Waynesboro and Staunton Shine During the Holidays

CAAR REAL ESTATE WEEKLY WWW.CAAR.COM

‘T

is the season! Ham and turkey sandwiches, gingerbread cookies, and Christmas lights season, that is. Yes, with Thanksgiving just behind us (except for the leftovers) and Santa expected soon, the holidays are full upon us, the mall looks a little tacky, and the postcard-perfect, Instagram-ready downtown streets of Staunton and Waynesboro are at their most picturesque. A charming streetscape and a small town atmosphere lend extra cheer to the holiday rituals, and whether it’s shopping for gifts or making your own, taking the kids to The Nutcracker or taking in a holiday concert for grown-ups, Augusta County is the perfect setting. Let’s see what’s happening.

Holiday Gifts Perhaps the greatest joy of the season is picking out gifts. If we can’t all don red suits, scare toddlers, and awe their big brothers, we can still be Santa Incognitos, making our lists, checking them twice, and spreading a little holiday happiness to the naughty as well as the nice.

BY KEN WILSON

The architecturally noteworthy city of Staunton, more inviting than a mall on any day, is especially charming during the holidays, when its boutique and artisan shop windows tantalize with handmade gifts for all ages and interests. Take the R.R. Smith Center for History and Art, where the current show is entitled “Gifts of Art that Give in Return” and features handmade fine art and crafts by over 65 juried Virginia artists, many new this year. Kids can make their own gifts at a Children’s Art Workshop, Saturday, December 7 from 10:00 a.m. to noon. Participants may create beautiful winter scenes by layering tissue paper and stippling and splattering acrylic paints. For holiday cheer to hang on a tree, try Sunspots Studios Artisan Center, a gift gallery and glassblowing studio in downtown Staunton that offers traditional and glow-in-the-dark ornaments. The Center is open seven days a week, and seven days a week its glassblowers give live demonstrations. Sunspots glassblowers will also assist adventurous customers, ages seven and up, in making their own art. Reservations are required and the cost is $50

Breakfast with Santa The mission of the MaDee Project is to support pediatric cancer patients. The historic Stonewall Jackson Hotel and Conference Center has been providing elegant rooms for social functions since its reopening in 2005. No wonder then, that Santa is making time in his very busy schedule for the MaDee Project’s Breakfast with Santa on Saturday, December 7 at 8:30 and 10:30 a.m. Guests will enjoy a continental breakfast and hot chocolate bar, plus

to $55 per ornament. Each takes 10 to 15 minutes to produce. Ornaments are ready for pick up or shipping the following day. The studio’s gallery/gift shop is filled with beautiful art glass—vases, hummingbird feeders, oil candles, jewelry and more—much of which is blown on site or produced by other local artisans. The Staunton Augusta Art Center is another spot where children and adults can make and exhibit arts and crafts. The Center’s current Art for Gifts exhibition, on view through December 31, is an annual, juried holiday show offering shoppers original fine art and craft by 60 artists. Special Holiday hours are Monday through Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and Sunday 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.

Ebenezer Scrooge, soon to see the error of his ways. Dickens himself performed a oneman version of A Christmas Carol over 100 times. For the 2019 holiday season, December 4-29, American Shakespeare Center is presenting a new adaptation, with a cast of 13 players, by James McClure based on Dickens’s own performance script. The first two performances, December 4 and 5, are pay-what-you-will. Also in repertory this season, December 7 through December 26, is Every Christmas Story Ever Told, advertised as a “fast-paced romp through favorite holiday classics,” and a “tinsel-covered rollercoaster ride bursting with laughter, carols, and joy.” The show is appropriate for ages seven and up. Parents should be advised that it includes a “Santa talk.” Fans of A Christmas Carol have a chance to see another production of the Dickens classic in Staunton this year, thanks to ShenanArts, the non-profit community theatre founded in 1981. ShenanArts will present A Fairy Tale Christmas Carol, December 13-15 in the ShenanArts Theater at 300 Churchville Avenue.

Lantern Tours Through Days Gone By Staunton’s Frontier Culture Museum is an outdoors museum that tells the story of the many people who made up colonial America, arriving free or enslaved from England, Germany, Ireland, and West Africa during the 1600s and 1700s. The Frontier Culture Museum will offer Lantern Tours on December 1315 and 20-23 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. The cost is $15 for adults and $8 for children. Reservations are required. Tours will begin every 30 minutes. Visitors will enjoy snapshots of life in England, Ireland, Germany, and America, and will enjoy a horse-drawn wagon ride from the Old World to the New World. Refreshments will be served and live music will fill the air at the Dairy Barn Lecture Hall following the tour.

Waynesboro Christmas Parade The Waynesboro Christmas Parade steps off in downtown Waynesboro on Saturday, December 7 at 6:00 p.m. Parade visitors are asked to bring a toy to be donated to the Toy Convoy, a local civic and business partnership program that serves local kids in need, from infants to 12-year-olds. In case of very inclement weather, the parade will be held on Tuesday, December 10 at 6:00 p.m.

Christmas with the Cratchits Most of the year, American Shakespeare Center is known for its high-spirited Shakespeare, performed in the beautiful Blackfriars Playhouse, the world’s only re-creation of the Bard’s own indoor theatre. Come

When The Nutcracker ballet was first performed, in St. Petersburg in 1892, its reception was lukewarm. While critics responded to its innovative and enchanting score by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, the choreography by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov left even some of the dancers ambivalent. How fortunes change. Adapted from a popular German short story by E.T.A. Hoffman, this evergreen tale of excited children, a threatening Mouse King, and a luminous Sugar Plum Fairy quickly became a holiday tradition for families across America after its introduction here, in San Francisco, on Christmas Eve, 1944. The Shenandoah Civic Dance Company, a not-for-profit children’s dance organization, has been dancing the ballet every holiday season in the Shenandoah Valley for 36 years. The company will present The Nutcracker at Wilson Memorial High School on Friday December 6 and Sunday December 8 at 7:00 p.m., and on Saturday December 7 at 2:00 and 7:00 p.m. The show features 125 local children from Staunton, Waynesboro and Augusta County. SCDC presents classical ballets for the Staunton, Waynesboro and Augusta County community, and has provided over a thousand area children the opportunity to perform. Reserved tickets are available online or by calling 855-222-2TIX (2849).

LISTEN. CAN YOU HEAR THAT?

Frontage along rivers and streams is attractive to many buyers, as are ridge top or hillside vantage points with a view. Whether for fishing, hunting, or just enjoying access to the great outdoors, buyers don’t have to go far to find whatever is number one on their list. It’s not unusual for people who are transitioning from a more distant urban area into the country to do double duty for a few years before they completely extricate themselves from a job and home in the city. Many of those people end up in our area to have the best of both worlds: being surrounded by nature and enjoying easy access to urban amenities.

The occasional car driving by. Maybe a dog barking in the distance. Lots of birds. Or just… nothing. People who choose to live a bit off the beaten path are often looking for quietude and elbow room between themselves and their neighbors. But these are not the only draws to the countryside.

What Drives Home Buyers to the Country? Read descriptions in CAAR’s Multiple Listing Service and it’s apparent. Just a few of the home listings in rural areas identify “resort-style living with unparalleled privacy and serenity!” Or “Potentially some of the best valley views in the area!” How about this lot that’s “ready for your new home or weekend retreat”? “Camp now, build later!” Or this one that “offers privacy, long frontage along the Rivanna River…and beautiful views.” David Ferrall, Associate Broker with Nest Realty Group, says that many of his clients are indeed searching for greater solitude and a more relaxed pace of life, and want to be surrounded by nature. “Maybe they can’t walk to work or to the corner coffee shop. But they do get to walk for enjoyment in the beauty of nature and the quiet of the countryside.” Besides that lifestyle draw, sometimes it’s the price, the view, or being able to own some land. The natural beauty of this area is a compelling reason for buyers searching for a perfect country setting with a killer view. One that makes the commute into work worth it once they get back home to their country oasis. While their city counterparts love the convenience of having a playground on the next block, many in the country may just prefer to own their own. Residents of downtown areas and subdivisions get to meet their neighbors and enjoy the daily interaction, while those out of town may relish the capacity for privacy and only having to deal with invited guests of their own choosing.

Country Living at a Discount There’s no doubt that the country life can be attractive, but there’s also no denying that sometimes economics comes into play. A look at the CAAR 2019 3rd Quarter Home Sales Report shows that there is a

Why Home Buyers Love

LIVING BY CARLA HUCKABEE

significant discount between median home prices in Albemarle County and Charlottesville compared to those in neighboring counties on the same side of the Blue Ridge. With the median price for Charlottesville at $355,000 and Albemarle County at $380,000, a buyer can save anywhere from $90,000 to $158,000 (at the median price) when they live further out. The median prices for Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa, and Nelson Counties range from $222,000 to $265,000. And several new developments are increasing the options available in some of these more rural counties. For

instance, a 126-home subdivision is nearly sold out in Ruckersville. This rural development offers affordable living with prices starting below $260,000 for a brand-new home with garage and a wide variety of home plans. Yes, there will be neighbors close by, but there is also easy access to shopping and medical services and a more than 500-acre park for recreation.

The Perfect Getaway But not everyone is looking for a discount. Some of those buyers want second homes, even those who live in Charlottesville that just want a getaway close by.

And sometimes it really is just that little bit of elbow room. Ferrall’s last two clients were people moving from Charlottesville to a rural setting. In the past couple of years he has had five clients move from the same subdivision into the country. They were looking for a lifestyle that offers the privacy, quiet and degree of solitude they couldn’t get in their suburban community. With lot sizes as small as they are in many developments, some people want a bit of a buffer between them and their next door neighbors. Step out on your back deck in the country and see the horizon, or an expanse of acreage, instead of your backyard neighbor waving at you from her deck.

Just Right for Every Taste Ferrall laughs as he considers how the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. “Buyers and sellers are both thinking, ‘wouldn’t it be nice …’ and fill in the blank.” Often the country sellers have a hankering to get closer into town. “Maybe they’re done dealing with the upkeep on a large property and are ready to move into town or a suburban setting. Meanwhile, they’re selling to someone who feels like the subdivision they are leaving might as well be Bethesda, Maryland!” One thing’s for sure: whether a country or city dweller at heart, your REALTOR® will be able to help you find just the right setting in central Virginia. Carla Huckabee writes at the nexus of health and real estate.
