According to the Virginia Landmarks Register, the Courthouse is a polished representative of an important group of Roman Revival courthouses scattered throughout Virginia’s Piedmont region. It was erected in 1838 and follows the standard temple-form format with a properly executed Doric entablature. The Courthouse was heavily damaged by fire in 1979, but the exterior survived intact. The interior has since been restored. The Old Greene County Jail, built in 1838 and located on Court Square in the center of Stanardsville next to the Courthouse, is now the home of the Greene County Historical Society Museum.

he goal of every county in central Virginia is to find a way to safeguard its rural, pastoral aesthetics while attracting non-intrusive businesses to keep its economy thriving. Greene County does this especially well. Listed by Money Magazine as one of the “100 best places to live” and located at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains near Skyline Drive, Greene County is one of the most beautiful counties in the Commonwealth. Greene County was named for Nathanael Greene, one of the most trusted generals of the Revolutionary army and a friend and comrade-in-arms of Washington. The modern history of Greene County began in August 1716. Numerous land grants and birthrights were given to settlers in the 18th century, the most famous of which was made to William Monroe, a farmer and later namesake of several Greene County Schools. The present courthouse stands on land donated in 1838 by Robert Stanard, creating Stanardsville as the County Seat and making it the only incorporated town within the county. The town of Stanardsville itself is both a State and National Historic District. Incorporated in 1794, it was once a stagecoach
room, and more. There is also a Senior Center located below the new PVCC satellite facility in Stanardsville. Woodson has been a lifelong resident of Greene County, so he has been an eyewitness to the population and retail growth in the Ruckersville area. Woodson has been selling real estate since 2005 and says Greene County appeals to buyers for a number of reasons, including its “rural characteristics (i.e. views, farm land), expanding retail amenities, convenient commute access to points north and south.” Currently, there are approximately 150 properties for sale in Greene County. “New construction communities of Wexford, Greenecroft, and Hancock Farms have shared the most success over the past year,” said Woodson. “Other communities like Guilford Farms, Cardinal Forest, and Barrington Place are positioned to make gains in 2013.” Woodson added that over the past year or two, homes price under $200k and new construction above $300k have had the best sales, while existing homes priced above $225 continue to be sluggish. Nonetheless, he has seen an increase in the number of families targeting Greene County as their new home site. “Over the past few years, Greene County has enjoyed sales from relocation of government and government contractor employees to the National Ground Intelligence facility just south of Ruckersville in Albemarle County,” he said. “First time home buyers continue to be a large sector of sales due to the value buyers find in Greene vs. Albemarle County.”

There is no shortage of things to do, places to go, and people to see in and around Greene County. The Greene County Fair in late July/ early August has music, carnival rides, homemade food and craft exhibits, as well as farm animal auctions, great fair food and much more can be enjoyed by the whole family. For history buffs, the annual Battle of Stanardsville Reenactment in September brings the sights and sounds of the Civil War alive in the fields of Greene County. Next comes the annual Chili Cook Off in November, followed by the Parade of Lights down Main Street in Stanardsville over the Christmas holidays.
Parks and Recreation Abound The Greene County Department of Parks & Recreations offers a variety of year-round indoor and outdoor activities. To DIY or Not to DIY When you know how to do a particular project, especially if you’ve done something similar before, and you have the tools and time and patience to do it, go ahead.
No. Some projects are best left to professionals. Any project involving the actual structure of the house such as moving a wall or installing a skylight should only be done by an experienced person. Also be wary of electrical work (which could cause personal injury or a fire if done incorrectly), plumbing work (where a hidden leak could cause damage months later) and projects on the roof or on a high interior ceiling since falls from ladders are a notorious cause of ER visits. In addition, some improperly done projects can result in voiding of warranties or denial of insurance coverage when problems arise. “When you’re dealing with a leak in a wall, replacing a water heater or anything that requires a building permit, a contractor is the way to go,” says O’Melia. The bottom line is that a great many home projects can be done by careful DIYers. O’Melia concludes, “My grandma always said the only thing you can’t do is what you think you can’t do.”
Remember—even if you’re not undertaking a project—you should be familiar with your home. Everyone should know where the whole-house water shut-off is. Know the location of your electrical service panel and have the fuses or circuit breakers clearly labeled. Safety is crucial. Don’t overlook simple practices like wearing safety goggles, donning ear protection when using noisy tools, having extension cords in good condition, and never disabling safety devices on power tools. Homeowners often take the DIY route to save money, but remember that it’s not always cost effective to use cheap supplies. A $14 gallon of paint requiring three coats is not “cheaper” than a $35 gallon that covers in a single application. Trying to do a job with flimsy or incorrect tools also can be frustrating. Buy quality tools from the start and you’ll have them for a lifetime. Often you can rent or borrow specialized tools for a single project. And before all else fails, be sure to read the instructions for any unfamiliar tools. “The most important thing for any project,” O‘Melia emphasizes, “is knowing exactly what has to be done.” Whether it’s installing under-cabinet lighting in your kitchen, repairing a leaking faucet or replacing a door, the
