Now in its 29th year, First Night Virginia is a beloved local tradition, an afternoon and evening’s worth of family-friendly, alcohol-free New Year’s Eve programs on and around Charlottesville’s Downtown Mall. Boston held the first First Night on December 31, 1975. Charlottesville’s sold out first First Night in 1983, conceived by a recent Boston transplant by the name of Nancy Rudolph, was only the second in the country. In 2011, seventy-five American cities had First Night events, and an estimated 10,000 people thronged the Mall in Cville, most of them for First Night festivities. his crazy gadgets. “ACME is an acronym for The American Company that Makes Everything,” explains squeezebox specialist Susanna Rosen. “We consider our group to be a subsidiary of the ACME company—we’re the division that makes swing.” ACME Swing Mfg. Co. played First Night VA 2008. “It was an unusually cold New Year’s Eve,” Rosen remembers, “but it was nice and hot in there.” They’ll heat up the Omni’s ballroom again at 8:45 and 10:00 p.m. Everyone loves a story, and Jim Gagnon, an Artist in Residence with Albemarle County, tells good ones from round the world. Gagnon and his friends in The Dreamtime Project play African drums, the Australian digeroo, and the Native American flute as they recount ancient myths to inculcate respect for the Earth and teach skills like unity and cooperation. “This year the music and stories will be provided by myself and my dear friend Wendi Sirat,” Gagnon says. “She and I both are in the band for 1000 Faces, a mask theater group in Rappahannock. We will also be featuring some of these beautiful masks worn by dancers. We have some excellent dancers lined up! I am very excited as we have never done this before.” Gagnon and Sirat will present “Music and Stories from Around the World” at 3:00 and 4:15 p.m. at Main Street Arena. Charlottesville’s Greg Howard is a virtuoso on the Chapman Stick, a sort of electric guitar with 12 individually tuned strings that allows him to play several musical parts simultaneously. Howard has appeared on two Dave Matthews Band records. At First Night he’ll play jazz with a group of hometown all-stars: trumpeter John D’earth, African percussionist Darrell Rose, drummer Michael Taylor and flutist Gina Sobel. “Some of my solo music and other ensembles I’ve had in the past have been a bit on the “darker” side of

Van de Castle calls Duane Cassis and Cindy Adams of primary sponsor Carpet Plus “the driving force” behind recent celebrations. “Because of the economic downturn, our attendance figures were showing a decline. That was about the time they came on board and saw that it was a great community thing, taking it on and trying to bring back some of the vibrancy to it.” Van de Castle credits as well “the husband and wife team of Jimmy and Mary with Airflow. All four were really active participants in helping turn this around. We’ve met out sponsorship goal this year.” While some three-dozen local organizations and businesses have made it their business to sustain First Night, many families have made the event a personal tradition, and at least one owes its very existence to it. “We have people that have been to every single First Night since we’ve started,” Van de Castle says. “Different people have different relationships with it.” Like the guy who volunteered one year and talked his future wife into doing the same. “That was their first opportunity to really cross paths. They got married through a relationship with First Night.”

Admission Advance tickets – wristbands, actually - for admission to First Night are $15 for adults and $5 for kids ages 6-15. Family Packs (2 adults, 2 kids) are $35. Prices rise to $18 for adult wristbands and $42 for family packs on December 31st. Kids’ wristbands remain $5. Reserved seats are available in advance for Jason Bishop’s show at the Paramount. “He’s a world-class illusionist,” Van de Castle says. “There is a very good chance that show will sell out early, so if people want to guarantee a seat, it’s an additional four dollar fee. The rest of the venues are first come, first serve. What we encourage people to do is to pick the top three or four events that they would like to go to and get there early.”

Here are 12 low cost solutions to help you stay warm without your money going out the windows!

Turn Down The Thermostat Each degree you lower the thermostat decreases your fuel bill by three percent. If you go from 72 to 68 degrees, it may not make much of a difference in terms of comfort, but

While you’re at it, close the vents and doors in rooms that aren’t in use for long periods of time.

Each square foot of window that you insulate at night saves about one gallon of oil or nearly 1.5 cubic feet of gas a year, which means that insulating curtains pay for themselves in around seven years. Leaving a fireplace flue open when the fireplace is not in use is like having a vacuum hose hooked to your house, sucking the warm air right out the chimney. An open fireplace damper lets the same amount of heated air escape up the chimney as a wide-open 48-inch window. And while you’re at it, install a set of glass fireplace doors. Closing these doors when you go to bed prevents large volumes of heated air in the living space from escaping after the fire has gone out.

Adjust your Water Heater Lower the water heater temperature to 120 degrees and take showers, not baths. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, the average bath consumes up to 25 gallons of hot water, while a five-minute shower uses up much less — only around 10 gallons. Equipping your showers with low-flow showerheads also reduces the consumption of both hot and cold water.

Ceiling Fans Ceiling fans can help bring heated air down to earth, especially in rooms with cathedral or high-sloped ceilings. Set your fan to its lowest speed and make sure the blades are spinning the right direction, which is clockwise in the winter.
