Charlottesville Mural Project On Friday, November 22nd, the Charlottesville Mural Project (CMP) held a dedication ceremony for its fifth, large-scale mural by local artist Kaki Dimock in an ongoing campaign to showcase the talents of artists and designers while creating a more interesting visual landscape in the city. Drawing inspiration from Philadelphia’s Mural Arts Program (MAP) and similar initiatives, the CMP features local artists and designers, partners with youth programs, youth communities, and local businesses, and will produce at least two murals a year. Their latest

project was a mural at Buford Middle School in partnership with UVA and City Schoolyard Garden. Additionally, a small text-based mural was recently completed on the side of Fitzgerald Tire in the heart of downtown Belmont. Plans for the Rivanna Watershed mural began in the fall of 2011. Upon the prompting of Rose Brown, Program Manager for StreamWatch, the Charlottesville Mural Project invited the Rivanna Conservation Society, Rivanna River Basin Commission, and artist Kaki Dimock to design a mural that would promote the importance of the Rivanna River Watershed and celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the Clean Water Act. This federal statute enacted on October 18, 1972, provides a national framework for the public and private sectors to implement programs to protect the “waters of the United States.” Artist Kaki Dimock is known for her colorful ink and watercolor drawings that often depict animals and the theme of “home”. Dimock exhibits her work regularly throughout Charlottesville, often selling out the entire show. Explaining the meaning behind the mural, Kaki writes: “This design is intended to honor and recognize the importance of the Rivanna River Watershed, which includes the river and its feeder streams. The iconic images of the built community mix with larger-than-life wildlife. The fish are organized in a celebration of the return of American Shad to the Rivanna because the Shad are an indicator of water quality as they can only thrive in clean, healthy water. Other fish are representative of the species that live in the river with the scales and patterns reflecting the diverse aspects of our community. They draw attention to the interconnectedness of the river: trees, grass, roads, bricks, mountains and suggest that humanity find a way to successfully balance these aspects to support

the health of the river and thereby invite the return of the shad.” Painted on the back of the Tru Pilates business next to 1st St. S, the mural had the full support from building owners, Kurt and Alana Woerpel. However, due to regulations by the railroad department and the close proximity of the wall to the tracks, the mural had to be painted off-site in the Michie Building on Market Street. Funding for the mural came from a Kickstarter campaign in which $8,000 was raised. Over 125 backers from across the country donated to the project.

Lake Monticello Light Show Benefits Fluvanna Pet Charities One of Lake Monticello’s most spectacular holiday traditions, the light show at 4 Lewis Court, will also benefit three Fluvanna pet charities. The Fluvanna SPCA, a no-kill shelter in Troy, Caring for Creatures, an animal sanctuary in Palmyra, and Peaceful Passings Senior Animal Rescue are the recipients of donations made at this event. Lights will be turned on November 26 and will run through January 5 from 5:00 to 10:00 p.m. every night. The light show is set up each year at the home of Jeff Spinello and attracts people from all over the region. The show consists of over 40,000 lights with 4,000 feet of cable. It took 6 months of planning and 5 weeks to set up. Spectators can turn their car radio to 88.1 FM and listen to ten songs that run a total of 25 minutes, or they may enjoy the songs through speakers in the front yard. “We believe this is a great way to give back to the community,” says Spinello. “People enjoy the display and have generously offered to help with the electric bill. However, we’d rather see the money go to worthy causes such as Caring for Creatures, Fluvanna SPCA and Peaceful Passings.” Donation jars available for monetary donations to these animal care groups; Caring for Creatures, the Fluvanna SPCA and Peaceful Passings Senior Animal Rescue. In addition, boxes will be available for in-kind donations. The Fluvanna SPCA would appreciate canned dog food, non-rawhide dog treats, peanut butter, kongs, cat toys, and cat treats. Gingerbread at the Omni Back in 1994, the Downtown Business Association held the first Virginia Gingerbread Christmas competition “just for fun,” board member Morgan MacKenzie Perkins remembers. “The first year was really good, so I took it over.” Nowadays, Perkins says, “I’m kind of the mother of gingerbread. Every year it’s growing; we have thousands of people come through. Someday, Perkins hopes, Charlottesville’s event will be one of the country’s largest. This year’s entries, on the theme of “Stage and Screen: Favorite Movie or Play,” can be seen at the Omni Thursday, December 5 through Sunday, December 8. Santa will be on hand December 8 from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m., as prizes are awarded in Child, Youth, Teen, Adult, Family, Professional, and People’s Choice categories. “We have some

families who have been in since the first year,” Perkins says. “It’s fun to watch the kids grow up and go from the Child to Adult category – that’s neat.” Gingerbread Christmas festivities will culminate with Mrs. Claus Invites...! On Thursday, December 12th from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., kids can visit Mrs. Claus and her friends from the North Pole, decorate their own cookies and cupcakes, and well as make holiday arts and crafts. Holiday refreshments including cookies and hot chocolate will be served. Charlottesville Ballet will dance excerpts from the Nutcracker, and Mr. Magic will do tricks. “I believe it’s only fair that kids have a little magic in their lives,” Perkins says.

“Mrs. Claus Invites and Gingerbread are absolutely, positively wrapped around the kids. They’re an opportunity to give kids an old-fashioned holiday traditional Christmas.” Albemarle Bakery’s Riki Tanabe enters the Gingerbread competition every year and often wins. How long does it take him, working alone, to build, say, a sixteen inches by sixteen inches by two foot Paramount Theater like the one he entered last year? “Maybe eighty hours.” A labor of love? I do it for the kids,” he laughs. “There are a couple of us usual suspects who do it every year,” says Tim Gearhart of Gearhart’s Chocolates. “It’s always a lot of fun. Mine are actually painted chocolate, so mine generally look a little different than most.” Gearhart’s creations take him “anywhere from 20 to 50 hours” to make. “I usually do it over maybe a three-week period.” For Charlottesville’s 250th anniversary celebration last year, Gearhart built a Charlottesville tableau, complete with a streetcar, and a Thomas Jefferson modeled in chocolate. Don’t kids have the hardest time not touching these things? “Trust me that they touch,” Gearhart says. “Actually, I think it’s more often the adults that are touching it than the kids. I’ve seen it with my own two eyes.”

“Another thing I really love about Toan [Nguyen] is his entrepreneurship toward the local music scene,” adds REALTOR® Greenfield, herself a musician. “Cville Coffee gives a showcase for local musicians.” Sometimes there are modest cover charges and all that cover goes right to the musicians. “It’s such a nice thing for people just starting out to be able to play and for the audience to hear new music in a relaxing place with coffee or a glass of wine.” Rapunzel’s Coffee and Books on Front Street in Lovingston is another well-known regional music venue. They sponsor an openmic night the second Friday of every month and host a weekly acoustic open jam for musicians of all ability levels on Wednesday nights, beginning (their website announces) “about 7:00 p.m. (ish).” Rapunzel’s Further Ado Foundation was established to provide Nelson County with this space to promote the arts by featuring songwriters, bands, dance troupes and others involved in music, dance and art. Today Rapunzel’s is housed in a reclaimed 100+-year-old Packing Shed that has been transformed into a coffee shop, used book store, performing arts venue and recording studio. Customers enjoy a wide variety of coffee drinks, a long menu of various teas, plus wine, beer and cider along with home-baked goodies.

Whether you grab a cup-to-go between clients at one of several Starbucks in the area, at Java-Java or The Mudhouse on the Downtown Mall, La Taza Coffee House in Belmont with its Latin flair or a favorite spot near your home or office, central Virginia coffee houses reflect their communities in a wonderful way. These days, many coffee houses offer more than a fancy coffee or pot of tea. Wi-fi is a given, there may be muffins, scones and pastries baked in back or even a substantial menu. Some places have outdoor tables in season, art shows— usually with the art for sale—and special children’s (or adults only) areas.
