From print to pixels, from interactive digital downloads and graphic novels to limited edition hand bound booklets and old-fashioned print books, Charlottesville loves literature, and never more so than every March when the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities presents the Virginia Festival of the Book, an annual event designed “to bring together writers and readers and to promote and celebrate books, reading, literacy, and literary culture.” “We got underway thinking that we would do 12 programs,” says VFA

This year’s festival, 207 mostly free readings, talks, and panels by authors, illustrators and publishing professionals, takes place March 20-24 at bookstores, libraries, schools and other venues in and around Charlottesville where reading is practiced. The fun begins as always on Wednesday noon at the Central Branch of the JeffersonMadison Regional Library, in an opening ceremony celebrating the local literary community. Winners of The Hook’s short story competition will read from their work. Winners of the Virginia Letters About Literature competition for kids will read letters to their favorite authors, and longtime festival volunteers Nancy Brockman, Mildred Spicer, and Jean Wilhelm will be honored.

Personal History, World History Wednesday at the Village School at 4:00 p.m., memoirists Patricia Ford Copper (A Father’s Love), Dubois Miller (Ten on Tin), and Proal Heartwell (Goronwy and Me) will discuss important figures and places in their lives. “Goronwy and Me tells the story of Goronwy Owen (1723 - 1769), a Welsh poet and clergyman who spent the last dozen years of his life in Virginia,” says Hartwell, the cofounder and co-director of Village School, a middle school for girls in Charlottesville. “During the course of the narrative, I explore the intersections between my own life and that of the exiled bard.” Robert Louis Wilken taught the history of Christianity at UVa from 1985 to 2009 and has written over a dozen books on the subject. His latest volume, The First Thousand Years: A Global History Christianity, examines how “a community that was largely invisible in the first two centuries of its existence” went on to “remake the civilizations it inhabited, culturally, politically, and intellectually.” Wilken

Earlier at the Bridge, in The Ties That Bind: Family in Fiction on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m., authors Wendy Shang, Lydia Netzer, Camisha Jones, Mollie Cox Bryan will talk about family relationships in their work, and examine the influence of Amy Tan’s bestselling novel The Joy Luck Club. The program will be presented in conjunction with The Big Read, the National Endowment for the Arts initiative “to revitalize the role of literature in American culture and to encourage citizens to read for pleasure and enlightenment.” Charlottesville is one of 78 American communities to receive a grant for Big Read programs this year. The JeffersonMadison Regional Library is encouraging Central Virginia residents to read and discuss The Joy Luck Club this March. “In the 21st Century, you are in trouble if you can’t read,” says JMRL Director John Halliday, himself the author of two young adult novels, PredicKtions and Shooting Monarchs. “That is why schools and libraries are more important than ever. ecycling is a great habit. This is reprocessing of an item into “new” materials to use for a new product, such as plastic bottles into fabric for garments, tires and glass incorporated into roadways and aluminum cans reborn into, well, aluminum cans. Wait! There are many other uses for recycled aluminum. It takes about five percent as much energy to recycle aluminum as in the initial production and the International Aluminum Institute estimates that more than 75 percent of the aluminum manufactured worldwide is still in circulation, reappearing in cars, boats, electric cable, siding, windows, gutters and much more. Nevertheless, recycling still means considerable expenditure of energy to move and process the materials. Taking the next step—into deliberate reusing and repurposing—is even better. Reuse is different from recycling. It decreases hazardous waste and keeps things out of the waste stream, which saves on fuel for trash trucks and reduces the need for disposal sites which can pollute the air and water and eat up wildlife habitats. Reuse also means less demand for raw materials, such as wood, iron, and petroleum, which are expensive to lumber, mine, and drill.

Simply put, reusing and repurposing can extend the life of many things. And it is usually kind on the family budget. On a large scale it means converting Charlottesville’s former Martha Jefferson Hospital into a variety of new uses. On a personal scale, people can convert an old firehouse, barn or church into a dwelling. On a much smaller scale it might mean turning a wobbly table into a toy chest or even reusing that piece of aluminum foil a couple times before putting it in the trash to be recycled.

Benefits of Becoming a Re-User

When you repurpose items in your home, it announces that you are concerned with our planet. And it can lead to an interesting home as well. Repurposing could be as simple as bending unmatched flatware into coat hooks or as clever as converting an old window into a glass-topped coffee table displaying a collection of shells, thimbles or autographed baseballs. The best way to become a reuser is to start when you obtain an item. If you are buying new, research your purchase to buy wisely designed items that are well built with low maintenance and repair. One simple example is to buy reusable water containers for everyone in the family rather than constantly purchasing water in plastic bottles. Other ideas: convert the kids’ outgrown “little red

wagon” into mobile garden tool stowage or use Aunt Shirley’s fancy mirror as the door for your medicine cupboard. An even better tactic is not to buy new. Check Craig’s List, a Habitat for Humanity Resale store or local thrift shops for everything from dishes, dog houses and baby clothes to vehicles, sinks, furniture and paint. Some upscale consignment shops stock designer clothing, home accessories or furniture where you can buy a once-worn party dress for a fraction of its original price or sturdy, solid-wood furniture, often for the price of far-less-durable you-assemble-it items. The Internet can provide some engaging repurposed ideas. One site, for instance, shows a fancy old side table cut in half with the cut side against the wall of a foyer. It could be painted to match the walls or to accent a wall covering or refinished to show an interesting wood grain. Another site suggests twenty things to do with old books including making a “book safe” (paint page edges with white glue and hollow out the middle) or using pages as wallpaper. A great “find” can lead to some brainstorming sessions. Say you find an irresistible church pew at a yard sale and now it’s taking up space in the garage because it is too big. What can you do with it? Cut out the center section to make it smaller? Use the carved ends to make a buffet? Turn it on end

and add shelves to make a bookcase? What could you do with that fancy mirror you “inherited” when your folks moved to a retirement place? Use it as a picture frame? Reinforce it as a serving tray? Fasten it to your medicine cupboard to accent the bathroom? Finally, when it is time to dispose of something, don’t automatically add it to your trashcan. Often items can be sold via the Internet, a yard sale or a consignment store. People also can donate to local thrift stores to support local charities and some non-profits will pick up large items. And if you offer something for free, you usually find someone who wants it. Old tomato cages, doghouses, tables, brokendown computer printers—the list is amazing. A repurposing lifestyle can become a habit that is kind to your budget and can give your home some real personality. ■ When Marilyn Pribus and her husband decided to pave the short steep gravel driveway of their home, the paving company wanted $150 to haul the gravel to the landfill. Instead, she offered it free on Craig’s List and seven different people came to carry it away. The last person even borrowed a broom to get up the final bits of gravel the seller had used to conceal a deteriorated paved driveway.
