JABA’s First Annual Local Resource Fairs What is JABA? You may know that the Jefferson Area Board for Aging provides services and resources for the area’s older population, but did you know that it supports caregivers of all ages, operates two preschools, owns and manages four senior housing communities, and operates an assisted-living community? Did you know it provides valuable services like insurance counseling, home delivered meals, hospital-to-home care, and more? To help the public understand all that JABA does, they’re bringing all the same, great resources from their home office to convenient locations near you, holding five more Local Resource Fairs (one was already held in Albemarle on April 20) between April 28 and May 25 at various Community Senior Centers. JABA’s family of experts will be available on site to answer questions and/ or address concerns related to eldercare and seniors including…caregiver support, adult care options, volunteer opportunities, options counseling, insurance counseling, and more! Kluge-Ruhe Collection Exhibits Paintings By 105-Year-Old Woman On May 13, 2016 the Kluge-Ruhe Aboriginal Art Collection of UVA will open its newest exhibition titled Yimardoowarra: Artist of the River, a career survey of the Aboriginal Australian elder Loongkoonan. At 105 years of age, Loongkoonan is possibly Australia’s oldest living contemporary artist. Her work has been exhibited throughout Australia, including the recent Adelaide Biennial, but this exhibition, which was first on view at the Embassy of Australia in Washington D.C., represents her first major international exhibition. The paintings by Loongkoonan are intricate depictions of her homeland in remote Western Australia. Loongkoonan is an important matriarch of the Nyikina people and one of the last speakers of their critically endangered language. Her paintings are important chronicles of the unique Aboriginal Australian understanding of place. Yimardoowarra: Artist of the River charts the extraordinarily dense latelife career of an Indigenous woman who has brought a century of memory, tradition, and spirituality to her art practice.
Henry F. Skerritt, a doctoral candidate in the History of Art and Architecture at the University of Pittsburgh, has written extensively on Aboriginal art and culture, and has curated or consulted on numerous exhibitions in the U.S. and Australia. He will talk about the exhibition at the opening reception, which will take place on Friday, May 13 from 5:30 – 7:30 pm. He will also give a tour on Saturday, May 14 at 10:30 am. The exhibition will be on view through August 21, 2016 at the Kluge-Ruhe Collection. Please contact Lauren Maupin at ldm3d@virginia.edu with inquiries. Photograph by Diane Mossenson
UVA Jazz Ensemble at Old Cabell Hall The UVA Jazz Ensemble, directed by trumpeter/composer John D’earth, will present their annual Spring Concert on Sunday afternoon, April 24th, at 3:30 p.m. in Old Cabell Hall. Having designated 2016 as the “Year of the Jazz Composer,” they will present the second in a series of three concerts that feature new and classic compositions for big band and large jazz ensembles. The matinee concert will feature excerpts from a new opera by D’earth, entitled Sacred Profanity, along with works by local Chapman Stick master Greg Howard, and a presentation of compositions by vocalist Dawn Thompson. Singers and a chorus from D’earth’s opera, will provide a new sonic dimension to the traditional big band sound. This spring’s UVA Jazz Ensemble concert marks the middle of an exciting year for the band as it offers itself to the wider community of composers fostered at UVA. Watch, and listen to, where this idea goes. Tickets are $10 for the general public, $9 for UVA faculty and staff, $5 for students and free for UVA students who reserve in advance. Tickets can be purchased at the Arts Box Office by
calling 434.924.3376 or visiting www. artsboxoffice.virginia.edu. Old Cabell Hall is located on the south end of UVA’s historic lawn, directly opposite the Rotunda. Parking is available in the central grounds parking garage on Emmet Street, in the C1 parking lot off McCormick Rd, and in the parking lots at the UVA Corner. Handicap parking is available in the small parking lot adjacent to Bryan Hall.
Jeffersonland Chorus Welcomes Guests at Annual Social Night Are you a man who likes to sing? Do you know one? In addition to having supportive voices all around you, you’ll be coached by a director who prides himself in developing ability and confidence among amateurs just like you. Sound good? So will you, when you join the group from 7:30 – 9:00 p.m. on Monday, April 25th, in the practice space they enjoy through the generosity of the University Baptist Church on West Main Street, right on the corner. The Jeffersonland Chorus is a non-profit organization that for over 40 years has been performing for audiences around Central Virginia, including pro-bono appearances at nursing homes. The With Good Reason radio program and podcast, produced by Virginia Foundation for the Humanities (VFH), announces upcoming episodes featuring Pulitzer Prize winners, as part of a special series celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Prizes. Throughout 2016, With Good Reason will air eight half-hour episodes featuring individual Pulitzer Prize winners in conversation with host Sarah McConnell. The inaugural episode in the Pulitzer100 series aired March 12-18 and featured Rick Atkinson, who has won three Pulitzer Prizes for works he has written or contributed to over his long career as a journalist and historian. It is available for streaming and download online. Upcoming episodes include: Pulitzer100: Stories in Science — Airing April 16 – 22 (Earth Day feature) Toms River, NJ, was just like any other town in America—except that children were dying at a very high rate. For Earth Day, With Good Reason speaks with Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Dan Fagin, whose 2013 book Toms River: A Story of Science and Salvation tells the story of how that New Jersey town fought against the pollution—and polluters—killing their children. Firefly Hosts Cancer Fundraiser Dinner FIREFLY restaurant will host a spaghetti dinner as a fundraiser for the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults on Monday, May 9th. Normally closed to the public on Mondays, FIREFLY will open from 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. for this event. Spaghetti, salad, dessert, and soft drinks will be available in casual buffet style. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for kids under 12, payable at the door. For every meal served that night, FIREFLY will donate an extra $1 to the fundrais-

In addition, wine/beer will be available for purchase and $1 from every sale will go to the cause. “This event was sparked by one of our inspirational servers here at FIREFLY, Schuyler Hughes,” said FIREFLY owner Melissa Meeece. Hughes is running across America to raise funds for the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults. The money raised goes to help young adults affected by cancer through scholarships as well as with treatments and housing. During the run across the country, Schuyler will also be stopping at hospitals throughout the journey for service days and to award scholarships. “As part of this event we are also proud to announce the start of the Mark Weber memorial fund, a cancer research fundraising campaign in honor of FIREFLY’s founder and my partner who passed from an advanced germ cell tumor in January 2015,” said Meece. “FIREFLY is proud to support these causes in honor of Mark.” FIREFLY’s arcade games, pool, pingpong, foosball and board games are available for play during the spaghetti dinner, and there will be door prizes and raffles, too. Pulitzer100: Shifting the Spotlight — Airing May 14 – 20 The word obscenity comes from the Greek concept of “off-stage.” Violence, sexuality, abuse—these are things that we consider private, things that should happen off-stage. Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Paula Vogel brings these perceived obscenities into the public eye and under the theatre spotlight. Throughout her accomplished career, Vogel has tackled traditionally taboo subjects including homosexuality, race, incest, and abuse. She received the 1998 Pulitzer Prize for Drama for her play How I Learned to Drive. Vogel has also distinguished herself as an exceptional teacher of young playwrights; three of her students have gone on to win Pulitzer Prizes. Additional confirmed guests in the Pulitzer100 series include Caroline Shaw, who became the youngest recipient of the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 2013 for her composition Partita for 8 Voices, and Natasha Trethewey, who won the 2007 Pulitzer Prize in Poetry for her 2006 collection Native Guard. These and other subsequent episodes in the series will air in June, September, October, November and December; details will be announced online. With Good Reason airs on 65 radio stations in 32 states across the country. A $125,000 Pulitzer Prize Centennial Campfires Initiative grant received by VFH funds the Pulitzer100 series, as well as a two-part program that occurred during the 2016 Virginia Festival of the Book, a special Centennial-edition trio of poetry broadsides produced at the Virginia Arts of the Book Center (VABC), and a to-be-announced special live event in Washington, D.C., by BackStory with the American History Guys on the history and impact of the Prizes. Louisa County: Vibrant, Dynamic and Ideally Located
CAAR REAL ESTATE WEEKLY WWW.CAAR.COM
BY CELESTE M. SMUCKER, PHD
WELCOME TO LOUISA COUNTY, a self-described “vibrant, dynamic and forward looking community” just across the Albemarle County border. Its central location between Charlottesville on the west and Richmond on the east makes it an ideal choice for two career families with jobs in both localities or for those wanting to take advantage of shopping and cultural activities in either of these popular urban areas. Louisa also offers the vital community of Spring Creek, attractive to both families and downsizers who enjoy amenities like the highly rated golf course. For home buyers who prefer a resort lifestyle, a quiet place to retire or a second home, Louisa has a nice selection of options including Lake Anna, Blue Ridge Shores and Shenandoah Crossings, while restaurants, medical facilities and big box stores are all available at Zion Crossroads at the intersection of Interstate 64 and Route 15.
Louisa was once part of Hanover County, but became its own entity in 1742 when there were enough settlers to justify a courthouse. It was named for Princess Louisa, the youngest daughter of King George II of England and Queen Caroline, and enjoys a rich history carefully preserved at Sargeant Museum by the local historical society and located in the town of Louisa. The Society offers year round classes and programs including topics as diverse as Hearth Cooking, Traditional Broom Making and Genealogy. It also sponsors the annual Heritage Day; a function that describes what life was like in Louisa during the years between the Revolutionary and Civil Wars. This year’s Heritage Day is Saturday, April 30th from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., rain or shine. Admission is free. Today’s Louisa residents still enjoy a rural lifestyle, but one that is conveniently close to the urban amenities

we all take for granted. They also have a choice of housing options to suit just about any buyer from first timers to young professionals with growing families, to downsizers who value the universal design features that allow them to enjoy their home and their retirement long term. And for those who like the security of a gated community, Louisa’s Spring Creek offers this as well. On the other hand, those who want acreage for privacy or to enjoy horses, a large garden, or an agribusiness should also consider Louisa, where they will get more for their money than they would in many of the surrounding counties.
CAAR REAL ESTATE WEEKLY WWW.CAAR.COM
Louisa’s Real Estate Market Louisa is centrally located amidst several major markets and multiple listing services (MLS) including both Richmond and Charlottesville. Properties in the northeastern part of the county, especially Lake Anna, may also appear in the MLS that covers northern Virginia, DC and Maryland. It is a predominantly rural county and what Maury Atkins with Roy Wheeler Realty, Co. describes as “truly a crossroads.” Its county seat is the town of Louisa “a quaint and vibrant town center with lots of character,” Atkins said. The spring market is in full swing in Louisa and, according to Atkins, is “truly hectic.” The other agents agree. Jim Dickerson, with Charlottesville Solutions, described the market as “strong,” with buyers out there buying and homes going under contract. He recently listed two horse properties and both went under contract very quickly. Lots and homes are also selling, he explained, adding that many people have plans to build now, fueling
the new construction market that is also having a good year. “This year is really phenomenal,” he said. Sharon Duke, with William A. Cooke, LLC, is very happy with her recent land sales, describing this sector of the market as doing “amazingly well.” She added that often “buyers are purchasing lots even when they are not planning to build right away.” Resale homes are also selling, Duke said, adding “as soon as a house goes
on the market it goes under contract.” She believes there is a backlog of people who want to buy a home and can qualify for a mortgage. Lenders are still strict, she explained, but they are approving loans. With all of its lakes and vacation areas, Louisa has always attracted people looking for second homes where they can enjoy a more leisurely pace away from big cities. The second home market has “picked up a lot,” Duke said,
giving recent resale activity at Lake Anna as an example. Lots are also moving at Lake Anna and many buyers are building custom homes, she added. For the buyers who like the idea of a smaller, quieter vacation or second home, Louisa’s Blue Ridge Shores is a good option. “There are lots of second homes there,” Duke said and it’s not uncommon for people to buy and remodel them. The community offers a smaller lake without all the boat traffic found at Lake Anna. Another popular spot in Louisa is Spring Creek, a gated golf course community at Zion Crossroads. “Our resale market has definitely picked up over the past 12 months,” said Dan Girouard, Sales and Marketing Director for the community. He added that homes are experiencing fewer days on the market and the inventory is shrinking. Of the 20 or so homes currently on the market, most are between four and ten years old and very well maintained. They are “a great value for someone looking to move right in,” Girouard said. Girouard described the new construction market at Spring Creek as “vibrant.” Featured builders Stanley Martin Homes, Ryan Homes and Colony Builders are all busy, helped along by the limited supply of resale options. “We built over 40 new homes last year,” Girouard said, “and hope to exceed 50 this year.”
Buyers Love Louisa Louisa combines a relaxed rural lifestyle where residents can enjoy nature and see the stars at night, while still having easy access to town. Charlene Easter, with Spring Creek Realty, quoted one of her recent buyers as saying: “We love the location with access to

both Short Pump and Charlottesville.” Another Spring Creek buyer had this to say about their new Louisa lifestyle. “We love how friendly the community is...if you want to get involved there are ample avenues available. But quiet time is always nearby, especially to enjoy the wide variety of birds.” And another one: “I spend a lot of time walking through the neighborhood, and I love its natural beauty, the hills and old trees.” She added that she also appreciates “the community’s proximity to Charlottesville.” Atkins is native to Louisa and emphasized the importance of its central location. Not only are Richmond, Charlottesville and Fredericksburg within easy driving distance from different parts of the county, northern Virginia and DC are accessible via Highway 15 or Interstate 95. For people with the flexibility of working at home at least part of the time, and for those who appreciate the benefits of relaxing in the country after a long day at work, Louisa’s location is especially appealing. Of course, two career couples that work in different cities can live in the Zion Crossroads area and commute to jobs at State Farm or Martha Jefferson in just 15 minutes, while Short Pump is just a 40-minute drive away. There is yet another advantage for people commuting from Louisa to Charlottesville. Whether you are driving to town in the morning or coming home after five, the sun is always behind you and never in your eyes, Duke said. Zion Crossroads shoppers can now find much of what they need locally saving a trip to town. And when they shop at the local Lowes and WalMart, they may bump into friends who live in Pantops and other east end Charlottesville locations who want to avoid the traffic on 29 North. On the other hand, very soon, the new Wegmans and other stores at 5th Street Station will be open for business and offer other attractive shopping alternatives for Louisa residents.
Louisa homebuyers also like the lower property taxes and home prices compared to some of the neighboring counties. A recent buyer at Spring Creek explained that after looking in several locations, they picked Louisa rather than Western Albemarle in part because, “it was a better value for our dollar.”
Louisa Attracts a Broad Spectrum of Buyers Louisa has something to offer for just about everyone, from first timers to retirees. “A lot of the activity is from first time buyers,” Duke said. She believes there is a higher level of consumer con-
fidence than there was previously and the first timers she’s working with are now feeling more comfortable with the longevity of their jobs. Duke’s clients also include move up buyers who are now able to sell their current homes so they can purchase another one. Some of these are families moving to larger homes, while others are moving in order to have more land. They often choose Louisa because it is more affordable than Albemarle. Still others are downsizers who want a nice place for their grandkids to visit. A good example is a couple that recently built a home in Spring Creek. They moved to Louisa from Indianapolis after learning that their son and daugh-
ter-in-law, who live in this area, were expecting their first child. Now that they are settled they are entertaining lots of friends who visit them in part because of the beautiful part of the country where they now live. Many buyers choose Louisa because they love to play golf, Dickerson said. Spring Creek has a top rated semi-private course, which regularly receives awards for its high quality. In 2015, Golf Digest ranked it number 55 out of 100 on their list of America’s Greatest Public Courses. Other popular courses include one at Lake Anna and another called The Greens at Tanyard, a semi-private facility near the town of Louisa that welcomes public play seven days a week. Louisa is also popular among families with children who appreciate the local schools, two of which were recently rebuilt. Atkins described the new high school as “superb.” Some of these families buy in Spring Creek where, Girouard said, about 40 percent of buyers are young professionals with children. Many are new in their careers and want a neighborhood, which is family-oriented with amenities like the playground, tennis and basketball courts and walking trails, and which is also a “safe community to raise children,” he added. More and more Louisa also attracts rural entrepreneurs which “is incredible for anyone who wants an agribusiness,” Duke said. That would include people who raise animals as well as businesses like Southern Exposure Seed Exchange, a million dollar enterprise that specializes in heirloom seeds. If you like the idea of life in the country, you’ll love Louisa’s attractive home prices and lower taxes that let you qualify for more house and land than on the other side of the county line. And thanks to Louisa’s central location, the amenities you need will still n be just a short drive away. Celeste Smucker is a writer, blogger and author who lives near Charlottesville.

How To Shop If you are searching for a specific piece, always have the maximum dimensions with you. And it’s always smart to carry enough cash to seal the deal. While some places will accept credit cards, most individuals can’t and might not accept a check either. Remember you are competing with other shoppers and often dealers as well. Be prepared to dicker. Some places are firm priced, but others, especially if you buy more than one item, will negotiate.

hen Charlottesville resident Val Semer and her husband bought a getaway condo and were faced with furnishing it top to bottom, it was a no-brainer to choose formerly owned furnishings. “Secondhand furniture has got character,” Semer declares. “It’s better made and more substantial. Besides, it’s great on the budget and I like supporting local businesses.” The local business she happened to support is Buffalo Gals in Belmont where Semer bought a buffet, dresser, slant-front desk, hall tree, and several other pieces. “You can see some of their things on their Facebook page,” she adds.
CAAR REAL ESTATE WEEKLY WWW.CAAR.COM
Why Choose Used? Sustainability Employing secondhand furniture is true recycling because it doesn’t use new materials or energy to be produced. Since it’s usually found locally, there’s no fuel used in shipping which also reduces pollution. Real materials Older furniture is usually made of solid wood rather than particleboard, plywood, or plastic. Surprisingly, you can find high quality used furniture for about the same dollars you’d fork over for inexpensive mass-produced items. Used furniture comes assembled, too,
so you don’t have to puzzle over poorly translated assembly instructions. Personality As Semer says, older furniture has character. It may be solidly functional, elegantly antique, or quirky-funky. When you buy from an individual, you may also learn the piece’s history. It can be a sweet moment to promise a seller you’ll care for their special piece. Saving money Except for true antiques, secondhand furniture is almost always less expensive than an equivalent new piece. Sometimes people want to sell things quickly or don’t have the ability to transport them to a store so you can find substantial bargains.
Where To Shop Watch for garage sales, yard sales, and fund-raisers by local school and organizations. One couple kept an eye on Craig’s List and in a year’s time scored two handsome rugs, an old music cabinet from France, an ornate German hutch, and several occasional tables, all from different sellers. “The hutch and the cabinet weren’t cheap,” he says, “but comparable new pieces— even if you could find anything half as cool—would have been 4-5 times as much. And we now know the music cabinet’s life history from when the seller’s great-grandparents bought it.” There are several warehouse-type “antique marts” in our area offering everything from true antiques to just
plain used furniture. A few minutes exploration on the Internet can develop a route to hunt for just the piece you are seeking. For example, the Facebook page for Buffalo Gals (where Semer got her secondhand furniture), features photos of their inventory as does the website for the Ruckersville Antique Gallery where more than 80 vendors show their wares and estates often consign things for sale. Habitat Stores carry new and previously owned furniture from antiques to modern. A recent visit to the Charlottesville store found dressers, mirrors, doors, cabinetry to be built in, windows, flooring, ceiling fans, chairs, sofas, even a piano. For refurbishing furniture they stock drawer pulls, light fixtures from practical to elegant, tools to work with, paint and more. Check their website for photos of some of their inventory and for weekly specials. Circa, a Charlottesville institution drawing people from some distance, stocks its meandering warehouse with “affordable antiques and quality used furniture.” Their inventory encompasses antiques to verywell-loved old items crying for some TLC, including drop-leaf desks, china cupboards and secretaries to fit in corners, chairs, tables, artwork, and lots more. “We’d like to do photos on our website,” says Circa manager Robin Slaats who is also the daughter of the owner, “but we have such a high
Solid wood pieces are usually pretty safe. Missing knobs or drawer pulls can easily be replaced and peeling veneer can usually be mended, but be wary of bad smells or wood rot. If you will be painting a piece, you don’t have to worry about water marks or burns, but always check that drawers and doors operate well. Upholstered pieces, on the other hand, can be a bit iffier. Check for pervasive bad odors and signs of insect damage or infestation.
The Bottom Line “Used furniture is unique, special, and different from everyone else’s,” says Circa’s Slaats. “It’s not factory made in China. I never buy new stuff myself.” Their inventory comes from auctions and individuals who are moving or downsizing. “We buy a lot from just people,” she concludes. “We like finding new homes for their things.” n Marilyn Pribus and her husband live near Charlottesville. They recently replaced the mismatched white knobs on a small chest with antique-reproduction drawer pulls and now have an attractive base for a new TV.
