Music: A Festival of Chamber Music in Staunton
I
By Ken WiLson t wasn’t so long ago that Staunton was a quiet Shenandoah Valley community best known for a fine women’s college and a quaint little downtown with narrow, hilly streets and late 19th century red-brick buildings. That was
before a faithful recreation of Shakespeare’s Blackfriars Theatre opened in 2001 and the renovated Stonewall Jackson Hotel and Conference Center reopened in 2005. Just this year, Smithsonian and Travel Leisure magazines hailed the place for its small city vigor and charm and the National Trust for Historic Preservation gave it a Great American Main Street Award.
Staunton today is a lively city, proud of its eclectic architecture, its burgeoning restaurant scene, and its world class Shakespearean theater where they “do it with the lights on.” Come every summer it welcomes acclaimed musicians from as far off as Paris, Vienna and Helsinki for another of its choice cultural offerings, the annual Staunton Music Festival’s Summer Sounds series, August 17-25. The main event by an organization that will present two more concerts in September and November, the Summer Sounds series concentrates mostly on chamber music, the quieter, more intimate variant of symphonic music. First written to be heard in luxurious private homes, chamber music is played without a conductor by groups of two to eight musicians. Because only one player generally plays each part in a chamber music score, every player’s role is important, and every player can be clearly heard. One of the joys of attending chamber music performances is to see and hear the interaction between individual musicians. Harpsichord, piano, fortepiano, flute, horn, oboe, recorder, violin, cello, theorbo (a 16th century Florentine variation on the lute) and even electronics will all be

heard this August, and each of the festival’s seven evening concerts will be preceded by a free talk to help novices and aficionados alike better understand and appreciate the music. Dedicated to “preserving the art and tradition of classical music,” the Staunton festival has grown from just two concerts in 1998 to eighteen separate events this year, including ten free master classes, concerts and lecture-demonstrations. For this, the 15th summer festival, more than 50 musicians, composers and performers will perform vocal, choral and instrumental work from the 18th through the 21st centuries. Artistic director Carsten Schmidt holds a doctorate from Yale, teaches music history at New York City’s Sarah Lawrence College, and enjoys an international career as a conductor, pianist and harpsichordist. He founded the festival while living in Staunton and teaching at Mary Baldwin College. That first year, “it was just Carsten and three or four other friends of his,” remembers Jason Stell,

This summer’s events begin Friday, August 17 with a gala at the President’s House at Mary Baldwin College that includes dinner and drinks followed by musical selections for two violins, for harpsichord, and for clarinet quintet. But most performances will take place downtown at Trinity Episcopal, a stately structure dating to the mid-1850s with no less than 12 stained glass Tiffany windows. Last year a temporary stage was built inside the church, extending out from the altar, giving the performers more room, bringing them eight feet closer to the audience, and improving the acoustics. The stage will be reinstalled for the 2012 summer concerts. The Austrian Fantasies program on Saturday, August 18 will feature seven compositions by five composers, ranging from light-hearted

bergian severity with gorgeous, rippling melody. Meet the SMF Early Keyboard Family on the afternoon of Sunday the 19th will introduce the festival’s prized early keyboards instruments in talks and demonstrations by Schmidt and musicians Lou Dolive, David Schrader, and Mark Shuldiner. Mixed Doubles that evening will open with a stately concerto by C.P.E. Bach (second son of Johann), then jump centuries and aesthetic universes to a composition for two pianos and electronics by 20th century Dutch composer Ton Bruynel. A romantic work by Robert Schumann and a classical one by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart will soothe the unsettled and quiet the querulous. The B.A.C.H. program on Monday, August 20 is one of two 2012 installments in an ongoing, eight-year long festival project to play all the keyboard music of Johann Sebastian Bach. Interspersed with the Bach will be works based on his compositions by 19th century German Schumann, the 20th century Frenchman Francis Poulenc, and two contemporary composers, the Estonian Arvo Pärt and the Russian Sofiya Gubaydulina. Organist David Schrader will play more J.S. Bach during the free Tuesday noon organ recital, along with
his own music and work by Praetorius (16th-17th century), Hindemith (20th century). Rule Britannia on Wednesday the 22nd will be a mostly 20th century British affair with works by Ralph Vaughan Williams, Benjamin Britten, Edward Elgar, and Peter Maxwell Davies. Rounding out the program will be selections by the 18th century German-born British subject George Friderich Handel, the late 18th-early 19th century German-born German Ludwig van Beethoven, and the 20th
century American-born American Leo Orstein. Folk/Art on Thursday the 23rd will offer seven examples of classical music’s penchant for transforming pop music into high art. The second movement of Franz Joseph Haydn’s Symphony No. 85, “La Reine” (the Queen), a favorite of Marie Antoinette’s, consists of variations on the old French folk-song. Edvard Grieg’s “Holberg Suite” is based on eighteenth century dance forms. Lou Harrison’s “Varied Trio” is a 1987
work for rice bowls, violin, and piano. The late avant-garde Argentinian tango composer Astor Piazolla will be represented by the Winter and Spring movements of his piano trio “Four Seasons of Buenos Aires” for violin, cello and piano. Baroque Inside/Out on Friday the 24th will showcase the festival’s early keyboard instruments with a complete performance of Antonio Vivaldi’s masterwork, the ‘Four Seasons” violin concerto. Vocal and instrumental music will follow by fellow Italians

Claudio Monteverdi and Pietro Locatelli as well as the German Johann Jakob Froberger and the formerly German Handel. Madrigal singers will entertain during intermission. The 2012 festival’s final offering, Versailles at the Blackfriars on Saturday the 25th, will be dedicated to the splendor of the French Baroque, with chamber and vocal selections and a small orchestra performance by the Staunton Music Festival Baroque Players. Featured composers include Rameau, Lully, Charpentier, LeClair, Marais and the Couperins. More than just a feast for the audience, the Staunton Music Festival gives participants a chance to hone their skills through its Young Artists and Emerging Composers programs. Now in its sixth year, the Young Artists Program gives recent conservatory graduates and current students a chance to play alongside seasoned professionals and receive individual instruction in master classes in front of an audience. Many come for more than one summer.

generated over $460,000 for the local economy including hotel stays, restaurant meals, and local tourism. Stell hopes to compensate festival staff eventually, but in the meantime he’s pleased to be part of Staunton’s reinvigoration. “It’s exciting for us to see the way the downtown is starting to get energy again,” he says. “People come from all over and are charmed by the feel of it. The Shakespeare does an immense amount to bring people to town. Our mission is to maintain our concerts right downtown, to have them all within walking distance, so you can come for a noon concert, stick around and come back in the evening.” Minnie Stevenson has lived in Staunton for almost 40 years and sold homes for 27, and she marvels at how her little city has changed. “The city planners have turned Staunton from a small town to a place that everybody wants to be,” Stevenson says. “I’ve actually had people visit and stop in and say ‘we’re going to move here next year,’ because they were so impressed with the downtown area. The quality of life here is hard to beat. ”

The four-year old Emerging Composers Program chooses two composers through a nationwide audition process and commissions them to write songs for voice and piano. This year’s premieres will be heard in the Happy New Ear! program on the evening of Tuesday the 21st and in the free Emerging Composers program at noon on Friday the 24th. Tuesday’s program will include a conversation with composers. To attract an international lineup of musicians and present ambitious and innovative programming is a feat to make any community proud, even more so for a city like Staunton of fewer than 24,000 people. “One of the things I am happiest about is the quality of the music,” Stell says. “Even though we’re still volunteerrun with a fairly small budget, people come to the festival and they walk out asking ‘how do you put this on in this small town, and how did we never hear about it before?’ Once people discover it they plan around it for the next summer.” Total attendance was over 4,000 last year, with an average of 150 at free lunchtime concerts. People came from New York, Texas, California, and even London. All this activity is a boon to the city’s coffers as well as its reputation. An economic analysis this year found that last year’s events—the August festival plus four other concerts—

UVa’s Lawn:
Centerpiece of Tradition
CAAR Real Estate Weekly | celebrating 20 years 1992-2012
L
ong-time Charlottesville area residents know the University of Virginia (UVa) has “Grounds” rather than a campus, incoming admissions are “first-year” students rather than freshmen and the Lawn—a large, terraced grassy court—is the school’s centerpiece. First-years begin their university days with a special program called “Days on the Lawn” and finish by graduating on the Lawn. Each December, more than 20,000 tiny white light bulbs illuminate the surrounding buildings for the holidays. “The Lawn is the heart of the University where big events inevitably happen,” declares Larry Sabato, a student resident of 16 East Lawn in during the 1973-1974 academic year. A recent “big event” was seen in the demonstrations leading to President Sullivan’s reinstatement. Today Dr. Larry J. Sabato is again a Lawn resident, this time as a member of the faculty. Sabato is a Professor of Politics, founder of the UVa’s Center for Politics and frequent political analyst on national radio and TV. His highly respected “Crystal Ball”—a free weekly online non-partisan newsletter and website—is widely recognized as providing the nation’s most accurate electoral predictions, often approaching 100 percent. “Thomas Jefferson would be amazed at all the changes in his University,”
By Marilyn PriBus
he says, “but one part he would still recognize is the ‘academical village’ on the Lawn.” Learning was an integral part of life for Thomas Jefferson and his “academical village” was based on his belief that learning is a shared process enhanced by daily interaction between scholars and students outside the lecture hall. Mr. Jefferson drew up plans for the University’s first buildings to reflect these beliefs, expecting that learning should take place within his “academical village” of ten pavilions—stately faculty homes with living quarters upstairs and classrooms
downstairs—attached to two rows of student rooms. Each pavilion was identified with a subject to be studied with a resident professor who taught that subject.
Who lives on the Lawn? “The concept is still much the same,” says Sabato, “with students and faculty living side by side, mingling socially and engaging in more serious pursuits as well. The Lawn is far more diverse than in Jefferson’s day, of course, and the students are accomplished to a far greater degree than most of the early students— though we must always remember that Edgar Allan Poe was one of UVa’s first students.” He sees changes on the Lawn reflecting the advancement of American society, and the fulfillment of Jefferson’s dream that the University would be “based on the illimitable freedom of the human mind.”
Still, Sabato observes, “Not every moment on the Lawn is highminded. As former President John Casteen once commented, the Lawn can become a distinguished ‘playpen’ from time to time. The persistent, wee-hours, noisy custom of streaking comes to mind.” The first recorded act of streaking on the Grounds—racing around nude in public—was in the October 1937 edition of College Topics. In February 1974, the Cavalier Daily reported streakers on the Lawn, followed the same month by first-year students staging a “mass streak” which included the first documented female streaker. The tradition has since taken hold and some say that before claiming their degree, students must run naked from the Rotunda down the Lawn, kiss the statue of Homer, then streak back up the Lawn. Although student accommodations lack air conditioning and private baths, they have a powerful historical tradition and many aspire to live in one of the 54 available rooms. Rising seniors may apply to live in one of 47 Lawn rooms and it is a distinct honor to be chosen. The “Good Guy” room resident doesn’t need to belong to a particular group and an outstanding pre-med student is usually the resident of the John K. Crispell Memorial Room. Five of the remaining seven rooms are “endowed” by various organizations such as the Honor Committee and each has its own selection process Faculty members are chosen for residence in nine of the Pavilions with Pavilion VII reserved for the Colonnade Club, UVa’s faculty club. The University’s Board of Visitors has final approval over which faculty members may live in a pavilion. Pavilion residency is typically offered as a three- or five-year contract with the option to renew and Pavilion residents are expected to interact with their younger “Lawnie” neighbors, as Jefferson intended. “It is a singular honor to live on the Lawn, to be a daily witness to its beauty and majesty and human energy,” Sabato concludes. “Every Lawn resident—faculty administrator, and student—would agree. Living here links generations of students and faculty, and the Lawn itself is one of Mr. Jefferson’s greatest legacies to the nation. It has been one of the greatest pleasures of my own life to live here as a student and then again as a faculty member.”
Marilyn Pribus and her husband live just south of Charlottesville within sight of UVa.

What’s Happening Around Town? The Fresh Market Signs Lease for Charlottesville Store
CAAR Real Estate Weekly | celebrating 20 years 1992-2012
The Fresh Market continues to grow its chain of specialty grocery stores with a new location in Charlottesville, Virginia. The store will be located in the Albemarle Square Shopping Center, and will be the company’s 9th in the state.
“We are excited about our continued expansion in the Mid-Atlantic, and in Virginia in particular,” said Randy Kelley, senior vice president of real estate and development for The Fresh Market. “We look forward to building on the success of our other Virginia stores, where we enjoy a strong and loyal customer base, and to providing customers in the Charlottesville area with the same quality products and excellent customer service.” The Fresh Market has built its reputation on being an extraordinary food destination store. “From bountiful produce and a full-service meat counter to convenient prepared foods and an in-store bakery,” said Craig Carlock, the company’s president and CEO, “customers will dis-
cover that our stores are committed to variety, freshness and value as well as superior customer service.” For more information, visit www. thefreshmarket.com.
7th Annual Blue Ridge Mountain Music Fest The Virginia Piedmont is known for its beauty, its history, its crystal streams and hardwood forests, but it is also the home of a rich musical tradition. Drawing on a Scots-Irish heritage, the Blue Ridge settlers added voices from Africa and, in a unique medley of fiddle, banjo, bass and guitar, sang of America. Experience this uniquely American sound on Saturday, August 18, 2012 when Wintergreen Performing Arts will present the voices of the Blue Ridge through its 7th Annual Blue Ridge Mountain Music Fest. The 2012 program features the return of Nothin’ Fancy. Nothin’ Fancy formed as a bluegrass band in September 1994 to compete in the
East Coast Bluegrass Championship in Crimora, Virginia. Since their auspicious debut, they have grown in popularity, released eight full length albums and one CD single, played the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, the Lincoln Center in New York City, the Birchmere in Alexandria VA, have hosted their own festival in Buena Vista, VA since 2001, and won Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music in America’s “Entertaining Group of the Year” three consecutive years (2008, 2009, 2010) in a row. Their unique blend of zany on-stage humor with impressive bluegrass musicianship makes them audience pleasers wherever they perform.
Also returning to the Mountain Music Fest will be The Steel Wheels. The Steel Wheels are truly an Americana band, rooted in musical styles that explore the territories between blues and bluegrass, old-time singalongs and foot-stompin’ fiddle tunes. They are subtle innovators who respect the past but whistle their own tunes, layering in rich textures and decidedly modern energy to forge a new sound. The four-piece band is based in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, where lead singer and primary songwriter Trent Wagler has been a staple for nearly a decade. From a successful performance at last year’s Mountain Music
The Carys and Vigours (above Right) and Steel Wheels will both be performing at the 7th Annual Blue Ridge Mountain Music Fest
Fest comes the Albemarle and Nelson County-based traditional bluegrass music of The Virginia Ramblers. The day’s performances will conclude with the Appalachian string band music of Kim and Jimbo Cary & Pete and Ellen Vigour. The Carys and Vigours will be leading jamming sessions throughout the day. Ticketing will be by wristband purchase on the day of the Fest, but you can also reserve your tickets in advance. Tickets are $25 for adults; $10 for students (6-17); children under 6 are free.
