Most of all, it brings us great movies, almost too many to choose from. After 25 years it might be easy to take that all for granted, but when each year’s new schedule is unveiled, we remember what an embarrassment of riches we really have. The Virginia Film Festival celebrates its 25th anniversary Thursday, November 1 through Sunday, November 4 by screening more than 120 films including Hollywood hits-to-be, hottopic documentaries, and a Disney classic in an old-fashioned movie palace. Festival founders Patricia Kluge and former Virginia governor Gerald Baliles will be honored on opening night, and kids will get the red carpet treatment on Family Day. Fresh work from the 72-hour Adrenaline Film contest, the Young Filmmakers Academy for school kids, and a new competition for high schools students will further fire the imagination over a long weekend devoted to the art of movies and the artists who make them. “I feel like this is far and away the strongest film program we have had in my four years here,” Director Jody Kielbasa says, “and I think audiences will be particularly interested in the wide range of themes and ideas represented. This year, we will have a number of films that take a look at some of today’s most hotly debated political issues, as well as some of the most iconic political figures of our time.” A couple of the most respected political journalists of our time, Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, will be at the Paramount Theater Friday

THe VIRGINIA FILM FeSTIVAL’S 25TH YeAR By Ken Wilson
for a 7:00 p.m. showing of All the President’s Men to mark the 40th anniversary of Watergate. The screening will launch the “Presidency in Film,” a partnership with the University of Virginia’s Miller Center. “In sitting down with Governor Baliles, he proposed the idea of a new series that focuses on the American presidency,” Kielbasa says, “and how it is and has been portrayed in film over the years, and I thought that was simply a fascinating idea.” The Governor will moderate the post-film discussion. On opening night the Paramount will feature two major new releases. Not Fade Away, starring James Gandolfini and directed by Sopranos creator David Chase, is a dreams-of-rock ‘n roll-stardom pic set in 1964 New Jersey. A hit at the prestigious New York Film Festival, it was produced by Mark Johnson, chairman of Virginia Film Festival’s advisory board, and producer of Rain Man, the 1988 Academy Award winner for Best Picture that was shown at the very first festival here. Johnson will be here for the 7:00 p.m. screening. Not Fade Away will be followed at 10:30 p.m. by The Man with the Iron Fists, a much anticipated martial arts epic set in feudal China starring Russell Crowe, Pam Grier, Lucy Lui and hip-hop star RZA. Produced by festival advisory board member Mark Abraham and directed by RZA himself, it’s the story of warriors, assassins, and a weapons-forging blacksmith who save a small village from destruction. This year’s Centerpiece Film, 7:00 p.m. Saturday at the Paramount, is David O. Russell Silver Linings Playbook, a dramatic comedy starring Bradley Cooper and Academy Awardwinner Jennifer Lawrence along with Robert DeNiro and Julia Stiles. In the Season: The Edna Lewis Story explores the life of the woman called the South’s answer to Julia Child. Born in a small farming community in Orange County, Virginia, Lewis and her husband ran a hip New York City restaurant in the 1950s and 60s. When she published The Taste of Country Cooking in 1976, NY Times food critic Craig Claiborne said it “may well be the most entertaining regional cookbook in America.” In A Late Quartet, lust and professional jealousy threaten the survival of a New York string quartet after the cellist is diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. Philip Seymour Hoffman, Christopher Walken, and Catherine Keener star in this drama directed by Yaron Zilberman, Friday at 6:45 p.m. at the Regal Downtown. Faces in the Mirror is Dave Matthews Band violinist Boyd Tinsley’s first foray into film. Tinsley wrote the music before he had a script, and the film has little dialogue, but a score Rolling Stone magazine calls “intense” and “percussion-heavy.” A story of a resentful young man who returns home to bury his father and finds himself on a dream-like odyssey, looking for forgiveness, Faces in the Mirror plays Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Newcomb Hall Theater. Discussion will follow with Tinsley, director Aaron Farrington, and lead actor Ryan Orr. Based on a hit off-Broadway play, Between Us is a dark comedy about a friendship between two couples,

It’s a hopeful drama about a 17-year-old French-Israeli girl in Jerusalem. Yearning for political peace, she slips a letter into a bottle and asks her soldier brother to drop it in the Gaza, then begins an email correspondence with the young Palestinian boy who finds it.

Ethel is Rory Kennedy’s new documentary on the life of her mother. “This film means a great deal to me,” Kielbasa says, “most importantly because of its place in Charlottesville’s history.” He’s referring to the historic blow for Virginia civil rights that Bobby Kennedy struck at UVA in 1953 when he secured an invitation for U.N. diplomat and Nobel Peace Prize winner Ralph Bunche to speak before an integrated audience. That speech took place in Old Cabell Hall, where Ethel will be screened at 1:00 p.m. Saturday. The post-film discussion with Ethel and Bobby’s son Max, will be moderated by UVA political guru Larry Sabato. Actor and activist George Clooney and his television journalist father Nick traveled to Darfur in 2006 to
spotlight the genocidal violence and heroic relief work taking place in western Sudan. The frank documentary that resulted, A Journey to Darfur, will be shown Saturday at 4:00 p.m. at UVA’s Nau Auditorium. Bill Murray stars as Franklin D. Roosevelt and Laura Linney plays his cousin Margaret Suckley in Hyde Park on Hudson, the story of a 1939 visit by the King and Queen of England to FDR’s New York country estate. With Britain facing imminent war with Germany, the King is hoping to secure American support; Suckley and Roosevelt are beginning an affair. The lighthearted drama will be shown Saturday at 6:15 p.m. at Newcomb Hall Theater. Hava Nagila is a Jewish folk song often played at weddings and Bar and Bat Mitzvahs. “The words beckon one to be joyful,” says Rabbi Dan Alexander of Charlottesville’s Congregation Beth Israel, noting that the melody is so popular “it has been heard over the PA systems of major league baseball games even in cities without substantial Jewish populations.” Hava Nagila (The Movie) traces the cultural history of the songs from its roots in the shtetls of Eastern Europe to Catskills, Greenwich Village, Hollywood, and Bollywood with performances by Harry Belafonte, Leonard Nimoy, Regina Spektor, and Connie Francis. UVA ethnomusicologist Jim Loeffler will introduce the film and possibly encourage dancing Saturday at 4:30 p.m. at Vinegar Hill. The Sessions features John Hawkes as a 38-year old man, paralyzed from the neck down and stuck in an iron lung since childhood, but determined to lose his virginity. Co-starring Helen Hunt and based on a true story, the film won the Audience Award and the Special Jury Prize for Ensemble Acting at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival. The Paramount will show it Sunday, November 4 at 7:30 p.m.. Charlottesville native and Western Albemarle High School graduate Billy Campbell, most recently known as political candidate Darren Richmond in the AMC series The Killing, is the father of a suicidal teen in Fat Kid Rules the World. Campbell and director Matthew Lillard will be at Newcomb Hall Theater Sunday at 7:00 p.m. to screen and discuss the new film. So many great movies in just four days could make a person want to get into the act, and the Festival channels the urge through a variety of creative programs. In the 72-hour Adrenaline Film Project, ten to twelve teams

Virginia is horse country and nowhere is that more apparent than at the Montpelier hunt races. held at the historic home of James and Dolley Madison, this annual event puts the spotlight on orange county and draws horse enthusiasts from across the nation—generating county income and showcasing the area’s tranquil setting to potential buyers. “orange is great for farms in general and horse farms in particular,” observes gayle harvey, owner of gayle harvey real estate inc., in charlottesville. “the topography is gentle and parts have some of the most fertile soil in the state.” in fact, she says, in the seven-county area of our readership, orange is second only to albemarle county in year-to-date sales of farms 25 acres or more. “Many of the larger properties are under conservation easements,” she adds. “it’s nice to know that the lands around you will be preserved in perpetuity.” “the Montpelier races are a notto miss- tradition in orange,” declares executive Director Martha strawther. “in orange people say,
‘you might miss christmas, but you don’t miss the races!’” Montpelier, the home of our fourth president, was built in three stages beginning in 1764 with four rooms around a central passage. thirty years later, a second stage involved a sizeable extension. Finally, after being elected president, Madison undertook a major renovation, adding single-story wings onto each side of the house to create a symmetrical exterior. Dolley lived there eight years following Madison’s death in 1836, finally selling Montpelier in 1844. it changed hands several times
before being sold to William duPont in 1901. his daughter, Marion duPont scott, often referred to as america’s “First Lady of horseracing,” was an avid horsewoman and, with her brother William, Jr., created many of the best known race venues in the country—both steeplechase and flat. she launched the Montpelier races in 1929. they became sanctioned in 1934 and today are a premier event on the national steeplechase association’s circuit. scott lived at Montpelier until her death in 1983. her heirs bequeathed the property to the national trust for historic Preservation. the Montpelier hunt races, always the first saturday in november, are great family fun. Most of the seven races are more than two miles long—two races on the flat and five over fences. the gates open at 9:00 a.m., the Jack russell terrier races begin at 10:15 a.m. and children’s stick horse races about 11:15 a.m. Post time for the first horse race is 12 noon and the seventh is usually between 4:30 and 4:45 p.m. gates close at 6:00 p.m. spectators can watch the
horses being saddled and walked in the paddock and viewing is available right at the rail. tailgating is a Montpelier tradition including a light-hearted contest of tailgate delicacies, to be judged this year by chef Jason alley of richmond’s comfort restaurant. Fancy ladies’ hats are also judged. only small propane camping grills are allowed. “We also try to keep glass to a minimum,” says strawther. “Wine is permitted in glass bottles, but we request only beer in cans and no glass wine glasses because if they shatter, the stem is hard to find and dangerous.” For non-tailgaters, crescent city café and grocery will offer delights in the Louisiana cajun and creole tradition. there will be the usual picnic fare of burgers, fries, and kettle corn as well as a Vendor’s row where food and interesting shopping is available. souvenir posters, tee shirts, caps, and sweatshirts will be available in the Montpelier Museum shop tent. each year a special painting is commissioned that is reproduced in the year’s poster. this year’s painting, which will be on display, is a dramatic work by clarice smith, portraying three jumping horses and their riders silhouetted against the Montpelier mansion. smith is described by art critics as intriguing, enigmatic, and reflecting the unique ambience of a particular place. see her work at www.claricesmith.com. the day after the races, members of orange high school’s Junior rotc unit will perform a cleanup patrol, but, adds Director strawther, “our crowd is so respectful that very little trash remains on the grounds and most of it is bagged if it is left here.”
