CACF Annual Luncheon Honors Retiring President John R. Redick Over 225 people attended the Charlottesville Area Community Foundation (CACF) Annual Luncheon held in honor of John Redick’s retirement.
There was a bittersweet side as the luncheon was the formal opportunity to say farewell to the President of CACF, who has served the Foundation for 28 years in various capacities. During the luncheon on October 16, a slide presentation highlighted John and his incredible tenure at CACF. Larry Martin, Chairman of the Foundation Governing Board, gave a “State of the Foundation” report covering the accomplishments of the past twelve months and the outlook for future Foundation activities. He then announced a new milestone: CACF has supported our community with over $60 million in grants since 1967. He also acknowledged to the group that the lunch this year honors the legacy of John Redick: “John has been an energetic, visionary leader of CACF since he first joined its governing board in

On November 1, the Piedmont Council for the Arts (PCA) will host an exhibition of quilts by the Crescent Hall Quilters in the CitySpace Gallery throughout November and December. Crescent Hall is one of seven sites in the city’s quilt of public housing. It was built in the 1970s for the elderly and disabled. The Crescent Hall Quilters group formed more than ten years ago, inspired by an idea from public housing resident Teresa Stinnie. She envisioned the group as a way for residents to meet one another and strengthen their community through fellowship. Group members started out learning the basics of quilting by hand. Now, they create quilts using the most difficult patterns. This year’s exhibit marks the third annual quilting exhibition by the group at CitySpace. Visitors can expect a variety of colorful quilts. All quilts are available for sale, just in time for the holidays! A First Fridays opening reception will be held on Friday, November 1, 5:30-7:00pm with many of the quilters present. The exhibit will be on display through December 16, 2013. The CitySpace Gallery is open to the public Monday-Friday, 9:00am-5:00pm. CitySpace is located at 100 5th Street NE on the Downtown Mall in Charlottesville.

1986. This is in large part due to his extraordinary commitment to our community, his understanding of local needs, and his ability to form strong, collaborative relationships to address those needs.” The luncheon included an address by Angelica Light, former President and CEO of the Hampton Roads Foundation. Her talk entitled “Whither the Commonwealth?” provided a thoughtful approach to ensuring that we all be mindful of our obligations of citizenship. Alan Culbertson, Former Chair of the CACF Governing Board, provided a tribute to John: “The Foundation that we know and love today – and therefore the Community that we know and love today – would be dramatically diminished but for John Redick. In a special presentation, he announced to the assembled group that the John R. Redick Fund has been established in John’s honor at CACF. In addition, a notebook of “Dear John” letters written to him from community friends was presented to John. The entire group was moved by John Redick’s “Reflections” on CACF, spanning his almost three decades of service to the Foundation. He concluded: “We are all caretakers during our brief stay. I was privileged to be part of a sound and effective organization which will continue to serve our community in perpetuity.” Founded in 1967, The Charlottesville Area Community Foundation facilitates philanthropy to improve the quality of life in Charlottesville and the surrounding counties of Albemarle, Buckingham, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa, Nelson and Orange. Hoooo’s
Halloween? BY MARILYN PRIBUS
T
he days of overturned privies or the principal’s Model T appearing on the school roof are past. In fact, these days Halloween brings more good deeds than mischief, often with special events that benefit a variety of organizations in our region. If you’re ready to get into a spooky mood with other local ghosts and goblins, dust off your zombie chains, your Superman cape or your royal tiara and plan to do some good while you’re having fun.
would spend the night in the Tavern Room, probably in considerably less comfort. In 1862, the Army of the Confederacy converted the hotel into the Gordonsville Receiving Hospital and troops, supplies, and wounded were transported on the rail lines from nearby battlefields. More than 100 structures eventually surrounded the main building, including 14-foot x 14foot hospital tents and ward buildings more than 100 feet long. These ward buildings were the primary patient care centers. They also housed surgery facilities, a black smithy, laundry, and mortuary. The hospital cared for as many as 1000 patients at any one time and is considered to be the first in the U.S. employing triage as patients were delivered by wagon or rail. New arrivals were eval-
uated on the front lawn where doctors determined whether each man needed to be immediately admitted at the Receiving Hospital or were stable enough to be transported on to Charlottesville, Richmond or Lynchburg. During the duration of the hostilities, the Gordonsville Receiving Hospital provided care for more than 70,000 soldiers, mostly Confederate, but also some Federals who were treated as casualties rather than the enemy. Remarkably, fatalities at the hospital were fewer than 700. Much of this was
due to the diligent use of sterile bedding and is also attributed to the local “homespun” potions and remedies. In the reconstruction period following the war, this hospital served newly freed slaves as a Freedman’s Bureau Hospital. As the United States healed and the railroads boomed, the graceful building finally returned to its role as a hotel. Now fully restored, the Exchange Hotel is a museum dedicated to the Civil War era with exhibits and memorabilia related to medical and military history. Over the years, there have been many reports of apparitions—both visible and audible—with many unexplained sights and sounds. Visitors have reported seeing orbs of light moving from room to room, hearing footsteps and moans, and smelling cigar smoke and perfume.

The cornerstone of Halloween is always a haunted house—or how about a haunted hotel? There’s one in our area that was ranked 15th on The History Channel’s list of the Top Most Haunted Places in the nation and it’s open to the public. Prior to the Civil War, Gordonsville’s Exchange Hotel with its grand veranda and elegant high-ceilinged parlors welcomed travelers from two rail lines: the Virginia Central Railroad and the Alexandria Railroad. Trains stopped in Gordonsville for their engines to take on fuel and water for their steam power. Passengers often changed trains here, hence the name of the Exchange Hotel. Trains at that time had no services, save a restroom, so even “through” passengers would disembark for a meal—or perhaps a libation—or to spend the night. Eight private upstairs bedchambers were for reserved for women, married couples and families, while unattached gentlemen

Paranormal investigators claim to have documented the activity of various spirits. For example, one former employee says that while he never saw anything personally, on various occasions, he heard mysterious sounds such as doors closing, heavy items being dragged across a floor and things being dropped. It’s unclear whether Anna, an African American and former cook, was freeborn, but there is evidence that she was a childhood friend of the second wife of the hotel owner and later managed the summer kitchen. Anna’s apparition has reportedly been sighted a number of times between the summer kitchen and the hotel itself. And there are also reports of sightings of several nurses and a 14-year-old boy who, so the story goes, took their own lives during the time the hotel was the hospital. The museum’s regular hours are: Monday through Thursday and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Closed on Friday. Sunday hours are 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. The Halloween season brings special hours and even if you aren’t treated to the sight of a ghostly apparition, you’ll be entertained by the hotel’s offerings. “This year, the Exchange Hotel is offering three different Halloween activities,” says Angel May, Museum Admin-
istrator at Historic Gordonsville Inc. “We have visitors from as far as Richmond and even Maryland,” she says, “but they come in spurts so it’s never crowded.” One option is the Trail of Terror and The Depot of Death on Friday, October 25th, and Saturday, October 26th, from 8:00 p.m. to midnight. “Our walking trail is set up with actors like a haunted house attraction,” May explains. “Then visitors are led to the depot. Only four people can go in at a time and it’s like a haunted house.” Another option is the self-guided candlelight tour of the museum itself on Friday and Saturday from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. “It’s exactly like our daytime tours,” May notes, “but with the lights very low and candles everywhere. Things are decorated for the season and you may go at your own pace.” She adds that the porches are open with tables and rockers and a beverage station offering hot chocolate and coffee. “An outside vendor has things like candied apples, soups, chili, cookies and brownies,” she adds, “and people are very welcome to bring them to the porch to eat.” New this year, May says, is a Mini Haunted House for children 12 and under, also from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. “Out in the
summer kitchen, we have three different rooms decorated for Halloween including a Witches Lair,” she says. “Local Girl Scouts did the decorations so it’s really a community effort. And parents are free on this one.” The proceeds from the modest admission fees for all three events go toward the “Save the Depot” effort. “This is a thing we are doing to replace the roof of the depot,” says May. “It’s leaking. We’ve repaired one side, but this is a way to raise money to get that done.” The Museum, at 400 South Main Street in Gordonsville, is a National Historic Landmark. Zombie Run is an Annual Event
cannot wait to bring the Zombie 5K to Charlottesville again,” declares Zombie-in-Charge Francesca Conte. “This event is great for families, serious runners, and non runners alike and benefits the Filmmakers Republik which created the original movie Danger! Zombies! Run!” Conte explains that the Filmmaker’s Republik is a collective of media and film artists working to form a virtual studio in Central Virginia and is open to everyone interested in collaborating in shared projects, both commercial and artistic. Director Brian Wimer launched the Zombie movie and the race four years ago. Once registered, runners opt to be humans or zombies. Humans get a head start with their “lives” hanging in the balance as a ribbon from their backs. Ninety seconds later the zombies are released on a quest to snatch as many ribbons as possible because the zombie with the most ribbons wins. When humans lose their ribbons, volunteers along the course will be ready to “zombify” them with fake blood. Runners can become “Deluxe Zombies” with professionally applied zombie make-up for only $15 over the reg-

There’s even a four-legged Halloween benefit—the Doggie Howl-oWeen on Wednesday, October 30th. Sponsored by the Downtown Business Association, Travel by Batty Benford, Sammy Snacks, and several other generous local businesses, the proceeds will benefit the Amanda Benford Cure for Canine Cancer Research. At 6:30 p.m., a Doggie Parade will proceed to the Main Street Arena. More than 20 participating Mall businesses will have doggie treats for the four-legged Trick-or-Treaters as they parade to the arena. Dogs should definitely remind their owners to dress them up with amusing, inspiring, and classy costumes because the Doggie Costume Contest begins at 6:45 p.m. Prizes will be awarded by celebrity judges and there will

“E
nergy efficiency is important in today’s houses,” says Guy Caroselli, senior technical advisor for our region’s Local Energy Alliance Program (LEAP). A major enemy of efficiency, he continues, is air leakage because of open places in an attic, poor weather-stripping around doors and windows, openings around pipes under the kitchen sink and even poorly insulated electric outlets. “The first step in energy conservation is treating that leakage,” he says. “It’s always a good idea to have an assessment.” LEAP provides a lot of information about the benefits of a home assessment and the cost is modest. For more information, visit: www. leap-va.org. Caroselli suggests that most people can mount a do-it-yourself attack on air leakage by caulking or insulating around flues, chimneys, doors, windows, and entry points for pipes or wires. Check pull-down attic stairs and the attic itself. These steps are inexpensive and show good, quick results. The next step would be increasing insulation in the attic, the walls and under the floor if there is an uninsulated crawl space. Some people can tackle this themselves, but insulation is usually a job for professionals. Finally, consider replacing old windows with ones bolstered with new technology such as double or even triple panes. Often the airtight space between the panes is filled with Argon, Krypton, or a similar colorless nontoxic gas which provides additional insulation. “When you’re looking at the window, the double panes can’t be too close together or too far apart,” Caroselli advises. “Also the spacer between the panes has to be non-conductive with no metal. You need ‘warm-edge’ technology such as rubber or vinyl.” The next thing to look for is good window weather-stripping. “Some of the better windows have two or three sections of weather-stripping,” he says. “You want a window with a high Rvalue which measures how good the insulation is. Some triple-pane fiber-

glass windows with three films and gas between the panes are up around R-7.” The window frame is important too and wood, fiberglass, or vinyl are far more non-conductive than metal. All these aspects contribute to a window’s U-factor rating. “The U-factor is the inverse of the R-rating,” explains Caroselli. The R-rating measures the insulating qualities, so the higher the better. On the other hand, the U-rating measures how much heat is lost so the lower the better.
Films and coatings are also important components of new window technology because low-emissive (low-E) coatings can help decrease the U-factor. These coatings are virtually imperceptible layers of metal or metal oxide on window glass. They reflect warmth back into the home in the winter and prevent unwanted heat in the summer. “Another thing to remember,” says Caroselli, “is that you don’t put the same windows in all parts of the house.” The heat from direct sunlight through a window is called the Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC). The lower the SHGC, the less solar heat comes through. South-facing windows can gain beneficial heat in winter, so their SHGC should be higher to permit more heat gain. (Because the sun is higher overhead in summer, a roof overhang of about two feet or a leafed-out deciduous tree can prevent unwanted summer heat gain.) East- and west-facing
The R-rating measures the insulating qualities, so the higher the better. On the other hand, the U-rating measures how much heat is lost so the lower the better.
windows, on the other hand, should have low SHGCs, since they get direct solar heat gain during summer. Clearly, there are lots of ins and outs to window shopping, but there’s a nice short cut: EnergyStar. “That’s a good place to start,” says Caroselli. Energy Star windows are made with materials that reduce unwanted heat transfer, insulate effectively and use the special coatings to control heat loss and heat gain. A third-party certifying agency tests the windows to ensure EnergyStar standards are met. With the assurance of an Energy Star label, shoppers can choose from an amazing variety of modern windows whether awning style, which open at the top; hopper style, which open at the bottom; or casements, which open from the side, like a door. There are windows that slide up and down while others glide side to side. Windows can be constructed from wood or vinyl or fiberglass. They can be square, rectangular, oval or round. They can feature arches and grids. The glass itself can be frosted for privacy and a stained or etched glass window can punctuate any home’s décor. An important consideration should be whether the windows echo the style of the house itself. For instance, windows with many small panes would “fit” perfectly in an arts-and-crafts style house, but look out of place in an angular modern dwelling. In short, when shopping for windows for new construction or replacements, homeowners should find the house-complimenting style that they like and be certain it has the EnergyStar rating that promises good energy efficiency. n
