T

he Crozet Arts and Crafts Festival, one of the most awaited events of the year, showcases not only artisans from all over the country and beyond its borders, but also highlights the community of Crozet and the many benefits that exist for residents in that part of Albemarle County. The twice yearly festivals began 33 years ago as a small endeavor and have grown with the community. They serve to fund the growth and upkeep of Crozet’s Claudius Crozet Park.

Since 1958, the 22-acre park has been a centerpiece for the Crozet community. The park has beautiful views of the Blue Ridge Mountains and is a recreational facility open to all. Crozet community members pride themselves in providing a beautiful setting for families to gather for various activities and sporting events. Facilities include a one-acre lake, a large outdoor community pool and features year-round swimming. The park’s new partners are the on-site YMCA and sports played in the park—soccer, baseball and T-ball, youth tennis. To facilitate other activities there is a large picnic pavilion and two playgrounds. Trail building around and connected to the park,

courtesy of the Crozet Trails Crew, is continuing and will link Claudius Crozet Park to many other areas around town. One new aspect to the festival this year is its new director, Leslie Burns, who took the reins from former director Tracy Pugh last December. “Tracy was a miracle worker,” said Burns. “She ran the festival on her own for seven years.” John Updike, a REALTOR with the Roy Wheeler Realty office in Old Trail, said the same thing. “Tracy had a good business plan and grew it very well. people who move here,” he said. “They have the festival two times a year, on Mother’s Day weekend and again in the fall when the foliage is coming out.” Burns, who has her Master’s degree in fine arts, is a watercolorist but also works in oils. But she calls herself a sustainable designer. In fact, she’s living in the Crozet Baptist Church parsonage with her mom and the two of them have been redesigning the interior over the past few years. “In one respect with the festival, it’s an opportunity to bring in the whole community to celebrate the area,” she said, “They love it and think it’s beautiful here.” Her other idea is to make the festival a way to tell others just what Crozet is, from the arts and wineries to agriculture. “With Crozet growing as it is, it’s about how we can maintain our small town feel and bridge the gap between the old-timers and the newcomers.” That small town feel is the reason Burns said why many people move to the area.

“A restaurant/skybar concept will be going up in Crozet, as well as other commercial construction,” he said. “It looks like they are trying to replicate the Downtown Mall on a smaller scale and this should enhance the character and charm of Crozet.” Crozet will soon even have its own hotel, Updike said. “A 46-room hotel is due to go in next to The Lodge at Old Trail (senior apartment living) and should complement the Old Trail Village nicely. It’ll be next door to the Lodge at Old Trail that has 110 apartments and opened in September 2012. Old Trail is one of the most successful neighborhoods in Albemarle.” Another new development at the Crozet Art Festival will be the first-ever guided painting lessons to get participants in touch with their inner artist and produce a piece of personal artwork and when they leave the guided art tent, participants will have a Virginia-themed painting to hang at home. Three class sessions will be held each day of the festival and one adult admission to the festival is included with each lesson. The first session, for children 7-12 years old, is one hour and each child must be accompanied by a responsible adult who must be present for the entire class. The second two classes last

More Fowl Play: “Lark for The Arc V” David White, Director of Special Projects for The Arc of the Piedmont, wants you to join him in “taking the fifth,” i.e., making The Arc’s “Lark for The

Arc V” spring fundraiser, the biggest and best yet. This is how it works: the Albemarle Spring Bird Count will take place on Saturday May 11, and White is proposing that folks make a taxdeductible donation to The Arc based on each species that he identifies during that day-long activity. White will spend the day traversing Albemarle County trying to find birds both common and not-so-common, all in the interest of adding to the county’s bird lore as well as to the coffers of The Arc of the Piedmont, a 501-c-3 charitable organization which provides advocacy, education and direct services to people with intellectual disabilities and developmental disabilities. As White states, “Each species of bird has its characteristic colors, habits and songs; so, too, do the people we support at The Arc have their own feelings, emotions, ways of expressing themselves and other unique characteristics which identifies each of them as a person and a personality.” With a goal of 75 species identified, a $1 per species pledge would equate

to a $75 donation to The Arc; 60 species would equate to $60, and so on. Any pledge or gift amount, based on the count or not, will be appreciated and will assist The Arc in its quest to offer the people that they support “a life like yours,” and that would be something to crow about! White will circulate a listing of all species identified to each supporter, as well as a receipt for their records. Ten Green Spring Cleaning and Reorganizing Tips

Green Cleaners Since the EPA doesn’t require manufacturers to list every ingredient in a household cleaner, it’s hard to know exactly what you’re buying. Look for supplies that are plant-based and fragrance-free. Products that don’t test on animals are a plus, as are ones that are biodegradable and biocompatible. You can buy green cleaners at local natural foods stores, or better yet, make your own! When combined, common household items like baking soda, lemon juice, vinegar and club soda are great for cleaning everything from carpets to toilets. Recipes for homemade cleaners are easily found online.

Don’t use Paper Towels Here’s a sobering statistic. In 2004, Americans threw away 83,000 tons of disposable towels. Save trees, cash and landfill waste by buying specially made, washable cleaning cloths. Better yet, use what you already have, such as stained towels, old sheets and pillowcases, T-shirts, etc. Cut them into small squares and toss them in your washer to clean and use again and again. Switch the Swiffer sweeper for a broom and the disposable mop for a reusable one.

Spruce Up With EcoFriendly Paint

Some houseplants—like Boston ferns, English ivy, rubber plants, Spider plants, and peace lilies—absorb toxic chemicals and thereby clean your indoor air. To do a whole house (averaging 1,800 square feet), you’ll need 15-18 medium size (6-8 inch diameter container) houseplants. As an alternative, place a few plants in the room where you spend the most time.

Household paint typically contains 300 toxic chemicals. Some of the most hazardous are volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that release toxins into the air for as many as six years after application. Yikes! Some VOCs contribute to smog and indoor air pollution, and can cause a host of short- and long-term health problems. When it’s time to paint, either inside or out, choose low-VOC paint. They’re water-based and because they aren’t made with toxins they don’t smell. Chances are they’re available in your favorite colors.
