uy a bigger flat screen if you need to. Or just use your laptop. By hook or by crook or only by imagination, step through the digital display and into that historic 19th century room, that museum gallery, that concert hall. Take in a lecture, an exhibition, a musical soiree or jam session. There may be precious few events happening in a crowd right now, but there are plenty waiting to happen in your living room and (sooner than seems possible when the cold wind blows) on your front porch or back patio. Yes, Virginia, there are old-fashioned, pre-pandemic style events going on this spring, and we’ll mention them too, but let’s not overlook and disparage the cornucopia of “virtual” but completely real delights to be enjoyed from the comfort of home.
Monticello itself—the home, the estate, the lovely mountaintop setting—is operating under winter hours. Guests will find enhanced safety measures and a redesigned, family-friendly experience with lots of outdoor events. Tickets may be purchased online. Monticello also offers periodic livestreams. On Friday, March 12 from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m., Chef David Bastide will teach a class on French brasserie fare, with Poulet à l’Estragon (Tarragon Chicken) as the main dish. Bastide will use ingredients grown and harvested from Monticello’s gardens. Guests can cook alongside the chef from their own homes, learning to prepare an authentic French meal. Prior to class, participants will receive preparation instructions, including a shopping list, recipes, and menu with wine pairing suggestions.

Over in Orange County, James Madison’s Montpelier home and grounds are open, with appropriate COVID precautions. Especially cautious history buffs can also explore video offerings like Virtual Lunch: Do You Know What This is? and Beads, Buttons, and Other Small Finds on Montpelier’s Digital Doorway blog. Thomas Jefferson: The Crisis of Union That Died in 1799 on March 9 at 3:00 p.m. Ragosta is the author of Patrick Henry: Proclaiming a
You can experience Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello several ways online nowadays, including hour-long, live virtual tours. Follow Monticello guides as they lead you through the first floor of TJ’s mountaintop home, provide private, unobstructed views of the house and collections and lead discussions of important issues such as Jefferson’s role as a nation builder and the vital part enslaved African Americans played in his plantation’s daily operations. Tours are offered at 2:30 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. on Wednesdays and Fridays.

Virginia Discovery Museum
Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Galleries may not be holding monthly openings now, but art lovers can head to Richmond’s Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, which is open and free to the public as always. On exhibition through August 1 is Virginia Arcadia: The Natural Bridge in American Art, which explores the artistic legacy of an iconic natural wonder, the Shenandoah Valley’s breathtaking Natural Bridge, through paintings, prints, decorative arts, photography and more. Featured artists include Frederic Church, David Johnson, Edward Hicks, and many others. On display through the end of May, the woodblock print series, the Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido Road, was designed by Utagawa Hiroshige (1797–1858) and first published in 1833–34. Its fifty-five images, capturing iconic landmarks and areas, are among the most recognizable in all Japanese art, and offer viewers a form of vicarious travel. Included in this exhibition are twelve prints from the series, which VMFA acquired in full for its permanent collection in 1952. Also on view through May 23 is Masterpieces From The VMFA Collection: The First Hundred Years of Photography, 18391939. Many of these 19 works, by artists such as Eugène Atget, Imogen Cunningham, Louis Émile Durandelle, Timothy

Each week will feature a new letter geared toward kids in preschool through early elementary. The activities will use common household items; supplies will be posted before each week’s meet-up. The leprechauns will be on the loose in the Discovery Workshop on Tuesday, March 16 from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m., and Miss Frankie will need help catching them.
