Wild Virginia is proud to be hosting for the fourth consecutive year the Wild and Scenic Film Festival “On Tour.” The festival spans two evenings and two venues in two cities: Tuesday, April 16 at 7:30 p.m. in Charlottesville at the Dickinson Fine & Performing Arts Center at Piedmont Virginia Community College, and Thursday, April 18 at 7:00 p.m. at the Visulite Cinema in Staunton. Tickets are $10 each night. There will be an entirely different slate of films at each venue. The Wild and Scenic Film Festival brings together a selection of films that tell stories about our planet, our beautiful and precious wildlands, and the people of the communities who love them, play in them and defend them. They open our eyes and hearts to fantastic experiences in remarkable places. They inspire a sense of wonder, beckon us towards action, highlight issues, and provide solutions. The Charlottesville show will feature a series of short films, including Seeds of Freedom, which challenges the myth that large-scale, industrial agriculture is the only means by which we can feed the world; Last Light which photographs the breathtaking beauty of Alaska’s steepest mountains and the people who ride them; and Tailings, about uranium mining in New Mexico.

During the meal, community members make short presentations about their creative projects in need of funding. Attendees participate in a dialogue about the proposals over a nourishing meal with ingredients donated by the Local Food Hub in handmade bowls by local artists from City Clay. Then, each attendee will enter a voting booth built to choose one project to fund with the money raised from the meal that night. They will award the grant to the winner of the most votes right away. Consider SOUP an experiment in civic engagement and a chance to play a role in supporting creativity in our community. The first ever Charlottesville SOUP took place on January 14, 2013 at The Bridge Progressive Arts Initiative. A grant of $1,045 was awarded to the Charlottesville Textile Cooperative, which used the funds to buy a loom. The first event sold out and they had to turn away more than 200 people at the door. Anyone with a creative project in the arts that can be shared with Charlottesville in some way is encouraged to submit a proposal. Proposals for the next SOUP are due on Wednesday, April 24. The application is available at www.charlottesvillesoup.com. Similar efforts are taking place around the country. Charlottesville SOUP was inspired by Kate Daughdrill, a former resident of Charlottesville who helped found The Garage and went on to start Detroit SOUP. The idea was originally taken from InCUBATE (“a research group dedicated to exploring new approaches to arts administration and arts funding”), which started the idea in Chicago. SOUP is officially hosted by New City Arts. Support generously provided by City Clay, Festive Fare, Charlottesville Day School, Local Food Hub, Greenies, Tami & Michael Keaveny, Olivia Branch, and The Haven. Home & Garden event, which will be held Friday, April 12, through Sunday, April 14, at the University of Virginia’s John Paul Jones Arena. JPJ is an ideal venue with plenty of parking and space for exhibits. “We changed the name from ‘Show’ to ‘Festival’ to add some pizzazz and reflect that it’s fun for the whole family,” declares Troy Yancey, owner of T.E.A.L. Construction and chair of this year’s event. An Albemarle County native, he explains that the Festival serves three functions. “First,” he says, “we want to show the public that the BRHBA is the face of the local building industry. Two, we want to show what products are new to the market and what trends are popular. And three, we want to allow the public to interface with local builders.” The Home & Garden Festival is always a marvelous gallery of new ideas from homebuilders, remodeling contractors and others with innovative products and services. There’s plenty of information for DIYers—those DoIt-Yourself people—especially focusing on ways to cut energy costs. Talking with various exhibitors about specific home projects always yields helpful pointers and guidance. For those not

inclined to pick up a hammer or wrench, there’s a chance to compare products and services from neighbors, since the majority of the booths will feature businesses in our area of Central Virginia. Brand new this year is a charming “Garden Walk” area on the main concourse of the arena. Visitors have the opportunity to see more than 130 exhibitors. There are always trends in building and remodeling and this is definitely the place to see what’s on the horizon. “Right now, national, state and local trends are about renovating kitchens, bathrooms and closets,” says Yancey. “People remove a wall to make a walk-in closet or steal a hallway closet that’s hardly used. Home energy audits are also very popular.” In response, exhibitors will be mounting exhibits ranging from flooring to roofing, insulation, paint, lighting, countertops and other kitchen items, windows, doors, closet organizers and appealing growing things in the nursery exhibits. As usual, there will be emphasis and plenty of information on “green” ideas that will appeal to both new and existing homeowners.

This year will be the first time at the Home & Garden Festival for van der Linde Recycling. “Our parent company, van der Linde Homes, was a regular exhibitor in the past,” explains company spokesperson Andrea Johnson, “however this will be the first show for van der Linde recycling and Container Rentals.” Their “monster” recycling machine has recovered thousands of tons of material that would have otherwise gone into a landfill. Some of these products are sold to manufacturers, while others—such as mulch and recycled gravel—are sold directly to local consumers. “We take environmental stewardship very seriously,” Johnson continues. “It is something that we work towards on a daily basis. We will be selling two colors of our mulch at the show. These are two of five products we make at our facility and the profits go directly back to our mission to keep quality material out of landfills.” After several years’ absence, Allied Concrete Company is again an exhibitor. Concrete, in a variety of forms, ends up in projects ranging from foundations for structures to floors to coun-
system with fresh air intake,” explains festival chair Yancey whose own construction company earned a 2011 EarthCraft Contractor of the Year award for 2010 projects in seven states. He’s also proud that, for the past three years, BRHBA has been named EarthCraft Virginia’s Association of the Year. “We take the green certification very highly and respect what it stands for,” Yancey adds. As an example, he points out that the first EarthCraft light commercial project to be certified north of Atlanta is the Triple C Camp. A popular day camp located off Scottsville Road about five miles south of I-64, Triple C is also available most weekends for youth organizations, company or sport team picnics, birthday parties and even weddings.

tertops. Founded back in 1945, locally owned Allied has three locations in central Virginia, specializing in concrete, masonry and hardscaping. “When we say hardscape,” explains Cliff Diaz, an Allied hardscape sales rep, “we mean landscaping that involves natural stone and also manufactured stone like pavers and retaining wall blocks—anything that involves manmade or natural stone.” Diaz emphasizes that stone can be environmentally friendly, especially in areas where paving isn’t desirable like a particularly large driveway. In these cases, permeable pavers and stone can let water seep through rather than end up as runoff. “Our exhibit will have hardscape products,” he continues. “It’s going to have a retaining wall with mulch behind it and a waterfall into a small pond.” Allied will be offering brochures as well as some sort of giveaways. As usual, the Home & Garden Festival is focusing strongly on exhibitors who can help visitors to “go green.” One such idea provider is repeat exhibitor EarthCraft Virginia, which supports a voluntary green building certification program specific to our region’s climate. An EarthCraft House isn’t a particular building brand, but rather a home or other building that

shop of what to do, whom to consult and how to pay for improvements to make their dwelling more efficient with the resulting lower long-term energy costs. “The Home & Garden Festival showcases Habitat’s mission of building homes, neighborhoods and community,” explains Caitlin Riopel, Store Operations Manager for the Charlottesville Habitat resale store. “It communicates the availability of a place to shop that reuses furniture, building supplies and other items as a source for low-cost ways to alter or spruce up your home. It also publicizes the Store’s important involvement in that mission by showing a community engagement opportunity and recruiting new volunteers, donors, and customers.” The Habitat resale store is an excellent place to purchase new and previously used furniture, building supplies, and other items ranging from windows and carpeting to lighting, plumbing fixtures, tile, paint and much more. Donations are always welcomed. “If you are remodeling or cleaning out your attic, this is place to donate your used belongings and materials,” Riopel adds. “The proceeds benefit an important local cause.”
Seminars Offered The seminars offered at the Home & Garden Festival are always popular. They offer time for visitors to learn more about specific topics and ask experts some specific questions. There are a number of topics and times and presentations generally last about 45 minutes. Topics range from Residential Energy Efficiency 101 and Energy Efficient Lighting Options to Heat Pumps and Geothermal Pumps. These seminars are not repeated, so if you have particular interests, be sure to check the times and locations as soon as you enter the JPJ arena. In addition, youngsters will enjoy the traditional Treasure Hunt with prizes. There are always live demos and JPJ has a food court for snacks or a meal. Many of the vendors offer incentives for attendees, which just might give you the nudge to move forward with a project you’ve been thinking about. Look for exclusive Show discounts on products. You’ll also find plenty of ways to take ideas home with you. Many vendors have brochures, mini-magazines and catalogs packed with illustrations, specifications and suggestions about their specific products.
And finally, be absolutely sure to enter the drawings for some great door prizes. The Home & Garden Festival will run from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Saturday and from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets are $5 at the door and children under twelve are free when accompanied by an adult. Senior Sunday offers seniors $1 discount. Parking—1100 spaces in the surface lot and garage right next to JPJ—is free. ■

BE A HERO! There’s no question that donating blood is a heroic act making anyone who donates blood a hero, says Virginia Blood Services. This year the BRHBA is sponsoring a Virginia Blood Services Blood Drive during the Home & Garden Festival from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday. The VBS Bloodmobile will be stationed outside the John Paul Jones Arena and donors will receive free admission to the Festival and, while supplies last, a Community Heroes tee shirt. Whether you are a regular donor or a first-timer this is an excellent opportunity to be a community hero by donating blood that will help save lives right here in our community. Virginia Blood Services provides blood service to hospitals and dialysis centers through central Virginia. We are very fortunate to live in a region where sophisticated medical and transplant programs are available and these programs require many donations. Only about a third of the population is eligible to donate—there are restrictions because of age, medical history and other factors—and of those, only about ten percent actually donate, so the need is great. Walk-ins are always welcome or you can make an appointment by contacting Jessica at Jessica.Ammons@ ferguson.com. Remember, all donors must present their VBS donor card or a valid government ID such as a driver’s license, military ID, or passport. A credit card, school or work ID is also acceptable when registering to donate. Visit vablood. org for more information.

The Switch to Solar
Realtor and solar consultant Roger Voisinet displays an example of solar thermal panels, or solar water panels.
Panels for both solar thermal (water) and heat are installed upon this Virginia homeowners roof. The three solar thermal cells are in the center surrounded by multiple solar photo voltaic heating cells.
Once the savings potential is determined, a homeowner can opt to go for a more detailed energy assessment and can decide to make changes oneby-one or all at once. When the changes add up to a 20 percent or better savings, homeowners earn a Home Performance with Energy Star certificate for the home. Guidelines for the HPES program are set by the U.S. Department of Energy to make homes more energy efficient, said Fiori.
“They are tailored for the most energy savings,” she said. Initial recommendations of the LEAP program might include insulating the attic hatch, using an attic stairs tent, using honeycomb and pleated blinds, both which reduce temperature transfers when the sun is shining or during long, cold winter nights. “These are do-it-yourself items that are affordable,” said Fiori. Both experts agree that sealing the home with better insulation such as

ecent news stories about global warming have many people considering a switch from traditional power to heat and cool their homes to more conservationfriendly solar energy. But it is the decreases in cost that actually has some people performing the changes. So says Roger Voisinet, a solar consultant and real estate agent since the late 1970s. “There has always been some solar,” he said. “It started in the 1960s to 1970s with professional businesses.” That was when Voisinet had his busy Charlottesville business, Virginia Solar Contracting Services, at the end of the ‘70s, when federal tax credits were 40 percent and Virginia offered another 20 percent, during the Carter presidency. The solar boon at that time included conversions to solar thermal (water) and solar heating. During the Reagan years, tax credits were scrapped and the solar industry once again became financially restrictive to many middle class homeowners. For example, Voisinet’s client, Jiffy Clean Car Wash, paid $30,000 to install solar in the mid-1980s. Today, “solar water heating is the smartest way to use solar,” said Voisinet. “Solar electric is more expensive and not as cost efficient.” For homeowners today, that equates to about $8,000 to $10,000 for solar thermal and from $18,000 to $25,000 for solar electric. To get the most savings from the investment, home preparation is key. “The first step to consider is to make the home as energy efficient as possible,” said Laura Fiori, a residential energy manager for the Local Energy Alliance Program in Charlottesville. “Then choose a solar system based on your reduced energy needs.” LEAP has a program that will help homeowners do just that: During a one-hour walk-through, LEAP staff will determine a home’s potential to save energy. Comfort problems and indoor air quality concerns can be addressed during the assessment. “The assessment will show how much a house is breathing, or leaking,” Fiori said. “And it’s only a matter of degrees between both.”
weather stripping or caulking around bath/kitchen fans, duct work and recessed lighting help to reduce losses in paid-for heating or cooling. Making the suggested do-it-yourself changes can increase energy efficiency in the home by 20 percent or more, which is why it is important to do before installing renewables. Voisinet also recommends conservation lighting such as the new LEDs, which reduces wattage used and waste heating affecting air conditioning. New and current federal tax credits (30 percent with no cap) are available through 2016 to install solar and other renewables. Plus a partnership between LEAP and the University of Virginia Community Credit Union now provides low-cost loans for energy efficiency improvements and renewable energy installations. “It’s very exciting to have the PowerSaver loan available in our area,” Fiori said. A benefit to homeowners going through the LEAP program, other than energy savings, is that if a homeowner should decide to sell the home later, the real estate multiple-listings service has a checkbox to indicate the home has been through the HPES program. Homes can be searched via this indicator. Another benefit recently in the news, which will be available to some homeowners, is the Dominion Virginia Power’s Solar Purchase Program, approved by the Virginia State Corporation Commission, will purchase energy from qualified solar installations and sell it back to these same solar generators at a lower price, akin to what they pay currently. Applications for this program will start being taken June 20 online, on a first-come, firstserved basis. New home solar installations should excite lenders: On March 19 of this year, the University of North Carolina and the Institute for Market Transformation found that the risk of mortgage default is one-third lower for Energy Star labeled homes and recommends that lenders consider the information when underwritings mortgage loans, especially for Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and FHA financing. For some buyers, “It’s not just the purchase price that is important, but how much it will cost to operate the home,” Fiori said. ■
