Community News & Happenings Community Foundation Announces $277,400 in Community Endowment Grant Awards to 37 Local Nonprofits The Charlottesville Area Community Foundation (CACF) announced $277,400 in grants to 37 local nonprofits through CACF’s Community Endowment Fund. Twenty-three agencies’ requests were fully funded. Eight agencies received Community Endowment grants from CACF for the first time. Several grants support rural health, including the Jefferson Area Board for Aging Community Health Services Program, the Orange County Free Clinic’s nurse practitioner project, the Piedmont Regional Dental Clinic, and the Rx Partnership to provide access to free prescription medication. Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry will support the Feeding 5000 food distribution program, Meals on Wheels will provide home-delivered meals within the City of Charlottesville, and a coalition of seven churches will provide food and home food-delivery to underserved and disabled residents of Greene County. “Since joining CACF last month, I have been struck by how many great nonprofit leaders we have here in our community, and by the depth of knowledge and expertise that they bring to
serving and supporting others,” said Anne Scott, President, CACF. “Equally impressive is the level of thought and dedicated effort that nonprofits are giving to continuously strengthen programs and services, and to make sure as many people as possible can access them. The Community Endowment Fund is a precious resource that we have to support the success of these efforts and bring positive change to many people’s lives.” In addition, $400,700 in grants to 61 local nonprofits were given through the Bama Works Fund of Dave Matthews Band in CACF. This Fund supports charitable programs in the Charlottesville area with particular focus on disadvantaged youth, needs of the disabled, protection of the environment, and the arts and humanities. “The Dave Matthews Band’s continued generosity to the people of this community is remarkable,” said Scott. “Through the Bama Works Fund in CACF, established in 1998, the Band has touched and improved the lives of many in our local area. Tom Tom is a venue-based festival that transforms Charlottesville’s historic Downtown Mall through mostly free events open to the public. In 2013, it brought 390 musicians and 72 performances of all genres to over 30 bars, galleries, block parties, restaurants, and public spaces. Applications are online at www.tomtomfest.com/playTTFF, and solicit information such as bands’ best singles, videos, and media clips to be reviewed by Tom Tom’s music committee. The deadline for submissions is January 10, 2014. Some of the highlights of Tom Tom’s free concerts include the McGuffey Block Party, held on the steps of a historic schoolhouse-turned-gallery, Fellini #9’s JazzFest which shuts down part of 2nd Street for a multigenre street party, the Opening Gala in the Haven Sanctuary, and Picnic Day in Lee Park. Tom Tom’s previous performers have included The Walkmen, Josh Ritter, MiMosa, and The David Wax Museum, but the backbone of each festival are the diverse, up-and-coming artists nominated by Tom Tom’s community of Virginians. Music is only one part of Tom Tom’s “innovation” programming. In addition to concerts, the Festival features talks, workshops, competitions, installations, and mixers on themes of entrepreneurship, technology, creativity, and community. Like Tom Tom’s musical performers, the Festival draws as much of this programming as possible from the community. Beyer calls it “crowd-sourcing.”

SURPRISE! What: SURPRISE is an exhibit and a bicycle-based print distribution event
When: Opening Reception on Friday, January 3 from 5:00-9:00 p.m. and bicycle delivery of prints on January 17-19 in partnership with Community Bikes SURPRISE is a group exhibit featuring work by the following artists: • Patrick Costello • Victoria Long • Leif Low-Beer • Ellen Nielsen • Mike Perry • Travis Robertson • Julia Sharpe • Roger Williams Each artist will display one sculptural work and a related limited edition print. The prints will be gathered into sets, bound with twine and accompanied by a flier explaining the exhibit. In partnership with Community Bikes, volunteer bicyclists will distribute the sets indiscriminately to passers-by on the street on January 17-19. SURPRISE hopes to be a participatory, analog, non-commercial, and impulsive art distribution project. It is intended to take art out of the galleries and into the streets via direct delivery to the public. A knowingly unpredictable exercise, the distribution of the prints creates an unexpected interaction between artist and audience. The print sets (which will include letterpress, screen-print, photocopy, etc.) will not be sold or made available for subscription. SURPRISE is curated by Victoria Long. There will be a First Fridays opening reception on Friday, January 3 from 5:00-9:00pm. This event is FREE and open to the public. But while Jefferson’s old place has the most famous view around, there are properties galore to rival it. A recent online search found 670 properties for sale in Central Virginia with mountain views, with prices ranging from $30,000 – yes, $30,000 – for a humble home in Schuyler, to seven figure numbers topping out at $14 million for grand, luxurious homes in Wintergreen, Stoney Creek, and the Albemarle County hunt country around Keswick. “Nelson, Albemarle, Greene counties all snug right up to the mountains,” REALTOR™ John Ince of Nest Realty Group says, “and offer not just spec-

tacular views but a hint of a bygone lifestyle of self-sufficient folk living off the land with kitchen gardens, a milk cow, apple butter and moonshine.” “A home with a great view is high on the list of priorities of people moving from densely populated areas,” says Denise Ramey of Roy Wheeler Realty Company. “Typically you have people from northern Virginia who’ve been accustomed to living on quarter-acre lots with nothing to see but other neighbors and roads and townhomes, and the number one thing they want when they look at Charlottesville and other areas is some kind of a view.” There are a few basic factors to consider when searching for homes with mountain vistas. “You can be up on the mountain and have Blue Ridge Mountain views, or you can be down in the valley and looking up,” says RE-
ALTOR™ Brian Chase of Wintergreen Resort Premier Properties. “There are those two drivers of interest: do you want to be up looking down, or do you want to be down looking up. Obviously the grander the view, the greater distance that you can see, the more dramatic those cascading mountain views are, the more value it has in the marketplace. But you can get a mountain view in a condominium setting for a relatively affordable amount of money.” “A view to one person is not a view to another,” says Mary Newton of Keller Williams Realty. “So when I’m working with buyers and they say they want mountain views, I say ‘describe how it looks; show me a picture.’ People that want mountain views often want to create a scene for themselves. Some people, when they say they want mountain views, want the vista, and
other people want it in their face.” Buyers also should keep in mind how long the view lasts. As Newton puts it, “There is such a thing as winter views versus year ‘round views versus can-get views with select cutting. Those are the three criteria.” Ability to preserve the view is another factor to consider. “Protecting the viewshed can be difficult because you’re not necessarily going to own all the land in your view,” Newton says. “Are there any conservation easements? What’s going to protect that view from changing? Are there trees in front that you don’t have control over that are going to obstruct your view in 10 or 15 years?

If you want a year ‘round mountain view, you’re starting at a half a million dollars. Generally,

Nelson’s higher end properties attract many buyers from other parts of the state, and far outside it. “In Wintergreen and Stony Creek, probably 85-90 percent of buyers are out of the local community,” Chase says. “People are buying second and third homes for vacations or they’re relocating to the area for retirement.”
Albemarle and Greene Counties Prices in Albemarle County start in the mid-$200,000s for a townhouse, but high end, custom built homes are popular here as well. “If someone wants something that is very private, we’ve got lots of great homes with great views,” Ramey says, “and if someone wants more of a neighborhood, they can live in Old Trail (in Crozet) or Western Albemarle. Part of the reason Old Trail has been one of the fastest selling neighborhoods in our area is it has the best of all worlds – amenities in the neighborhood like walking trails and parks and playgrounds and a vibrant commercial center. At the same time, while you’re sitting at the swimming pool or playing golf you have incredible views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. And you’re also 10 or 15 minutes from the Blue Ridge Parkway, so for people who love the outdoors and love to hike and enjoy outdoor activities it’s the best of all worlds.” Indeed, the little town of Crozet west of Charlottesville offers “some incredible views,” Newton says. “You’re looking at Blue Ridge. You can get really good mountain views for $150-175,000 for the land alone.” The 320 lots of the Dogwood Valley subdivision in Greene County, sitting close by Shenandoah National Park, are prime terrain as well for homebuilders who want mountain views. “Some of the best views we’ve got are Greene County,” Newton says. “In Dogwood Valley you can get some really nice views for $25,000.” Chase himself owns a home on the mountain that gives him “million dollar views for the price of a condo. I’ve had that for just about 14 years,” he says. “Nothing is better than stepping out in the morning and sipping your coffee and looking out over the long mountain views. It’s pretty awesome.” And awesome is obtainable. “There are a lot of options, a lot of availability right now,” Chase notes, “and great opportunities in those homes that offer year ‘round mountain views.” n

Open Fire? “Historically, people heated their home with an open wood-burning fireplace in every room,” says Jonathan Schnyer, co-owner of Wooden Sun, a fireplace and stove retailer in Charlottesville. “Basically, though, they were taking most of the heat out of the house.” The National Association of Home Builders says fireplaces are in the top three “want-to-have” items in a house. The glow of a fire is romantic and welcoming, however as Schnyer points out, fireplaces are very inefficient. Much of the heat goes straight up the chimney and leaving the damper open as the fire dies is like leaving a window open. Traditional masonry fireplaces are usually lined with special fire-resistant bricks. These days, some “prefab” fireplaces are factory-built metal boxes lined with refractory bricks that withstand high temperatures while having low thermal conductivity to keep the heat inside the fire box.

Airtight glass doors prevent much heat loss while allowing you to see the flames and also provide a measure of safety for children and pets. Still, most glass doors are not really airtight and they quickly can get sooty and require cleaning. There are also systems available that use fans to direct more of the heat into the room—some installed when the fireplace is built and others as add-ons.
More Efficient Heating “Fireplace inserts and free-standing wood stoves both work better than a simple fireplace,” Schnyer comments.
“They are very comparable as a way to retrofit a fireplace with something that really produces heat.” An insert fits inside the existing fireplace while a wood stove is freestanding on a hearth, often has legs and heats a little better, although it requires more clearance. EPA-certified inserts and stoves are efficient and clean burning. Because the chimney is closed except for necessary venting, much less heat escapes than with a traditional open fireplace. Also, because modern inserts and stoves burn more efficiently, often by recirculating the heated air within the unit, there is less outside air pollution than with an open fire. If you have an existing fireplace and chimney, you can get a free-standing
stove for as little as $1,000, says Schnyer. You can also spend up to $8,000 for a fancy European-looking stove, but much of that cost is simply aesthetic. The venting system could be as little as a few hundred bucks. He explains that an insert costs a little more because it requires a firebox or “surround,” which covers up existing bricks in fireplace. Pellet stoves are another option. “They are not particularly popular in our area,” says Stuart Harter of Acme Stove and Fireplace Center in Charlottesville, “partly because inexpensive cut wood makes them less attractive economically. In some places they are a very good option. They burn very cleanly and can be vented right out a wall, so you don’t need a chimney.” Increasingly these days, many people choose a high-efficiency wood-burning fireplace. “It’s basically a factory-built wood stove,” explains Schnyer. “It functions exactly like a wood stove but it’s designed to be installed right into the wall in a new home or during a complete retrofit. It doesn’t require special clearance or even a hearth.” He says these systems are definitely more expensive than inserts or stoves. “They start around $2,500 plus the cost of the chimney and the installation. But there are some super-efficient systems out there and you easily can cut your heating bill in half. If you can get free wood, it’s even better.” Schnyer heats with wood. “I have a small wood stove and a large house and I love it,” he says. “I enjoy the fire and hauling the wood around.” He pauses for a moment, then concludes with clear satisfaction, “There’s something spiritual and meditative about lighting and tending a fire.” n Marilyn Pribus and her wood-splitting husband live in Albemarle County near Charlottesville. A freestanding Jotul wood stove provides most of the heat for their home.
Be Fireproof It’s important to have an approved, properly-sized stove or insert and a safe liner for your chimney. While you can buy a stove or insert yourself, most people don’t know the ins and outs of safe installation. Jonathon Schnyer of Wooden Sun suggests that installation should be left to professionals. “Not having your system installed correctly can be frustrating to operate, burn more wood than necessary and, even worse, be a fire danger.” Stuart Harter of Acme Stove and Fireplace agrees. “The National Fire Protection Agency and the Underwriters Lab have guidelines that comply with fire codes,” he says. “Professionals have specific training and deal with installations all the time.” Harter also urges annual chimney inspection. “With some of the newer stoves, people only need to have the chimney swept every other year, but it’s a good idea to have it checked annually.”
