Seven Charlottesville celebrities are hard at work preparing to “Shake, Rattle and Roll” at the Charlottesville-albemarle SPCa’s Critter Ball. Back by popular demand, the highlight of the Critter Ball will be the fifties themed “Shake, Rattle and Roll Dance Competition.” On Saturday, October 29, 2011, local
celebrities and community leaders, paired with professional dancers, will be “Shaking it” on the dance floor in an effort to raise funds to help the animals. This year’s event marks a Whole Lotta Lovin’ in our community as Charlottesville-albemarle celebrates five full years as a No Kill Community. Over the last five years, with the community’s support, the SPCa has: • Found homes for more than 20,000 pets; • Cared for more than 23,000 animals at the SPCa facility; • Spayed and neutered more than 25,000 dogs and cats; • Provided life-saving medical care to more than 12,000 dogs and cats; and • Reunited more than 4,000 lost pets with their owners.

Currently, there are 3,239 homes on the market, compared to 3,506 at this time one year ago. This continual float down of active inventory represents progress toward what is considered a balanced, neither buyer’s nor seller’s advantaged, market of 2,000 to 2,500 listings. The median price of homes sold so far in 2011 is $230,750, which is down 7.3% from the same period last year. The average Days on Market (DOM) of active listings is 108 days in the third quarter—a 5.9% decrease from previous quarter— and 117 days for the year to date, remaining unchanged since the same period last year. 2011 CAAR President Barbara McMurry observes, “It is mixed news this quarter. We are continuing to see stabilization in our local market, as evidenced by our average DOM and decreasing inventory. However, prices remain remain weak despite ideal conditions.” Inventory continues on the decline and is 7.6% down from the same time last year. There are fewer new listings coming on the market, down 26.8% from 1,990 in the second quarter to 1,457 in this quarter. The year to date year-over-year comparison shows a decrease of 9.1% in new listings. These factors, coupled with lower median sales prices are helping to improve the absorption rate. “However, there is still caution with predicting price stability and pace of sales until we reach what would be considered historically level inventory,” cautions Brad Conner, 2011 CAAR President-Elect. Housing affordability continues to be the positive aspect of this market. There are 1,022 homes for sale at $200,000 or less. The sale of condos and townhomes is still an attractive options for buyers in this market. The sale of attached homes in the City of Charlottesville increased 11% compared to the previous year. The local market has taken advantage of stabilizing home prices as well as historically low mortgage rates, offering many the realization of home ownership. We will continue to monitor these factors. Any declines in the health of the regional economy and access to home loans could continue to impact the sustainability of incremental increases and decreases month to month in the marketplace. For now, we will keep watching the inventory of homes for sale and the number of foreclosures coming into our local market. If we see inventory levels continue to decline and the pace of foreclosures stays steady, it is logical, although not predictable, to see prices begin to inch upward. The Committee has been busy preparing for the Market for the past year. “I compare my excitement to planning a wedding,” declares Terri Bailey, the endlessly enthusiastic Chair of this year’s Market. She says the efforts of the dedicated members of the committee have laid the groundwork for a joyous and festive occasion. For example, Beth Wertheim is this year’s Decoration Chair and Bailey says the results are well worth the effort. “Our Market will have the look and feel of a charming and lovely garden oasis,” she says. “We are thankful for
Snow’s Garden Center in helping us to turn our vision into such a beautiful reality.” The Market will be a three-day delight, with boutique-type merchandise from all over the country which has been chosen to have a variety of price ranges to appeal to every shopper including clothing, jewelry, toys, gifts, gourmet foods, home furnishings and much, much more. Last year’s Market brought in more than $250,000 to benefit MJH programs. That’s a quarter of a million dollars! explains Jennifer Woodsmall Larson, the daughter in the mother/daughter team who founded the company. “We very much believe in empowering women, whether in the States or abroad, and so are committed to supporting The Women’s Committee of MJH through participation in Martha’s Market.” One of the new vendors this year is Janet Egan Designs from South Dartmouth, MA, which specializes in silk haute couture. “Part of our mission statement is philanthropy,” says founder/owner Janet Egan, “and in the five years we’ve been in business we’ve contributed more than $145,000 to 89 charities.” She says
they are very excited to participate in Martha’s Market for the first time. “We understand that the show is excellent and it supports a cause very dear to my heart—breast cancer and the MJH Foundation. What the Market Supports Since 1994, The Women’s Committee has helped fund many facets of women’s healthcare, with the primary emphasis on breast health. Fundraising supports computer-assisted-detection software that increases the accuracy of digital mammography imaging, women’s midlife health, and heart disease as well as

with the selection process and ensure both outstanding collections and a nice variety. The Market contracts only with vendors outside of the MJH service area—that is, vendors beyond Charlottesville and the surrounding counties of Albemarle, Greene, Nelson, Louisa, Fluvanna, Madison, Orange and Buckingham. This has been the policy since the beginning of Martha’s Market, aimed at offering local shoppers access to vendors not ordinarily available to them. There is a real effort to keep the Market fresh and unique each year and fifteen percent of every sale goes directly to support women’s breast health programs. “We’ve participated in Martha’s Market since 2002,” says Trisha Anderson, President of Frontier Soups in Waukegan, Il., which offers dried, all-natural gourmet soup mixes. “Taking part in holiday markets is the way the company started and now—celebrating our 25th anniversary—we still love those markets where we offer tastes of our 37 varieties. This is our only East Coast market and we love returning year after year.” “We are truly honored to be a part of this wonderful show,” says Maggie Cabot. Here are just three that indicate some of the scope of the work to which The Women’s Committee contributes includes: • The Cancer Resource Center where Coordinator Vicky Brunjes offers educational materials and other programs dedicated to supporting individuals receiving treatment in the Cancer Care Center. • Support for Early Detection through the Biannual Breast Health Screening Days, Breast Health Liaison, Digital Mammography, Computer-Assisted Detection (CAD), and MRI. • Our Cloak of Caring through support for Palliative Care, Breast Health Fund, Lymphedema Care, Infusion Center chairs, blanket warmers, and robes. The big news this year, of course, is that the hospital staff has completed the move to the new facility at Pantops with beautiful views inside and out. All patients coming for appointments at the Phillips Cancer Center walk past the highly visible and convenient Cancer Resource Center. Adjoining the Center is Marianne’s Room, where last year 200 patients who had lost their hair were gifted with wigs—especially important to those who lacked the resources to make such a purchase. Marianne’s Room also provides scarves, special chemo caps, soft post-operative prostheses, education, restorative makeup and other support to women undergoing cancer treatment in an effort to address not only their physical needs,

The Women’s Committee and the Charlottesville Community Make It Happen Planning Martha’s Market is a yearlong enterprise involving hundreds of people dealing with accounting, decorations, tickets, hospitality, mailing, membership, preview party, public relations, special events, sponsors, and vendors. In short, Martha’s Market would be impossible without the dedication of The Women’s Committee. It takes some three days to set up and decorate for the Market, three hectic but rewarding days while the Market is open followed by a concerted (and exhausting) cleanup effort. Market Chair Bailey says, “My first encounter with the Market was seven years ago as a shopper. I immediately became interested in becoming a part of it because I believed in the cause.” She notes that The Women’s Committee members join for a variety of reasons. “I think the most compelling reason is because they also believe in the cause,” she says. “Some are breast cancer survivors themselves or have had a family member or friend that has been touched by the disease. Other women are new to our community and join to network.” There are nearly 150 active members of The Women’s Committee. Each one has a strong interest in being an ambassador for MJH and supports the Committee financially as well as with countless volunteer hours.

he front porch, while not strictly necessary, can make a house more attractive, inviting, livable, and even valuable. What’s more, the front porch is an American tradition, part of our way of life, with a long history and deep cultural meaning—so deep that we are not always conscious of it. If you intend to build a new house or alter an existing one, consider adding a porch. From a practical point of view, a covered entry provides shelter from rain, snow and scorching sun. Think of unlocking the door in a storm, while carrying a heavy bag. The porch provides a place to take off wet boots, to deliver a newspaper or package, or to wait after knocking. The roof shades the glass area beyond, a consideration in hot, sunny climates. And the protection from weather makes doors and windows last longer, less likely to warp, split and rot. At least as important as these practical advantages, the front porch serves as a transition from inside to outside, an intermediate zone that is both public and private. By old habit, Americans sat on their porches in warm weather, talked to neighbors, and observed the passing scene. It still happens in small towns, including the one I live in, though air conditioning is blamed for a general retreat

How big should a front porch be? Many people feel that wider is better, and a porch that spans the whole front of the house is ideal. Others like a wrap-around porch, one that turns a corner. An advantage to this type is varied sun exposure for different times of the day. The corner may get special treatment, rounded or chamfered, or even a turret roof, like a gazebo attached to the house. For a porch that is only an entry, it is good to allow a little room to each side of the door for ease of passage, if not for a place to sit. Six feet (two meters) is good, given that posts occupy some of the area. How deep should you make a porch? Again, the minimum dimension for seating and a passageway is six feet. Front porches that are five and even four feet deep occasionally show up in new houses, but such a shallow porch is for show—a decorative accessory, instead of a useful outdoor space. For eating and other activities, more depth is needed, such as eight feet or more. At this dimension, the porch roof will be pitched low or flat, to fit under the sills of the second floor windows. And at very low pitches, the roof material must be metal or rubber instead of shingle. The style of the porch should match the style of the house. Rustic posts and unpainted railings would be out of step with a Georgian or Federal house, for example, which should have slender columns and delicate wood or wrought-iron railings. Victorian or Queen Anne houses often have elaborate woodwork or “gingerbread” on the porch, including brackets and a valance. For some houses, the porch is itself the stylemaker. Think of a classic bungalow, one story with a porch across the front, a deep overhang, and perhaps a low gable above.
The symbolism extends to how the porch is furnished. It can look bare and impersonal, or it can be an outdoor living room, with chairs, tables, plants, and sculpture. indoors during summer. Porches are usually elevated a bit from ground level, so a person seated on a porch is at eye level or higher than a person standing in the street—a psychological advantage. Railings reinforce the sense of protection. City governments in the United States sometimes encourage front porch use as a way of making neighborhoods safe and friendly. They sponsor campaigns to “Turn on your porch lights.” By the same token, a visitor can stand or sit here without trespassing
in the home. You can talk to someone here that you do not want to invite inside, and still avoid being rude. The shelter is both real and symbolic, a neat way to handle a social interaction. Porches in the South are sometimes opulent—a display of good taste and the owner’s flair for hospitality.
Porches cost less to build than fully enclosed rooms. So the addition of a porch is a cost-effective way to increase living area, dress up the front of a house, and increase its curb appeal. Realtors say that first impressions count, when buyers go looking at houses for sale. The front must be appealing for them to want to step inside. Even if you don’t want to sell, you can add to the value of your home by adding an attractive, well-designed front porch.
