Legal Aid Justice Center’s Abigail Turner Receives Award The Virginia State Bar’s Access to Legal Services Committee announced that Abigail Turner, Litigation Director at the Legal Aid Justice Center in Charlottesville, has been selected as recipient of the 2012 Virginia Legal Aid Award. The award was created to recognize innovation and creativity in advocacy, experience and excellence in service, and impact above and beyond the recipient’s service area. “Abigail has fought for justice for nearly 40 years. This award celebrates her enormous contributions to our advocacy community and those we are privileged to serve,” said Executive Director of the Legal Aid Justice Center Alex Gulotta. Abigail Turner began her work with the Legal Aid Justice Center in 2006 as an attorney with the JustChildren program. She was named Litigation Director in August 2008. Turner is a 1966 graduate of Auburn University, earned a Master’s degree in economics from Ohio State University in 1968, and received her law degree with honors from George Washington University Law School in 1975. She practiced plaintiffs’ civil rights law with the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law and then with the Legal Services Corporation of Alabama from 1975–1989.
Turner partners with other attorneys at the Legal Aid Justice Center on legal initiatives and lawsuits. This type of collaboration allows her to teach less-experienced attorneys how to construct a lawsuit and identify appropriate legal claims, how to move negotiations to an agreement, and how to manage complex issues in the courts. All three winning films will receive a special screening at the upcoming 25th Anniversary Virginia Film Festival, scheduled to take place from November 1-4, 2012, along with one Participant Badge providing access to VFF screenings and the VFF Filmmakers and Sponsors Lounge. This new competition is the latest addition to the Festival’s acclaimed Community Outreach and Education program, which also includes the Young Filmmakers Academy, a filmmaking initiative for elementary and middle school students. t’s taken awhile, but the dreams of English settlers some 400 years ago to establish a flourishing wine industry at Jamestown, Virginia has finally come true. Virginia wines now stand up to the best in the world, with a never ceasing list of awards and accolades. Travel and Leisure magazine’s Bruce Schoenfeld proclaimed Virginia one of five up-and-coming wine regions that “should be on the must-visit list of any adventurous wine traveler.” And in The Atlanta Journal and Constitution, a reviewer wrote that “Virginia is making Cabernet Franc and Viognier wines that are world-beaters,” citing a Saveur article in which wine critic Paul Luckas named two Virginia Viogniers among the best available. Although the Jamestown settlers hoped that Virginia would become a major source of wine for the British Empire, they met with dismal failure, savaged by an unknown pest, Phylloxera, as well as diseases in a new environment. In the 18th century, Thomas Jefferson and George Washington tried to cultivate European grapes but despite their best efforts, neither had anything to show for it. However, in the 1820s, wine makers began using Native American grapes and experienced great success. By the late 1800s, they discovered that European and American vines could be grafted but circumstances delayed wide scale success in this area. It was a long wait until success was experienced on a larger scale, as the Virginia wine industry did not officially take off until the 1970s. Of particular local interest is that in 1976, the year of our Bicentennial, Gabriele Rausse was hired to grow and harvest vinifera grapes near Charlottesville. He established Barboursville Vineyards and then helped other vineyards do the same. Today, with 192 wineries and counting, only four other states in the Union have more wineries than Virginia. Jefferson’s vision has finally come true. Throughout the Commonwealth, vineyards and wineries are opening their gates to the public in celebration of their bountiful harvest. Here in Central Virginia, there are several notable wine festivals and events throughout the month of May.

Greene County Autumn Hills Vineyards Nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Autumn Hills Vineyards is about 15 miles north of Charlottesville in Stanardsville. here is a saying that the only two things inevitable in the world are death and taxes. A close runner up taking the bronze medal would have to be inflation. Inflation is defined as a general increase in prices and fall in the purchasing value of money. The Bureau of Labor Statistics tries to measure inflation with the use of the consumer price index (CPI), which is a weighted average for a basket of goods and services the average American urban consumer consumes. Many Americans can still remember the high rates of inflation of the 1970s into the early 1980s where the cost of nearly everything from groceries to gas to automobiles went up year after year at rates in excess of ten percent a year, putting a strain on the
family budget. With the current federal budget deficits and national debt level reaching new heights, there are those who predict an increase in the inflation rate. There are some steps to help protect you and your family from inflation. A dollar today is worth more than a dollar tomorrow so preserving the purchasing power of today’s dollar is important. There are investments that are considered traditional stores of value, which would include items such as gold, real estate, and stocks. Gold in recent months traded as high as $1,800 an ounce, which means a relatively small amount of gold can store a relatively large amount of value that can fit into home safes. Real estate, such as a home, is a good investment as it serves two purposes: A hedge against inflation and providing shelter to live in and call home. While the price of homes is closely correlated to interest rates, which usually move in the same direction as inflation, the benefit comes from the reduced risk exposure to rent rates. Rents will go up in an environment of high inflation, but the fixed rate mortgage on a home stays

onto consumers who will be in the best shape to preserve the purchasing power of the investment. These businesses are those whose core concentration are in commodities such as oil, grains or metals, which allow them to have pricing power even in an inflationary period. Decreasing one’s spending is another way to help weather the effects of inflation. Spending can’t be measured simply in terms of dollars, as inflation will have its hand in this. Rather it should be measured in the amount of goods or services you purchase. The number of gallons of gasoline filled into the car tank, kilowatts of power the home uses, number of nights spent in a hotel, or the meals eaten out are a measurement of one’s spending habits. Looking for ways to decrease these spending numbers can help when inflation drives up the prices. Buying a more fuel efficient or reliable car, replacing the 15 year-old electric hot water heater, taking more local trips to parks for recreation, and learning how to enjoy cooking at home will reduce the goods and services consumed. Ben Franklin once said, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” Conducting routine maintenance on the car, home and even one’s body can keep them operating in tip-top performance and efficiency. Cars can gain increased miles per gallon simply by keeping the tires properly inflated and the oil changed. A home’s heating and air ventilation systems work more efficiently by changing the air filters and having them checked out once a year by a technician. Exercising and getting a yearly physical can reduce health care expenses and by diagnosing a problem earlier when it is less costly to correct. Inf lation is a necessary evil in a modern capitalistic economy for economic growth. While it is the Federal Reserve’s mission to keep inf lation at a low stable rate, you should still be proactive to take steps to protect yourself from the negative side effects of inf lation. Before liquidating the retirement account to buy a pot of gold, be sure to speak with a financial adviser for investment advice.
