What’s Happening Around Town?

Kluge-Ruhe in Virginia’s Top 10 Endangered Artifacts Competition The Kluge-Ruhe Collection has nominated a bark painting as one of Virginia’s Top 10 Endangered Artifacts through a program sponsored by the Virginia Association of Museums (VAM). This painting, titled Ngalkunburriyaymi and Ngalyod, was made circa 1926 by Namerredje Guymala in Arnhem Land in Australia’s Northern Territory. In this painting, Guymala depicts the ancestral Rainbow Serpent, who takes three forms: Yingarna (the mother of all ancestral beings), Ngalyod (her son), and Ngalkunburriyaymi (Nglayod’s sister). Guymala portrays Ngalyod as a composite being with a crocodile head, a snake body, a fish tail, an emu breast plate, and kangaroo ears. Ngalyod protects sacred places by encircling and swallowing other beings. Guymala likewise represents Nga-

lyod surrounding Ngalkunburriyaymi, protecting her. Wally Caruana, former curator at the National Gallery of Australia, described Guymala as “a superb draughtsman with a recognizably individual ‘hand.’” He is known for his use of the artistic style – kabimbebme or “color coming out.” The bold red, black, yellow, pink and white stripes emphasize kabimbebme making Ngalyod appear to slither out from the bark. By preserving this work, the Kluge-Ruhe Collection hopes to continue to raise awareness of the complexity and sophistication of Aboriginal art. Yet, until we can prevent color coming off, we cannot display Guymala’s mastery of color coming out. Collections Manager Nicole Wade stated, “While this particular work is structurally stable, it has extensive areas of paint loss, and other areas of actively lifting, tenting, and flaking paint. Endangered areas can be consolidated and stabilized by a conservator, returning the work to an exhibitable condition.”

The Top 10 program, which runs from August 1 – 23, raises awareness about the conservation needs of museum collections throughout Virginia and Washington D.C. It also provides an opportunity for the public to participate by voting for a favorite artifact online here. Although the Top 10 honorees do not receive a monetary reward, museums can use the designation to draw attention to their conservation needs. A bark painting from the Kluge-Ruhe Collection was named to the Top 10 in 2011, and became the focus of a fundraising campaign. Voters can make donations on the Top 10 site or on KlugeRuhe’s website to benefit conservation at the museum of their choice. “We hope everyone in Charlottesville will support our nomination and vote for our bark painting,” says KlugeRuhe Director Margo Smith. Nominations will be reviewed by an independent panel of collections and conservation experts, and Top 10 honorees, as well as a “People’s Choice” honoree, will be announced September 15th. Public votes will be considered by the panel as they make their final selections. “Each year that we do this program, I am amazed by the diversity and importance of the artifacts in the care of Virginia’s museums. Each year, we have success raising awareness for endangered artifacts, and collecting institutions benefit from the Top 10 by garnering support for their conservation efforts. I am confident that this year will be no different,” says Jennifer Thomas, VAM’s executive director. Questions about Virginia’s Top 10 Endangered Artifact program can be directed to Christina Newton at Virginia Association of Museums at (804)358-3173 or cnewton@vamuseums.org.

A good landscape design can make it easier with combinations of small sections of lawn—which need regular mowing, watering, and fertilizing—and generous areas with trees and native groundcovers that pretty much take care of themselves. “It’s a sweet design that can carry off just the right amount of vegetation, versus too much,” declares REALTOR® Sara Greenfield, Principal Broker for Charlottesville Fine Homes and Properties. “In our zone everything can grow and it does. We all have seen overgrown properties that are just not inviting with

eems like there is always one home in a neighborhood that’s just nicer than all the others. It’s cheerful by day and has nice lighting at night. It looks attractive. It looks cared for. It looks loved. While it’s not always easy to define what sets a house like that apart, it’s really a combination of a number of features. First, the landscaping is tidy, perhaps with a gently curving driveway or sidewalk. The bushes and plantings are in proportion to the house and flowers bloom from season to season. Next, the house is inviting and says, “Drop in for a visit,” because of a tidy sidewalk, entryway, and front door. Then, it has up-to-date siding that’s free of dents, stains, or fading. The windows are clean and match the style of the home. The roof has tidy shingles, tiles, or slate without missing or sagging segments. Finally, the house is well kept with no overlooked maintenance, ignored repairs, or clutter like bicycles, odd lawn chairs, or a catawampus basketball backboard. And that big old garbage container from the trash removal company is out of sight.

churches employed red doors to represent the blood of Christ, signaling that when you entered through the doors you were brought to holy ground. In Scotland, many homeowners painted their front door red upon paying off their mortgage. Early American tradition said that red doors on homes welcomed travelers—even strangers in those days of sparse populations—to spend the night.

The House’s Skin By the skin, we mean the outside of the house including the siding, windows, and roof. Are there dents or cracks in the siding? Is it faded? Is there mildew resulting from our rainy summer? It could be time for cosmetic repairs such as replacing damaged clapboards or vinyl strips. If it’s an older home, perhaps it’s time to consider some window replacements with updated technology and appearance. If the roof is damaged, mossy, or mildewed, it’s time for some attention there.

FEATURE

Maintenance Required Remember that people tend not to “see” things they see all the time—the cracked glass in the light fixture on the front porch, the cracks in the sidewalk, the missing brick at the corner by the garage, the rust on the kids’ swing set. All those little one-of-these-days items that need to be fixed definitely detract from a home’s appearance.

Curb Appeal All these factors add up to what is called curb appeal—that is, how nice the outside of a house looks from the street. While it’s always important, when a house is on the market it is critical. Research shows that many potential buyers—who have a wide selection of properties to consider—won’t even get out of the car if they don’t find a house attractive from the outside. These days, with many people shopping for homes on the Internet, potential buyers will cross a house off their list just based on online photos from the street. Clearly, addressing a place’s curb appeal is a key component when it’s time to sell. Here are some tips to maximize a home’s exterior sales appeal!

How Can You Build Great Curb Appeal? “Curb appeal differs from home to home,” points out Greenfield. “A home in the mountains with natural rock outcroppings and many trees may have a different curb appeal than an in-town home with lawns and flowers, plants and shrubs.” She points out that fences are nice, especially with maintained plantings

of annuals and perennials. There are many possibilities with fences, from low stone constructions defining areas of the yard, to split-rail fences to separate driveways, play areas, and gardens, to taller fences to provide privacy for outdoor areas or to conceal trash cans and other outdoor storage. “Flowering trees and fruit trees are always appealing,” Greenfield adds, “but all need maintenance. Some homeowners prefer mulch and trees to grass and mown lawns and there is obvious beauty in both.” If there’s a lawn, it should be fresh and green. If there’s at least a month before the house will be on the market, consult with a nursery about quick-acting fertilizer, reseeding, or replacing bad spots with sod. Be sure it is nicely mowed and edged all the time. “Curb appeal increases the chances of the buyer showing interest in the interior of the home,” she continues, “so I advise my clients to take out invasive plants, prune the shrubs, and trim up trees,” Greenfield continues. “It can be done at affordable pricing and it’s definitely worth the effort.”

Research shows that many potential buyers—who have a wide selection of properties to consider—

won’t even get out of the car if they don’t find a house attractive from the outside.

The House Itself “The best way to achieve curb appeal is to highlight the features your home already possesses,” advises REALTOR ® Janet Matthews, owner of Charlottesville Town and Country. “If you have tired shutters, get out the paint brush. Keep clutter off the front lawn, driveway, porches, and entryways. This includes children’s toys and bikes, garden and lawn tools, and especially trashcans. Neat and tidy is always appealing!” While it’s a superficial thing, a faded, dented, or rusty mailbox slightly askew by the driveway can suggest neglect before a potential buyer even goes through the front door. Touch it up or replace it and be sure the numbers are large enough to read easily from a passing vehicle. Remember, the front door is the house’s face to the world, so perhaps it’s time for a fresh coat of paint—how about red? —or varnish. Polish up the doorknocker, doorbell button, and lockset and be sure house numbers are clearly visible, bright and shiny. If the foundation, siding, porch, sidewalk, or driveway have cracks, get

them professionally repaired. If gutters are dented or rusty, repaint or replace them. If there are stains, consider a good power washing. Speaking of power washing, one can frequently forestall having to repaint the house’s exterior. Bear in mind that “in fashion” paint colors change from

year to year. Often, rather than tackling the whole house, repainting the trim in an up-to-date hue can provide an eye-catching “pop.” Windows should be sparkling clean. Having the blinds raised and curtains open is friendly instead of looking like there might be something to hide. If potential buyers are expected on a gloomy day or in the evening, welcome them by ensuring all the windows are brightly lit, porch light fixtures are dust and spider-web free, and the bulbs are working. Finally, have cheerful flowers near the front, along the walk or in attractive containers. A new WELCOME mat and a seasonal wreath on the door also are inviting. Whether you’re presenting a lovely home that everyone in the neighborhood will enjoy seeing, or encouraging potential buyers to come through the front door in a positive state of mind to discover what’s inside, your house can be the envy of the n neighborhood.

lmost every day you hear discouraging stories of the ever-higher costs of higher education, but it is usually a wise investment. The U.S. Census Bureau says males with a college degree earn 80 percent more than male high school grads and female college graduates earn more than twice as much as women with only a high school degree. Start early with a clearly spelledout goal. Studies prove people with very specific goals consistently outperform those who are simply trying to “do their best.” Goals should be 1) specific, 2) measurable, and 3) have a definite time frame. Some goals may be short term, others—like the recent voyage of New Horizons past Pluto—may extend for years. For example, your goal might be to have $30,000 in college savings by 2020.

Tax-advantaged College Savings

CAAR REAL ESTATE WEEKLY WWW.CAAR.COM

In some cases, employers will cover some or even all tuition costs. Antonio, a Charlottesville High School grad, attended PVCC while working full time. He received some scholarship aid and his employer helped with tuition aid and flexible hours. Last year he was admitted to the second year of a prestigious three-year program at VCU.

One way to save is through 529 plans that grow tax-deferred and are tax-free when used for qualified post-secondary education. Parents, grandparents and others may contribute to a 529 savings plan which are administered by states, but often may pay for out-of-state olleges. Virginia, for instance, offers plans including Virginia529 inVEST, CollegeAmerica, CollegeWealth, and Virginia529 prePAID. Each has specific benefits. For details, visit: www.virginia529.com. There are other Federal tax advantages as well. In some cases, these benefits are phased out for higher incomes and have specific requirements for students. For full information visit: www. irs.gov. For example, the American Opportunity Tax Credit, available through 2017, lets parents claim tax credits for all of the first $2,000 and 25 percent of the next $2,000 of a child’s tuition and mandatory fees, up to $2,500 per child annually. It may be used for four years of post-secondary education for a student taking at least half the normal course load. The Lifetime Learning Credit allows taxpayers to claim a tax credit for 20 percent of up to $10,000 of tuition and mandatory fees for themselves, their spouses, and dependents. There are certain restrictions, but no requirement to be studying towards a degree or be enrolled at least halftime, nor is there a limit on how many

years the credit may be taken. In many cases, up to $2500 in student-loan interest is deductible.

Other Ways To Save

It’s important for students to be committed to the college savings project. Have a family meeting to discuss very specifically the amount of money that is realistic to save and what portion the student should earn. One family, for example, requires their children to contribute an increasing percent-

age of earnings and birthday money toward college savings starting when they become teenagers. Dual enrollment is an excellent path for qualified high schoolers to earn credit for college courses from accredited colleges such as PVCC while still in high school. In Virginia, many community college courses are specifically designed to be entirely transferrable to other state schools. In some cases there is no charge for college tuition while in high school.

Sources Of Income And Financial Aid

Explore the likelihood of scholarships or grants and whether there are tactics to maximize these tuition sources. Most grants and scholarships are tax-free, unless the student must provide work or services. Some are based on financial need, some on merit perhaps in a particular field, some are for athletics. Prospective students should complete the online Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FARFSA) even if they don’t know whether they’ll qualify for any grants, loans, or work-study money. Forms should be completed as close to January first as possible, since most college scholarship offices have a finite budget and the earliest applicants are most likely to receive aid. Some aid is limited and once it’s dispersed, it’s gone. The ideal financial aid, of course, comes as grants and scholarships that don’t need to be repaid. Some awards are by organizations to specific students with no requirements to attend a specific college. Others may be given by donors through the scholarship office of a particular school and have very narrow specifications such as a student of Swedish descent who plays the tuba. Research is well worth the time the parents and students spend on it. High school officers may also be good sources of information. For lots more suggestions, cautions, and listings of scholarships, visit: www.fastweb.com. Some students find part-time work during college, however, it’s important to gauge just how much the work detracts from studies. Sara, a nursing student, sold plasma every few weeks for several years, but was able to spend the time studying while the plasma was being processed. Your strategy today directly affects the funds you’ll have ready for tuition and other expenses in the future. For more detailed information, visit websites, talk to families with members in college right now, or consult with your financial advisor. n Marilyn Pribus and her husband live in Albemarle County near Charlottesville. They both worked full-time during the summers and part-time during the college year.
