he Blue Ridge Home Builders Association (BRHBA) has hosted the Parade of Homes for more than 50 years. But this year’s Parade will be like none other. The first two weekends of October, Saturdays and Sundays, from noon until 5 p.m. are given over to exploring what’s new in the Central Virginia residential scene. Always an exciting time, the Parade connects builders, buyers, lookers, and dreamers. Whether you’re in the market for a new home, designing your own, or just thinking about painting a bedroom, the Parade of Homes has something for you. Especially this year. Like everything else 2020, the coronavirus pandemic has made a big impact on how the Parade of Homes is being conducted. Initially, that felt like a bad thing. But it turns out, there is a whole lot of upside to the way the Blue Ridge Home Builders Association has responded to a little virus getting in their way.

Safety First From the first hint that physical distancing might still be in play in October, Jenny Tapscott, Executive Director of BRHBA, and the planning committee focused on safety as the number one priority. “We are taking all precautions to ensure that attendees have the best and safest experience possible, which includes making the Parade entries accessible even from the safety and comfort of their own homes. For the first time ever, all our 2020 Parade of Home Entries will be featured digitally in the 2020 Parade of Homes Virtual Tour. The Virtual Tour, sponsored and produced by AirLens, LLC, will feature all 21 properties in the Physical Parade of Homes Tour, as well as five Virtual Only entries.” The Physical Parade of Homes tour is sponsored by Nest Realty. From noon to 5 p.m. on October 3-4 and 10-11, people can enjoy an in-person tour of 21 beautiful homes in and around the Charlottesville area. For the Physical Parade, face coverings will be provided by sponsor Dominion Energy and will
be required for visitors and hosts. The number of visitors in each home will be limited to six at a time with appropriate physical distancing between each group. Sponsor Guaranteed Rate is providing hand sanitizer in each tour home. Tapscott says “Anyone considering touring the homes in person can rest assured that they will be in a safe and sanitary environment. It’s a real treat to come out and actually walk through these beautiful homes.”
Going Virtual Understanding that not everyone will feel comfortable on the Physical Tour, BRHBA committed to making the best of the situation and put the entire Parade online. Not only can viewers see the 21 homes on the Physical Tour, but there are five additional homes that are virtual only. The Virtual Tour will be available for the entire month of October. It can be found under the 2020 Parade Homes tab at the BRHBA Parade of Homes website: brhbaparadeofhomes.com. By following the links from each home to their respective Virtual Tours, viewers can explore a Matterport scan and video tour of any of the 26 Parade entries. To get in touch with a specific home builder, viewers can complete a contact form on each entry page. BRHBA President Jodi Mills is 100 percent on board with this year’s virtual approach to the Parade. “Yes, we made
a big shift this year in taking the Parade of Homes to a more virtual platform with COVID-19 concerns in mind. But it also reflects how folks are viewing and reevaluating visiting model homes and buying today, with or without a pandemic going on.” Tapscott agrees. “Homebuyers won’t even go see a house unless they’ve already viewed it online. We decided to add that capacity to this year’s Parade of Homes and use some high-tech tools to give people exactly what they want. We are fortunate to have the incredible talents of Airlens, LLC, to make this Virtual Tour such a great addition to the 2020 Parade.”
Joining the Parade A great place to start this year’s Parade is online with a map of featured homes. Whether touring in person or attending virtually, there are homes in Crozet, Charlottesville, Keswick, Palmyra and Zion Crossroads. This year’s Parade features 26 homes by 10 of the area’s premier home builders. All Parade participants are builder members of BRHBA and the homes are new construction only. While some of the homes have already been sold, all the homes on the Physical Tour are vacant. One of the advantages of participating in the Parade is the chance to engage with so many different builders. Some of the area’s larger homebuilders like Craig Builders, Ryan Homes, Southern Development Homes, and Stanley Mar-
tin Homes have multiple entries in the Parade, showcasing a variety of styles and settings. A handful of custom homebuilders like Arcadia, Bramante Homes, Inc., Dominion Custom Homes, LLC, R.L. Beyer Custom Homebuilders, and Selinger each have a single entry. New to the Parade is True Living, LLC, with two entries this year.
Custom Builds to Model Homes Suzie Pace, with Pace Real Estate Associates, LLC, represents R.L. Beyer Custom Homebuilders Inc. and expects this year’s Parade of Homes to be quite different. She hopes to have personal visitors tour their home in Ashcroft, but she doesn’t expect the large crowds like in past years. “The Parade is a wonderful opportunity to see people that you might not otherwise encounter.
