Habitat for Humanity of Greater Charlottesville is thrilled to welcome home six families this month, just in time for the holidays. This homecoming is made even more exciting by the fact that these families will be the first to move into the Burnet Commons III: The Park neighborhood lining Elliot Avenue in the heart of Charlottesville. The Park is the City’s first major housing initiative in the Strategic Investment Area south of Downtown. A unique private-public partnership, The Park is a collaborative effort among Habitat for Humanity of Greater Charlottesville, Southern Development Homes and the City of Charlottesville. When complete, the new neighborhood will transform a long-time City dumping ground into a pedestrian-oriented, mixed-income neighborhood built around a central park. ulius Caesar chose the day. Charlottesville showed the way. Or we were a close second, at least. It was Caesar who in 46 B.C. decreed that January was the first month of the year – January, after all, being named for Janus, the Roman god with one face facing forward and one face looking back. Charlottesville has improved considerably on Caesar’s own New Year’s Eve, when Roman troops prepared for violent rampage. Following Boston’s lead, beginning in 1982 celebrants at our peaceful, alcohol-free First Night Virginia celebrations have looked back the next day, hangover-free, at an evening’s worth of music, magic, and comedy – and new beginnings. Carroll Trainum came out for the very first FNV (“It was cold!”), began serving as a volunteer in 1984, and has helped out ever since. In 2000 he

invited a woman he’d met at a dinner party to join him. “We call it the ninehour non-date,” Trainum says today. “Barbara and I volunteered for three hours and then spent the rest of the evening together.” At the end of the evening they toasted the New Year with friends, and she told him, “Carroll Trainum, you’re easy to be with.” The next year, the scene repeated itself, but this time, in a moment alone together

world juggling championship competition in Las Vegas. Cavanaugh juggles ping-pong balls with his mouth, laser light glow balls in the dark, and razor sharp knives while riding a six-foot unicycle. He’ll bring his “Action Comedy” to the Paramount at 4:15, 7:30, and 10:00 p.m. 2010 America’s Got Talent finalist Taylor Mathews hit the top 40 of the iTunes album chart with his first recording, Head Over Feeling, back in 2011, and funded his first full-length record with a $26,000 Kickstarter campaign in 2013. He models his live show, entitled The Hotel Party Tour, after his popular Head Over Feeling video. “I have yet to spend New Year’s playing music, and after taking the year off to write for the new record it’s going to be so amazing to share a few tunes I’ve been working on,” Mathews says. “I’m incredibly lucky to be a part of such a

powerful event in Charlottesville and to make a few new friends along the way!” He’ll play the Paramount Theater at 5:45 and 8:30 p.m.

can easily switch roles by shopping for furniture that looks classy rather than industrial. For example, select a desk that can be closed to serve as a buffet while concealing your computer. Choose storage cabinets that can double as side tables. Since few dining rooms have closets, use an armoire or shelving with doors to hide business materials. Another option is to choose a drop-leaf desk and file units on castors so they easily can be moved and stored out of the way behind a screen or formal draperies of some sort. Good lighting is essential in an office, so make provisions for that. And since the office may be seen from other rooms, it’s extra important to corral that mare’s-nest of wires under the desk

Double-Duty Dining Rooms BY MARILYN PRIBUS

ith many homes becoming smaller, and apartments and condos often having limited space, it can make real sense to have a multi-purpose room. Depending on a home’s layout, the dining room is frequently a prime candidate. Often the dining area is fairly open with archways rather than doors. This lends it to being an extension of an adjacent area, often the living room. For example, a wall unit with a space for a TV, can turn the dining area into an entertainment center. Book shelves and comfortable chairs could turn the space into a library or den while still being able to serve as a formal dining room. With a protective covering, a dining room table can become a sewing or craft center. Supplies can be stored in wall units or on a pegboard concealed behind a large piece of artwork or a mirror. One young family in Charlottesville turned their dining room into a parttime playroom easily supervised from both the living room and the kitchen. The dining table was stowed against

one wall providing a “cave” underneath that kids loved. Toys were stashed in a series of attractive wooden storage units (instead of big plastic tubs) topped by cushions which served as seating for one side of the dining table when it was moved into place. Another family created a game room. They installed a small pool table and used two sheets of plywood (which they fastened together with a piano hinge for compact storage) to transform it into a dining table when company was coming.

The Basics Furniture is always the key to a dining room with a split personality. Some furniture pieces can be opened to make substantial dining tables, then folded up again to take up very little room. One Fluvanna couple, for example, found a drop-leaf table that’s seven feet long, but a mere 12 inches wide when the leaves are down. When guests are coming, they raise the leaves and can seat 12 at that table. Another style is a table that opens out from a chest that stores the supports and leaves. When closed, it mea-

sures about three feet wide by two feet in depth, but when expanded it can comfortably seat 4-12 people depending on how many leaves are deployed. Avoid or replace a chandelier in the exact middle of the room. Not only does such a light fixture shout “Dining Room,” it can be a hazard without a table underneath to prevent people from walking into it.

Studio/Office Since her dining room is conveniently adjacent to her front door, one Charlottesville music teacher uses her dining room as a studio. It includes a small piano, but the fold-up music stands and other musical supplies are easily stowed in the bottom of an attractive corner china cupboard. She has one of those “disappearing” tables that can be expanded for company. If you create home office space in your dining area, be sure your office

One grandmother recalls a family reunion when the dining table was moved to the garage and the entire dining room floor covered with air-mattresses for a flock of granddaughters, but that doesn’t work for most company. It’s more likely that creating an additional bedroom will require some remodeling to add doors for privacy, although depending on the dining room’s relationship to other rooms (and your relationship to your guests) a folding screen could provide sufficient privacy. Creating a guest room does not eliminate the possibility of the room still serving for dining. These days, fold-into-the-wall units still known as Murphy beds come in a remarkable array of styles. Modern wall beds counter-balance the weight of the bed and mattress, making it both easy and safe to lower them for use. Some appear as a flat panel when closed, others as part of a wall storage unit. Designs may include shelving or space for artwork. Others are concealed by bookshelves that slide apart when the bed is to be pulled down. There are even bunk-bed styles which have their sides to the wall and hence take up less space. In the absence of a closet, a clothes tree can be put into service for your guests. You can often find interesting ones in antique shops and a handy person can even build one, perhaps in a style to compliment the decor. So use your imagination to create a double-duty dining room that increases your home’s usability. n Marilyn Pribus and her husband live near Charlottesville.
