fitness levels! While many of the classes are ongoing throughout the year, some are offered as six-week sessions. • Six Class Pass: For non-members, ages 65+. See ad at the back of the booklet for more information. • Basic Aerobics: Varying intensity, lowimpact aerobics and muscle conditioning. • BodyVive®: Low-impact workout at various intensities, plus strengthening, balance and core exercises. • LaBlast Fitness®: Learn a variety of basic ballroom and Latin dances in this beginning level class. No partner necessary. (45 minutes) • Joints in Motion: Gentle exercises to increase mobility, balance and endurance. • QiGong: A less complex form of tai chi. Great for beginners! • Tai Chi: Ancient Chinese discipline that tones muscles and relaxes nerves without overtaxing heart or joints. • Build Your Bones: Strength training, balance work and core exercises to benefit the health and safety of your bones. Get fitness results faster with effective, challenging, safe and fun training sessions! CA provides two levels of personal trainers: elite and professional. Session packages and small group training are also available, allowing you to choose which option best fits your needs and budget. You don’t have to live in Columbia or be a CA member to take advantage of CA’s personal training and group training offerings! Golf

Memberships available for both Hobbit’s Glen and Fairway Hills golf clubs. Fairway Hills is also open for daily play to the public, with no membership required. Driving Ranges and Practice Greens You don’t have to be a member to use the driving ranges and practice greens at Hobbit’s Glen or Fairway Hills. Hobbit’s Glen features 24 driving tees, two lesson tees and two practice greens for chipping, sand shots and putting. Fairway Hills features 23 range tees, a putting green and practice sand trap. Swimming

Columbia Swim Center Located in the Wilde Lake Village Center, Columbia Swim Center features a large wading pool, a five-lane, 25-yard program pool, a six-lane, 25-yard main pool, the recently refurbished SplashDown and a sauna. Indoor Senior Swim Held on a weekly basis, Monday through Friday from 2-3pm, Indoor Senior Swim is open exclusively to Columbia residents ages 50 and older for one hour of lap or recreational swimming at Columbia Swim Center. Enjoy swimming in warm water temperatures. Handicapped lift and elevator are available. Swimming Lessons CA offers both group and individual swimming lessons for adults and are held in six-week sessions. Adult group lessons are held in 30-minute classes and are designed for the true beginner, as well as the adult who wishes to improve stroke technique. Private swim training is also available as 30-minute one-on-one lessons. Private lessons are designed for adult triathletes, fitness swimmers and beginners. • Aqua Arthritis: Gentle exercises in warm water with the guidance of a trained instructor. Haven on the Lake

Haven on the Lake, a partnership of CA and The Still Point, is a 27,000 square foot retreat right in the heart of Columbia, designed to stimulate your well-being and vitality through restorative and health-enhancing experiences. Haven on the Lake features mind body movement classes, a movement and relaxation pool and spa as well as healing environments, including a steam bath and tropical shower. Get to Know Your Neighbors and Community Lakefront Summer Festival

Columbia Association’s Lakefront Summer Festival provides free quality family entertainment at the Downtown Columbia Lakefront throughout the summer, beginning in mid-June and continuing through mid-September. • Concerts are held mid-June through midAugust on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays at 8pm and Sundays at 6:30pm. • Movies are shown on an outdoor screen on Mondays and Fridays at dusk from midJune through mid-August and on Fridays and Saturdays at dusk from mid-August through mid-September. • Dancin’ Under the People Tree, every Friday from 6:30-8pm from mid-June through mid-September. Lakefront Lunchtime Concerts

Grab your picnic baskets or enjoy a delicious lunch at Clyde’s or Tomato Palace and enjoy a free concert at the Downtown Columbia Lakefront once a week from noon-2pm in the summer. Dog Day Afternoon

Bring your dog(s) to the very popular annual event, usually held in May. Visit with pet-friendly vendors, participate in contests such as “Best Kisser” and “Best Costume,” and let your dog play with their friends in one of two enclosed areas. Senior Events Shuttle

Free small group curb-to-curb evening (after 4:30pm) and weekend transportation shuttle to cultural events throughout Howard County for groups of four or more seniors ages 60 and over. To request or cancel a ride, please call 410-715-3087 at least two weeks before the ride is needed.

Fun for Kids and Grandkids Summer Camps

CA has more than a dozen different camps for campers 31/2 -17 years of age across Howard County. CA’s summer camps are certified and regulated by the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and the American Camp Association. There are oneand two-week sessions to choose from, plus extended camp programs for anyone who needs a longer day at camp. Before and After School Child Care

CA’s School Age Services Before and After School Care offers elementary and middle school students a safe and secure place where they can explore, learn and have fun. Programs are held in various elementary and middle schools in Columbia. In addition, School’s Closed programs are offered on most days when Howard County public schools are closed all day. Children do not need to be registered in the Before and After School Care program to register for School’s Closed programs. Columbia YouthFit

Endorsed by the American Academy of Pediatrics, this eight-week program was designed by pediatricians, child psychologists, a registered dietitian and child fitness experts. The program focuses on creating healthy

KidSpace

KidSpace is a drop-in child care program for children ages 6 weeks to 13 years of age at Columbia Athletic Club, Columbia Gym, Haven on the Lake and Supreme Sports Club. Child care is provided while parents use the facilities. KidSpace also offers classes, birthday parties and special events throughout the year that are open to both CA members and non-members for a nominal fee. Youth and Teen Center at The Barn

Hanging out at the Youth and Teen Center (YTC) at The Barn is a fun, safe way for teens and preteens to socialize and participate in recreational and educational programs. Columbia and Howard County kids 9-18 years of age are welcome year-round for after-school, summer-time and some weekend activities and programs that are designed to promote self-esteem and develop life skills. The YTC is a multi-purpose, twostory facility in the Oakland Mills Village Center, where kids can access a computer lab; watch movies or play Xbox and/or Wii on a 43-inch flat screen TV; enjoy billiard tables, foosball and air hockey; or play basketball, volleyball and other games in the mini-gym and snack bar area upstairs. SplashDown

Newly renovated, SplashDown offers families and visiting guests two thrilling body slides in addition to the rope swing, diving board, snack bar and recreational swimming. Columbia SportsPark

Columbia SportsPark, located near the Harper’s Choice Village Center, is open to the general public and features an 18-hole mini-golf course, 10 batting cages with softball and hardball at different speeds, two 600-square foot pavilions for parties or large gatherings, a clubhouse with a snack bar and video games, a patio and an outdoor playground in a beautiful and natural setting. Community Emergency Response Network (CERN)

Granted $10,000 for community awareness of emergency preparedness.

Columbia Festival of the Arts 4th of July Celebration Contributed $105,000

organized by the Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks

Granted $6,500 In addition to financial support, CA also provides the venue and significant in-kind support for both of the above events.

The Community Foundation of Howard County

Granted $100,000 in support of its mission to inspire lifelong giving and connect people, places and organizations to worthy causes across Howard County.

Neighbor Ride

Granted $10,000 to aid in its efforts to provide supplemental transportation of seniors.

Granted $25,000 to senior village.

The Community Ecology Institute Contributed $10,000 to help support their mission to foster social and ecological health and well-being.
