River Run Farm c. 1913 River Run Farm contains 241 acres, including approximately 120 in fenced pasture and hayfield. The remaining acreage is hardwood forest. Well watered by streams and more than a mile of frontage on free-flowing North Fork Rockfish River, the farm is currently used for beef production. Surrounded by Blue Ridge Mountain views, the late Victorian home has been meticulously restored and improved. Four bedrooms, with five full baths, gracious entertaining spaces and a 1998 family room addition make River Run Farm a highly livable property. Additional farm improvements include a manager’s residence, a five-bay equipment shed and a 60 x 80 barn currently used for hay storage. Former National Public Radio host Alex Chadwick will interview Richard Misrach at the Paramount June 14 at 10:00 a.m. Misrach produces large scale color shots that Owen credits with having “reintroduced color into landscape photography over the last 30-40 years.” Misrach’s most recent project, on view at McGuffey Arts Center, documents the nightmarish visual transformation of the lower Mississippi river by the petrochemical industry. “His photographs depict the juxtaposition of historic artifacts of the landscape with the current, nonhuman industrial wasteland of refineries and chemical plants,” Owen says. By way of demonstration, Misrach enhances each photograph with the help of New York landscape architect, Kate Orff—a University of Virginia graduate—superimposing topographic maps, graphs and illustrations. Chadwick will interview Gregory Crewdson at the Paramount June 15 at 5:00 p.m. A professor at Yale, Crewdson brings cinematic techniques to his photography work, using film crews with production and photography designers, producers and actors to produce elaborately staged, large-scale, emotionally charged and disturbing images. “He will take over a small town in western Massachusetts,” Owen says, “and create this eerie, Hitchcock-ian scene, sort of a suburban nightmare fantasy without being bloody or gruesome at all. His photographs play on the suspense of a pregnant moment where the stage is set for something significant about to happen.” Six more photographers, Josef Koudelka, Susan Meiselas, Michael Nichols, Martha Rosler, and Carrie Mae Weems will be interviewed in separate conversations Thursday through Saturday, June 13-15.
Gregory Crewdson
Shots and Works While the conversations and accompanying slide shows at the Paramount will provide in depth looks at the work of individual photographers widely hailed for their excellence, each two-hour Shots and Works presentation at the nTelos Wireless Pavilion will show 40 to 50 multimedia essays—either short films or narrated slideshows—by contemporary photographers working in photojournalism, fashion, and fine art. Twenty different artists will be represented each night.
Owen is proud of the “really democratic” selection process for Shots and Work shows. “It’s important to us that people feel open and included in the festival, so we have our curators reach out to lots of different industry professionals and editors across the country and in Europe to recommend exemplary new photo projects that we want to turn into short, five-minute films.” Lisa Kereszi’s Haunted examines haunted houses in the not-so-terrifying light of day. Young men in Brooklyn reject gang activity for a narrative street
Susan Meiselas dance called Flexing in Deidre Schoo’s and Michael Beach Nichols’ Flex is Kings. The all-prisoner acting company Compagnia della Fortezza is a healing force at Italy’s maximum-security Volterra Prison in Clara Vannucci’s Crime & Redemption. American war photographer Peter van Agtmael takes to the road to sort through his conflicted feelings about his country in The Way Back. Shots and Works will be held Friday and Saturday at 9:00 p.m. Friday’s show is free and open to the public. Tickets for Saturday’s show are $10.

Education Week Shots and Works shows innovative work; Education Week offers professional help making it. Festival pass holders can sign up for a limited number of 20-minute portfolio reviews by this year’s guest photographers, and choose four of six courses on a range of professional and creative topics. Marketing Photos blogger Mary Virginia Swanson will address fundraising and sponsorship for long-term photo projects. Alex Chadwick and Syracuse Univer-
sity Associate Professor Bruce Strong will demonstrate how to blend sound and images to tell stories. Aperture Foundation Senior Editor Denise Wolff will talk about putting together a great photography book. Senior National Geographic photo editor Pamela Chen will speak on curating content across multiple online platforms. San Francisco Bay-based photographer Todd Hido will discuss defining a photographic vision and crafting projects, using his LOOK3 continued on pg. 21

own career as a case study. Three NYC-based industry experts including Jessie Wender, an associate photo editor at The New Yorker, will share their experiences working with magazines, design firms and galleries. Pass holders who want technical instruction can take two classes on the popular digital photo software program Adobe Lightroom.
For Everyone Working together with LOOK3, many downtown galleries and coffee shops bring the festival spirit to people who don’t buy admission to the main events. “We’ve been keen to make the community feel included and welcomed,” Owen says, “specifically with the outdoor installations; and all the galleries are free and open to the public. The entire downtown in June is photography month.” Area photo buffs, including members of the Charlottesville Camera Club, will show their own work at downtown galleries and coffee shops in conjunction with the festival. Owen estimates that the program brochure will list “probably 10-15 local photography shows.” Club member John Mitchell has attended every LOOK3 festival but one, and considers it an honor to have ten photos on display at Angelo Jewelry on the Mall during this year’s event. Mitchell volunteered his services as a photographer to Shenandoah National Park for fifteen years, but his own work, “drawn from everyday life,” shows other interests: “color, structure, odd and sometimes humorous juxtapositions,” and the color red. Angelo displays work by Central Virginia artists throughout the year,
devoting each May and June to photography, in conjunction with the festival. Local shutterbugs who don’t have their own shows this June can have their work printed and displayed in the Your Space gallery at City Space, the city-owned meeting room on the Mall run by Piedmont Council for the Arts. Your Space will be “a living gallery,” in Owen’s words, “that builds over the three days.” LOOK3 sold some 3,000 tickets last year, including 1,100 three-day passes, 80 percent of which were purchased by out-of-town visitors. What visitors find is a compact, cosmopolitan city space that enhances the communal nature of the event they’ve come for. “I’ve been to other photo festivals in this country and in Europe, and the most successful ones are the ones that remove distractions,” Owen says. “Having to get into a car and drive across town to attend a party, and then get into another car and go back to an event really disrupts the flow and your ability to sink into the experience.” Because LOOK3 takes place in venues within a few handsome blocks of each other, “you stay all day; you constantly see the same people and you see so many friends and colleagues, it can be really rewarding to say, ‘Hey I’ll catch up with you later,’ and actually be able to find that person.” And because LOOK3 doesn’t “double book” many of its programs, Owen notes, “everybody experiences the same shows at the same time. We sort of move en masse together as opposed to making people choose between this artist and that artist.”
See and Stay “Oh, if I could just move to Charlottesville,” visiting festivalgoers tell Owen—festivalgoers like former
New Englander Justin Ide and his wife Susan Jackiewicz. Ide remembers being “really impressed with the place and the vibe the whole area had” when he first came to town in 2008 as a staff photographer at Harvard for a week of professional development. A foodie as well as a photographer, Ide loves “the city type of atmosphere of downtown Charlottesville with the restaurants and such, combined with the rural, more quiet nature of where we live in Free Union, a short 25 minute drive away. We’ve really fallen hard for the area. Now that we’ve been here a year I can’t imagine leaving, and best of all my wife feels the same way.” Owen understands. Growing up in Charlottesville, he saw the Downtown Mall “transformed from a sleepy, kind of empty pedestrian corridor into the thriving cultural heart of the city, even of the region. He credits Live Arts theater company, the Virginia Film Festival, and other local arts organizations with being “immensely impactful in terms of changing the culture and livability of downtown, and just putting Charlottesville on the map.” Piedmont Council for the Arts hopes to further that positive change, drawing on the expertise of area arts groups as it works on Create Charlottesville, a plan to be released in September intended to “help community stakeholders prioritize and strategically respond to needs and opportunities in the area’s cultural sector.” LOOK3, says Owens, is just one part of “a big effort from all kinds of organizations to make Charlottesville a cultural destination for outof-towners and a much more loveable and enjoyable place for residents.” For tickets and information about the 2013 LOOK Charlottesville Festival of the Photograph, go to www.look3.org. ■

he FBI says a home is burgled every 15 seconds. Police only catch one out of 10 burglars. The U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics show U.S. households experience about 16 million property crimes annually. Burglaries result in over $4.5 billion in losses annually resulting in over $2,000 in losses to the victims. The National Burglar and Fire Alarm Association determined property crime averages above 75 percent of all crime and despite 2 million homes being burgled every year, the Justice Department says that burglaries have declined over the past 30 years. So says the web site, RobertSiciliano. com, owned by Robert Siciliano, personal security expert with BestHomeSecurityCompanys.com/. Siciliano’s expertise and knowledge on security measures of all types have been tapped by many a media source, including the Today show, Good Morning America, Fox News, CNN, ABC News and many more. Not only have news services enlisted his assistance, but so too have banking organizations,
many which have testimonials, posted on his site. Still, with staggering numbers of advocates of his security prowess posted for the general public to see, he says there are still many consumers who will not heed the advice. “Most people deny they can be chosen for crimes,” he said. “They mistakenly believe it can’t happen to them. The statistics and studies show that 80 percent of people will be the victim of a crime in their lifetime. There are millions of break-ins occurring annually.” This is because most homeowners are reactive rather than proactive in his opinion. It’s only after something happens that people decide it is time to do something to prevent security breaches. Nest Realty REALTOR® Marjorie Adam believes slightly differently, that security is purely a personal choice based on various factors, of which a person’s level of comfort is primary. “I have some clients who are surprised when they look at homes and find a security system in it,” she said, “And others who are not. The value
of an added security system depends upon a buyer and that can vary one from another.” To one buyer, a home with an additional security system, finds it adds value to a prospective home purchase. To others who are not interested or don’t find the necessity, an added system is of no value, she says. “There is no percentage differential,” said Adam. “But people do need to pay attention and be smart.” Adam and Siciliano both recommend very low-cost ideas to try rather than doing absolutely nothing. Their basic prevention measures include: • Locking windows and doors. Siciliano said it took him years to get his own father to heed this idea. • Turn on lights, TVs sporadically. Adam said that remote controls exist that enable homeowners to do these important little tasks remotely.
• Lock your car, even in good weather.
“People should research their options, if they feel the need,” Adam said. “Do what you can to protect yourself.” But for those people who might want more security, Siciliano said price shouldn’t be an option. “Security systems can run as cheaply as $100 to several thousand dollars,” he said. “If you brew your own coffee for a month or two yourself, you can afford to be secure.” Monitoring services, Siciliano says, can be had for $1 a day. Homeowners can refer to Siciliano’s web sites, with the Best-Home-SecurityCompanys.com specifically targeting information on security companies for Virginians. It also presents ideas for do-it-yourself projects. Another Internet location that offers many other tips and tricks is the National Association of Realtors’ Houselogic web site at www.houselogic. com/protect-your-home/. “Houselogic is a way for consumers to view their home from the financial end,” said Michelle Wardlaw, Houselogic public affairs associate. “There were lots of tips and trick there for homeowners,” she said, “But the web site is concerned with increasing the value of a home.” Houselogic offers a “binder” system, which consumers can add projects to for review. “The binder will show the costs involved in a home project, including effort, financial, investments and more,” Wardlaw said, “And what makes it different than an HGTV-type of project is it gives more civic-minded individuals information on how to increase the value of the neighborhood too.” ■
