PCA Receives Bama Works Fund Grant Piedmont Council for the Arts (PCA) has received a grant from The Bama Works Fund of Dave Matthews Band in the Charlottesville Area Community Foundation (CACF) for a pilot project to provide the Charlottesville/Albemarle community with an interactive and searchable website and mobile-friendly resource for First Fridays events. First Fridays is an informal happening that takes place on the first Friday of each month. Art galleries on Charlottesville’s historic Downtown Mall may choose to host opening receptions for their monthly exhibits on this evening, often staying open late and offering refreshments to the public. However, there is currently no organizing entity
for First Fridays branding or marketing and no centralized source of information about the gallery openings. Thanks to this generous grant, PCA will develop and launch a centralized marketing and information resource for Charlottesville’s monthly First Fridays gallery event in accordance with recommendations made by focus groups and task forces in Create Charlottesville: A Cultural Plan for Charlottesville/Albemarle. This resource will function as a standalone website as well as a mobilefriendly site that will feature an interactive map with all local galleries and businesses involved in First Fridays. By creating a centralized marketing and information website for First Fridays, PCA will provide more visibility and marketing for local galleries and exhibiting artists as well as downtown businesses and restaurants that also benefit from the influx of visitors for the monthly event. The year 2013 was a good one for commercial real estate, one in which the market “picked up tremendously,” said Bill howard with real estate III Commercial Properties. while this was good news, 2014 is expected to be even better as real estate investors are becoming increasingly confident about the marketplace. a recent article in the National Real Estate Investor reports that “commercial real estate investors continue to be bullish.” This is based on results from an annual survey in which 72 percent of respondents said they believed commercial real estate offered favorable returns compared to other investment options. Locally, agents report that the phones are ringing again and business is looking up with activity in all parts of town.
What Drives Commercial Development The residential market has a big impact on commercial activity, and of course, the news there has been very positive lately. The mid-year market report showed both sales and median prices up compared to the same time last year. More people buying homes means increased demand for commercial services impacting everything from office space to retail. a stronger economy means more jobs, which in turn means more money to pay for commercial goods and services. The result has been a growing number of businesses coming in to lease spaces vacated by others that were either forced to down size or go under during the recent recession. another good sign, said hock hockensmith with roy wheeler realty Company, is that we are seeing more startups than we were a year ago, which have been helped along by the easing of financing in recent months. a big consideration for commercial investors is the number of major employers in a particular area since this is an indication of economic stability and a continuing supply of jobs. For example, the north end of town has ngIC, ge and the companies at UVa research Park. These, plus the many other commercial establishments in that area, generate as much as 50 percent of albemarle’s total tax revenues,

Plans for its new home at Fifth street station are still on track, howard said. In Fortune magazine’s 2013 survey of the top100 companies to work for, wegmans ranked fifth, and it is also known for giving back to its community. “we’ve all had a good year here,” howard said about commercial sales in 2013. Charlottesville Musicians Band Together For Haiti In time for the holidays, local musicians are coming together to support Project Haiti, and they’re doing it in an innovative way. By releasing one song a day over the course of 9 days, beginning December 20th, bands like Chamomile and Whiskey, Beako, and seven others will put out a free compilation album on County Wide’s website. All they’re asking is for interested listeners to give to Project Haiti, which is an initiative of the United States Green Building Council (USGBC). Project Haiti is building the first LEED certified orphanage in Haiti, replacing an older orphanage that was destroyed in the devastating earthquake of 2010. “We’ve created a morphing compilation titled Make It Be in which artists involved with County Wide will donate a song to support nonprofits every two years” says Founder of County Wide Records, Brian Overby. “As County Wide grows and changes so will the Make It
Be Compilation. For our first venture we’ve chosen to help Project Haiti. They’re in it for the long haul, and so are we. We want to help them do a lot of good.” The innovation in this is that these artists aren’t fundraising in a traditional way. Instead, County Wide is using the Bubuti button, designed by local startup, Bubuti, to help them help Haiti. In the words of Bubuti’s founder, Whit Faulconer, “We think it should be easier for influential people on the Internet to help non-profits, so we’re trying to address that issue. What we hope is that people see the button on County Wide’s site and in supporting Project Haiti, learn that they too can help the nonprofits they care about by incorporating Bubuti into their everyday work.” In the end, the bands just want to use their music to help others. As Koda Kerl from Chamomile and Whiskey remarks, “We’ve put this record together in the hopes that you will donate to this great cause. Though, of course, you can always have it for free.” Got News? The 32nd First Night Virginia takes place on Charlottesville’s Downtown Mall Tuesday, December 31, with nine hours worth of entertainment for the whole family. More than 45,00 people enjoyed First Night last year. This year’s attendees can catch music and magic, theater and dance, comedy and acrobatics – 73 separate performances and activities.

Music Veteran bebop pianist Hod O’Brien and his vocalist wife Stephanie Nakasian live here but play all over the world. For First Night the couple will be joined by bassist Peter Matthews and drummer Jim Howe plus their “secret weapon,” 19-year-old daughter Veronica, who sings as well. “It will be a fun night,” Nakasian promises. “We’re excited to be doing First Night again after 15 years.” Expect selections from the Great American Songbook, including standards by Gershwin and Porter, plus “a smattering of swinging seasonal tunes.” The swing begins at First United Methodist Church at 7:30 and again at 8:45 p.m. Charlottesville singer-songwriter Blue O’Connell is a Certified Music Practitioner who plays therapeutic music in nursing homes and at the bedsides of UVA hospital patients. Originally from Chicago, O’Connell has been a part of the local acoustic music scene since coming to town in
1989, and was a folk radio announcer for 20 years at WTJU. But what makes her unique is that she’s profoundly deaf, able to hear only because of her cochlear implant and hearing aid. “I was a regular performer at First Night Virginia for seven years beginning in 1989,” O’Connell says. “I am a storyteller and my performances for First Night are geared for the whole family. I encourage the audience to sing along or participate in some way if they wish to.” O’Connell will play a new First Night venue, Old Metropolitan Hall at 101 E Main St, at 6:40 p.m. “Some guys go out and buy fancy cars, some guys play poker,” says Paul Olko of the Beatles cover band Abbey Road. “We play Beatles music together.” A sixth grader when the Fab Four hit the American pop charts in 1964, Olko pleaded with his parents to let him restart the guitar lessons he’d been slacking on. “It was the Beatles that kept my drive, kept me practicing every day,” he says today. When Olko and his friends did learn how to play, it was Beatle songs they played most of all. More than three decades later, Olko realized a lifelong dream when he formed Abbey Road, originally named

Not a look-alike band, though they cultivate a Liverpool vibe, the local lads who play John, Paul, George and Ringo for fans all over the Commonwealth take pride in their musical fidelity. “Our goal was always to do the music really well,” Olko says. “We studied to the point of fanaticism exactly how the record is done. As best we can in a live setting, we try to reproduce that sound.” Today the group’s repertoire spans “Please, Please Me” through “Let It Be,” but on First Night they’ll concentrate on the early catalog, what Olko calls “the dancing Beatles” – the raucous tunes by the lean and hungry Beatles who tore up Hamburg bars and Liverpool’s storied Cavern Club. “People forget that they were a gritty pub band,” Olko says, a band that mixed now classic originals with covers like “Twist and Shout,” “Money,” and “Roll Over Beethoven.” Abbey Road will rock the Omni Ballroom at 10:00 and 11:15 p.m. The screams are up to us. High school students Meg Foster and Cazzie Olko (son of Abbey Road’s Paul Olko) are mature beyond their musical years, reaching back into the past to cover soul, blues, and jazz tunes by everyone from the Beatles to Louis Armstrong, as well as their near contemporary, the late Amy Winehouse. In other words, they have taste. Calling themselves The Broken Glass Conspirators, the duo will play the Christ Church sanctuary at 6:15 and 7:30 p.m. Charlottesville musicians Andy Rowland, Darrell Rose, Greg Howard and William “Whit” Whitten believe that music is the universal language. They’ll come together as World Beat to bring hope, healing, and irresistible rhythm to The Haven Sanctuary at 8:45 and 10:00 pm. The nine Deanes – actually four Deanes, two Kites, and three civilians in the current lineup – have been playing and singing bluegrass gospel music for about 20 years. Larry and Eddie Deane have been picking together since 1983. Central Virginia favorites known for their many benefit performances, they’ll bring mandolin, banjo, dobro, steel guitar and upright bass to the sanctuary of Christ Church at 8:45 and 10:00 p.m.

Film and Theater The folks at Light House Studio are all about helping students express themselves through filmmaking. Light House films have been shown on CNN and honored with a Peabody Award, a Gold World Medal at the New York
International Film and TV Festival, and a CINE Golden Eagle Award. For First Night the studio will screen family friendly, award winning short films including animations, documentaries and music videos produced by students this past year. Showings take place at 121 East Water Street, at 6:15 and 7:30 p.m. The improv comedy troupe Bent Theatre has been busting guts throughout Virginia since 2004, making comedy on the spot from audience suggestions. “Our players have all trained in house and many of them have gone on to teach their own groups and classes,” says Bent Theatre director Andy Davis. “Nothing is scripted, nothing is planned, anything is possible, and everything is hilarious.” Bent Theatre will entertain at 8:45, 10:00, and 11:15 p.m. in Christ Church’s Meade Hall. Ward Hill Lamon was President Abraham Lincoln’s law partner, friend and self-appointed bodyguard. In the one-man play Lincoln’s Bodyguard, Civil War historian Bob O’Connor chronicles their relationship through Lincoln’s days on the 8th Judicial Circuit, the Republican National Convention, the train trip from Springfield to the inauguration in Washington, and the assassination Lamon might have prevented had Lincoln not sent him to Richmond on national business. Performances take place at 6:15 and 7:30 p.m. at Grace Covenant Church.

The ballet The Nutcracker was judged a failure when it premiered in Russia in 1892. Generations of American families have since disagreed. For First Night, the Charlottesville Ballet will present The Nutcracker Suite, a condensed, child-friendly version of the holiday classic, at 3:00 and 4:15 p.m. in Christ Church’s Meade Hall. Since singer-songwriter Paul Reisler founded Kid Pan Alley in 1999, it has inspired 35,000 school kids across the U.S. to write and perform over 2,500 songs. Delbert McClinton, Sissy Spacek, Amy Grant, and Corey Harris are just some of the big name artists who’ve recorded them. Reisler will coax more songs from more children 3:00 and 4:15 p.m. in Old Metropolitan Hall.

The Virginia Discovery Museum at the east end of the Mall is a hands-on children’s museum teaching kids about the arts, sciences, humanities, history, and nature. The museum will host First Night’s Creation Station from 3:00 until 5:00 p.m. Admission for Fist Night wristband holders is free. Charlottesville’s Party Masters hosts events all over Central Virginia. They’ll provide lights and a live DJ for a teen dance party 7:30 through 11:30 p.m. at the Herman Key, Jr. Rec Center.
First Night History and Tradition The first First Night was held in Boston in 1975. Charlottesville was the second city in the country to hold the celebration, in 1982, and will be one of about 70 cities with First Night festivities this year. Often mistaken for a City of Charlottesville event, First Night Virginia is actually a volunteer-driven non-profit that receives less than 2.5 percent of its budget from city coffers, depending upon local sponsors – 43 businesses, organizations and fellow non-profits this year – for the rest. “A large part of our support comes from the public,” First Night president Drake Van de Castle says. “I want to give to a big shout out by name to Cindy Adams. She’s been our treasurer and secretary, and she’s put out a tremendous effort in recent years to turn First Night around. And I certainly want to give a shout out to the City of Charlottesville. They provide police support and facilities – a tremendous amount of resources and manpower. Without their support it would not happen.”

On December 31, adult tickets are $18.00, children’s are $7.00, and family packs are $43. On the day of the event, wristbands may only be purchased at the Omni. Seats for the Paramount shows may be reserved and guaranteed at the Paramount box office for $5.
