Drive-in Movies Let’s get straight to the most fun part. Waitresses on skates bringing hamburgers and milkshakes will not be seen—and probably not missed—at the Festival’s first-ever drive-in screenings. This 21st century, socially distanced, expedient but welcome revival of an old and beloved American way of seeing “flicks” will bring us some of the Festival’s top 2020 picks including its Opening Night, Centerpiece, and Closing Night selections. Seven films will be shown in all, in two new spots: the recently opened Dairy Market in Charlottesville, and at picturesque Morven Farm in southeastern Albemarle County. Tickets are being sold per vehicle, with a limit of five passengers per car.

Opening Night Film: One Night in Miami

“Over the course of the evening these friends begin to discuss their roles as influential black men,” Kielbasa says, “the struggles they endure, and the roles they think they can and should play in the Civil Rights Movement.” One Night in Miami will be shown on the evening of Wednesday, October 21 at both locations.

Centerpiece Film: Ammonite This year’s Centerpiece Film, Ammonite, features Kate Winslet as the noted 19th century British paleontologist Mary Anning, who lives alone on the bleak and rocky English coast. When a desperate tourist leaves his troubled wife (Saoirse Ronan) with Anning, in hopes that the work will revive her spirits, the women’s awkward and uneasy relationship blossoms into a powerful love affair that irrevocably alters both of their lives.

Virginia Film Festival 2020 will open with the upcoming Amazon release One Night in Miami, the directorial debut of Academy Award-winning actress Regina King. Based on Kemp Powers’ stage play of the same name, the film tells the story of a fictional February, 1964 meeting of four Black heroes today and then: a once controversial fighter for racial justice, a flamboyant boxer, a handsome pop icon, and an all-star Cleveland Browns fullback. As Malcolm X, Sam Cooke, and Jim Brown join Cassius Clay (soon to change his name to Muhammad Ali) to celebrate Clay’s upset victory over the fearsome Sonny Liston, the talk turns serious.

7 OCTOBER 21 - OCTOBER 27, 2020 ISSUE 2942

When the going gets tough, the tough get creative. Or, shall we say, the creative are tough? Put it any way you like, but COVID can’t spoil the feast of first-class films and fascinating film talk that the Virginia Film Festival offers every October in Charlottesville. So customize your popcorn—or your charcuterie plate—and settle in for this year’s (mostly online) edition, from October 21 through October 25, featuring at least one potential blockbuster, plus documentaries, international films, shorts and more, plus in-depth conversations with actors and other film industry and cultural leaders. Over seventy virtual events may be enjoyed at home. But if you’re itching to get out of the house and watch something in company, and on a bigger flat screen than can fit in your living room, seven great films will hit the big screen at two socially distanced drive-in locations. This year as always, the Festival that bears the name Virginia will look like Virginia—and like the rest of the nation. “The Festival continues its commitment to diversity and equity in our programming, an effort that was redoubled in the wake of the many tragic events that we’ve seen across our country this year,” says Festival Director and UVA Vice Provost for the Arts, Jody Kielbasa. “Over 50 percent of the filmmakers included in our program—and the artists, experts and community members participating in our virtual discussions—are women or represent Black, Indigenous and People of Color communities.”

Directed by Francis Lee (God’s Own Country), Ammonite is an awards season favorite, with Winslet’s performance being hailed as among the best of her career. It will be shown on the evening of October 24 at both locations.

Closing Night Film: Nomadland The 2020 Closing Night Film was the winner of the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto Film Festival. Based on Jessica Bruder’s 2017 book about wandering older Americans, Nomadland has been called “a poetic character study of the forgotten and downtrodden.” Starring Frances McDormand as a rural Nevada woman who loses everything in the Great Recession, takes off in a van, travels the West, and joins a community of other

modern day nomads, the film “perfectly captures the sense of displacement we feel today,” Kielbasa says. “This is a film that will stay with you long after the experience of seeing it.” Nomadland will be shown at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, October 25 at Morven.

Gunda While the average city slicker/locavore foodie is more aware than ever of farm life these days, for those of us who haven’t known its rhythms firsthand, paying close and close-up attention to a gazing pig, a gently lowing cow, or a chicken finding its wings can be a revelatory experience. Wordless, and filmed in gorgeous black-and-white, Gunda is an extraordinary documentary “that takes you into the world of farm animals in a way you’ve never seen them before,” Kielbasa says. Gunda will be shown on Friday, October 23, 2020 at 7:30 p.m. at Morven.

Shiva, Baby MLK/FBI It’s an American shame that the title MLK/FBI is all one needs to see to know what this film’s about. But while Herbert Hoover’s preoccupation with discrediting Martin Luther King, Jr. is widely known, director Sam Pollard’s 2020 documentary draws on newly declassified files, archival footage from the 1950s and 1960s, and recent interviews with Andrew Young, James Comey, and others to further detail the relentless campaign of surveillance and harassment Dr. King endured. MLK/FBI will be screened at Morven on Thursday, October 22 at 7:30 p.m., and

at Dairy Market on Thursday, October 22 at 8:00 p.m.

Shithouse Animal House redux it is not, but still it takes a frat boy mind to name your place of residence . . . never mind. A coming of age comedy shot on a tiny budget, Shithouse was written and directed by Cooper Raiff, who co-stars as Alex, an out of place and depressed college grad

struggling in the post-college job market. Dylan Gelula plays Maggie, a sophomore RA who has her life together but is coping with an unexpected loss. A night out at Shithouse, party central on campus, brings them together and ultimately sets them on a path to maturity.

Shiva, Baby Life is complicated enough without one lover your parents don’t approve of

Virtual Program The Virginia Film Festival’s Virtual Program, to be hosted on the Eventive platform, will offer over 50 narrative and documentary features, curated shorts packages, and tributes and conversations with industry and cultural leaders. Here are just a few.

The Good Lord Bird Ethan Hawke stars as abolitionist John Brown in SHOWTIME’s upcoming series The Good Lord Bird, a humorous and historical look at Antebellum America. This Festival program will feature sneak peek clips and conversations with Hawke and 15-year-old co-star Joshua Caleb Johnson, executive producer/screenwriter Mark Richard, costume designer Amy Andrews Harrell, and executive producer and author James McBride, author of the book on which the series is based.

Boy’s State What is American masculinity today? What should it ideally be? The ancient Greeks raised aristocratic young men to become responsible, informed, and active citizens, and boy, no pun intended, could we use more young people—of all classes—like that now. The documentary Boys State follows a thousand Texas high school senior boys as they gather for a week-long summer program that is an elaborate mock exercise in building a state government. Along the way we meet strongminded kids like Ben, a Reaganloving conservative, and Steven, a son of Mexican immigrants, who remains firmly progressive amidst a sea of red. Presented by UVA Center for Politics, Boy’s State will be introduced by U.S. Senator Tim Scott (R, SC). Post-film discussions with Governor Terry McAuliffe, filmmakers Jess Moss and Amanda McBaine, and film subject Steven Garza, will be moderated by Larry Sabato.

Special Presentations This year’s Festival program will also feature three Virtual Special Presentations, each of them free with online registration. Since 1999, Light House

1882 WESTVIEW ROAD

has been equipping young people with the skills and confidence to tell their stories and build community through collaborative filmmaking. Every year the Festival showcases the work of Light House students by showing several of their short films. Fifteen will be available online this year, including Chef Claire (a girl who tries to open a restaurant) and The Startup (a boy takes over a shipping company and has hilarious difficulties finding quality staff). All shorts will be eligible for audience awards. A guy with 15 Academy Award, like film composer Thomas Newman, is going to have plenty of stories and insider insights. In A Tribute to Thomas Newman, Charlottesville Symphony director Benjamin Rous will ask Newman about his four-decade-long career. This presentation will also feature clips from The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, American Beauty, Finding Nemo, the James Bond films Skyfall and Spectre, and last year’s Golden Globe winner for Best Picture, 1917. Newman’s frequent collaborator, director John Lee Hancock, will also take part. Leslie Odom, Jr. won a Tony Award for his performance as Aaron Burr in the Broadway smash and nationwide conversation starter Hamilton. UVA snagged Odom for a performance as part of its bicentennial celebration in 2017, and now he’s back to talk about his career and his role as the legendary Sam Cooke in One Night in Miami. Other Festival guests will include

actor Linda Hamilton, former NPR Host Diane Rehm, Obama and Reagan White House photographer Pete Souza, Johnny Carson’s Tonight Show bandleader Doc Severinsen, and Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul creator Vince Gilligan.

How to See the 2020 Virginia Film Festival Virtual All-Access passes cost $65 plus a handling fee, and grant access to screenings and events included in the on-demand Virtual Program. They are not good for Drive-In Movies or Special Presentations. All Virtual films can be seen beginning on October 21. In most cases, viewers have 24 hours from the time they begin to finish watching a film. Tickets for Drive-in movies are $25 plus a handling fee. The three Virtual Special Presentations—the conversation with Leslie Odom, Jr., the tribute to Thomas Newman, and the showing of Light House Studio Shorts—are all free. An undertaking like the Virginia Film Festival—a much anticipated bright spot on the annual cultural calendar—doesn’t get off the ground without the dedicated support and far-seeing vision of a lot of good people. This year’s Festival is dedicated to the late Gerald Baliles, governor of Virginia from 1986 to 1990, and one of the Festival’s founders and fervent advocates. Thank you, Governor Baliles. And now . . . light’s out. Let’s watch a movie!
