NEWS & VIEWS Dave Matthews Band Provides $376,400 Bama Works Grants to 52 Local Nonprofits
Joan Esposito (right) receives the CAAR Good Neighbor Award on Thursday, June 6. Pam Whorley (left) accepts $100 donation in Esposito’s name.
Charlottesville Area Association of REALTORS® Member Joan Esposito Honored with Good Neighbor Award The Charlottesville Area Association of REALTORS® (CAAR), the voice of real estate in the Central Virginia region, has announced Joan Esposito as a Good Neighbor Award recipient. This recognition program highlights local REALTORS® who dedicate significant time and interest to projects that make a lasting impact on our communities. “The strength and vitality of our community is a result of folks like Joan who are doing amazing work for local charities and causes,” Denise Ramey, GRI, CAAR president and director of relocation at Roy Wheeler Realty, said. A volunteer who spends hundreds of hours with numerous organizations each year, Esposito has devoted the past 14 years to organizing one of Charlottesville’s most popular fundraisers—the Women’s 4 Mile Training Program and Pink Ladies cheer squad. While she officially passed the director position to another strong volunteer last year, Esposito continues to support the mission of training walkers and runners
for the annual Labor Day race event that raises money for breast cancer prevention. “Joan’s attitude, knowledge, volunteer efforts and dedication to the program she grew is outstanding,” Pam Whorley, W4MTP director and head of the Pink Ladies cheer squad, said. “This speaks to the heart of what a good neighbor is.” The W4MTP started with 150 participants, mostly women runners. Esposito’s recruitment brainchild group of Pink Ladies has seen the program flourish into 1,500 women of all shapes, sizes, speeds and ages, even 80-year-old seniors. Last year the training program raised more than $340,000 for the UVa Breast Care Center for education and research. CAAR represents more than 1,000 real estate professionals in Charlottesville and Albemarle and the surrounding areas of Greene, Fluvanna, Nelson, and Louisa counties. t’s been just a few weeks since Lucien Bass attended his fiftieth class reunion at the University of Virginia, but he came back to Central Virginia a long time ago. A 1963 graduate with a degree in mechanical engineering who went on to get a Masters from the university’s Darden School of Business in 1965, Bass is originally from Richmond but spent his professional career in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, working there for 35 years before returning with his wife in 1999 and building a home outside of Crozet. “It was sort of a family thing,” he says, of his original choice. “I was steered towards UVA but I wanted to come here anyway because other members of the family had gone here—an uncle in the 20s.” The former Darden student now teaches a class at the school, attends UVA baseball and football games, supports Monticello, and eats out about once a week. “It seems to me that Charlottesville and Albemarle have far more than their fair share of good restaurants,” he says. Holly Stancil grew up in Maryland, but visited UVA and Charlottesville often with her alumnus father, and earned a degree in psychology here in 1996. Her husband Mark took a degree in Political and Social Thought that same year, then a law degree in 1999. After his graduation the couple went off to Denver for a year, then to D.C. for five, where Mark clerked for judges including Supreme Court Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist. Just six years after leaving Charlottesville, they returned—living first in town, then in Ivy, finally building a home just outside of Crozet. A mother of three now, Stancil doesn’t miss the D.C. rat race, preferring this area and its excellent schools as “a great place to raise kids.”
“Those of us who live here know how fortunate we are.” “Charlottesville is small enough that you feel a sense of community wherever you go,” Stancil says. “I see the same families at school, at church, at the pool, and on the sports fields.” Although they’ve “found a life here outside of the university,” she says, they maintain one within it as well, attending class reunion events, and supporting groups they belonged to as students, like his acapella troupe and her sorority.
Pavilions on the UVA lawn
Like the Bass story, the Stancil story is a familiar one around here: promising out-of-town high school student with a UVA grad in her family emigrates and matriculates, graduates and immigrates and, finally reintegrates back into the community, settling in the Charlottesville area for its wealth of cultural, recreational, and historical riches. “So many alumni come back after living in ‘big cities,’” REALTOR® Denise Ramey says. “They realize what a special place Charlottesville really is, and that it’s a great place to raise their families or enjoy their retirement. It’s hard to beat what we have to offer. The combination of UVA sports and educational opportunities, Blue Ridge mountains, quality of life, great schools, and welcoming, friendly people is unique to Charlottesville and its neighboring communities.” The Basses came back for the school, the sports, the beauty of the landscape and the sophistication of restaurants . . . even for the weather. “We like the climate here,” Bass claims. Yes, “it’s unbearably hot sometimes in the summer and unbearably cold in the winter, but it doesn’t last forever.” The ties that bind old Hoos to young Hoos and Hoos-to-be are what last. UVA’s annual Alumni Family Weekend is where Hoo parents bring wouldbe Hoo children—it’s an annual event for alumni and children of alumni considering applying to the university. This year’s program, Friday June 14 and Saturday June 15, will give potential applicants and their parents an opportunity to learn more about the admission process. Along with a tour of the grounds, the schedule includes
panel discussions by current students and by admission deans from various colleges and universities, a workshop on effective essay writing, and a mock evaluation of admission cases designed to help potential enrollees better understand the factors affecting admission. While UVA gives no preference to students participating in the program, advertising it as merely “informative and valuable for families engaged in the college search process,” the weekend’s activities surely entice many students to apply. UVA expects about 200 parents and 100 students for Alumni Family Weekend 2013. About 1,900 so-called legacy students have applied in the last couple of years, and roughly half have been admitted. How many will settle here at some point after graduation? UVA has no current figures, but Peter Thompson calls himself “one of those
who came to Charlottesville and refused to leave.” Class of ’81 (History) and Executive Director of Charlottesville’s busy Senior Center, Thompson is so bullish on C-ville that the panel he moderated during UVA’s Reunions Weekend was entitled America’s Best Place to Live: Living in Charlottesville in Your Encore Years. For Thompson and the folks at the Center, Charlottesville is a place to “refire,” not “retire.” Boasting 8,000 unique users each year, the Senior Center serves seasoned citizens in the Charlottesville-Albemarle area with more than 100 programs and activities designed to promote health and independence, including fitness and continuing education classes, hobby and support groups, civic forums, travel programs, and a host of volunteer opportunities. To meet the area’s expanding senior population, the Center has launched a $21 million campaign for a new, 60,000 square foot building. The threestory, state of the art facility will include a gymnasium with a walking track, a fitness center, a large café, class and conference rooms, green space for outdoor activities, studio, rehearsal and performing arts spaces, and more. Ground will be broken in 2015. As much as anyone around town, director Thompson is in a position to know why educated, financially comfortable people who’ve seen a bit of the world and can afford to live anywhere choose Charlottesville. “Those of us who live here know how fortunate we are,” he says, citing the small town feel with the big town amenities, the great cultural life, the mild climate, the “world class” health care and easy access to larger cities. “All those things that make Charlottesville a great place to live at any age are also relevant to people when they’re 50, 70, and 90.” “The active, vibrant life that we have in Charlottesville is very attractive to people when they wind down their careers. So many folks who are making these transitions are looking to give back. As their kids are launched, they’re looking at that empty nest and wondering how they’re going to use their wisdom and experience. They want to find opportunities to volunteer, which are plentiful in our community.” Whitman “Pete” Cross II is another of the many age-50-and-better alumni who have moved back, reengaged with the community, and become an integral part of it. Originally from Philadelphia, Cross earned a geology degree from UVA in 1954, spent two years in the Army, then came back for his master’s. Cross chose UVA partly for the climate and the architecture, but mostly because Charlottesville already felt comfortable and familiar. “I knew a lot of people, and I just loved the place and it was the right size,” he says today. Cross knew Charlottesville because his father had spent three years at the UVA in the 20s, later serving on the Alumni Board and the Board of Visitors. “He was very dedicated to UVA and to the people here,” Cross says. “He was so dedicated that all through the late 30s and into the 40s, and through the war afterwards, he brought people down to see if they’d want to go here. He even brought teens from the Philadelphia area down here to play in soccer and baseball.”
For Thompson and the folks at the Center, Charlottesville is a place to “refire,” not “retire.” After graduation, Cross taught geology in Philadelphia and Baltimore, and served as director for two museums in Birmingham, but always knew he’d come back to Central Virginia, and in 1998 he did. “My wife Joy would have liked to have been in a high rise downtown,” he recalls, and “I would like to have been in a cabin in the mountains.” They settled instead in Charlottesville’s handsome Dunlora development near Rio Road. A fitness buff, Cross wasted no time in putting his skills to work. He recalls, “I went over to ACAC [a fitness and wellness club] and said, ‘you know, you could use some more wrinkles over here.’” He’s been a part-time personal trainer and fitness specialist there ever since, and now at the Senior Center as well. An avid shutterbug, Cross later became president of the Charlottesville Camera Club, and a contributor to the Charlottesville Photographic Initiative, two groups comprised of amateur and professional photographers who share their knowledge and passion with each other. He led a two-week natural history and photography tour of Iceland for the Senior
Center as part of their travel program. Joy Cross, an artist, found her own niche, joining the Virginia Watercolor Society, and exhibiting here and elsewhere. The Crosses are enthusiastic participants in UVA’s OSHER Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI). Created in 2001 as the Jefferson Institute for Lifelong Learning (JILL), the Institute takes its inspiration from UVA founder Thomas Jefferson’s deep devotion to study and education as a way of life. Designed for adults aged 50 and over but open to people of all ages, the proudly member-directed and often member-taught group holds its many three-to-six-week courses in the daytime, usually in spots with abundant parking. Subjects range from art history to American history, from opera to the blues, and genetics to cosmology—in other words, the impressive knowledge base of the community which brain training website Luminosity.com named “the smartest city in America” last year. Most OLLI classes are held at the Senior Center, at 1180 Pepsi Place, or at Charlottesville’s Meadows Presbyterian Church, at 2200 Angus Road.
Charlottesville Senior Center
Registrants may take up to 12 units per semester for $100. “OLLI brings together in social as well as class settings people who have incredible expertise,” Cross says. “It’s a delightful organization to be a part of.” “The quality of options living here, whether you’re young or old, is incredible,” Cross says. “I love UVA and what it stands for. I have walked across the Lawn and actually just cried for the excitement, the emotion that the Lawn presents to me. “ “Our community is so influenced by the Jeffersonian legacy and giving back, and that’s very important to university students and university alumni,” Thompson says. While the word “retire” connotes “stepping off the field and just removing yourself from life, the people that are moving here, the university alums, are doing quite the opposite. They’re looking for a new chapter, an encore way of approaching their lives, and Charlottesville has that through civic engagement and altruism and learning.” “We just like being involved with the university,” Bass says. “It’s the whole variety of the area that’s appealing. It’s just a wonderful place to settle.” ■

Volunteer Jill Meyer, vice chair of StreamWatch, counts organisms from a local stream.
Marilyn Pribus and her husband live in Albemarle County where they have two rainbarrels and collect “warming-up” kitchen water for houseplants and to fill the birdbath.
Timely tips You’ve already heard about not running water while you’re brushing your teeth and taking short showers. Here is a brief sampling of some other ideas from Charlottesville’s website: -
Make sure you know where your water shut-off valve is located. This could save gallons of water and damage to your home if a pipe bursts.
-
Use water from dehumidifiers to water indoor and outdoor plants.
-
Collect condensate water from air conditioning units for yard use.
-
Never pour water down the drain when there may be another use for it.
-
Collect shower/bath “warm-up” water in a bucket for use in watering plants or flushing a toilet.
-
Turn on the garbage disposal when pulling the plug on dirty dishwater. This allows the disposal to be cleaned without using more water from the faucet.
-
Dispose of excess food in the garbage rather than the garbage disposal, especially if you have a septic system.
For More Information There are lots (and lots) of online conservation pointers as well. For example, clicking on Charlottesville’s website (www.charlottesville.org) provides you with 81 ways to be a water miser, then concludes with this sage advice: Try to
do one thing each day that will result in saving water. Don’t worry if the savings are minimal. Every drop counts. You can make a difference. The City of Charlottesville and the Albemarle County Service Authority both offer
JUNE 13 — JUNE 19, 2013 ISSUE 22-24
Spring brought us plenty of rain, making it all too easy to forget those long, dry summers in the past few years. And even when we have adequate rainfall, it requires considerable energy to process, pump, and deliver safe water to our taps. Water conservation and water supply has become a global concern and one we can act on locally. “Much of the water in our area is drawn from the Rivanna River watershed which encompasses all of Albemarle and some of Fluvanna and Greene counties,” says REALTOR® John Ince. “There are three active groups in Charlottesville involved in preserving, monitoring and informing the public and government about the health of the watershed.” These groups include the Rivanna Conservation Society, the Rivanna River Basin Commission, and StreamWatch. Ince, the current chair of the StreamWatch Board of Directors, says, “We are the monitoring leg—a volunteer non-profit that has been monitoring our streams and rivers for ten years by analyzing organisms in the waterways.” The organisms, he explains, have varying degrees of tolerance to pollution and the long-term data is extremely valuable in recognizing changes in our region. A key to clean water is using less water. To help in this effort, the City of Charlottesville, Albemarle County, the Albemarle County Service Authority (ACSA), and the Rivanna Water and Sewer Authority (RWSA), prepared a detailed Water Conservation Study in 2009 and have implemented a number of strategies. While some plans involve local businesses such as restaurants and carwashes, there are also tactics for individuals. For instance, swapping older toilets for low-flow models provides significant savings. The American Water Works Association pegs nearly onethird of a home’s water usage to flushing with standard toilets. Low-flow models, at 1.6 gallons per flush (gpf), cut this by more than half, which saves water and shows up as a saving on your water bill. In fact, there are even HET fixtures (High Efficiency Toilet) they use a mere 1.3 gpf. Low-flow showerheads provide additional savings. Older showerheads impart as 5.5 gallons per minutes (gpm), while newer ones have flow rates of 2.5 gpm or less, yet are designed to feel forceful. For existing fixtures, aerators—screw-on faucet tips—generally restrict flow rates while still making the flow reasonably enthusiastic. Aerators are inexpensive, easy to
install, and can be an extremely effective water conservation step. Rainbarrels are seen more and more often around town, too. These are a great idea because rainwater is free. Using captured water for gardens or car washing is an excellent way to reduce the use of water that has been processed to safe drinking standards. Rainbarrels also lessen runoff that can affect local waterways. (Washed-away soil creates silt and is a major source of water pollution.) Rainbarrels can be purchased and some people simply convert garbage cans that have been replaced by the large wheeled containers provided by many waste companies. Be sure your rain barrel is properly screened so you don’t create a mosquito nursery.
help in the form of rebates. Both offer up to $100 each toward the purchase of lowflow toilets and up to $30 each toward the purchase of rainbarrels. Other area water agencies have varied programs, so check with your provider.
