NEWS & VIEWS What’s Happening Around Town? Addressing Equity Discrepancies in Nonprofits New Compensation Report Suggests Persistent Equity and Compensation Issues in the Nonprofit Sector Women and people of color hold significantly fewer leadership and technology positions and earn far less than their male counterparts in the nonprofit sector, according to a new report by Center for Nonprofit Excellence (CNE) and The Community Foundation for a greater Richmond. The report compares, for the first time, data from the Greater Charlottesville and Greater Richmond regions. It includes data on staff benefits and compensation of leadership staff and lowest paid, full-time staff. The data are compared with national data from the GuideStar Nonprofit Compensation Report and the Occupational Employment Statistics. Responses from 236 nonprofits are included, 92 from CNE’s service area and 144 from the Community Foundation for a greater Richmond’s service area. According to the report, only 9 percent of leaders in Charlottesville and 13 percent of Richmond leaders were people of color, however people of color constituted 35 percent of the lowest paid full-time staff. On average women outnumbered men 2:1, but there were almost no women in top facilities management or technology positions. On average, top female administrators in Charlottesville earn 83 cents for every dollar their male counterparts earn, and in Richmond women earn 76 cents to every man’s dollar. The data also highlight regional differences in nonprofit salary ranges compared to salary ranges reported nationally. Not only did regional salaries fall below the national average for comparable positions in the for-profit sector, they also fell below the national average for nonprofit salaries of like positions. The Compensation Report’s free discussion guide includes questions for boards and executive staff to consider how to recruit and maintain a competitive workforce.

“We are pleased to be able to offer for the first-time this comparative regional nonprofit compensation and benefits data that wouldn’t have been possible without our partnership with the Community Foundation for a greater Richmond,” said Cristine Nardi, Executive Director of CNE. “While our benchmarking data suggest that local nonprofits don’t escape the compensation issues we see at a national level, both the Community Foundation for a greater Richmond and CNE are developing programming and resources to support organizations in addressing these issues.” “In some ways, this report highlights what we already knew—equity is an important issue for nonprofits, just as it is in other sectors,” said Sherrie Armstrong, President & CEO of the Community Foundation for a greater Richmond. “Creating an equitable nonprofit sector means creating a culture in which everyone feels they belong and are valued. Getting to that point will require personal, organizational and community change.” Based on the findings of the Compensation Report, CNE will be offering an Equitable Human Resource Practice workshop series in February and March of 2019 to address many of the compensation and benefits discrepancies in the nonprofit sector, especially surrounding race and gender. The series consists of three trainings, covering culture, hiring and on-boarding, and employee benefits. The dates for the trainings are February 15, February 22, and March 1 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Center for Nonprofit Excellence. For nonprofits seeking to consider alternative ways to offer compensation, CNE also recently released its Sabbatical Case Study based on a 2015 sabbatical taken by its Executive Director. The case study includes steps for planning and implementing a sabbatical. Sabbaticals can be an excellent way to rejuvenate staff and offer non-financial compensation to hard-working employees. The 2017 Compensation Report is available for purchase on CNE’s website (www.thecne.org) and comes with a free discussion guide. CNE is offering discounted access for smaller organizations now through January 31, 2019.

The Sabbatical Case study is available for free on the CNE website. About Center for Nonprofit Excellence Center for Nonprofit Excellence (CNE) in Charlottesville, Virginia is the region’s nonprofit resource center. With 290 members, CNE has built a dynamic community of practice. We are an honest broker, a trusted guide, and a voice for and about the nonprofit sector. Other performances took place at Vinegar Hill Theater, in the vestibules of Mall banks, and at the Carver Rec Center, where a steel drum band from Charlotte led the celebrations at midnight. One of the Statler Brothers sang that night, as did a pre-Dave Matthews Band, Boyd Tinsley. Rob Coles, the fifth great-grandson of Thomas Jefferson, and his spitting image, gave his popular TJ impression, and there were fireworks, courtesy of Darden Towe. “We had about 25 different acts,” Spencer says. “The idea was that people could come and go; you did not have to stay for a full set. The performers were aware of that and accepted it. That was one of the patterns we set up initially that made it so successful—that people

carpet, sanding floors, replacing countertops. Your REALTOR® is familiar with nearby homes for sale and can advise you on what needs to be done so you compete well against them. Like many agents, Betty Aguilar with Nest Realty also advises sellers to have their home inspected, especially if you have lived there for awhile. The inspection report will let you know about needed repairs you can reasonably do yourself and give you time to find the best, most cost-effective professional to handle big items like the roof, or HVAC. If you learn about the repairs from the buyers’ inspector you will be under pressure to find someone who can do the job quickly to meet contract deadlines, which could cost you more money. Also you may be forced to get all repairs done by a licensed contractor even if some are items you can easily fix yourself.

CAAR REAL ESTATE WEEKLY WWW.CAAR.COM

re you in the market for your next home? Perhaps a floor plan or neighborhood caught your attention when you visited the Parade of Homes back in October. Or maybe you need more space for a home office or nursery. Perhaps you have plans to downsize or move to another city to be near family. Whatever your reason for buying a home, the good news is that now is a great time to sell your current one. REALTORS® report they have eager buyers out viewing homes even during the winter months and that many of them are frustrated because they don’t have a lot to choose from. And in some popular neighborhoods, homes are going under contract almost as soon as a sign goes in the yard. To take advantage of this terrific market it is critical to get your home ready now. Your best advice on how to do this will come from your REALTOR®, however here are some ideas to get you started so you can enjoy a quick sale and be speedily moved into your next home.

View It with a Buyer’s Eye When your home goes on the market it loses its status as your refuge and becomes a commodity, one that must compete effectively with other similar houses for sale. This means preparing

it to look its very best, especially if you are in a price range to compete directly with new construction. To start, imagine you are a buyer eager to move in and live in the home with minimal hassle. Notice what needs to be fixed from a garage door that you’ve been meaning to paint, to a leaky faucet you stopped noticing months ago, to a non-functional knob on a closet door. Most homeowners have lived with issues like these for so long they ignore them. However, buyers see them as problems that have to be solved, money that must be spent and Saturday afternoons working on the house instead of watching their favorite sports team or taking their kids for a bike ride. Plan also to remove clutter including from countertops, bookcases, end tables and other surfaces. Take down pictures, report cards and children’s artwork from the refrigerator. These may have sentimental value for you but buyer prospects will see them as distracting eyesores.

Don’t overlook cupboards and closets. Expect buyers to open every door, look inside and ask themselves if the house has enough storage space. Make sure everything is squeaky clean, and don’t forget to remove fingerprints from cabinet fronts and dust from fan blades and the top of your refrigerator. A buyer’s first impression comes from the exterior so make sure it looks exceptional. Are hoses neatly coiled and out of sight? Are bikes, lawn equipment and trash cans neatly stowed away? Do you need to power wash and reseal decks or porches? When weather permits, add colorful bedding plants to your landscaping and in pots on your deck. A tasteful flag or a seasonally appropriate wreath is a nice addition as is fresh paint on your front door.

Manage Repairs Always consult your agent before undertaking major projects—painting interior walls or the exterior, upgrading

The Right Price is Key Your agent will prepare a CMA (Comparative Market Analysis) and recommend a list price based on the condition of your house compared to that of other similar homes currently on the market, those waiting to close and those already closed. Your agent’s knowledge of the price and condition of these other homes is essential for advising you about the right list price for yours.

Show It to Sell Light, bright and spacious homes are what sell, so when there is an appointment to show, open the drapes, pull back shower curtains, put out clean towels and turn on lights, even in the middle of the day. If your home has third party certification of high performance assets such as is available from Pearl Certification, be sure to display that information along with fliers highlighting the home’s amenities and upgrades (like the new roof or the energy-efficient AC, self-closing skylights or maintenance free siding or deck). Always leave during showings. Drop your dog at daycare or take him with you. Notice odors like doggy smell or cat litter and take steps to remove them. Your agent can advise you on how to do this. If selling in 2019 is a priority, call your REALTOR® today for the best advice about how to get the quickest sale at the best price. If you are staying in the area, they will also help you buy your next home, and if you move elsewhere they can refer you to a top notch agent in the market where you are relocating.
