Another Celebrate 250 Partnership Signature Event! The City of Charlottesville and the University of Virginia are hosting a gala that will give area residents a chance to celebrate Charlottesville. Kool & The Gang will headline the “Celebrate! 250 Gala” at the John Paul Jones Arena November 11 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are priced from $10 to $30 and are on sale now. “As you know, for many months citizens and city staff have been planning a yearlong celebration for our 250th anniversary of our founding in 1762,” said Charlottesville Mayor Satyendra Huja. “Many great community events have already taken place, from street festivals to exhibits.” He said the gala, part of a weekend-long series of events, will include local performers, highlighting talent and diversity in the community. Ida Lee Wootten, director of U.Va.’s Office of Community Relations, said the University has partnered with the city in several ways to mark the 250th anniversary. The Heritage Theatre Festival presented the popular historical musical “1776” this summer. The Albert and Shirley Small Special Collections Library has provided historical photographs that are being used throughout the celebration. In addition, the library has an exhibit, on view through Jan. 5, that displays a broad range of artifacts, - everything from the oldest known city map to a section of the rope used to hang a murderous mayor. The

items, which evoke major events in the city, include a Bible used in the coronation of Queen Charlotte, the city’s namesake. The Charlottesville 250th Anniversary Exhibit, which is co-sponsored by the Special Collections Library and Community Relations Office, is free and open to the public. “We are delighted that the University of Virginia can help support the communitywide celebration by hosting the gala at the John Paul Jones Arena,” Wootten said. “We hope that area residents will enjoy celebrating together Charlottesville’s distinctive history and cultural vibrancy.” Tickets can be purchased at the John Paul Jones Arena website or through Ticketmaster.

Three Wishes ... Come True The Bridge Progressve Arts Initiative (PAI) will present “Three Wishes ... Come True,” a retrospective show spanning over two decades of Christopher Hlad’s unique, dynamic, and bold work. Comprised of selections from the thousands of photographs, films, collages, and poems that Christopher has created over the years, the show promises to be an aural and visual extravaganza that highlights the artist’s interests in spectacle, magic, and Charlottesville itself. The opening reception will take place on Friday, October 5 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at The Bridge PAI, 209 Monticello Road in Charlottesville. Over the course of the month the gallery will be transformed and reconfigured, as when an item is sold it can walk out the door, to be replaced with a new one. The gallery

will thus be an ever-shifting narrative trip through Christopher’s thematic tics and lifelong loves: rock and roll, portraiture, documentation, fandom, words/language, and totemic objects. Other highlights will include collaborations with David Berman (Drag City recording artists the Silver Jews), consisting of five cartoons based on text supplied by Christopher, and Ben Chasny (Drag City recording artist, Six Organs of Admittance, Rangda), comprising an original guitar treatment/composition for which Christopher will provide a live spoken word accompaniment, as well as various musical events, performances, and film and video pieces. Virginia Film Festival Announces Return Of Adrenaline Film Project The Adrenaline Film Project, a Virginia Film Festival staple since 2004, will once again play an important role as the Festival celebrates its upcoming 25th Anniversary from November 1-4 in Charlottesville. The Virginia Film Festival is presented by the University of Virginia’s College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences. Each year, the Adrenaline Film Project adds a highly-caffeinated jolt to the Festival proceedings by giving a dozen teams of filmmakers the chance to write, cast, shoot, edit and screen an original short film in 72 hours. The entire event culminates in a competitive, packed-house screening at the University of Virginia’s Newcomb Theater in which the audience votes for their favorite films. Awards are also handed out from a jury of VFF mentors made up of Festival guests, and often including high profile Hollywood producers and filmmakers. The Adrenaline Film Project was founded and has been helmed for the past eight years by filmmaker and Charlottesville native Jeff Wadlow, who is unable to attend this fall, as he is in production on his upcoming feature for Universal Studios, Kick Ass 2. However, Wadlow helped handpick University of Virginia alumnus and longtime Adrenaline veteran Romulo Alejandro and director Derek Sieg, whose critically acclaimed debut film Swedish Auto opened the VFF in 2006. “Rom Alejandro and Derek Sieg are the perfect filmmakers to take over for me this year,” Wadlow said. “As much as I hate missing this 25th Anniversary Celebration, I feel like Adrenaline is in rock solid hands. As well as new homebuyers and curiosity seekers, the Parade always attracts a goodly number of people in the market for remodeling ideas for their existing home. “The parade is a great opportunity to engage the builders and site agents and learn more about trends in new construction that also apply to remodeling,” Slater said. “Many people are doing remodeling that is not just cosmetic,” he continued. “Energy efficiency retrofits are very popular and the Parade builders are a good resource for information on this topic. They really know their stuff.”

Trends in New Home Construction Learning about new technology and design concepts can be high points of the Parade. Beau Dickerson, of Dickerson Homes and Development, described some of the new features to look for in contemporary bathrooms. One popular example is the invisible shower drain. Dickerson explained that instead of having the standard big round drain in your shower, the invisible variety is actually a gap big enough for water to flow out but which is artfully covered with tile so you can’t see it. It’s an aesthetic feature that adds a lot to the look and feel of your shower.

Another innovation turns your shower into a spa-like experience. “Big shower heads used to be the norm,” Dickerson explained, “but today they are available with multiple heads that have temperature controlled nozzles regulated by thermostats.” Expect to pay $300 to $400, a relatively small price for something that adds so much luxury to your daily life. Other new home features to look for when visiting the Parade include water saving toilets, scald guard faucets and tankless water heaters. Kitchen innovations are also on display at the Parade. Dickerson described cabinetry that is more detailed and elaborate, and soft close doors and drawers which means they are protected from damage when they are slammed. Kent highlighted his company’s use of oak, cherry and maple cabinets as well as ceramic tile floors in both kitchens and baths.

Energy Efficiency Energy efficiency is a major concern of new homebuyers, and the good news is, if you are moving into a new home from one that is 20 years old or more, you may enjoy as much as 50 percent savings in your monthly utility bills thanks in large part to improved insulation technology. One popular approach is spray foam insulation that studies at the US Department of Energy show is as much as 50 percent more effective than conventional insulation products. Whereas the expense of this product has been prohibitive in the past, Slater said it has now come down in price and is much more affordable. A home’s construction can also affect how well it is insulated. Kent described his company’s practice of using 2x6 construction that supports superior insulation including R-20 in the walls and R-38 in the ceilings. Regardless of whether you are looking to buy a new home or are planning to renovate your existing place, be prepared with your questions about insulation, and also be ready to ask about the latest advances in energy

efficient windows, doors, appliances and HVAC technology. Parade builders and agents are eager to answer. “We have a strong push today to educate consumers about energy savings. The use of energy efficiency technology impacts the whole market,” Slater said.

How to Get the Most from the Parade The agents and builders agree, to get the most from the Parade visit as many homes and neighborhoods as possible. “Consumers can get the most out of the Parade by visiting a wide range of homes in different communities,” Kent said. “That way you can see a lot of different style homes in different price points to get a better feel for the available options in our local Real Estate market,” he continued. Kent represents Craig Builders, which will have seven homes in four different communities this year. “Get to as many homes as possible,” Slater added, “ but just as important, engage the builders and site agents and learn as much as you can about trends.” Dickerson suggested visiting all the homes in one area, then move on to another one. He also urges everyone to visit at least one or two homes in the $1 million price range since this is a good way to learn about all the available special features. “It’s a good idea to check out the homes before you actually visit the Parade,” Kuznar said.
