Upcoming Info Sessions at Piedmont CASA Piedmont CAsA (Court Appointed special Advocates) will offer monthly Information sessions for prospective volunteers beginning December 6, 2012. If you’ve been thinking about serving as a volunteer advocate for abused and neglected children in our community, then plan to attend one of these sessions. Registration is required. The sessions will be held the first Thursday of every month, one at 12:00 p.m. and one at 6:00 p.m. to accommodate peoples’ schedules. The sessions, which will be no longer than an hour in duration, will be held at CAsA offices, located at 818 East High street in Charlottesville. These sessions provide an opportunity for
those interested in volunteering to speak with current volunteers and to learn about the wonderful work being done by CAsA. The process to become a CAsA Volunteer is quite thorough. Prospective volunteers attend an Information session (mandatory), complete an application and interview process, followed by 32 hours of training (which also includes two hours of courtroom observation). Once the training is complete, the volunteers are inducted in a formal ceremony by one of the judges in the 16th Judicial District. CAsA conducts at least two training sessions per year, in spring and fall. No special experience is required to become a CAsA Volunteer. “CAsA Volunteers are ordinary people who do extraordinary things for children,” according to the organization. CAsA Volunteers come from all walks of life, and include people of all ages. Last Fiscal Year, Piedmont CAsA served 213 children whose cases were before the courts of the 16th Judicial District of Virginia due to abuse or neglect by their caregivers. At the beginning of the current Fiscal Year, CAsA was already serving 40 more children than it was the same time last year. Over the past month CAsA has had a waitlist of as many as 22 children, including a newborn and toddlers. For more information visit pcasa. org or call 434.971.7515 to register for the Information session, indicating which session (noon or 6 pm).
Memorial Illumination: A Community Celebration of Life For 21 years Hospice of the Piedmont has conducted a communitywide memorial service at the start of the holiday season, to honor and remember the lives of loved ones. The beautiful, candlelit service is nondenominational and open to the public. This year’s service will be held on Thursday, December 6 at 6:30 p.m. at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 1500 Rio Road East in Charlottesville. The memorial service is open to all throughout the nine counties served by Hospice of the Piedmont. Individuals and families who want to celebrate the life of someone they’ve loved and lost are invited. The Memorial Illumination is not just for those whose loved one died in hospice care. Additionally, for each contribution of $10, a luminary will shine at the ceremony in memory of a loved one. For each light sponsored, Hospice of
the Piedmont will send a personalized card to a designee to notify them of this thoughtful gesture. Donations are not required for attendance; but all gifts sustain the mission and programs provided by Hospice of the Piedmont and are gratefully accepted. After the service, a symbolic light will be lit and remain lit until the New Year begins. This year, for the first time, a luminary workshop for children and teens will be offered to young people grieving the loss of a loved one. The workshop will begin at 5:00 p.m., at Aldersgate United Methodist. Attendees will have an opportunity to customize a luminary to be displayed at the Memorial Illumination service. Advance registration is requested (434-8176900) but attendance is free. For donation information, call 434972-3568 or visit www.hopva.org.

Virginia Gingerbread Christmas Downtown for the Holidays invites residents to join its 9th Annual Gingerbread Competition, December 6 through December 9, at the Omni Hotel, 235 West Main Street. The theme this year is “Houses from the Past, Celebrate 250.” The competition is open to everyone. The mission of Virginia Gingerbread Christmas is “to maintain and grow an established community

If you live in Orange or Nelson counties, there are a number of holiday celebrations practically in your backyard. Bring the whole family to celebrate the holiday season in downtown Orange. The Orange County Holiday Parade will be held on Sunday, December 2 from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. Immediately after the parade, head over to Taylor Park for the Orange Community Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony. For more information, www.visitororangevirginia.com or call 540-672-1653. If you live in Gordonsville, head downtown for the Gordonsville Memorial Tree Lighting on Sunday, December 2 at 5:30 p.m. This annual tree lighting ceremony kicks off the Gordonsville community holiday tradition. Light refreshments are served while a visit from Santa is enjoyed by children young and old at the Exchange Hotel. The community comes together to carol down Main Street from the Exchange Hotel to the Town Hall for the Christmas tree to be lit. The lights on the tree are lit in memory of loved ones that are no longer with us during the holiday season. If you are interested in having a light on the tree or have any questions concerning this festive celebration, contact The Town Clerk at 540-832-2233.

Events at Historic Properties Last, but certainly not least, are all the holiday festivities taking place at three of our most cherished historic properties—Monticello, AshlawnHighland, and Montpelier. One of the great things about visiting historic properties during the holidays is that it gives children a chance to see how Christmas was celebrated when our country was young. They quickly discover to their surprise that it was a far cry from what we do today. During Thomas Jefferson’s time, for instance, holiday celebrations were much more modest than what we do today. Socializing and special food were the focal points of the winter celebrations—not lavish gifts or decorations. One of the ways to become engaged in the historic Christmas is through the Holiday Wreath Workshops held at the Thomas Jefferson Visitor Center and Smith Education Center Theater. These ever-popular workshops, now in their 26th year, produce a gratifying and tangible end product: a beautiful holiday wreath. Join Janet Miller, Lou Hatch and Maggie Stemann Thompson as they lead participants through the process of creating their own wreaths in these three-hour workshops. All
pes found in Jefferson’s own hand to inspire your holiday table. Arrive early to the Museum Shop and leave your items to pick up at the conclusion of your tour. Cost is $75 and reservations are required. Just up the road from Monticello, Ashlawn-Highland will deck the halls from December 3 through 31. Fresh boxwood, fruits, holly and more will adorn the home in the early 19th century style of President
Ashlawn Highland ber 1 from 7:00 to 9:00 a.m. Join in on the festivity and fun during the 3rd annual race. This family-oriented 5k begins at the East Walk of Monticello and ends at the Thomas Jefferson Visitor Center and Smith Education Center. Kids 12 and under can enjoy the Deck the Halls Kids Dash, a quarter mile loop around the West Lawn within the shadows of Monticello. Adults are $30; kids $10. Add $5 for race day registration. Reservations are required. Visit Monticello.
p.m. and 6:00 p.m. on each date. Cost is $45, with reserved tickets required. Holiday Evening Tours are not recommended for children under age 6. Portions of this tour are not handicapped accessible. For a more personal tour, Monticello is offering private house tours on December 14 and December 16 from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Begin your evening with an intimate tour including the third-floor Dome Room. At the conclusion of your tour, sample culinary delights from Jefferson’s time paired with Virginia wine. You will go home with a copy of one of eight reci-
James and Elizabeth Monroe, with a late 19th century emphasis in the Victorian addition. On December 9, Ashlawn-Highland’s skilled crafters will direct a Gingerbread and Lace Ornament Workshop. Each participant in the workshop will be guided through the process of making three Victorian inspired tree decorations. For more information, call 434293-8000 or email info@ashlawnhighland.org. On December 7- 9 at Montpelier in Orange County, you can enjoy centuries of Christmas traditions during the Montpelier Candlelight Tour. There you will be greeted by Dolley Madison and learn about early 19th century Christmas customs while exploring the Madisons’ home by candlelight. See the Madison Dancers perform in the Grand Salon. Linger in the DuPont Gallery, enjoy light refreshments, wine and wassail while enjoying harp music and carolers. Adult advance ticket price (until December 1) is $25. Afterwards it is $35. Children 6 through 14 are $5. Please enter through the Main Gate, park and check-in at the Visitor Center. The Museum Shop will be open. Tours will be held between 4:30 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. For more information, call 540-672-2728, x141.

Insulation
Greens
Up
Your Budget By Joanne DiMaggio
Adding more insulation to your home is the ultimate green home improvement, offering you a quick energy-payback project that is guaranteed to lower your heating and cooling bills. Homes built before 1980 are notorious for not having enough insulation. But starting in 1980, people began talking about energy awareness. Now over 30 years later, you can bring your home’s insulation up to current standards and in the process, save anywhere from 10 to 50 percent on your energy bills. First a brief class in R-ratings. The label on insulation lists the R-value per inch, which is a measure of resistance to heat transfer. The larger the number, the more effective the insulation. The more effective the insulation, the lower your energy bills. Seems simple enough. Insulation types range from that irritating itchy stuff to cushiony pillows made of blue jean fabric—how’s that for “green” insulation! The right type of insulation really depends on what part of the house you’re working on, and whether you’re starting from scratch or doing an upgrade. Insulation material comes in all shapes and sizes. Batts and blankets come in convenient rolls that are easy to carry. This is the type of insulation suitable for do-it-yourself projects, but be careful to cut the material to fit around plumbing pipes and wires. Don’t just stuff it. Fiberglass batts and blankets are widely available in standard widths and thicknesses. They’re ideal for putting between studs, joists, and rafters. Paper- and foil-faced versions have stapling flanges that make insulation easy. The disadvantage is that
it can be itchy to install. You’ll need protective clothing. Phenol formaldehyde, linked to cancer, is being phased out as a binder and warning labels about a possible cancer risk from inhaled fibers also are being phased out because regulators have concluded the fibers break down quickly in lungs. Rock wool batts and blankets are more fire-resistant than fiberglass and they don’t itch. They spring into shape against studs, and installation is staple-free and quick. It has a few disadvantages, however. It is not widely available and it retains moisture so if allowed to get damp it can harbor mold growth. It has a highrecycled content (up to 90 percent), but it also contains crystalline silica so inhaling it over a long term could cause lung disease, including cancer. Cotton batts (aka “blue jeans”) don’t itch and come in easy-to-handle rolls. It’s not widely available, but if you can find it, you’ll have insulation that contains at least 85 percent recycled fiber and needs little additional energy to make. It also contains a borate fire retardant, which deters some insect pests. Let’s look at the places where additional insulation can really make a difference.
Attics Attic insulation can lower heating and cooling costs by as much as
$600 a year and is one of the places where it’s easiest to add. In an unfinished space, simply add layers to what’s already there. If you have the kind of attic that can be finished, put the insulation against the roof. This is a better way to insulate the attic if your heating and cooling ducts pass through the space. For do-it-yourselfers, use the blanket-type material, as that’s easiest to work with. If you’re insulating the roof, sprayed foam polyurethane works best because it molds to rafters, blocks water vapor, and has a high R-rating per inch.
Walls on Main Floors Adding wall insulation will lower energy costs by as much as $130 per year. If you don’t already have insulation, it’s fairly easy to add it in stud bays. If your walls already are insulated, you probably won’t be able to add more without tearing into the drywall or plaster. If you’re remodeling, that’s a good option, but if not, wait until you need to replace the siding and then add insulating sheathing underneath it.
Basements and Crawl Spaces Energy losses of as much as 30 percent happen in the basement and crawl space. Adding insulation can save about $170 per year in heating and cooling costs. You can either insulate under the bottom floor and
Attic insulation can lower heating and cooling costs by as much as $600 a year and is one of the places where it’s easiest to add. treat the crawl space or basement as outdoor space, or insulate the walls and treat the area as indoor space. If you do this, then close off all exterior vents except those needed for combustion air or exhaust. It takes about a third less material to insulate the walls of a 36 x 48 foot basement as it does to insulate the subfloor above. Key here is to place a layer of rigid foam insulation against the foundation to keep moisture from condensing against the cold walls. When you’re ready to finish the basement, you can cover the foam with a stud wall, fill it with unraced fiberglass insulation, and then cover it with drywall.
