What’s Happening Around Town? Service Dogs of Virginia Receives Grant
The Planet Dog Foundation (PDF), Planet Dog’s non-profit grant making organization, announced the recipients of $25,000 in new grants to eight canine service organizations, including Service Dogs of Virginia. Service Dogs of Virginia raises, trains and places dogs to assist people with disabilities, including assistance dogs, autism dogs and diabetic alert dogs. The $5,000 PDF grant will help fund their dogs in various stages of training for diabetic alert. Their Executive Director sits on an international panel as a leading expert on training diabetic alert dogs. Opus, one of their diabetic alert dogs, earned Honorable Mention for the 2011 AKC Humane Fund Awards for Canine Excellence. http://www. servicedogsva.org
“Service Dogs of Virginia is thrilled to receive this incredibly generous grant from the Planet Dog Foundation,” says Stacey Lange. “This grant will be used to support the innovative training of diabetic alert dogs. A diabetic alert dog can detect when blood sugar begins to drop in a person with Type 1 diabetes, helping to prevent serous health consequences, even death. Service Dogs of Virginia is one of the few organizations in the country training diabetic alert dogs and we couldn’t do it without the support of caring individuals and
foundations like Planet Dog,” adds Lange.
Piedmont Casa Expanding Summer is proving to be a busy one for Piedmont Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), with the addition of three new staff members: Kate Fritz and Lindsay Jackson joined the team as CASA Supervisors, and Vicki Simons joined as Associate Advancement Director, working directly with Rachel Lloyd Miller. Kate just earned her Master’s degree in Social Services Administration from the University of Chicago. Her experience includes immigration advocacy, substance abuse counseling and positive life planning, community outreach, and volunteer coordination. Lindsay has an extensive background in social services, having served most recently as Program Manager at the Up Center in Norfolk, Virginia. Specifically, she has experience in transitional employment, parenting, youth mentoring, and child abuse prevention/parent education. Vicki brings a wealth of experience in communications, public relations, and development/advancement, having served at PVCC, as well as at UVa in public relations and development respectively. Vicki also publishes regularly in Doxie Digest, a national print magazine based in Carlsbad, California. In related action, Hope Payne, who has served as a CASA Supervisor since August 2008, was promoted to Program Director. In that capacity she will oversee the work of all CASA Supervisors. Hope’s background includes 12 years of experience in the practice of Family Law. Piedmont Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), Inc. provides trained volunteers to advocate for the best interests of abused and neglected children, promoting and supporting safe, permanent, and nurturing homes for child victims before the courts of the 16th Judicial District of Virginia.
New Dance Company concordance contemporary designed their upcoming Premiere Dance Series to give audiences an emotionally stirring, rich, sensual, textural whirlwind experience that shifts its perspective. “I want to give
the audience the feeling of childlike freedom that makes anything and everything possible,” said Veronica, the founder and company director of concorDance contemporary (cDc), a new seasonal contemporary ballet company. cDc is a division of Studio For The Performing Arts (SFTPA), a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization based out of Albemarle Ballet Theatre (ABT) in Crozet, VA. cDc’s professional dancers perform the original creations of four choreographers August 9th through the 11th. Choreographer Ryan Beck is traveling from San Diego to deliver Conversations on Olympus, an ensemble piece accompanied by the music of Sigur Rós, overlaid with dialogue. Mr. Beck is co-director of Garage Contemporary Ballet in San Diego California. Veronica Hart’s Dream Suite is inspired by a selection of poems by Langston Hughes. Elisa Alexander and Ty Cooper will be presenting exciting new dance pieces. These dance creations are set to an expanse of music. Elisa Alexander, Audrey Fenske, Veronica Hart, Caitlin Lennon, Moira Price, and Devin Sweet perform with Charlottesville Ballet during the regular season. Dinah Gray currently performs and choreographs locally. Ms. Gray is an instructor and choreographer for ABT. They are all seasoned professionals who have trained and danced with companies and schools including American Ballet Theatre, Ballet Theatre of Maryland, Richmond Ballet, The Juilliard School, and San Diego Ballet. The majority of professional dance companies perform seasonally from September through May. cDc fills this gap by giving dancers and choreographers a place to do what they love doing for the audience; create and dance! cDc’s mission is to develop a closer relationship between the audience and
the artists. “By embracing on each company member’s uniqueness and accentuating everyone’s individuality, our creations will be unlike anything else,” said Veronica. Veronica Hart is a Charlottesville Ballet dancer and co-artistic director for ABT whose professional dance career began in 2003. Other companies Veronica danced for include Charleston Ballet Theatre, San Diego Ballet, and The Garage Contemporary Ballet. Ms. Hart helped open ABT in 2004 with plans to create her own dance company. Veronica has helped produce successful shows and original works set in a variety of dance genres. Executive Director Gary Hart brings 40 years of experience to lead business planning, financial management, marketing, and public relations. He also does the same for ABT and SFTPA. Gary is currently managing a Kickstarter campaign to help fund this first series. cDc’s first show is Thursday, August 9th, 7pm at Albemarle Ballet Theatre. Ticket prices are $10 for adults and $8 for children, students, and seniors. Friday, August 10th. cDc performs two shows at the Dickinson Black Box Theater at 7pm & 8pm. Ticket prices are $15 for adults and $10 for children, students, and seniors. Saturday, August 11th, they perform outdoors at Pollak Vineyards with a Blue Ridge Mountain backdrop. Richmond residents for many years, he and his wife retired to Nelson County. “Not only does it bring tourism dollars to Nelson County, it also helps people connect with the beauty of this place.” The RVF has recently opened their new Natural History Center Spruce Creek Park just south of Nellysford on route 151 which provides an interesting introduction to the region. “Nelson is a place where time spent outdoors is as much rewarded as is time spent at Nelson 151 venues,” Agelasto adds. “They go together.” Indeed, tucked up against the mountains with their hiking and skiing trails, Nelson County is ideal for both wine and beer. An AVA is an American Viticultural Area, that is, a designated wine-grape growing region with specific geographic features and boundaries. The Monticello AVA has fertile granite-based clay soil well suited for grapes.
“Of all the counties surrounding Charlottesville, Nelson County has a lot to offer,” declares Francesca San Giorgio, owner of Four Seasons Realty. “Over the last 12 years since I moved here from Santa Barbara, California, Nelson County has grown in a unique way –not with fast food and large corporate stores but with wineries, breweries and restaurants within the beauty of the mountains and valleys.” A number of those wineries and breweries have joined together in a collective dubbed Nelson 151. “We’re neighbors, not competitors,” says Elizabeth Smith, Chair of Nelson 151 and owner, with her husband Tony, of Afton Mountain Vineyards. Nelson 151 Benefits Entire County “Nelson 151 is good for business,” says Judy Stiber, a Nelson resident for more than 30 years, as she pours wine at Veritas Vineyard and Winery. “This was a horse-and-cattle farm until the Hodson family from England bought it.” Veritas has a large indoor ballroom all draped in white, which is popular for weddings and receptions. “We had about 75 weddings last year,” Stiber notes. “We also have a summer concert series, a wine dinner and a New Year’s Eve Masked Ball.” Veritas is expanding its vineyards. Afton Mountain is another winery expanding its vineyards. “This will mean hiring more people,” says owner Smith. “Right now we buy some grapes from other growers in the AVA to produce our nine varieties. We’re small and we like it that way,” she says. They have a pleasant tasting room in a stylish new building that relaxes into the scenery and have picnic tables for visitors. “We’re definitely seeing more traffic with Nelson 151,” agrees Tim Gorman of Cardinal Point Vineyards and Winery. “Nelson 151 is showing us that it’s to our advantage to be in close proximity. We all need to be wanting to make our wines better and be helpful to our visitors.” He notes that each winery is different and they are quick to recommend each other to visitors seeking something specific. Cardinal Point has 15 acres in vines and is operated with Gorman’s mother, father, sister and brother. “I planted the grapes in the mid-80s with my Dad who’s a retired Army four-star,” Gorman explains. They first sold their harvests to other wineries, but in 2007 they established Cardinal Point. His sister, Sarah Gorman, runs the business and marketing side while Tim does the growing and winemaking. “I enjoy what I do. I like making wine. I like riding my tractor.” In another county-supporting role, the members support local charities. “We are all active, as individual businesses and as the Nelson151 collective, in many local charitable works,” says Smith. She cites last year’s “12 Days of Christmas” program where each member took one day and donated all or a portion of their pro-

At least once a month, musical groups grace their small stage to present “Tins for Tunes.” Admission: cash or five cans of food for the Nelson County food bank. They also donate the stage space for a nearby local school to have performances. After growing grapes for others for many years with about 6.5 acres in vines, Rich and Lynn Davis, Nelson Country residents for more than 30 years, launched Flying Fox Vineyard—named for their fox-shaped weathervane. Set the Dial Higher
If you have central air, a thermostat set above 78 degrees can save up to eight percent on cooling costs with each degree above that mark. If you leave home for more than one hour, raise the thermostat to 85 or 90 degrees and reset it upon your return. The system will use less energy during the 15-minute cool-down period than if you had left it running at a lower setting while you were out.

Use a Fan
A fan, which costs two to five cents per hour to operate, will make a room feel four to six degrees cooler. In frequently used rooms, install a ceiling fan (set it to spin counterclockwise in summer and only run it when you’re in the room. You might want to consider purchasing a whole-house fan, which runs $300 to $600 installed. This type of unit goes in an upstairs ceiling, ideally in a central hall. When run at night with the windows open, the fan pulls cool air into the house as it vents hot air out through the attic. Whole-house fans draw only as much power as a couple of lightbulbs.

Practice “Texas Cool”
“Texas cool” is a morning and evening routine that takes advantage of cool outdoor temperatures at night and keeps the heat away as much as possible during daylight hours. When the temperature drops at night, open windows and bring in cool air with window fans or a whole-house fan. When the sun comes up or the air starts to heat, shut the windows and shades and keep doors closed.

Use Sunblockers
As much as 20 percent of summer heat enters your home through windows. Add curtains or blinds to rooms that get direct sun and draw them in daylight hours. With the shades drawn, a well-insulated house will gain only one degree per

Any appliance that generates heat adds to your cooling load. If you decide to bake some chocolate chips during the day, it can easily raise the room temperature 10 degrees, which in turn jacks up overall cooling costs two to five percent. Save cooking (especially baking) for cooler hours, or cook outdoors on your grill.

Install a Programmable Thermostat
A programmable thermostat lets you preset temperatures for different times of the day, so air-conditioning
is working only when you are home. The least-expensive thermostat models ($30) let you set four cycles that, unless manually overridden, repeat every day. Higher-priced models ($50 and up) allow you to create settings for each weekday and for each weekend day.

Get Cooler Lights
If you still have incandescent bulbs in your home, now’s the time to replace them. While they may not contribute as much heat as unshaded windows, they do add heat to a house and can raise the “perceived” temperature, causing you to lower the thermostat. To reduce this hot-light effect and save lighting costs yearround, replace incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescents. They use about 75 percent less energy and emit 90 percent less heat.

Plug the Ducts
Leaky ducts can cut into air-conditioning efficiency. Leak-prone areas include the return plenum; where branch ducts meet the trunk line; and where ducts attach to outlets. Also, insulate ducts that run through a hot attic with a blanket of R-11 fiberglass insulation. Unless the duct repairs are minor, it’s wise to leave them to a HVAC pro.

Seal Air Leaks
The places where cold air infiltrates in winter are routes for hot air in summer. Grab a flashlight, exterior-rated silicone caulk and a couple cans of expanding foam insulation and go hunting for leaks. Focus on the attic, basement and crawl space and pay close attention to anything that passes through a ceiling or wall, such as ductwork, electrical or plumbing conduits and kitchen and bath vents. Other common leaky spots are around windows and doors where you can add weather stripping.

Defeat Attic Heat
The temperature in your attic can reach 150 degrees on a hot summer day, a situation that if left unchecked can drive up cooling costs by as much as 40 percent. If your attic has less than R22 insulation—7 inches of fiberglass or rock wool, or 6 inches of cellulose—you should add more.

Blue Mountain Brewery brews about 2500 barrels (about 80,000 gallons) of handcrafted American ales each year. Visitors can see hops growing on their tall trellises, tour the brewing facilities and enjoy a snack, lunch or dinner and all their breads are made fresh daily at the Goodwin Creed Farm in nearby Afton. The brewery features daily â&#x20AC;&#x153;Happeningsâ&#x20AC;? such as a menu special, live music or $1 off all beverages. Devilâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Backbone brews several varieties with a traditional German-style copper-kettle brewing system and serves it up fresh from a dozen taps in the pub area. Their handsome stone building houses an eatery as well as the pub. This is a nice stop for families, since they also feature homemade root beer and ginger beer on tap and a special menu for youngsters.
Wild Wolf Brewing Company is a family-owned brewery and restaurant featuring its handcrafted beers. Several shops are housed in remodeled tobacco barns on the property and the menu includes vegan and glutenfree fare. Many specials and frequent live music make it a popular spot and Tuesday Trivia Nights are popular.
Preferred Partners Blue Toad Pub is an eatery with a childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s playground, lunch and dinner menus. Monthly events menus lists kids-eat-free days plus live music on Friday and Saturday nights. Hops and Vine tours are available on their tour bus. The Afton Mountain Bed and Breakfast Inn is Orquida and Dan Ingrahamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 1848 Victorian farmhouse with antiques, heart pine floors, and five guest rooms all with wi-fi and private baths. The Mark Addy Inn is a beautifully restored B&B with six porches and 12 roomsâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;some pet-friendly. The dining room is open for both breakfast and dinner for Inn guests. They also host weddings, family reunions and other special events. The Farmhouse at Veritas opened just this past spring and is an easy stroll to Veritas Winery. It was originally built in 1836 and is newly updated with six bedrooms, each room named for a county in England.

They sponsor various festivals and thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a scenic picnic area near the Rockfish River with gourmet picnic fare available for purchase. Wintergreen Winery offers both indoor and outdoor settings for weddings, receptions, special events and private functions. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Verandah at Wintergreen Wineryâ&#x20AC;? is their newly constructed event facility.
