Fluvanna SPCA Announces Annual Twelve Strays of Christmas Campaign

The Fluvanna SPCA, a no-kill shelter located in Troy, VA, announces its annual Twelve Strays awareness campaign. Each year FSPCA chooses twelve very special animals who may be considered harder-to-adopt due to their age, physical condition, or appearance, and promotes them throughout the holidays.

“In addition to the Twelve Strays being a fundraiser, it’s an important tool for maintaining our no-kill shelter,” says Jennie Shuklis, FSPCA Executive Director. “Our goal is to get furever homes for all our animals, especially these twelve. We’ve had great success in past years finding homes for our Twelve Strays, and we look forward to

that success this year!”

Donations raised through Twelve Strays will go toward medical care, spay/neuter, and basic everyday care for all FSPCA animals. New City Arts Forum: Art, Food, and Community

On March 6-8, 2014, New City Arts is hosting a Forum on the intersection of art, food, and community at The Haven in downtown Charlottesville.

The Forum is a New City Arts biennial conference that provides challenging content and artistic engagement with a high emphasis on relationship building. The 2012 Forum was on “Art, City, and Society” and included sessions led by many local and regional leaders in the arts. Following the rich conversations from the 2012 Forum, the 2014 NCAI Forum will focus on “Art, Food, and Community.”

temperance society erected the first building in 1855, just outside the University of Virginia’s entrance gate. By 1900 students had dubbed the area “the Corner,” for the intersection of the road to town and the road to the university. By that time its restaurants, pool rooms and drugstores, and its post office, bookstores, and barbershop, were the social and commercial hub of student life – but only for upperclassmen. First year scholars weren’t welcome.

Take a walk on the Corner today and you’ll find used books and fashionable clothing, beer and bagels – more than 60 businesses, most locally owned, including a basement reggae store and a 24-hour greasy spoon.

Defined today as roughly “church to church,” the Corner encompasses a thriving seven block commercial area between St. Paul’s Memorial and University Baptist churches along University Avenue from Chancellor to 13th streets, including Elliewood Avenue and 14th Street. The list of longtime Corner stalwarts is impressive. The oldest restaurant in the city, The Virginian, opened its doors there in 1923, serving goose liver sandwiches and root beer while Prohibition reigned. FreemanVictorius frame shop opened in 1938.

Mincers began selling tobacco in 1948, switching to sportswear and all things UVA as smoking waned. The College Inn began serving pizza and sandwiches and Greek specialties in 1953, around the same time as the White Spot began serving “Gus Burgers.”

ing accessories. Mincer’s moved to its present home in 1954, and Robert H. “Bobby” Mincer, a 1958 graduate of UVA’s Commerce School, joined his father in the business in 1960, taking over when Robert W. retired in 1972.

Back before cell phones and co-eds, Mincer’s sold reams of stationery to lovesick UVA Hoos.

It also sold more records – those large vinyl discs that preceded CDs and cassette tapes! – than any other store between Washington, DC and Raleigh, North Carolina.

Current Mincer-in-Charge, Bobby’s son, Mark, came on board full-time after graduating from the Commerce School in 1985. Along with its smoking supplies, Mincer’s had always sold men’s sweatshirts and white undershirts, but coats and ties were di regueur for classes, so clothing was just a small part of its inventory. Mark renovated and expanded the store, eventually phasing out the smoking products in favor of an expanded, UVA-branded clothing line, and renaming the store Mincer’s University of Virginia Imprinted Sportswear.

Prints Richard Freeman at Freeman-Victorius at 1413 University Avenue remembers the old days. Freeman and his wife Brigitte bought the shop in 1967. “The Corner was very peaceful,” Richard remembers, “and there were hundreds of young men roaming the streets with jackets and ties, dressed like they were going to Sunday School. That was back in the day if you showed up without it, you got sent home. It was, of course, all men save maybe one or two. They were very well-dressed and well-mannered.”

Freeman-Victorius traces its lineage to London, England in the 1920s, where Paul Victorius, a young Connecticut man, quit medical studies at Oxford began amassing a large collection of prints and rare books, and opened a framing shop. Victorius had a sister in Charlottesville, and in 1938, with war in Europe looming, he left London and opened a store on Starr Hill, moving it

Reggae Not every business district has its own family-run reggae shop named after a Bob Marley song. Seth Meachum opened Roots Rock Reggae at 1419 University Avenue in 1999, and his son Lloyd operates it today, selling tie dye clothing, glassware, and reggae CDs.

Books Local bibliophiles, matriculating or not, know Heartwood Books at 5 Elliewood Avenue as a refreshing alternative to big box bookstores, a delightfully jumbled old-fashioned book shop overflowing with used and rare volumes at discounted prices.

Paul Collinge and a colleague opened Heartwood in 1975, selling new and used books of particular interest to the university community. Collinge too remembers a quieter Corner, with “a lot more shops that actually sold stuff as opposed to restaurants. When I came on Elliewood, a lot of the buildings were still occupied, mostly with student housing. There was one that was actually still family owned and had a guy living in it who had lived in there for 40 years or something like that.”

Today Heartwood is the oldest singleowner business on Elliewood, and the Corner is “very much changed,” teeming with restaurants and coffee shops that have replaced travel agencies, hair cutteries and pharmacies, and a couple of textbook purveyors that dated back to the 19th century.

Clothing Changed but still much the same.

“I grew up in Charlottesville and the Corner is one of the only parts of Charlottesville that isn’t unrecognizable,” says Jocelyn Churchman, owner of Finch, a men and women’s clothing store she opened 15 years ago at 1501 University Avenue. “It’s still the same Corner – a blend of students and townspeople and tourists. Remember the Tavern, when they put that sign up, “Where Students, Tourists and Townspeople Meet’? I feel like that’s an exact description of the Corner.”

Although UVA students can find more goods on grounds than previous generations could, “they love to come over here and eat and drink and go shopping,” Churchman says. “If they think they can buy it on the Corner, they’re going to do that before they go off the Corner. The Corner is a gold

For those who insist on health food in a diner, The White Spot serves veggie burgers, and turkey burgers too, and six years ago it opened a backroom. But gobbling a Gusburger on a stool facing the griddle is the authentic White Spot experience.

faculty, staff encounter. On any given day of the week, there are visitors to the university area that are prospective students. We’re proud of the fact that we have an historic area and we’ve preserved the historic feeling, and yet we’re a pretty hip, modern, thriving retail and restaurant center.”

A 1990s streetscape project that added brick sidewalks, cobblestone crosswalks and more trees, and buried the utility lines, made the Corner “healthier and even prettier and more aesthetically pleasing than it was 30 years ago,” Lorenzoni says. Visitors today also have a choice of three parking garages, on 14th Street, Elliewood, and behind the College Inn and CVS. “Our business goes through the ceiling when the students are gone. I think the townspeople feel a lot more comfortable when the students are gone

that seem to be busier now than they were a few years ago.”

“There is a lot of energy on the Corner,” Mark Lorenzoni says. “It’s a special feeling that you don’t necessarily get at other shopping districts.” Lorenzoni and family recently celebrated his birthday at Crozet Pizza at Buddhist Biker Bar, the 20 Elliewood branch of the popular family business National Geographic said serves the Best Pizza in the World. “My Mom and Dad loved it.

This place was just hopping at 7 o’clock on a Saturday night, and I said ‘you’re getting an experience just like what the students experience.’ You feel young,” Lorenzoni says, “when you’re on the Corner.” n

When Mark and Cynthia Lorenzoni opened Ragged Mountain Running Shop (now at 3 Elliewood Avenue) in 1982, it was the first running specialty store in the area. Today their four children work with them, alongside 60 part-time employees, all of them runners. “It’s pretty neat to be part of something historic,” Mark says today.

“We’re one of the oldest shopping districts in the states. We are the bridge between the university and the community. We’re the first neighbors that not only the students but visitors,

“It’s very much changed and it’s changing again now,” Paul Collinge says, “because of these large, concentrated student apartments that are being built under the new city density zoning rules and this has created much larger undergraduate pedestrian traffic and that’s very good for some of the businesses. That is the question. artificial trees have the advantages of symmetry, convenience and always being the right size.

They can be used year after year, don’t need water, don’t drop needles and can make a real difference to people with allergies. On the other hand, artificial trees are generally made from metal and petroleum-based plastics and some older trees even contain lead. This means they are non-recyclable and non-biodegradable. also as many as 85 percent of the trees are imported from China and some people are concerned about the conditions for workers there. The trees must also travel a long, long distance. still, it’s estimated that an artificial tree used for at least ten years has about the same carbon footprint as buying a real tree every year for ten years.

The national Christmas Tree association says there are more than 30 million real trees bought in the U.s. every year and gathering your own at a tree farm—there are some 15,000 in the country—is often a family tradition. about 350,000 acres are used to raise the millions of trees at various stages of growth. Those trees are consuming carbon dioxide and exhaling oxygen, but they are also farmed as agricultural products, which usually means annual applications of herbicides, pesticides, and fertilizers.

a third option is a living tree in a container. These are typically smaller because of the weight. it’s critical to remember that trees are dormant this time of year and introducing them to indoor warmth may confuse them into starting to grow. if this happens, they generally do not do well when replanted in the cold outdoors. ideally, living trees should not be inside more than a week or so before planting according to your nursery’s directions and mulched thoroughly.

The bottom line, of course, is real, artificial, or living is a personal choice dependent upon one’s living situation and lifestyle.

Lights! Lights! Lights! some people frost their homes with holiday lights while others put up a simple garnish. Whatever your style, be

sure to consider led lights which use 80 to 90 percent less energy than traditional incandescent bulbs. led bulbs don’t break and come in vibrant colors. led lights cost about three times as much as incandescents, but they last considerably longer. again, the bottom line is personal taste.

People who don’t celebrate Christmas, yet want their homes to be festive and lighted, might opt for an led candle-style light in each window, so very appropriate with Virginia’s Colonial tradition.

Continuing the green theme, remember that the library and internet have hundreds of ideas for Christmas crafts employing recycled items. For example, the bottoms of plastic bottles often have interesting shapes. Cut them out, then pierce a small hole for a ribbon, raffia or wire. Use as a single layer or glue matching bottoms back to back. get out the tin snips and turn the ends of cans into shiny stars or snowflakes. never underestimate the decorating power of children with colored paper, cotton balls, and glue. They always enjoy making paper chains from construction paper or the colored foil wraps from candy and the colored foil florists use on potted plants. Foil chains can last for many years.

By pursuing a “green” strategy this year, your holidays can be both happy and eco-friendly. n Marilyn Pribus and her husband still have the foil chains and can-lid snow flakes they made their first Christmas when their holiday budget was basically zero. These have been augmented over the years by ornaments made by their two sons.
