T
he past few months have been busy ones for live music. No, not for the kind we go hear in the club or the concert hall, but yes for the kind we make for ourselves in our living rooms and on our front porches. With live music venues closed due to Covid-19, the music making has shifted to home studios, couches and rocking chairs—and computer screens. The app we’d never heard of until a few months ago, the one we love to hate but would hate to be without—Zoom, of course—is now the site of concerts, lessons, jam sessions, and all manner of musical merrymaking. The music economy may be dire right now, but the music hasn’t died and the party isn’t over; it has only shifted lo-
cales. Music lessons in particular are still happening all over Charlottesville. Let’s visit a few local groups and individuals dedicated to teaching music, and see what they do in normal times and what they’re up to now.
The Front Porch At The Front Porch in Charlottesville, Pete Vigour and other devotees of oldtime acoustic Americana have seen little drop-off in the number of eager learners. “So far, we’ve had really positive feedback regarding online lessons,” Vigour says. “People still value connecting with their instructors and seeing them weekly.” Teaching on Zoom, Vigour says, has had its own learning curve. “We started right away in mid-March, so there was really no break in the class. We went straight from regular lessons one week
LOCAL MUSIC LESSONS IN GOOD TIMES AND BAD to Zoom lessons the next. It’s been challenging and of course everybody’s had technical issues, but they’ve gradually learned. Many of the teachers are keeping all their students.” It’s no surprise that Vigour himself has been teaching music for 30 years, not when he grew up in Waynesboro playing fiddle, banjo, guitar, mandolin, and ukulele. “There were four kids in my family and all four of us played as young kids and experimented a lot,” he remembers. “There were always instruments lying around the house and we were encouraged to make noise with them.” Church choir and various schoolrelated musical groups supplemented what Vigour was learning at home, and then in high school, in the late 60s, he joined another student’s jazz band, playing big band tunes by luminaries like Glenn Miller and Tommy Dorsey. “At that time there were a lot of people in their 50s, say, that had done ballroom dancing, maybe had courted just before or after World War II and had done a lot of dancing to the big bands. So, there was actually a lot of interest in that kind of music.” Later, Vigour recalls, “I started getting interested in the old-time musicians that were in my area and learning about the traditional fiddle music that had been right there, that I had never really known about.” In normal times Vigour gives individual private lessons for kids and adults on old time and folk fiddle, clawhammer banjo, mandolin, ukulele, and dulcimer, pretty much the same array of instruments he first took up as a kid. On Monday nights he conducts a jam session, typically with ten to twenty people. Vigour also holds several all-ages classes, including one covering the standard repertory for string band music. A class called Rise Up Singing is based on a songbook of the same name first pub-
“It was such a joy showing up to the various locations each week and getting to make music with excited kids,” he says now. “I think we did a good job of inspiring confidence and joy around making music together.”
B# Music Over at B# Music on Woodbrook Drive, Bill Sanderson teaches piano, guitar, mandolin, banjo, and ukulele, all in private, one-on-one sessions, all now on Zoom, Skype, or FaceTime. “It’s a challenge, but it’s good,” Sanderson says. Sanderson’s uncle played guitar, his grandmother played bassoon, and his aunt was a voice teacher; all went to music college. “I started taking lessons when I was probably 14 or 15,” he says, “in upstate New York, from a guy named Carmen Caramanica—he was Lou Rawls’ musical director.” He himself began teaching in 2003 and maintains an average of about 50 students, nowadays, with guitar and piano being the most popular instruments.
Learning to play an instrument, Sanderson affirms, “is a great feeling. It’s so easy to click on a YouTube link and let it show you how to play a song, but it’s not that easy to actually play the instrument. You have to put in work, time, and effort, and when you really work at it, and you play something, it’s very rewarding. It’s one of my favorite things to do all day.”

Music & Arts
“With our guitar students, whether it’s a classic rock song or just a song they’ve heard on the radio, they can bring that in and within a couple of lessons they can get it completely under their belts, and then that kind of branches them into other music.”
The Center for Vocal Study At The Center for Vocal Study, the goal is to let the music branch from body to soul. “When we get into exploring the physical voice, it invites a conversation about the metaphysical voice as well,” says founder Heather Hightower. “How are we showing up in our lives; are we sharing the gifts that we have inside of us? “The Center for Vocal Study aims to be a safe space for singers who have a gift to keep working with it to bring it into the world. We provide voice coaching that focuses on the whole person. We specialize in helping people find confidence, happiness and freedom in their voices.” The daughter of educators and music lovers, Hightower studied vocal perfor-

Piano and guitar are the most popular choices at Music & Arts on Route 29, which offers lessons for kids and adults on most orchestral instruments. “We usually we have 180-200 students at a time, kids and adults” says Retail Manager Joe Gomala. “Lessons are all online right now. Usually I have six studios that are full pretty much all day long.” Gomola’s parents and his three siblings are all musicians. His mother taught piano, and he played trumpet and baritone sax in his middle school band. Later he fell in love with the guitar, now his main instrument. Majoring in Psychology at James Madison University, he minored in Music Industry: “I was going to go into music therapy, because I think it can be that beneficial,” he says. “From a hobby to a career, I think it’s always therapeutic.” How long, then, would it take a beginning student to start having fun and be able to play something? “You learn theory, you learn some scales before you can play a piece,” Gomola answers, “but if we’re talking “Hot Cross Buns” or “Mary Had a Little Lamb” level stuff, we’re talking in the first couple of months.”

lished in 1988 by the legendary Sing Out! magazine, co-founded by Pete Seeger. Updated in 2004, the book now contains 1,200 more songs. Front Porch founder Emily Morrison grew up in Ferrum, Virginia in a musical family, played banjo and other instruments from a young age, and was exposed to traditional music at school and in her neighborhood. She opened The Front Porch on Water Street in 2015, where it currently has 17 teachers, 300 or so students, and divides its teaching year into three sessions. Charlottesville-based songwriter and band leader Matt Curreri now teaches online audio recording classes for The Front Porch. While the pandemic has put his other work there on hold, Curreri has been working alongside Morrison in a number of programs since the Spring of 2018. “Hometown Choir is a big fun choir practice where Emily leads the singing and support on guitar,” Curreri says. “At Blue Ridge Juvenile Detention, we had a mix of learning drums, guitar and bass in a rock band format and also recording original hip hop vocals over beats found from various sources. At Walker Elementary School, it was semiprivate lessons on band instruments led by a couple great local horn players and me. And at community centers and after school at public elementary schools, I would bring a bag of ukuleles and percussion instruments along with six I-Pads, and we would write songs and explore sounds.”

mance and choral conducting at UVA, taught music in Guatemala, began the Field School of Charlottesville’s boy’s choral program. “I love using my classical training to sing sacred music,” she says, “and I often make my humble musical offerings in the church. The Center was a spontaneous creation in the fall of 2016 beginning on the Downtown Mall. I endeavor to serve the musical spirit even when it leads me on unexpected adventures!” Nowadays Hightower is excited about the new, ten-month personal business program she’ll start leading soon. Entitled “The Musician’s Way: The Art of Doing Business from the Heart,” it’s set to begin in September 2020 and run till June 2021. “The program can be summarized as a coaching program for creative artists to build service-based businesses they love,” she says. The Musicians’ Way will meet virtually; enrollment is limited but is open to participants from anywhere in the world. “I’m really excited about this. It’s the fruit of the past decade of my life.” While Center classes typically take
place in its building on Pantops, it is also currently offering socially distanced practicing sessions, and Hightower has been pleasantly surprised at the results. “The speed at which people are dropping into a deeper space within themselves is really beautiful,” she says, “and I think that has to do with the fact that they’re in their own space; they have agency over the mute and video buttons. They sometimes feel comfortable trying out sounds knowing that other people in the room can’t hear them. Zoom is a surprisingly effective platform for helping people find confidence in themselves and their voices. It’s totally different than a choir—it’s a leading edge, it’s a brand-new facilitation space.”
Good for What Ails You “With many people having more time on their hands, they’re finding creative ways to keep themselves busy,” Vigour says. “Music is a great distraction and stress reliever.” And you don’t need to have the makings of the next Prince, build your own recording studio, and master 12 instruments to have fun making home music. “The guy from Pearl Jam put out a ukulele album,” Sanderson notes, and it’s true, in 2011 Eddie Vedder released an album called Ukulele Songs. A full 16 songs fit on that record—it turns out that the four-stringed instrument best known for “Tiptoe Through the Tulips” isn’t well-suited to long jams! But where rock stars lead, less glamorous mortals will follow. And when they do, Charlottesville’s music teachers stand by to help.
