What’s Happening Around Town? Piedmont CASA Enjoys Early Christmas
It was like Christmas in August for Piedmont CASA, which was the recipient of 78 school backpacks prepared by volunteers from GE Intelligent Platforms, formerly GE FANUC. The backpacks, which were filled with age- and gender-appropriate items, were donated to CASA children so that they can start the new school year in style. These children are currently served by volunteers of Piedmont Court Appointed Special Advocates. “GE has been a wonderful supporter of CASA, providing these backpacks for 10 years,” said Ruth Stone, CASA President. “We are so thankful for their commitment to helping us help these children. They truly overwhelm us with their generosity,” she added. GE also provides Christmas presents for children served by CASA. “Our employees always look forward to the backpack drive,” said Kristie Spencer, Marketing Operations Director for GE. “Many of them make a family activity out of it and take the opportunity to teach their children and grandchildren about charity and compassion for those in need. We hope that the backpacks and supplies start all of the CASA kids off on a very happy and productive school year,” she added. Piedmont Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), Inc. provides trained volunteers to advocate for the best interests of abused and neglected children, promoting and supporting safe, permanent, and nurturing homes for child victims before the courts of the 16th Judicial District of Virginia.

Hope Grows at Camp Holiday Trails Camp Holiday Trails is a caring community committed to empowering, encouraging and educating campers with chronic illnesses, their families and healthcare professionals. On September 22, 2012 at 6:30 p.m., Camp Holiday Trails will host its annual Hope Grows Gala at St. Anne’s-Belfield School. The gathering comes out of the belief that children with a special medical need deserve and benefit from a positive camp experience. The facts are compelling: • 78 percent of Campers reported having a more positive outlook on their chronic illness after Camp. • The ongoing care of a child with a chronic illness has serious financial and emotional costs to a family. • Over 94 percent of families need financial aid to attend Camp. • Camp Holiday Trails fundraises year round and relies on over 600 Volunteers to support our mission.

Historic Gordonsville and Barboursville By Celeste M. sMuCker, PhD
Our area is rich in scenic beauty and historic significance
and draws visitors from all over the world. They come to learn about American history, go trout fishing in local streams, hike the mountain trails, enjoy the views and soak up Virginia hospitality.
Historic Gordonsville Gordonsville was named for Nathaniel Gordon who arrived in 1787 and purchased a plantation in Orange County. In 1794 he started a tavern at a location where today’s Gordonsville has a traffic circle. Back then many important guests frequented Gordon’s tavern including Thomas Jefferson, James Madison and Major General Marquis de Lafayette, the French military officer who served with George Washington during the Revolutionary War. The town officially became Gordonsville in 1813, and next year will celebrate its 200th birthday. Sabrina (Sam) Martyn, Gordonsville’s town manager, explained that plans are already under way for a big celebration that will feature what they hope will be the first of several big annual events. The town of Gordonsville became a significant economic center during the 19th century and as both a rail and road hub for key supplies, served an important role during the Civil War. The town was also noted for providing medical care at the Exchange Hotel Civil War Receiving Hospital. Once an elegant stopover for travelers, the hotel was converted to a hospital during the war and treated over 70,000 sick and wounded soldiers from both sides of the conflict. During reconstruction it became the Freedman’s Bureau Hospital and served newly freed slaves. An organization called Historic Gordonsville, Inc., restored the old hotel and hospital in 1971 and today it is a Civil War museum with three floors of displays featuring period
medical equipment, uniforms and weapons. In 1973 it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places and recognized again in 2002 as an African-American Memorial Site. A special plaque at the Exchange Hotel Museum honors what are known as “Gordonsville’s Legend-
ary Chicken Vendors.” These were African-American women who carried trays of fried chicken on their heads, which they sold to passengers on trains when they passed through town, a practice that continued until the mid-1900s. A Baltimore journalist, who wrote about these early
entrepreneurs, called the town “the chicken center of the universe.” In honor of this special part of Gordonsville’s heritage, Martyn said that one of next year’s 200th birthday events will be the first annual fried chicken festival. Look for it in May. Visitors are welcomed at the Exchange Hotel museum every day until 4:00 pm. See the website for details.
Present Day Gordonsville Today Gordonsville is known for its sense of community and small town atmosphere, explained Karen Gregg a REALTOR® with Montague Miller and Co. Realtors. She described it as a “caring community where people know their neighbors, and where they depend on each other.” Although she grew up in the big city and initially had reservations about living in a small town, Gregg said she loves living in Gordonsville, which she described as “wonderful.” As an example of how it is a caring community, Gregg referenced the Piedmont Regional Dental Clinic, a non-profit, community effort to provide low cost dental services to people in need. When residents recognized that there was an under served population in the area, they rallied their resources to buy a building and set up shop. Today staff, volunteers and two full time dentists run the clinic. Is Gordonsville right for you? Gregg has clients who work in Charlottesville, but live in Gordonsville because they like the more rural setting, the small

It’s also a great place for children, Gregg added. The accessibility of Interstate 64 makes Gordonsville a location that also works well for couples with one spouse working in Charlottesville and the other in Richmond, Gregg added. Sharon Merrick, a REALTOR® with Roy Wheeler Realty, Co., agrees that Gordonsville’s small town atmosphere is a big draw. “You get a great quality of life,” she said, “but you don’t give up a lot in the way of amenities because Charlottesville is so close by.” She pointed out that when you do have to get on the road there isn’t a lot of traffic and you can enjoy a beautiful, “idyllic” country drive.

ow at the end of summer and into the cooler days of fall, why not take a mini-vacation, join these visitors and experience some of why they come here in such numbers. A fun, nearby place to spend a weekend is the town of Gordonsville. When you arrive there you will find historic and educational opportunities, as well as quaint shops, bed and breakfasts and exceptional restaurants, and on the way you can stop and sample the wine or have a picnic at Barboursville’s historic vineyards. While you are in Gordonsville, don’t forget to investigate the local real estate market. You might decide you like the friendly small town atmosphere and local home prices so much you decide to stay.

Merrick has worked with a number of couples that have relocated to Gordonsville from Northern Virginia. “Some of them,” she said, “are planning for retirement, and are buying now anticipating that prices will start to rise in 2013.” People from that part of the state also like the idea that their money will buy a house on a good sized piece of land with lots of space to spread out. They enjoy the natural beauty and love walking their property, which is so much bigger than what they were accustomed to in Northern Virginia.
The Gordonsville area also appeals to families with children. Since it straddles the three counties of Albemarle, Louisa and Orange, relocating families have three public school systems to choose from. There are also several nearby private schools including Grymes Memorial, a day school for kindergarten through 8th grade, and Woodberry Forest, a boarding school for high school aged boys originally owned by the brother of James Madison. Merrick has also had clients who, for a variety of reasons, reluctantly sold their homes in Gordonsville to
Gordonsville offers both elegant French food at Pomme, which attracts customers from as far away as Northern Virginia and Richmond, or casual fare at the Barbeque Exchange that, in 2011, tied for first place in a Cville sponsored contest to find the best local barbeque.

Many structures that survived after 1860 were treated to enlargement and some restoration. Between 1905– 1930, Windsor received a 2-story wood frame addition which brought the kitchen into the Main House. Another 2-story wood structure provided Summer sleeping porches. In 1946, Floyd Elmer Johnson, a leading Restoration Architect and UVA graduate (1934) was commissioned to restore Windsor to her original prominence as initially designed. Since then Windsor has stood strong while one project at a time is addressed to keep her in good standing. Her wonderful wrap-around front porch framed with colossal Ionic columns has been restored and provides a veranda from both the double-parlor Room and the large 51)( , /&5 '#&35Living ,'5)Äż , 5 ),5." 5Ĺ€,-.5.#' 5#(5 lf53,-85gfl8o5 , -5) Dining Room. 5)* (5,)&&#(!5& ( 51#."5- 0 , &5 The four chimneys are .&35-#./ . 5 .5." 5 ! 5) 5 #-.),# 5 in -., '-5 ( 5* , good working order for the eight fire ), )(-0#&& 85Äť 5 ,)* ,.35")& -5'/ "5#(0 -.' She stands there ever so proudly perched on her knoll with an expansive view of the Southwest Mountains. If 160+ years gifts you the Test of Time, then Windsor has earned her keep. Built in 1848 by William Cowherd (of Cowherd Mountain fame), a lovely Country Estate using brick (Jefferson’s preferred building material) when the trend was to build more expensive, showy plantation houses. Windsor’s historical architectural significance is in good company with; East Belmont, Tall Oaks, Cobham Park and Castle Hill. You’ll find her in all of the History Books regarding Albemarle County. Professor Ed Lay provides a detailed description as: “The Home is a five-bay, double-pile Greek Revival-style dwelling with a hipped roof and gableend chimneys.â€? Windsor has been Home to several prominent Virginia families including James Field, Attorney General of Virginia (1877-82).

One of them confided recently that even though she was moving she planned to come back regularly to visit friends and enjoy shopping at her favorite stores because she knew she wouldn’t get that same personal small town service in the big city. A special favorite of local residents is the pharmacy which is also a butcher shop and market.
Shopping, Restaurants and other Fun Things One of Gordonsville’s attractions is its walkable downtown area with its quaint shops and outstanding restaurants.

Recently the town received a grant from VDOT, which pays to spruce up the downtown area and make it more visitor friendly. Called the Main Street Streetscape Project, the money will be used to make the area more aesthetically pleasing and allow for improved pedestrian safety. Changes will include enhanced crosswalks, wider sidewalks, and improved directional signage. In addition they will be improving the landscaping, adding more trees and incorporating better lighting.
provements. In most cases though, the government money came first and private investment followed. In the case of Gordonsville, however, it was just the opposite. Private equity helped create the original downtown, and government money is coming into play later to improve on the private initiative. Good times to visit Gordonsville are during some of the growing number of annual activities, which attract people to the area. One of these is the Gordonsville street festival, which

According to Martyn, design work on this project is now in its final stages and they anticipate that construction will begin mid to late 2013. Plans also include increasing the number of parking places. “Gordonsville is becoming a destination,” she said. “The improvements will make downtown more user friendly and encourage people to drive, stop and shop.” Merrick, who owns a women’s clothing boutique on Gordonsville’s Main Street, is excited about the improvements. She was proud to say that over the years many small towns in Virginia have benefited from government funds for these kinds of im-
takes place every year on the first Saturday of October. This year it will be October 6th. Held on Main Street it features food, crafts and live entertainment. Gordonsville is also known for its holiday lighting, which Martyn says brings people in from all over the area, some from many miles away. Next year will feature the fried chicken festival in May along with a Veterans Day parade the second Saturday of November, both introduced as part of Gordonsville’s 200th birthday celebration. Gordonsville offers hungry visitors many options when it comes to food. On the one hand there is elegant French food at Pomme, which attracts customers from as far away as Northern Virginia and Richmond. Visitors seeking more casual fare can enjoy the Barbeque Exchange that, in 2011, tied for first place in a Cville sponsored contest to find the best local barbeque. Another Gordonsville attraction is Horton Vineyards. Started by Dennis Horton in 1983, it offers daily wine tastings as well as special events throughout the year. Coming up November 3rd and 4th is an opportunity to sample 2011 and 2012 wines directly from the barrel, as well as a
In 1976, the property was acquired by Gianni Zonin with the intention of planting grapes and creating a vineyard. While many before him, including Thomas Jefferson, attempted unsuccessfully to cultivate grapes and advised him to plant tobacco instead, Zonin, whose family has been in the wine business for generations, persevered with his plan to grow grapes and make wine. Today he has a successful vineyard to show for it, and has been joined by many other successful vineyards in this area. When you plan your mini-vacation put Barboursville Vineyards on the list of places to stop. It is open for wine tasting seven days a week, but tours of the winery are only available on Saturday or Sunday. Allow time for a self-guided tour of the ruins of the Barbour home, which overlooks a beautiful park where you can walk and stop for a picnic lunch. You can also visit the wine museum opened in 2006 to celebrate this winery’s 30th birthday. Overnight accommodations are available here along with Palladio, a restaurant featuring northern Italian cuisine.

Barboursville Vineyards Barboursville is an unincorporated area in Albemarle County between Charlottesville and Gordonsville. It was named for James Barbour, Virginia’s 19th Governor and friend of Thomas Jefferson who designed his home, one of only three he designed for friends. The Barbour family lived there until it was destroyed by fire in December of 1884.

Eco-Friendly Paints and Stains

f your goal is to have an ecologically sound home, choosing low-VOC (volatile organic compounds) or zero-VOC paint is an important step toward turning your interior or exterior paint job “green.” Why is this important? VOCs are solids and liquids that convert easily to gas or vapor at room temperature. VOCs are contained in many paint products and have been linked to a variety of health problems. A 2002 study by the National Cancer Institute found that men and women working in the painting trades had a “significantly increased” risk of cancer, a result that indicates that paints may be dangerous to your health, your family, and the environment. On the mild side, paints with VOCs can make your eyes water and give you headaches; more seriously, they can trigger asthma and other respiratory diseases. Since furniture stains contain many of the same chemicals in paint, you’ll fare no better with most stains. Common VOCs in paint include ethylene glycol (the same chemical compound found in antifreeze), formaldehyde, benzene, and a variety of other flammable or toxic chemicals. You can discover this for yourself by reading the paint’s materials safety data sheet (MSDS), displayed in paint stores or available from a paint manufacturer’s website, which
lists the hazardous materials the product contains. Paints also contain toxic fungicides to prevent mildew growth, and biocides, which are used as preservatives to extend the full shelf life. Toxic biocides can be detected in the air five years after the paint containing the chemicals is applied. Like VOCs, fungicides and biocides contaminate both indoor and outdoor air. If paint is not disposed of properly, those chemicals can seep into groundwater. Current EPA regulations limit VOCs to 250 grams/liter in latex paint, and 380 grams/ liter in oil-based paint. Low-VOC
Milk paint and natural paints are the first choice for commercially available interior paint. Natural paints are derived from substances such as citrus and balsam, as well as minerals. Although these paints are made with natural materials and are petroleum-free, they often contain terpenes, which are VOCs derived from plants. However, natural paints do not off-gas biocides and fungicides. Milk paint, which is made with milk protein (called “casein”) and lime, was the interior paint of choice in Colonial America. Milk paint is excellent for interiors and also gives wood a rich, deep color, allowing the grain to show through. Latex paint with very low biocide and VOC levels is another top-tier choice. Again, latex paint is safer for the environment than oil-based paint, but it needs to be used with great care due to the strong terpenes. Acceptable paints, although they contain biocides, include latex,

I s s u e 21 - 3 5 | a u g u s t 3 0 - s e p t e m b e r 5 , 2 0 1 2 acrylic, and recycled latex paints, assuming they don’t contain mercury or lead. Avoid oil- and solvent-based paints. Like paints, stains can also contain high levels of biocides, fungicides, and VOCs, and higher still levels of pesticides, all of which pose the same problems. To avoid polluting your indoor air and outdoor environment, use water-based stains and sealants without biocides and added dryers, or those made with beeswax or carnauba wax. Clear stains are loaded with pesticides and wood preservatives. Darker stains and sealants tend to be less toxic.
can add up when you’re painting an entire house. Contractors know how to keep costs down by buying only as much paint, primer, putty, and caulk as they need for a job. If you’re doing the work yourself, consult a paintstore expert or use a paint calculator so you buy only what you absolutely need to reduce waste. It’s also important to use quality tools and take care of them because after all, waste isn’t green. Cheap brushes lose bristles and can make a mess of the job. So do cheap rollers and sprayers. For DIY projects, buy the best brushes you can afford and commit to washing them carefully

Acrylic urethanes manufactured without the addition of biocides are acceptable choices for those who aren’t chemically sensitive. So is shellac (the alcohol evaporates). Avoid epoxies and oil-based formulas with dryers.
Gaining in Popularity With little to no odor and quality and coverage that is competitive with conventional products, today’s lowVOC paints are gaining in popularity. The only drawback is the higher cost: about $10 more per gallon than conventional premium paints. That
after each use. It often doesn’t pay to wash and reuse roller cartridges; buy the best you can and dispose of them when the paint on them has dried completely. To complete your “green project, be sure to recycle the steel cans. If you end up with a substantial amount of paint left, you can save it by storing the can upside down to create a tight seal around the lid. Or better yet, donate it to a local community organization that can use it. You can also dispose empty or dried paint cans and solvents at a county hazardous waste landfill.
