NEWS & VIEWS What’s Happening Around Town? Women United in Philanthropy Human Services Grant Finalist Presentation On Tuesday, May 21,2019, Women United in Philanthropy (WUP) members and guests will hear brief presentations by each of five area non-profits who have applied for programmatic or project-based funds that will benefit women and children in Charlottesville and surrounding counties. This event, which is open to the public, will take place in The Paramount, Balcony Lounge at 5:30 p.m. After a brief social, presentations will be heard from 6:00 p.m.–7:00 p.m. Following the presentations, current members will vote to distribute a total of $60,000 in grants ($30,000 each), to two local non-profits. The recipients will be announced publicly, at the Human Services Grant Award Luncheon in September of 2019. Since its inception in 2005, WUP has awarded more than $500,000 to local organizations. “This is a critical moment in our grants process for these five organizations,” said Kimberlee Barrett-Johnson, who chairs the grants committee. “It is remarkably inspiring for our members to hear about the good work that is strengthening our community and each member takes her responsibility—to vote for the strongest grantees—quite seriously. “All of our funding is made possible through the generosity of WUP members and the power of collective giving.” WUP grants are funded through membership, and the 2019 WUP membership drive is still under way. Individual Membership starts at just $100, with Corporate and Underwriter opportunities available. For more information about Women United in Philanthropy, membership, and the grant process, visit www. WomenUnitedCville.org. About Women United: Women United in Philanthropy is a collective giving organization formed in 2005 in partnership with United Way-Thomas Jefferson Area. Our mission is to engage with like-minded women, learn about philanthropy, and leverage collective

giving to support local women and children. Each year WUP awards grants to community organizations that serve women and children in our area.

K - 12 Educators Invited to Free Summer Computer Science Institute On Tuesday, May 21,2019, St. Anne’s-Belfield School, in collaboration with the University of Virginia Curry School of Education, will host a Computer Science Institute for K – 12 educators on July 22 and 23, 2019. The Institute is open to teachers from all disciplines and aims to help demystify computer science, build a regional computer science community, and increase access to computer science for all students. “Often professional development tends to be about getting hands-on with new tools or getting excited about new concepts, but it leaves the participants on their own to figure out how they incorporate this new learning into their practice,” said Kim Wilkens, co-coordinator of the Computer Science Program at St. Anne’s-Belfield School and of the Institute. “That’s why we devote time and resources to mentoring and supporting you as you work toward integrating CS into your teaching in a meaningful way before you leave.” With one day dedicated to a learn-athon of “all things computer science,” the Institute will offer a second day design-a-thon during which participants will explore strategies for teaching computer science in ways to reach all students. In the afternoon, participants will join elementary, middle, or high school cohorts to work together on computer science-infused lesson plans. For more information and to register for the 2019 Computer Science Institute, please visit http://summerspark.stab.org/educators St. Anne’s-Belfield School is a co-educational, preschool through grade twelve day school of nearly 900 students and more than 150 faculty and staff, with a boarding program in grades nine through twelve. Fifteen countries are represented in the student body, with 40 percent of students receiving financial aid. More information may be found at www.stab.org. n

I

t’s Tuesday afternoon, April 9, 2019, and the triumphant University of Virginia Cavaliers basketball team has just returned home to Charlottesville after two of the most exciting Final Four wins in NCAA history. A few nights before, fans filled the Paramount Theater to watch the Hoos take on Auburn in a 62-60 semifinal loss—no wait, a 63-62 miracle win! Two nights later they gathered at both the Paramount and the John Paul Jones Arena to watch, suffer through, and fi-

nally revel in the game for the national championship. Now they were celebrating. “You guys have been so faithful,” coach Tony Bennett told the crowd. “Not many fans cheer when you get shot clock violations from your defense, but you guys know.” Yeah, we do. We know how the Hoos win games and we know how their University and the town they represent are so entwined that when you say “Charlottesville,” if the first thing people think of is Thomas Jefferson, the second is the school he originated, the school whose “academical village” and “grounds” he designed.

Two hundred years on, that University has brilliantly fulfilled his vision of an institution for “the diffusion of knowledge among the people.” In its 2019 ranking of best national universities, U.S. News & World Report puts the University of Virginia at the number 25 spot. The website Niche puts it at number two among public American universities and number three among big American colleges. Or they just come because they’re proud Virginians. Whatever they come for, they often stick around after graduation, starting a business, opening a restaurant, joining a practice, and enriching an already fortunate community. Fellow UVA grad and Nest Realty Strategy Director, Jonathan Kauffmann, agrees. “It’s tough to pinpoint an aspect of our region that isn’t influenced in some way by the University,” he says. “Whether someone has an affiliation with UVA, or not, before they move here, the University undoubtedly has a positive impact on every single member of our community in some way or another.”

Impact On the Economy Much of that impact can be demonstrated with hard numbers. Together the University of Virginia and University of Virginia Health System and other associated organizations are the largest employers in the Charlottesville area, comprising nearly 20,000 people. A 2016 economic impact study commissioned by UVA found that the annual statewide impact of the University’s Academic Division, Health System and College at Wise totals $5.9 billion, with its research arms alone accounting for

$644.5 million, supporting 10,845 jobs through direct, indirect and induced employment. Of this total, $4.8 billion remains in the local Thomas Jefferson Planning District. In the Commonwealth as a whole, UVA directly or indirectly provides 51,653 jobs—one in every 76 in Vir-

ginia. A partial list of local employers and the number of UVA alumni and students they employed February 2016 illustrates the economic intertwining of town and gown: UVA Health System—342; Albemarle County Public Schools—142; University of Virginia Darden School of Business—90;

James Madison University—89; City of Charlottesville—71; Merkle—70; SNL Financial—69; CFA Institute—52; Piedmont Virginia Community College—41; US Army—39; University of Virginia Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy—39; Martha Jefferson Hospital—39; PRA Health

line-grabbing culinary scene here are all awash in UVA energy. “I’d say that the UVA community and the Charlottesville community are really one community,” Kauffmann says. “The most relevant example is during this recent NCAA Championship run by the basketball team. “You couldn’t go anywhere in and around Charlottesville without seeing locals decked out in orange and blue. Everyone at UVA and in Charlottesville, whether they were basketball fans or not, really got behind this team and gave them their full support. But it goes beyond school spirit, too. Whether you went to UVA, Virginia Tech, or some other school, there’s absolutely a respect for UVA, its history and what it means not just to our area, but the entire state.” “For me, there is no better community to raise a family than ours,” says Frank Quayle, President of Roy Wheeler Realty Co., and former color commentary for the UVA Football Network. “Exceptional public schools were the foundation for our children to attend some of the nation’s finest institutions. Their young lives were wonderfully enriched by UVA sports and their many interactions with the University. Just think what a much different town Charlottesville would be without the University of Virginia!”

wall-to-wall carpeting. “Pull up a bit of carpeting in a closet to check,” she recommends. Even if there’s no hardwood, it’s relatively easy to replace carpet with a style or color that suits your taste. Many stores offer samples to take home and visiting model homes or looking on the internet can give a good idea of available colors. Some choose to install laminate that closely mimics hardwood.

Quick Fixes for the Nearly

One couple found their nearly-perfect property with wall-to-wall carpet in decent condition in the bedrooms, but the hardwood in the rest of the house was marred and stained. They hired a professional floor refinisher who sanded the rest of the house and the husband—no stranger to a paintbrush—applied polyurethane sealant over a long weekend.

Perfect Home BY MARILYN PRIBUS

CAAR REAL ESTATE WEEKLY WWW.CAAR.COM

F

inding the perfect house in the Charlottesville area can be a problem with our local real estate market’s rising prices and limited inventory. Take Sara and Lamont Sandridge who had been renting for a couple years. Now, with a new daughter, they were eager to purchase their first home. They Googled and Zillowed, dismissing one place after another. They toured properties with REALTOR ® Bob Hughes of Nest Realty in Charlottesville. One house had a great location, but was just too small. They liked another but it was on a too-busy street. The inspection report on another showed significant problems with mold. “It’s hard to find something,” Hughes declares. “You don’t always have time to negotiate or someone will beat you to it. You have to pounce.” After about eight months of diligent searching, Hughes ultimately showed the Sandridges a promising house in

a quiet neighborhood, although it had odd-colored walls, wobbly light fixtures, and oh-so-dated amber-colored plastic panels in the kitchen cabinets. Fortunately, Lamont’s uncle is a professional house painter and Sara’s dad a competent handyman and the couple could picture the property transformed into a home they could love with a just a few tweaks. So they pounced. Four months later they were settled in with freshly painted walls throughout, up-to-date light fixtures, and open shelving replacing those amber-plastic cabinets. Great example, says Karen Kehoe, a REALTOR® with RE/MAX Realty Specialists in Charlottesville. “These days people can’t afford to be too picky,” she says. “They need to consider the not-so-perfect place.” Unless the inspection turns up major defects, she points out there are often some quick fixes. Here are some common “turn-offs” and some ideas to update, refurbish, and replace.

The Kitchen

Quick Fixes for the Walls Repainting with a single neutral hue throughout makes the paint job go faster and is the easiest and least expensive tactic. With a light tone, you might even paint the ceiling the same color saving that painstaking “cutting” where the wall meets the ceiling. And remember, neutrals today have definitely moved beyond white. In fact, even beige is becoming a bit passé with pale greens and greys moving up on the popularity quotient.

Quick Fixes for the Floor These days, most people prefer hardwood flooring. Kehoe points out that, depending on the age of the dwelling, there may be hardwood underneath

Here’s where things can really look dated. But those dark cupboards can be painted or the doors removed to create an open look. Or completely replace the cupboards with open shelving. An overhead fluorescent fixture? Replace it with pendant lights. Install a new sink fixture. Then there was the woman whose new place included a harvest-gold fridge. (Harvest gold? That was hot in the 1970s!) For a modest cost, she updated with a slightly used double-door stainless refrigerator. With a larger budget you can replace stained counters or flooring, add an up-to-date sink or backsplash.

Quick Little Updates Replacing light fixtures—particularly in bathrooms—works wonders. Replacing or repainting the front door is another project completed in a day or less. When replacing the locks—as you always should with a new-to-you property—choose bright new hardware.

Three Important Pointers First, remember those things you don’t love about a house don’t make it unlivable. Projects can be done over a period of time, spreading the effort and expense over weeks or months. For instance, since it’s easiest to repaint when the house is vacant, plan to add pizazz later with an accent wall or wallpaper. Second, while in many cases homeowners can make improvements themselves, many lack the skill, time, or interest. In that case, Kehoe suggests a handyman. “Ask your REALTOR® for a recommendation,” she urges. “We all have a list of people we trust and rely

on.” Get estimates on every project and check references. Finally, Kehoe says, “Get a home warranty. Ask your REALTOR® to recommend a reliable home warranty company.” She explains that for under $1,000, you can insure your home—especially an older one—against failing heating and air conditioning systems, plumbing problems, and appliances such as a water heater or refrigerator. There is often a deductible and situations will be repaired rather than replaced, but it can take a lot of worry off your mind. n
