In 2015, he will deliver the Bagley Wright Lectures in Poetry.

Early November is when Central Virginia crafters open their doors to serious collectors and the casually curious, and to all aficionados of skill and imagination and handmade beauty. Twenty-eight studios representing thirty-eight artisans will welcome visitors November 9-10 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m, in the 19th annual, free and self-guided Artisans Studio Tour. Founded in 1994 to enhance community awareness of the amazing artisans in our midst, the tour provides a chance to see and purchase the finest area pottery, fabric, furniture, jewelry, stained glass, woodwork and baskets, and to learn about looms, kilns, and other crafting tools. Artisans will demonstrate their methods and techniques; some will offer hands-on experience. Each studio on the tour will provide food and beverages prepared by local chefs and sometimes the artisans themselves. “Men always love to see all the equipment,” says potter Nancy Ross, noting that craft lovers come in both genders. “We attract men as well as women because of that.” Every artisan on the tour has been approved by a jury of their professional peers. “There is an overabundance of highly professional artisans in this area.” Ross’s functional stoneware, classical and sculptural in shape, is glazed with blue and green and creamy white

lected her work ever since. “I liked how her classic designs for pitchers, bowls and mugs satisfied my functional needs and added artistic flare,” Maxson remembers. “Whether she’s working at her potter’s wheel or hand-building a piece, Nan has an eye for detail and perspective that makes the resulting piece very pleasing.” Maxson loves the Artisans Tour for “the opportunity to see where the artist works their craft, to see the materials they begin with, and to hear them talk about their inspirations. Visiting Nan’s kiln area and studio, for example, gives me chance to see some of the steps she goes through to turn clay into a useful graceful gift and talk with her students. It is my window into imagining how potters work in other parts of the world.” “Cookware and dishes preserve and extend cultural values of sharing and celebration,” Maxson believes. “Beyond the utilitarian necessities, they are part of the heart of binding and repairing human relations. Potters are culture builders in their own way; they shape forms from basic elements of clay and water, add strokes of color and heat, and make vessels that save and sustain and please us in so many ways.” Anita Whitney’s jewelry, for sale at the Sycamore Gallery in Charlottesville, is fashioned with gemstone beads, 18k gold, and silver sheet or wire. Barboursville resident Susan Jamme went on her first Artisans Studio Tour in 1993, and first bought Whitney’s jewelry “10 or 15 years ago. I have purchased many pieces of Anita’s jewelry, ear rings, pendants, rings and bracelets,” Jamme says. “I am always drawn to her bracelets. People often ask me where I got the bracelet when they see me wearing one of Anita’s creations.”

Paul and Diane Wishnafski of Connecticut began collecting handmade glass and pottery 15 years ago, and chose Crane’s Ferns Collection work when they built their retirement home.

I envisioned my first floor guest bath as being a showcase of Suzanne’s work. All my guests react similarly with an ‘ahhhh,’ a soft ‘wow’ and a smile when they enter the room.” Jo Perez works in glass, making everything from stained glass windows, panels and free-standing sculpture to glass and wood interpretations of Japanese andon lanterns to dichroic glass jewelry. “I love the Studio Tour,” Perez says. “It’s my favorite show because of the studio setting and space for display. It is a great place for visitors to come in and take their time, grab a snack and chat. They can take a good look at the work and ask questions about the craft. I also love the camaraderie with the other artisans. Since most artists work alone, the Tour gives us an opportunity to get together.” “I plan to do the ‘make your own quilt square’ activity again this year,” Perez says. “This has been popular and folks sometimes come just to make their yearly piece. I do the glass work and visitors design the quilt square. Home Equity Loans Can Free Up Cash For Big-Ticket Projects

ome equity loans can be a useful source of cash for homeowners who are considering remodeling jobs, mortgage refinancing, major appliance purchases, education, weddings or other big-ticket items. They also may be a smart economic move when consolidating existing high-interest-rate loans such as credit card debts. Paying high-interest loans off with a single home equity loan translates into a single monthly payment with a considerably lower interest rate. In addition, the interest on a home equity loan is usually tax deductible.

What is a home equity loan? A home’s equity, of course, is the home’s value minus the existing mortgage balance and any other existing loans. Equity loans take two forms. One is an outright loan that provides a lump sum, generally at a fixed rate for a fixed term. The other is a home equity line of credit, which is abbreviated to HELOC (pronounced HE-lock), that provides money as needed and usually has a variable interest rate that may change during the term of the loan because it is tied to the prime lending rate. Ty Smith, a mortgage broker with SunTrust, Inc. in Charlottesville for eleven years, explains that both kinds of loans have additional costs such as appraisals, originator and title fees, closing costs and pre-payment fees. “In some cases,” he says, “these may be paid by the lender.”

Outright loans Generally, people can up borrow up to 90 percent of the equity (not the

market value) in a home they occupy and about 70 percent for non-owner-occupied houses. Smith notes there are a wide variety of options from five- to 30-year loans. These loans are commonly second mortgages, however if a home is owned outright, the loan would be a first mortgage. “Home equity loans are usually done through banks or credit unions as opposed to a mortgage company or broker,” Smith says, “and the closing costs are typically less than a mortgage.” A repayment schedule, like that of a mortgage, is set up, so the costs are regular and predictable.

HELOCs Line-of-credit loans are useful for providing ready credit for needs that don’t require a large one-time payment. Proceeds might be used for long-term renovation projects or college tuition payments and the borrower can choose when and how much to borrow. Again, the interest may be tax deductible. As a

rule, interest rates are lower than those for an outright loan, however, it’s important to remember that variable rates can climb. “There would be a credit limit established and borrowers can use any part of it at any time,” Smith explains, adding that payments are made on only the outstanding amount of the loan, not the total available. “It’s a revolving account similar to a credit card,” Smith continues, “and the money can be used and paid back and used again. Unlike a credit card, a HELOC is secured by the equity in the home so rates are much lower than an unsecured loan.” Rates depend on the repayment option chosen by the borrower. Smith says that lenders often pay closing costs, which are less than the closing costs of a mortgage or outright home equity loan. In addition, it’s common for borrower to have the option to make full repayment at any time or to just pay the interest. Smith notes that home equity loan rates in our area depend on individual situations. “There are so many variations,” he says, “depending on size of loan, the credit profile of the borrower, and whether it’s a first or second lien. It’s always a good idea to shop around between institutions.”

Caveats “Borrowers always must remember they are taking equity out of their home, which decreases its value,” warns Smith. “Failure to repay could result in foreclosure or a short sale. The loan must be repaid if the house is sold.” He further cautions that HELOCs should be used with the intent to pay back what is used in a relatively short time. “A HELOC is a good fit when the money is being used to put back into a home,” he says, “but it’s not a way to buy things you just want. People can get in trouble when they are using a HELOC for something like an auto. Just like a credit card, it’s meant to be repaid promptly.” Still, for people who handle their finances well, home equity loans can be a practical low-interest way to find money for expenses.
