W With Grow the Kids hen designing and decorating children’s rooms, wise h o m e ow n e r s always plan ahead to create kid-friendly designs and strategies that “grow” with the child from a nursery to a teenager’s room with space for an overnight friend and a good study area. They look even further down the road to the time the kids leave home and that room becomes an office or guest room. And they look for a way to do it that doesn’t break the bank. “It’s important to make a room look large,” declares Liz Blackenship who, with her business partner Beth Riordan, launched Stage to Sell in 2005. “The majority of clients are REALTORS®,” Blackenship says, “and we do a lot of consultations and assessments about what will create a more positive impression for potential buyers.” So how do you make a room look large? “There are two keys,” says Blankenship. “First, use light, neutral wall colors and second, keep as much floor space clear as possible.” Light-colored walls are easy and can be accented with accessories to change appearances, but how in the world do you keep a tidy floor with kids? “Kids come with lots of things, whether babies, toddlers or high schoolers,” concedes Amy Smith,

owner of Organized Designs in Charlottesville. Her company specializes in “interior redesign” that aims at reusing and repurposing items that people already have in their homes. “Storage is the key,” she declares. “It’s ideal to find storage that works all the way through those years.”
She recommends closet organizers and cubicle shelving since both can be augmented and rearranged over time. “Do a combination of closed and open storage that is functional,” she suggests. For example, shelves that were open for young children can be fitted with cupboard doors or
bright baskets in place of drawers as the youngsters grow. Hammock-like netting hung in corners can be home to pre-schoolers’ stuffed animals and big baskets can corral miscellaneous toys, keeping floors clear. A shelf installed a foot below the ceiling all around the room can also provide perches for stuffed animals, collections or other seldom-used items and takes up no floor space at all. Stacked furniture can also be functional. Bunk beds are a classic floor-space saver, of course. Older children usually love loft beds, which can be DIY or purchased. The area below can be used for closed storage, shelving, a desk or a trundle bed for overnights with friends.
Rooms That Grow With The Kids “Color is always easy to change,” Smith points out. For very young children, using “chalkboard” paint means they can draw on the walls as much as they want and magnetic boards are also inviting. And maintaining light, neutral walls doesn’t mean the room will be dull. Stick-and-peel wall decals from Tinkerbell to Star Wars and even full-wall murals are also easily changeable according to the youngsters’ changing interests. A new coat of paint, a new bedcovering and more grown-up window treatments can make a world of difference between a nursery, a room for preteens or a highschooler’s lair.

Something as minor as new lighting or changing drawer pulls on a chest can also help a room feel more “grown-up.” In a small room, painting furniture the same color as the walls makes the room feel bigger and mirrors also “expand” a room. By the time children are in high school, they have often developed their own sense of style and color and may want to have input. This is a good time to hand the kids a brush and some pointers on painting. For example, a very dark wall may take several coats to cover with a new color, but it can be done. Painting one wall with an accent color can make a dramatic difference. Rugs also make a major statement. For toddlers, Smith recommends a large area rug with thick padding, since they often play in their rooms. Older children may want select scatter rugs in their favorite colors or some amusing shape. If children must share a room, consider dividing it with well-anchored floor-to-ceiling bookshelves—either open or with backings making some shelves open to each side—to offer a degree of privacy. Another tactic is to affix a “hospital track” to the ceiling for floor-length curtains that can be either open or closed.
