Local Food Pantry Adds Special Holiday Hours Loaves & Fishes Food Pantry, Inc. is opening its doors for additional hours in November and December to accommodate higher numbers of people expected near the holidays. Additional food distribution hours for the remainder of November and December are Wednesday evening November 18, 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m., as well as 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. on each Wednesday evening in December. “We often have long waiting times just before the holidays,” said Executive Director Margaret McNett Burruss. “We started the additional Wednesday evening hours at the beginning of November, and currently there is very little wait during those hours. Our goal with the additional hours is both to reduce wait times, and to make up for the days we are closed for the holidays.” The pantry is closed several dates in both November and December for Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Eve. The dates the pantry will be closed include Wednesday evening November 25 (closed for evening hours only, open in the afternoon), Thursday November

26, Saturday November 28, Thursday December 24, Saturday December 26, and Thursday December 31. About Tom Tom Founders Festival Tom Tom Founders Festival is a 501c3 nonprofit that hosts dozens of free events every year in Charlottesville, VA. Its mission is to celebrate and empower founders, who build creative, civic, and entrepreneurial ventures from scratch. In 2015, Tom Tom featured dozens of events, including six free block parties, a farm-to-table restaurant week, four pitch competitions, and a public art series. Former U.S. Poet Laureate Rita Dove will make a guest appearance as the narrator in Randol Bass’s arrangement of The Night Before Christmas. She is the only poet to have received both the National Medal of Arts from President Obama (2011) and the National Humanities Medal from President Clinton (1996). Ms. Dove is currently Commonwealth Professor of English at the University of Virginia. On both days, small ensembles will treat audience members to festive carols before the concerts and during intermissions. The Saturday concert is sponsored by Hantzmon Wiebel LLP. Additional support is provided by the Office of the Vice Provost for the Arts at the University of Virginia. Come late November, a drive or a stroll down Constitution is the perfect way to view the park’s annual Celebration of Holiday Lights. “It is a very popular event because people can ride through the park and enjoy the lights and displays,” says lifelong Staunton resident Angel Cooper. “Some of them are animated, and some have music that plays as part of the display.” Beginning with only 10 displays back in 2004, the Celebration has steadily grown. Last year its more than 50 installations, all created by businesses, churches, clubs, and families, were seen by over 30,000 visitors. A special “Field of Deer” portion of the exhibition is created by individual city residents to honor and memorialize loved ones; signs and decorated trees honor police officers and American armed forces as well. The 2015 Celebration of Holiday Lights runs from November 23rd until January 1, beginning each evening at 5:00 p.m. On Saturday, December 12 at 5:00 p.m., sponsoring families for this year’s Field of Deer will speak about their loved ones in a heated tent by the park pool. On December 18, Calvary Baptist Church will present this year’s live Nativity and petting zoo.

Just down the Mall in the Omni Hotel, the theme for this year’s Gingerbread House Village is “The Magic of Christmas.” The Village will be open Sunday, December 6, 4 :00 to 8:00 p.m., Monday, December 7, 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 8, 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Wednesday, December 9, 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Admission is free. Also at the Omni, on Wednesday, December 16 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., Mrs. Claus will host her annual Mrs. Claus Invites party, with singing, dancing, storytelling, craft-making and cupcake decorating. Tickets are $10 (kids 2 and under get in free), and must be purchased in advance. All proceeds benefit the Ronald McDonald House of Charlottesville. Saturdays through December 19, from 8:00 a.m. till 1:00 p.m. at Water and South Street, more than 100 vendors will offer holiday gifts and decorations as part of the Charlottesville Holiday Market. Hungry browsers will find food trucks selling baked goods, Mexican and Caribbean specialties, dumplings and more. On November 27, 28, 29, 30 and December 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello will hold its 29th annual wreath-making workshops – threehour affairs at the David M. Rubenstein Visitor Center. On Sunday, November 29 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monticello will celebrate the beginning of the holiday season with its Third Annual Holiday Open House, including free tours of Jefferson’s (seasonally decorated) home. The Shop at Monticello will offer tastings and treats. Evening tours of Monticello for adults and children ages 6 and up will take place December 11, 12, 18-23 and 26-30 at 5:15 p.m., 5:30 p.m., 5:45 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. These small-group house tours will include the Dome Room and will offer an intimate look at how the holidays were celebrated in Jefferson’s time, plus the rare opportunity to experience Monticello after dark. Tickets are $55. Portions of this tour are not handicapped-accessible. Monticello’s 5th Annual Holiday Classic 5K and Deck the Halls Kids Dash will be held on Saturday, December 5 from 7:00 to 9:00 a.m. Kids 12 and under can dash ‘round the quarter mile, West Lawn loop at 8:10. The family-oriented 5k race will begin on the East Walk of Monticello at 8:20. Tickets are $35 for the adult race only, $55 for the race plus a trail support donation, and $10 for the dash. Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Architecture-loving Thomas Jefferson was forever building and remodeling Monticello. Maybe if he’d made a gingerbread mock-up he’d have gotten it right the first time. A mini Monticello (perhaps with a Frank Gehry addition?) will be the retro but really cool design

choice at Monticello’s 2015 Gingerbread House Family Workshops. Recommended for families with children ages five and up, the two-hour workshops will be held on Saturdays, December 5 and 12 at 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., and on Sundays, December 6 & 13 at 2:00 p.m. at the Woodland Pavilion in the David M. Advance reservations are required. James Madison’s Montpelier holds a Christmas Open House with Mr. Madison on Saturday, December 5 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The last mansion tour will be 4:00. Santa will visit the Visitor Center from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., where visitors will enjoy cider and cookies, hear a holiday choir, and admire the Decorating Corner featuring cookies and pine cones. On Sunday, December 6, at 1:00 and 5:00 p.m. at the Paramount Theater on the Downtown Mall, Moscow Ballet presents The Great Russian Nutcracker, with 40 Russian dancers, playful puppets, hand crafted sets and over 200 costumes. In the second act of Moscow Ballet’s version of this holiday classic, Masha and her Nutcracker Prince arrive in the Land of Peace and Harmony where all creatures, animal and human, live in accord with each other, and where two dancers form a soaring white bird with a 20 foot wingspan. Tickets range from $30.00 to $177.00. Gian Carlo Menotti called his inspirational, one-act, hour-long opera Amahl and the Night Visitors “an op-

On December 4 at 5:45 p.m., the Madison Chamber of Commerce will kick off the season on Main Street with Friday Night Christmas Lights – a tree lighting ceremony with cookies, hot chocolate from Gray Ghost Beverage, and music by Jessica Weaver & Silver Linings.
