CACF Distributes Grants to Local Nonprofits The Charlottesville Area Community Foundation announced $366,400 in grants to 61 local nonprofits through the Bama Works Fund of Dave Matthews Band in CACF. This Fund supports charitable programs in the Charlottesville area with particular focus on disadvantaged youth, needs of the disabled, protection of the environment, and the arts and humanities. John Redick, President of the Charlottesville Area Community Foundation comments: “The Dave Matthews Band continues their generosity to the people of this community. Through the Bama Works Fund in CACF, established in 1998, the Band has touched and improved the lives of many in our local area. The Community Foundation is deeply grateful for the Band’s support and for the good work of the organizations, which will benefit from the gifts being announced today.”
In addition, CACF approved $285,000 in grants to eight other local nonprofits through the Community Endowment Fund, which is the Foundation’s unrestricted grantmaking program that provides support to nonprofit organizations working to improve the quality of life in the CACF service area. In the spring cycle, CACF considers proposals for grants between $10,000 and $100,000 and targeted to strategic, transformative projects in the community. CACF was pleased to be able to fully fund two of the proposals. The Boys and Girls Clubs of Central Virginia (BGCCVA) received $55,000 to increase its capacity to serve more youth at their Southwood unit by expanding the clubhouse facility there. James Pierce, Executive Director of BGCCVA expressed, “Southwood Boys & Girls Club members will thrive as a result of this vital support from the Charlottesville Area Community Foundation. As a result, the Club will double in size, thereby better serving nearly 100 young people per day after school and during the summer. Programs will expand as well—especially those involving field
trips. The Board, Staff, and Members of the Central Virginia Clubs appreciate CACF for their recognition of the Boys & Girls Club mission at Southwood through this grant of support. The Club is proud to provide kids hope and opportunity and to come through on our promise that Great Futures Start Here” The Community Investment Collaborative (CIC) received $50,000 to support a four-month entrepreneurship training program for existing and aspiring entrepreneurs, including micro financing and ongoing advisory and peer support in order to strengthen local entrepreneurship. “We are thrilled with the extraordinary generosity of CACF and by its support for this new micro lending effort in our area,” said CIC co-founder Wendy Brown. “Through wonderful collaboration with business owners, bankers, students and faculty at UVA and generous donors, CIC is bringing entrepreneurial training and future financing to a segment of our region’s population that did not previously have access to these elements. CACF’s grant is a vote of confidence in CIC’s mission and will help many in our region realize their dreams.” CIC provides training, funding and mentoring and this grant will assist in this mission. Six additional nonprofits benefitted from these grants: • Charlottesville Tomorrow received $35,000 to support its work with local media by providing indepth coverage of community issues and contributing to informed decision making. • Local Food Hub, City Schoolyard Garden received $32,000 to expand their innovative academic, health, environmental stewardship and community engagement program to the Charlottesville City
Schools in 2012-2013. • Piedmont Council of the Arts received $20,000 to support the development of a Charlottesville Area Cultural Plan through an active, collaborative process as they enable community stakeholders to prioritize and strategically respond to important needs in the area’s cultural sector. • Stream Watch received $40,000 to support the long-term monitoring in the Rivanna Watershed in collaboration with the Rivanna Conservation Society (RCS) and Rivanna River Basin Commission (RRBC). • The Women’s Initiative received $28,000 to support expansion of its Mental Health Services Program in response to the community’s need. • Virginia Supportive Housing received $25,000 to support case management and volunteer services for the 30 formerly homeless tenants of The Crossings at Fourth and Preston.

Three historic presidential homes in the area offer tours and often have special events targeting children’s interests. For example, Monticello, the home of our third president, Thomas Jefferson, offers daily hands-on tours designed for youngsters from 6-11 as well as other specialized tours. The visitor center is home to the Griffin Discovery Room where youngsters—especially those ages 6 to 12—can explore history through hands-on activities revealing the lives of children in the early 1800s. Children can write on a polygraph machine like Jefferson’s—the way he made copies of his hand-written documents—try on old-style clothing, weave, and play games popular in Jefferson’s time. Montpelier was the home of James Madison, our fourth president. The massive recent restoration back to its brick Colonial appearance from the time it was covered in pink stucco is just about complete. There is also a new visitor center plus archeological sites, hands-on activities and historic buildings. Summer has special family-friendly tours, as well as a Kids Only! tour on Fridays in July and August where youngsters cook over an open fire, use old tools and search for artifacts like archeologists. Ashlawn-Highland, the home of James Monroe—our fifth president—offers special workshops such as making candles, rope, ornaments and tin lanterns and paperquilling. Families or other groups can also opt to bring their own sleeping bags to overnight in the Conference Room
(until 10 a.m. the next day) and explore the grounds at their leisure. Camp-in minimum is 10 persons, maximum 30.
Day Trips There are many potential destinations for entertaining day trips in the region. In Nelson County, for example, the Crabtree Falls Highway—rather a misnomer, since it’s a winding scenic two-lane road—takes visitors to the spot where the Tye River creates the tallest cascading waterfall east of the Mississippi. There are a variety of hikes, little waterfalls and swimming areas, picnic tables and a campground. Nearby hikes include the Appalachian Trail with a unique swinging bridge and Spy Rock. About seven miles farther up the highway is the Montebello Fish Hatchery, which is also fun to visit. The Shenandoah Valley is home to two major cavern systems open to the public and both are excellent refuges from summer heat. Since the discovery of this largest series of caves in the East, the attraction has been expanded to include a Garden Maze with a halfmile pathway and 40 decision points as well as a Car and Carriage Museum. Glenmore’s convenient location may be part of its popularity. Like other parts of our area it suffered in the recent real estate downturn. However things are definitely looking up.
