THE BRASFIELD

AND

GORRIE STUDENT DESIGN/CONSTRUCTION COMPETITION

IS AN ONGOING, CAREFULLY

ORCHESTRATED EFFORT TO ENCOURAGE AND PROMOTE ARCHITECTURE, BUILDING CONSTRUCTION, AND INTERIOR DESIGN STUDENTS AND FACULTY TO COLLABORATIVELY ADDRESS ISSUES RELATED TO INTEGRATED PRACTICE WITHIN A STUDIO SETTING.

THE

LEADERSHIP AT

BRASFIELD

AND

GORRIE GENERAL CONTRACTORS, HAVING

ACKNOWLEDGED THAT THE

PROCESS OF DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF BUILDINGS IS RADICALLY CHANGING, HAS BECOME ACTIVELY

ARCHITECTURE, ART, AND DESIGN AT MISSISSIPPI STATE UNIVERSITY SHIFTS TOWARD INTEGRATED PRACTICE AND EVOLVING DESIGN DELIVERY SOLUTIONS ARE AFFECTING ARCHITECTS, DESIGNERS, AND CONSTRUCTORS; AND AS EDUCATORS, WE ARE PRIVILEGED TO HELP DEVELOP THE INDIVIDUALS THAT WILL EMBODY THESE CHANGES. WE HAVE THE IMPERATIVE TO PREPARE STUDENTS TO TAKE ON THIS CRITICAL COLLABORATIVE ROLE SUCCESSFULLY. IN THAT VEIN, BRASFIELD AND GORRIE HAS MADE A FIVE-YEAR COMMITMENT TO FUND A COLLABORATIVE COMPETITION MADE UP OF TEAMS OF ARCHITECTURE, INTERIOR DESIGN, AND BUILDING CONSTRUCTION STUDENTS. FACULTY MEMBERS FROM EACH OF THE THREE DISCIPLINES TEAM-TEACH THROUGHOUT THE COMPETITION. THE STUDENT ENGAGED IN ASSISTING THE

COLLEGE

OF

TO RESPOND TO THESE IMPORTANT ISSUES.

TEAMS ALL WORK ON THE SAME PROJECT AND A PANEL OF INDUSTRY PROFESSIONALS AND FACULTY FROM THE THREE DISCIPLINES REVIEW THE RESULTANT BUILDING DESIGN, CONSTRUCTION COST ESTIMATE, AND SCHEDULE. BRASFIELD AND GORRIE FUNDS THE OPERATION OF THE STUDIO, FIELD TRIPS, AND CASH AWARDS TO THE TOP WINNING TEAMS AS SELECTED BY THE JURY PANEL.

MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN BRASFIELD AND GORRIE GENERAL CONTRACTORS...HAS BECOME ACTIVELY ENGAGED IN ASSISTING THE COLLEGE OF ARCHITECTURE, ART AND DESIGN.

BRASFIELD & GORRIE STUDENT COMPETITION_CAAD_ MCCARTHY EXPANSION_ FALL 2013

THERE

ARE SEVERAL MAJOR BENEFITS THAT ACCRUE TO THE STUDENTS INVOLVED IN THIS COLLABORATIVE

PROJECT. IT PROVIDES AN OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN TECHNICAL AND SOCIAL SKILLS REQUIRED TO SUCCESSFULLY WORK COLLABORATIVELY. THE STUDENTS GAIN FIRST HAND EXPERIENCE WORKING WITH THE COHORTS OUTSIDE OF THEIR OWN PROFESSIONAL DISCIPLINE WITH THE FOCUS BEING ‘DELIVERY’. THE PROJECT SCOPE HELPS DEVELOP STUDENTS’ UNDERSTANDING OF THEIR PROFESSIONAL ROLE IN THE DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION PROCESS, AS WELL AS AN AWARENESS OF WHAT OTHER PROFESSIONALS VALUE AND HOW THEY WORK. FINALLY, THE PROJECTS EXPOSE STUDENTS TO THE SIGNIFICANT SCOPE, IMPORTANCE, AND USE OF THE TECHNOLOGY NECESSARY TO SUPPORT THIS TYPE OF INTEGRATED PROJECT DELIVERY.

ONE

FINAL BENEFIT ACCRUES TO THE FACULTY. THIS LONG-TERM COLLABORATIVE PLANNING AND STUDIO

INSTRUCTION EFFORT HAS INCREASED THE KNOWLEDGE AND APPLICATION SKILLS OF THE FACULTY NECESSARY TO TEACH OUR STUDENTS HOW TO ACTUALLY COLLABORATE EFFECTIVELY. AS FACULTY HAVE WORKED TOGETHER TO TEACH COLLABORATIVE SKILLS TO THE STUDENTS AND DEMONSTRATED THE FRUITS OF THEIR APPLICATION THROUGH THE REFINEMENT OF THE COMPETITION PROJECTS, THEY HAVE APTLY DEMONSTRATED THE BENEFIT OF TRUE COLLABORATION. THE COLLEGE OF ARCHITECTURE, ART, AND DESIGN IS PLEASED TO PARTNER WITH BRASFIELD AND GORRIE GENERAL CONTRACTORS TO PROVIDE OUR STUDENTS AND FACULTY WITH THIS IMPORTANT LEARNING OPPORTUNITY.

DESIGN GUIDE

DETAILING THE EXTENTS OF THE MCCARTHY PROJECT

STUDENTS MUST TRANSFORM THE 1800 SQUARE-FOOT AREA BENEATH THE CONCRETE BLEACHERS ON THE WEST SIDE OF MISSISSIPPI STATE UNIVERSITY’S MCCARTHY GYM FROM AN INTERIOR EXIT INTO AN INTERIOR (CONDITIONED) MAIN ENTRANCE.. EACH TEAM MUST: ACCOMMODATE AN OCCUPANCY OF 308 PEOPLE. DESIGN HARD LANDSCAPING. PROVIDE CLEAR AND SAFE ACCESS TO THE AGRICULTURAL AND BIOLOGICAL ENGINEERING BUILDING AT ALL TIMES BOTH DURING AND AFTER CONSTRUCTION. ENSURE THAT ALL CONSTRUCTION AND FEES TOTAL NO MORE THAN $360,000 ($200/SF), INCLUDING LANDSCAPING, 15% PROFIT, AND A 7% DESIGN FEE. THE CLIENT, MISSISSIPPI STATE UNIVERSITY, EXPRESSED AN INITIAL IDEA OF SIMPLY ENCLOSING THE WEST FAÇADE OF MCCARTHY GYM, INCLUDING A HANDICAPPED RAMP (EITHER INSIDE OR OUTSIDE), AND TRANSFORMING WHAT APPEARS TO BE THE BACKSIDE OF A BUILDING INTO A PUBLIC ENTRANCE TO THE INDOOR TENNIS COURTS. THE RFP STATES THAT DESIGN PROFESSIONALS SHOULD: REMOVE THE EXISTING FIBERGLASS CORRUGATED PANELS, CHANGE EXISTING EXIT DOORS INTO CASED OPENINGS FOR ACCESS TO INDOOR SEATING. DESIGN AND CONSTRUCT AN EXTERIOR WALL IN LINE WITH THE OUTER FACE OF THE CONCRETE COLUMNS (ALTERNATIVE LOCATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED IF DESIGN FALLS WITHIN BUDGET).

INCORPORATE APPROPRIATELY SIZED DUCT WORK FOR THE PROPOSED INTERIOR VOLUME. PROVIDE THE INTERIOR AREA WITH AN AUTOMATIC SPRINKLER SYSTEM AND APPROPRIATE FIRE-RATED CONSTRUCTION AND MATERIALS. ILLUSTRATE HOW THE DESIGN EXCEEDS IBC ENERGY CODE REQUIREMENTS FOR ENERGY CONSUMPTION AND PROVIDES A HIGHER STANDARD FOR INDOOR ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY, EXCEED SIMPLE COMPLIANCE WITH 2012 IBC CODES FOR A-4 ASSEMBLY OCCUPANCY AND ADJACENCIES TO NEIGHBORING BUILDINGS. RESPECT THE INDOOR TENNIS SCHEDULE, BOTH MEN’S AND WOMEN’S.

PART OF THE CHALLENGE IS FOR EACH TEAM TO DEVISE A METHOD OF TEAMWORK THAT ALLOWS ALL THREE

DISCIPLINES TO CONTRIBUTE EFFECTIVELY WHILE EACH TEAM MEMBER UPHOLDS THE STANDARDS OF HIS OR HER OWN DISCIPLINE. HAVE WORK READY FOR CRITIQUE AT

1:00 EACH STUDIO DAY. PROFESSORS WILL EVALUATE DAILY

WORK BASED ON:

DEPTH AND BREADTH OF INQUIRY—STEADY, SOLID, + INSPIRED PROGRESS TOWARD A FINAL DESIGN CLEAR CONCEPTUAL UNDERPINNINGS TO DESIGN STRATEGIES

EFFECTIVE TEAM METHODS WITH EVIDENCE OF INTERDISCIPLINARY LEARNING AND NEGOTIATION EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION OF PROPOSALS, BOTH VERBAL AND VISUAL

SITE ANALYSIS AS PART OF THE PROJECT, EACH TEAM WILL ANALYZE THE SITE AND CONTEXT, INCLUDING BUILDING CODES, ADA AND EGRESS REQUIREMENTS, MOVEMENT AND TRANSPORTATION PATTERNS, SITE AMENITIES AND CHALLENGES, EXISTING BUILDINGS AND ARCHITECTURAL LANGUAGE, SUN ANGLES, RAINFALL AND SITE DRAINAGE, TEMPERATURE AND HUMIDITY PATTERNS, AND PROPOSED USE—USING ANALYTICAL DRAWINGS AND MODELS SUCH AS FIGUREGROUND STUDIES, SITE SECTIONS, ELEVATION STUDIES, DIAGRAMS, ANNOTATED PHOTOGRAPHS, AND OTHER VEHICLES AS NEEDED.
