Ash Lawn Opera Festival At The Paramount Now in its fourth season performing at the historic Paramount Theater in downtown Charlottesville, the Ash Lawn Opera Festival presents five performances of Meredith Willson’s ever-popular The Music Man in July and August. Popular local performers Dan Stern, Joe Duquette, and Pat Owen take the roles of Marcellus, Charlie, and the Mayor, along with the Dreamland Barbershop Quartet and 15 local children. Cate Caplin (L.A. Stage Alliance Ovation Award, Accolade Award) directs the production; Shon LeBlanc (Ovation and Drama Critics Circle Award) is the costume designer; and Jon Kalbfleisch (Signature Theatre, Helen Hayes Award) returns from his success conducting The King and I at Ash Lawn Opera in 2011 to conduct this summer’s musical. The principal artists are joined by 13 Young Artists (singers who have completed their graduate degrees and have embarked on careers) as well as five singers in a newly created

category of Apprentice Singer (those still in graduate programs). There were 300 applications from across the nation and those accepted boast prizes from prestigious competitions ranging from The Metropolitan Opera National Council and Regional NATS competitions, to the Armel Competition in Hungary and Concorso Cappuccilli in Italy. Over 200 musicians auditioned nationwide to play in the 2012 Ash Lawn Opera Orchestra. Participants have been selected from symphony orchestras from Florida to Tennessee, as well as several top regional players from Richmond, Roanoke, and Charlottesville. For the first time, Ash Lawn Opera took its Young Artists to the Louisa Arts Center on June 23 at 7:30 pm to perform Puccini’s delightful and touching one-act comedy, Gianni Schicchi. The Young Artists return for a second season to the Wintergreen Summer Festival with “Mozart’s Magical Mystery Tour” (scenes from Mozart operas accompanied by piano) on July 19 at 7:30. The company continues its tradition of providing free noon-time Recitals for the community with performances on July 25 and August 1 at The Haven, a church and homeless shelter near the Downtown Mall. The company also continues to provide a free lecture before every performance of The Music Man at The Paramount Theater.

Keeping Elders Cool While JABA’s annual cooling assistance program (CoolAid) went into effect June 15, it took the recent power outages to drive home just how important a working fan or AC unit can be. “Our emphasis again this summer is on helping income-eligible members of the community aged 60 and above stay comfortable without overloading their electric bills,” says Case Management Supervisor Ginger Dillard. “We will be providing primarily fans, some purchased with funds from Dominion Electric’s Fan Care program.”

The need is real for this basic cooling assistance. In the United States, each year, more people die from “excessive heat events” (where temperatures rise 10 degrees Fahrenheit or more for an extended period) than from hurricanes, lightning, tornadoes, floods, and earthquakes combined. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) advises that older adults are more vulnerable to heat related illnesses due to physical changes. Chronic diseases and prescription medications greatly add to the risk. Because early intervention can be a lifesaver, JABA urges people to check on their neighbors. Low-cost/no-cost ways recommended by the CDC for coping with the heat include: • Drink cool, nonalcoholic beverages. • Rest. • Take a cool shower, bath, or sponge bath. • If possible, seek an air-conditioned environment, Such as a shopping mall or public library, or one of JABA’s eight community centers. • Wear lightweight clothing. • If possible, remain indoors in the heat of the day. • Do not engage in strenuous activities. JABA’s 2012 cooling assistance program runs from June 15 to September 30. In certain critical instances, JABA may also be able to provide air conditioners or limited amounts of financial assistance with electrical bills in addition to fans. Perhaps that is why many of the out of town customers for these agents are what Gentry calls “come heres” from Northern Virginia. “They come from Northern Virginia looking for seclusion and privacy,” said Coffey. Many are people looking for a place to get away for the weekend, but, she said, she sees lots of retirees as well. Some buy in Madison in anticipation of retirement. However, she said for many people “it’s worth it to get out to the country.” She also has clients who commute to DC and others who have jobs at NGIC in Charlottesville. Coffey is seeing an increase in buyers who have moved away and are ready to come home again. Some are singles who miss their families and are ready to return, she said, while others are empty nesters anticipating retirement whose children have finished with school. busier now than she has been in the recent past. The homes that are selling are in the $300K and under price range. “The larger properties are taking awhile to sell,” she said, “but they do sell.” She has worked with buyers looking for large parcels suitable for horse farming and others wanting to start a camp or retreat center. Madison offers a number of important advantages to home buyers. While prices are similar to those in surrounding counties, effective tax rates are lower and according to Gentry the cost of living is stable and has not increased as much as elsewhere making Madison very attractive from an economic standpoint. Another thing that distinguishes Madison is that it has not suffered from as many foreclosures and short sales as have other parts of the state. This may be due in part to the county’s policy on development, which has prevented large scale subdivisions that bring in multiple buyers, many of whom, in times past, took advantage of adjustable rate mortgages that were difficult to maintain when the rates went up. Madison homeowners have suffered loss in value like everywhere else, with the biggest reductions being in the under $275,000 price range according to Gentry who said the other price ranges have held their value a little better. “The good news,” he added, “is that between today’s prices and interest rates less than four percent, this is probably the best time in 40 years to be a home buyer.” He is optimistic about the market and stressed that real estate continues to be a good investment.

Rural and Accessible One of the benefits of Madison County is its accessibility. Situated right on the Route 29 corridor, it is an easy drive to many popular locations. For example, Gentry described some of his favorite spots in Charlottesville such as restaurants, the Downtown Mall and the John Paul Jones Arena, saying that all of them are at most 40 minutes away. Similarly, DC is very accessible, especially on weekends. Some years ago a friend gave Gentry tickets to an event at the Kennedy Center on a Sunday afternoon. “We left our home in Madison and were seated for the show in just an hour and 45 minutes,” he said. Given its aging population, another point of interest for potential Madison residents is the availability of medical care. While Charlottesville’s hospitals are reasonably close, many medical offices such as Martha Jefferson’s facility in Forest Lakes are closer still. To the north is Culpeper, which also has a hospital and medical offices that are just 20 minutes away.

Leisure Activities for Everyone Although it is a rural laid back place, Madison still offers lots in the way of activities to keep people busy. Lillard is fond of the Bavarian Chef, a restaurant located in Madison that attracts customers from as far away as DC. She said not only is it always full, but when she goes there she rarely recognizes any of the other diners. “It is these people riding through who often decide to purchase a weekend or retirement home here,” she added. The farmer’s market is a regular event during the summer. Not only does it feature produce from local farmers and growers, but, said Gardner, “it is a place for the community to come together and enjoy some camaraderie.” In addition, she said, residents and guests can enjoy the annual Madison County fair, which she described as a “huge festival” featuring local food and businesses as well as crafts from everywhere. For people who like hiking and climbing, Madison is the home of

Old Rag Mountain, which has always been a popular and demanding hike. The parking lot for Old Rag climbers is owned by Lillard and her husband who rent it to the National Park. She said it holds 250 cars and during the hiking season it is always full with license plates from around Virginia and many other states. Often these adventurers stay at nearby Graves Mountain Lodge, another of Madison County’s popular spots, which packs lunches for hikers and picnickers to enjoy while they are out on the trail. Residents and visitors who prefer less rigorous activity can enjoy trout fishing. For those who like competition and are charitably inclined, a local organization called Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing, has an annual 2-fly tournament. Proceeds go to support the organization’s mission, which is “to assist in the physical and emotional rehabilitation of disabled active duty military personnel and veterans through fly fishing and fly tying education and outings.” Madison is also home to several wineries. Early Mountain Vineyards was recently purchased by one of the co-founders of AOL. Recently remodeled, it features a family oriented menu with picnic tables and fire pits, said Gardner. Ducard vineyards, located at the base of Old Rag, is another local winery that also has the benefit of being pet friendly. Ponds with streams and waterfalls should be installed where there is an existing change in elevation to prevent them from looking contrived. We specialize in creating naturalistic water features that are unique to each site based on the existing conditions and the atmosphere that our clients want.” While standard pond kits are available, TimberStone designs custom waterscapes. “We always piece the components together according to what elements our client is looking for,” said Hefren. “A twisting mountain stream will require different components than a rushing boulder

I hand pick most of the boulders myself for each water feature according to the type of feature and the existing site conditions, paying special attention to unique shapes and showcasing their natural moss and lichen. Depending on the existing environment, the boulders we select can weigh several tons each.” Water garden sizes range from 6’ x 6’ to 20’ x 20’, or larger. Although larger ponds are easier to establish a balanced ecosystem than smaller ponds, a pondless water feature can be just as enjoyable. “You still get a custom naturalistic feature, but without the pond and its maintenance,” Hefren added.

Maintenance is required, so homeowners should decide how much time they want to devote to their waterscape, or whether they need to contract an outside service. Ponds are typically drained and cleaned annually. Other than that, it’s as simple as cleaning the skimmer and adding the appropriate pond products at the proper time. For waterscape craftsmen who are passionate about their work, designing and building waterscapes is an exciting and fulfilling process. “We go hiking several times each year to observe how water behaves in nature, and replicate this in our designs,” said Hefren. “We encourage our clients to join us in picking out boulders and plants because it gets them involved in the project. Seeing our client observe the complete living waterscape that looks like it has been there forever is the best part of the project.”
