Community News & Happenings Unity of Charlottesville Hosts First Annual Harvest Fall Festival Unity of Charlottesville’s Women of Unity are hosting their first annual Harvest Festival on Saturday, November 9th, from 11:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Unity is located at 2825 Hydraulic Road in Charlottesville “We wanted to create a memorable and fun day for the entire family,” said Rhonda Cooley, one of the Harvest Festival’s directors. “There will be games and activities for children—including a clown, local artisans, home-baked goods, local musicians, seasonal handmade wreaths for both harvest and holiday, and plenty of food.” Also available at the Harvest festival are walks and other activities on Unity’s recently completed Shalom Labyrinth, a full-scale replica of the labyrinth found in Chartres, France. Healing practitioners from Unity’s Holistic Healing Center will also be present to offer demonstrations of different alternative healing modalities. Unity’s Harvest Festival is open to the public. group seeks funding to develop concert programs for children in local schools. • Celebrate Love – Artist Malena Magnolia seeks funding for a printmaking project that takes art to the streets. During SOUP, community members make short presentations about their creative projects in need of funding. Attendees participate in a dialogue about the proposals over a nourishing meal with local ingredients in handmade bowls by local artists. Then, each attendee enters a voting booth to choose one project to fund with the money raised from the meal that night. We’ll award the grant to the winner of the most votes right away. Consider SOUP an experiment in civic engagement and a chance to play a role in supporting creativity in our community. The first ever Charlottesville SOUP took place in January 2013. A grant of $1,045 was awarded to the Charlottesville Textile Cooperative, which used the funds to buy a loom. The first event sold out and more than 200 people were turned away at the door. The second SOUP in May 2013, sold out again, and a grant of $1,720 was award to local photographer Megan Bent. Similar efforts are taking place around the country. Charlottesville SOUP was inspired by Kate Daughdrill, a former resident of Charlottesville who helped found The Garage and went on to start Detroit SOUP. The idea was originally taken from Chicago’s InCUBATE (“a research group dedicated to exploring new approaches to arts administration and arts funding”). United land is now in negotiation with two more commercial tenants that they hope will soon open on the same property as the Gander mountain store. they also have a letter of intent from a new tenant in their hollymead town center location. the identities of these businesses are still a closely guarded secret but negotiations are going well, Wood said, adding that “the last four to five months have seen the strongest market we’ve experienced in several years.”

Digital video was new, and people were just learning to edit movies on their computers. “I said, ‘why don’t we do something like The 48 Hour Film Project.’” Other festivals had real-time film projects, but Wadlow imagined accomplished filmmakers working with amateurs, “producing their films and teaching them how to make movies on this crazy, condensed schedule.” He

Largely, they all apply again next year.” Although he’s quick to share credit with UVA, Wadlow is justifiably proud of Adrenaline’s role in gaining local students’ acceptance to elite film programs. “A lot of the people who have participated have gone on to start careers,” he notes. “Steve Robillard went on to win an Emmy for Deadliest Catch. A bunch of kids have gone to USC and NYU. They’re making it happen.” This year’s yet to be written, shot or produced Adrenaline films will be shown at 9:00 p.m. Saturday at the Culbreth Theatre. As a result, we’re able to bring in the faculty and other experts to talk about the films. What distinguishes the festival is that we drill down deep into what the films are about and the subject matters and the topics that they cover.” It’s an approach that clearly pleases. More experience doesn’t necessarily mean you’re going to make a better film. It’s also interesting watching teams work together and share ideas.”
